When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Because this model does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without triggering your trailer's brakes.

Video Transcript for Titan Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - T2477600 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Titan Zinc Plated Bolt-on Drum Brake Actuator designed to fit a 2-5/16 ball and has a 12,500-lb weight capacity. This hydraulic actuator will synchronize your trailer brakes with your tow vehicle brakes. It uses a unique roller 00:00:16 design to reduce resistance during the telescoping to create straight line movement. Also, if you notice on the top roller they do put a grease zerk fitting on the end of the roller for lubrication. This is a durable, sturdy, steel construction, it helps resisting bending in any jackknife situations. It is designed to attach to a standard 2-5/16 diameter hitch ball.

Just release the lever right here, drop it onto the hitch ball, and then close it and it'll lock it right on. The break away kit right here, the lever and the chain is all included. I just want to show you how that would operate. Go ahead and unhook this, has the S-hook on the end, and you can see it gives you a long enough chain, and what the break away kit does is you would hook this S-hook to your tow vehicle, and then if you ever get in a situation where the trailer will come detached from the tow vehicle, it would pull this chain which would activate the lever, and that would apply the brakes to the runaway trailer. This all has a nice zinc plating on it to provide corrosion resistance. If you notice on the bottom here, all the holes, this is a bolt-on installation to your trailer tongue.

The application on this is for hydraulic drum brakes, and again, the ball size it fits is a 2-5/16 diameter. Mounting this on a trailer tongue requires a 3" wide channel tongue for this to fit on. Again, the weight capacity on this is 12,500-lbs, maximum tongue weight is 1,250. If I swing it around to the back here, if you'll notice right here is your connection to where your hydraulic line would go into your master cylinder. On this one it does not include a reverse lockout, so because of that we like to recommend that you equip your trailer with three backing 00:02:00 brakes so that you can drive in reverse without triggering your trailer brakes. That should do it for the review on the Titan Zinc Plated Bolt-on Drum Brake Actuator to fit a 2-5/16 diameter ball and has a 12,500-lb weight capacity..

Do you have a question about this Brake Actuator?

  • Coupler Lock for Titan Brake Actuator With 2-5/16
  • There is a coupler lock for your Titan Brake Actuator # T2477600 with a 2-5/16" ball. The Master Lock # ML389DAT uses a 1-piece housing to fit securely around the coupler, has a powder coat to resist corrosion and comes with a pair of keys. I've added a photo showing how it looks on a Titan coupler and also linked a couple video reviews for you to take a look at.

  • Replacement Parts for EZ Loader Trailer with DICO Model 10 Actuator & Reliable Sure Lube Hubs
  • For your EZ Loader Trailer with DICO model 10 actuator and Reliable Sure Lube Hubs, I absolutely have recommendations for you. The Titan Zinc-Plated Brake Actuator # T2477600 is the Titan model 10 actuator that is nearly identical to the DICO model 10 you are replacing. If you want the electric lockout, you can use # T4748800 and Shield # T4836100183. For your brake assemblies, I recommend the Titan Hydraulic Brake Kit - Free Backing - Galphorite # T4423500-400 and mounting bolts...

  • How to Lock Out a Model 10 Actuator When Going to an Electric Over Hydraulic Setup
  • I spoke to my contact at Titan and he informed me that there really isn't a simple way to lock out the sliding portion of the Model 10 actuators. You would have to either weld the two portions of the actuator together or drill holes through them and bolt the pieces together. If the actuator is bolted to your trailer the best solution would be to go with the coupler part # T4853100 as this has the same bolt pattern and is a standard coupler. The Model 20 and 60 couplers can be easily...

  • Advice on Replacing Old Surge Brake Coupler with Non Surge Straight Box Coupler Shaft
  • Thank you for including images, this was a great help to me understanding what you will need to do to equip your trailer with electric brakes. The best thing for you to do is to immobilize the surge coupler. To do this you can weld the inner part of the surge coupler to the outer sleeve, as seen in the attached photo in blue. You can also drill a 5/8 inch hole through the unit and insert a grade 5 or 8 bolt through it. If you do this you will want to make sure you choose a spot that...

  • Replacement for Atwood Surge Brake Actuator
  • The Atwood MPD 85778 is not actually a model number for their actuator, it is a literature number - basically a manual number so I wouldn't be able to tell you what a direct replacement would be. You will need to match your actuator to either drum or disc brakes, the weight capacity, coupler size and what size tongue it bolts onto. For example, if you had disc brakes, a 3" wide channel tongue, needed a 7,000 lb capacity and had either a 1-7/8", 2" or 50-mm hitch ball a great option...

  • Replacement Brake Actuator For A Gross Trailer Weight Of 10,000 Lbs.
  • Absolutely, the brake actuator we have that most closely matches your gross trailer weight (GTW) of 10,000 lbs, is our Titan Zinc-Plated Brake Actuator part # T2478100. If you do not wish to have a 3" drop for the hitch ball, you will want part # T2477600. The Titan actuator is rated for a gross trailer weight up to 12,500 lbs and will fit over a 3" wide trailer tongue. If you are using disc brakes then you will need the Titan Zinc-Plated Brake Actuator w/ Electric Lockout part # T4750820.

  • Parts Needed To Replace Hydraulic Braking System On Boat Trailer
  • Hydraulic systems are preferred on boat trailers because water and electricity do not mix well. The hydraulic surge brake system is self contained on the trailer and the only connection to the vehicle is the reverse lockout switch that is powered through the trailer connector. This switch keeps the surge coupler from locking the brakes on the trailer when you are backing up. I know that you told me that your boat weighs 6k, however I need your help to identify the axle so we can select...

  • How to Determine if Replacement Coupler Inner Slide part # T1608400317 is Correct for Actuator
  • Easiest way to tell will be to check out the product pictures of the # T2477600 which is a Model 10 actuator like what the part # T1608400317 is designed to fit. Most actuators are about the same dimensions as they are all designed to fit 3 inch channel so by dimension would not give you the best results.

  • Availability of Model 10 Trailer Actuator for Disc Brakes
  • We have a solution, but we don't have a Titan Model 10 actuator currently that is designed for disc brakes. What you could do is swap in the disc brake actuator part # T4747100 to the # T2477600 and you'd have a Model 10 designed for disc brakes.
