When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Electric Reverse Lockout

The electric reverse lockout on this trailer brake actuator is automatically activated when you shift your tow vehicle into reverse. The solenoid wires into your trailer connector - which connects to your tow vehicle - so that it can detect when you are in reverse. When your vehicle is in reverse, the solenoid ensures that the hydraulic actuator does not activate your trailer's brakes, thus allowing you to back up your rig. To use the lockout feature, you must have a 5-pole flat, 6-way round, or 7-pole trailer connector.

Video Transcript for Review of Dexter Axle Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - DX63FR

Jeff: Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a look at this Dexter DX7.5L weld-on disc brake actuator with the electric reverse lockout for a two-inch hitch ball. Has a 7,500-pound weight capacity. Now you'll use this actuator to synchronize your trailer brakes with your tow vehicle brakes. Basically, this hydraulic actuator will activate your trailer brakes when your tow-vehicle slows or stops. What happens is when you apply the brakes in your tow-vehicle, deceleration occurs, and the momentum will push your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle.

So with the surge brake system, this actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The inner portion right here of the actuator will telescope in, applies force to the master cylinder back here, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer brakes. Also on this one, if you notice, has a nice low profile coupler latch to ensure a nice, easy, secure connection. Some of your actuators will have a large latch that sticks up like that, it could get hit or a damage event. This one's a nice low profile design. It is also an over center latch mechanism that'll only engage when the actuator is fully seated on your two inch hitch ball.

And I want to demonstrate that, I happen to pull. Here's an example of a two inch hitch ball that it'll fit on. So to install it, what you'll first do is pull out this tethered safety pin, and that'll let you open the latch. The latch, you just go up to this little round Dot here. It's spring loaded, push it all the way open, and the latch will flip open.

Now you're all ready to connect. So once you get over the hitch ball, drops right into place, push your latch down, and now you're connected to the ball. And then again, just for safety, you take your safety pin, slide it all the way through, and once it's all the way through, that'll lock the latch in place. And what that does is if by chance this latch got hit or nudged and it popped open, it won't open all the way. It'll keep it connected to the ball, and you just push it back down. And then when you're ready to disconnect, pull that safety pin out, slide that latch all the way open, and you can disconnect from the ball just like that.

Very simple connection and removal. The other thing you might notice here includes this breakaway cable. Now this breakaway cable is required by law, and you can see it has the hook on the end. This actually will always be connected to your tow vehicle. And what this does is it prevents a trailer runaway situation. In other words, if this happened to detach from your tow vehicle, and this cord's hooked up, it will pull this breakaway cable, and that in turn will activate the master cylinder back here to apply the brakes. So it helps prevent a runaway situation.Another thing I want to show you on this. This does have an electric reverse lockout. If you notice the wires back here right above the master cylinder has a solenoid that let you back up without activating your trailer brakes. It's an electric reverse lockout. It will automatically activate when you shift your tow vehicle into reverse. The solenoid is wired into your trailer connector, which will connect to your tow vehicle, so that it can detect when you're in reverse. So when you put your vehicle in reverse, that solenoid will ensure that the hydraulic actuator does not activate your trailer brakes. Allows you to back up your vehicle. Now to use that feature, you can see the wires on it, you must have a five-way flat, six-way round, or a seven-way trailer connector. The master cylinder right back here, that the solenoid's attached to, notice it is a aluminum construction rather than plastic or steel. Gives you increased strength and corrosion resistance. And up at the top here is a recessed brake filler cap you can see here. It keeps it from getting damaged and it gives you access to the master cylinder to add brake fluid or to check the brake fluid level. This is a nice primed finish. It is a weld on installation. It is designed to fit three inch by three inch or three inch by four inch straight tongue trailers. This part is made in the USA. Application, again is for hydraulic disc brakes. We mentioned it's designed to fit a two inch diameter hitch ball, and it has a weight capacity of 7,500 pounds. But that should do it for the review on the Dexter DX7.5L weld-on disc brake actuator with the electric reverse lockout for a two inch hitch ball. Has a 7,500 pound weight capacity..

I slipped this into my boat mate trailer for 2001 moomba. Took about an hour to hook up and bleed the system with a buddy. Works great! If you can use simple tools and are mechanically savvy this is a no brainer.

I did right a way and still have not heard back. I emailed Noah today asking about the status no reply, now Im on a 9min hold to try and talk with someone about my replacement past. The product is exactly what I ordered and it was shipped quickly. Only problem is it is missing the upper cap to cover the brake fluid reservoir. I did call Customer Service and they said they would send one ASAP. The photo online shows it is included with the product. I’m waiting on receiving it.

This product doesn’t fit over 3” tongue. Its the exact same size as a 3” tongue.Unusable. Had to remove the internal portion and modify my trailer tongue to fit. Arrived as the worst packaged item I’ve ever received. It was barely still in the box. Whom ever packaged this didn’t have a clue what they were doing.

  • Recommended Surge Brake Actuator For Tandem Axle Boat Trailer With Disc Brakes
The Dexter DX7.5L A-60 # DX63FR is would work perfectly for your boat trailer with tandem axles and disc brakes as long as your trailer frame is 3" x 3" or 3" x 4" and you are ok with welding it on. This actuator has a 7500lb weight capacity, so make sure your boat and trailer do not exceed that. Another option is the Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go # 099-175-20 which has the same 7500lb weight capacity and is designed for hydraulic disc brakes, but has a zinc finish for superior corrosion resistance...
