When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Video Transcript for Titan Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - T4339720 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're talking a look at the Titan zinc plated brake actuator. This hydraulic actuator synchronizes your trailer brakes with your towed vehicle brakes. It easily adjusts to fit different hitch ball sizes so you can turn the hand wheel right here to tighten the coupler around your ball so it'll fit a one and seven eighth inch ball, a two inch ball, and 50 millimeter hitch balls. The cable that has the hook on it. This is the break away kit. So basically what happens is you would attach this to a connection point on the tow vehicle. In any event where the trailer and tow vehicle disconnect, if that we're to ever happen, the vehicle would pull on this cable.

It would pull on this latch right here, and then that would activate the trailers brakes, bringing it to a safe eventual stop. We're looking at a durable steel construction. And then we have a nice zinc plated finish on the whole unit, which is designed to resist rust and corrosion. And it is a bolt on installation, so you got two bolt holes right here, separated apart by three inches on center. Same thing right here. And this is designed for three inch wide channel tongues. So bolt on installation to three inch wide channel tongues. It also features the electric reverse lock out which lets you back up easily.

Again, it is designed for hydraulic drum brakes. Some adjustment may be required to fit those different size hitch balls that I talked about, and again you can do all of that with a simple turn of the hand wheel right here. Then when it comes to the capacity located right here on top, it has the capacities engraved in it, and it says 7,000 pound max capacity, and 700 pound maximum tongue weight capacity. This cap on top in the cap for the brake fluid reservoir, and then on the backside we have the shield or guard right here, and that protects the connection point, so it protects the connection point for the hydraulic line, and then you have you're two wire design because this is an electric actuator so hook up that way as well. It's really nice. Easy to install. Easy to use. And again, we are looking at a nice corrosion resistant design with this system. That's gonna do it for today's look at the Titan zinc plated brake actuator..

Bought this hitch as a replacement for my worn out original which had a manual lockout. Decided to replace with an electric lockout for backing up. Hitch was installed and brakes bled within about 3 hrs. Hooking solenoid wiring up to backup light wiring was easy. Very satisfied; great improvement! 474473

Mine shipped with a defective backup solenoid. Took longer than 30 days to get it mounted and tested. Now etrailer wants me to pay return shipping and process the replacement as a warantee claim. Not able to wait that long. So I'll purchase a replacement from another supplier. Bye bye etrailer. It's been nice. But, it's evident I'm unappreciated and you no longer need me. BTW: anyone seeing this, it's a good coupler (i have 3 of them). But make certain you get it installed pronto because these guys are not gonna cut you any slack. 231941

Used this actuator to replace an Atwood 82543. It is not as good as the old 25 year old Atwood actuator. First, holes did not line up perfectly. Need to either grind off a 1/8 to 1/4" off the trailer frame or make the holes larger. Holes are on 3" centers which was fine. Second, removing the actuator from the ball is not very smooth. The design make the boat trailer move forward by 2 inches when removed. Third, not very easy to bleed the brakes. I used a ratchet strap to move the actuator. Fourth, it is longer than the Atwood, now I need two new chains because the old ones are too short. Fifth, have not found a way to lock. I purchased a Blockhead Coupler lock recommended by e-trailer and it will not slide back far enough to lock. 691622

I had an Atwood that fell apart and was difficult to connect. I ordered this one as a replacement. The connection process to the ball is much easier and the unit itself seems very solid; your website and information was great. The problem I ran into was that the connection to the Atwood master cylinder was very different and I had a hard time finding parts to make the brake line fit. Still in the process of trying to make it work. So far I've been unable to get brake fluid through the lines using the manual method. I also like your message on the top of the box " the bottom of this box should not be the end of our relationship" nice touch! Over all your website has been awesome! I guess I'm gong to have to take it in to someone to get the brakes to function. -Russell 148463

I gave it a lower rating due to a disc brake sticker being on the item. I have a drum set up. After I spent considerable time looking for a fitting to hook it up, also had to consult Titan the manufacture on the status of the brake actuator that it had. eTrailer was more than helpful each time I contacted them. Hav'ent got it hooked up as yet. but the design is more efficient than the Atwood I replaced. eTrailer info I've received was right on target and very helpful. 192378

Very satisfied with the product and timely delivery. Only concern was due to the nature of the product, a galvanized steel trailer coupler, it poked out of the cardboard box it was shipped in. Of course the heavy galvanized coupler was not damaged, but other people's packages could have been damaged by my coupler during shipping. Tell the crew down at the shipping department to be sure to wrap up those protruding edges. 566289

I have attached an install video to this page for you to check out that you can use as a guide for installing the Titan Model 60 actuator part # T4339720 that you referenced. The video shows a very similar Demco coupler part # 8605001 but the couplers install in basically the exact same way.

  • Replacement for Atwood Hydraulic Brake Actuator for Drum Brakes AT82543
The actuator you currently have which is not working, the Atwood AT82543, is a surge brake actuator for drum brakes that has a 6,000 lb capacity and uses a manual reverse lockout, so the Titan Zinc-Plated Brake Actuator - Drum - Multi-Fit Ball - Bolt On - with Lockout - 7K # T4339720 would be a great replacement. In regards to a replacement without hydraulic brakes, that would simply be a standard coupler such as the Husky Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler # HT87076, though I definitely...

It sounds like you're looking for replacement drum brakes for your boat trailer that has 14-inch rims and tires in size ST205/75R14 on its 3500-lb axle. We have both electric and hydraulic drums brake kits for 3500-lb axles and since you referenced a surge coupler # T4339720 I will be happy to recommend appropriate hydraulic brakes. For one with a lockout use # T4339720 but it's an electric lockout. It wires into the reverse light circuit on your truck through the trailer connector. The only other option for that 8,000 lb capacity is a channel mount like the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator - Drum - Zinc - 8" Adjustable Channel Down - 8,000 lbs # DM8759131 which will allow you to use a coupler like the Demco Trailer Coupler - Adjustable Channel...
