When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Electric Reverse Lockout

The electric reverse lockout on this trailer brake actuator is automatically activated when you shift your tow vehicle into reverse. The solenoid wires into your trailer connector - which connects to your tow vehicle - so that it can detect when you are in reverse. When your vehicle is in reverse, the solenoid ensures that the hydraulic actuator does not activate your trailer's brakes, thus allowing you to back up your rig. To use the lockout feature, you must have a 5-pole flat, 6-way round, or 7-pole trailer connector.

Video Transcript for Titan Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - T4854020 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to take a look at the Titan hydraulic drum brake actuator with the drop and electric lockout, and a 20,000 pound gross towing weight capacity. Now, this hydraulic actuator will activate your trailer's brakes when your tow vehicle slows or stops. Basically when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs, and the momentum will push your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle, and with the surge brake system, this actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. So when this happens the actuator portion right here will contract, so it just slides inside here, applies force to the master cylinder right down here, and this in turn will supply the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes. This one does use the unique roller design. On the inside it has rollers up here, rollers right down here.

This will reduce resistance during the telescoping to create straight line movement. If you notice on the rollers right outside here, they have grease inaudible 00:00:53 fittings, so it makes lubricating your rollers very easy. This whole actuator is a sturdy, durable steel construction, resists bending in any jack-knife situations. The very rear here, if I spin this around, if you look down under the shield here you'll see this solenoid. It's an electric reverse lock-up. This will let you back up without actuating your trailer brakes.

The reverse lock-out on this trailer brake actuator is automatically activated when you shift your tow vehicle into reverse. These wires here that are coming off the solenoid, they wire into your trailer connector, which connects to your tow vehicle so that it can detect when you go into reverse. When your vehicle's in reverse, the solenoid ensures that the hydraulic actuator does not activate your trailer brakes, thus allowing you to back up your vehicle. I do need to remember to use this lock-out. These wires need to be connected to either a five-way flat, six-way round or seven-way trailer connector. If you notice the shield they have over the solenoid, that protects it from the elements and also from any damage to it.

On the very front here, where the coupler is, you can see it has a built-in drop. This will help you match your tow vehicle height. It uses a trigger latch to allow for safe, easy coupling and uncoupling. It has a nice circle grip here, makes the latch simple to use. You just pull back on it.

That opens the ball socket. Once you get on the ball, you let it go and it will lock it into place. This whole part is corrosion resistant zinc plated finish. The very top here where the chain is, that's the break-away kit. It's all included. This is a bolt-on installation. You can see the mounting bracket at the bottom here. Again, the application for this is trailers with hydraulic drum brakes. Gross towing weight capacity is 20,000 pounds. Maximum tongue weight is 2,000 pounds. The ball size that this coupler will attach to is 2 5/16 diameter, and the mounting, this bracket will mount to a straight 4 inch wide trailer tongue. That should do it for the review on the Titan hydraulic drum brake actuator with a drop and electric lock-out and a 20,000 pound gross towing weight capacity.

Ask the Experts about this Titan Brake Actuator

  • Hydraulic Drum Brake Actuator With Electric Lockout
There are only a few hydraulic drum brake actuators that come with electric lockouts, and the right one will depend on the size of the channel you are bolting it to. The Titan Hydraulic Brake Actuator w/ Drop and Electric Lockout # T4854020 is large, fitting on a 4" wide channel and coupling to a 2-5/16" hitch ball. Based on your trailer's GVWR of just under 6,000 lbs you likely have a 3" wide channel (though you will need to verify this). So what I recommend instead is the Titan Brake...

You can view drum brake surge couplers for 2-5/16-inch balls by clicking on the linked page. Simply click on the filters to select the features you want, such as weight rating, bolt-on versus weld-on installation, and a-frame or straight tongue trailer design. For example, for a 20K-rated coupler with electric lockout for a 4-inch wide straight tongue you can use # T4854020 from Titan.

  • Wiring New Trailer Connector with Reverse Light Signal to 2015 Trailstar Tandem Axle Trailer
The easiest way to add a reverse light circuit to your TrailStar trailer is to tap into the reverse light circuit on your 5-pole, IF that is the assigned function. Often boat trailers with surge couplers have an electric reverse lockout feature that allows you to back up the trailer without having to first get out of the truck to manually engage a lockout (which prevents the brakes from actuating as you back up against the coupler). If your trailer coupler has an electric lockout feature...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Surge Brakes That Activate in Reverse with New Truck
A surge coupler/actuator will activate the brakes on the trailer unless it has a lockout feature, either a manual lockout as with coupler # T4500600 or an electric lockout as on part # T4854020. Since the same trailer backs up without any problem using your other truck, the 2012 F-150, most likely that truck has a reverse light circuit present on the trailer wiring to deliver a lockout signal for the coupler's solenoid. If your new truck has only a 4-pole wiring setup then you'll just...
