Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

My tire showed up very quick in time for a weekend trip even though I didn't order it until Tuesday. It is exactly as you would expect, properly aired up and ready to go on my trailer. The load range d is worth the extra money if you plan on loading your trailer with more than just 2 snowmobiles. The galvanized rim is also worth the extra money as they never rust like a steel rim so you could just mount a tire without buying another rim. I once bought these tires from a local shop for $100 a piece only to find a hole the very 1st time I used them and the shop wouldn't even patch it unless I paid an additional $20. These tires are well worth the convenience and knowing that they're brand new and will last for years 348385

I always try to support our local businesses, but in this case they snoozed and lost while I won. They did not have the product I needed and could order it so I figured if I was going to order and wait, I may as well check on-line. I got a better product for essentially the same money. It did delay me by several days, but it was well worth the wait. No mounting fees, no valve stem fee, upgrade from a load range "C" to "D" and I did not even have to spend the fuel to go to town and wait for the service center to take care of my tire problem. My comfort factor is now very high with taking the trailer out and about for use. 862309

Ask the Experts about this Kenda Trailer Tires and Wheels

  • What is the Actual Load Capacity of Kenda 215/60-8 Trailer Tire/8-Inch Wheel # AM3H325
Thank you for the photo of your utility trailer. You are correct that if a tire itself and a wheel itself each carry different load ratings the combined wheel-with-tire will have a rating equal to the lower-rated of the two parts. As it happens in the case of the Kenda 215/60-8 Trailer Tire/8-Inch Wheel # AM3H325, both the tire and the wheel share a common maximum load rating of 1165-lbs, so this is the load rating of the combination, part # AM3H325. Please note that any trailer tire...

  • Speed Rating of Special Trailer Tires in Size ST215/60-8
With all of our trailer tires and wheel/tire items the speed rating is J (65-mph) unless we specifically call out a different rating in the specs. Comb # AM3H325 is actually rated up to 81-mph. In this 215/60-8 tire size and 5-on-4-1/2 wheel bolt pattern we offer several wheel/tire options, shown on the linked page.

  • Wheel and Tire Recommendation for Replacing Size 18.5 x 8.5 - 8
The modern tire size equivalent to the size 18.5x8.5-8 is the size 215/60-8 like the # AM3H325 which has the same bolt pattern you have too of 5 on 4-1/2 inch. This is a Load Range D tire as well. I attached a review video for this for you to check out as well.

  • Difference Between Tire Sizes 5.70-8 and 215/60-8
5.40-8 is not a standard trailer tire size but 5.70-8 is and I imagine that's what you mean to type since the 4 and 7 are close on the keyboard. The tire will be right at 3-1/2 inches wider and the overall diameter will be only .2 of an inch larger. You would need a different wheel too though since the two tire sizes won't fit the same rim. For that you would want the # AM3H325 for if you have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern or part # AM3H300 for if you need a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern.

  • Replacement Wheel and Tire 215/60-8 Bias For Snowmobile Trailer
As long as you have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern on your trailer hub the part # AM3H325 would be a great choice for you. This wheel and tire setup has a capacity of 1,165 lbs at 70 psi. The galvanized wheel would be great for preventing corrosion from salty roads. Since this is snowmobile trailer there's a good chance you will be towing through snowy and salty roads. I attached a review video for this wheel and tire for you to check out as well.

  • What is the Backspacing of Trailer Tire and Wheel Combo AM3H325
The overall width of the wheel in tire and wheel combo # AM3H325 is 8 inches. The inner width where the tire sits is actually 7 inches. Since this wheel has a zero offset the backspacing is going to be 4 inches. The tire width is 8-7/8 inches overall making half of that 4.43 inches or 4-7/16. I made a video for you as well explaining these measurements.

  • Speed Rating for a Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire on a Trailer Carrying a Harley Davidson
You will want to stay within the limits of the posted speed limit for sure but if you are using our tires they are rated for 65 miles per hour maximum unless otherwise stated on the tire itself. So, on the highway you can go as fast as you are comfortable traveling up to 65 miles per hour. I have included a link to our trailer tire FAQ article for you to view. • Should Utility Trailer go Down from 205/75-14 Tire Size to 175/80-13 To Share Spare w Boat Trailer
When you switch to a smaller tire size you end up losing quite a bit of weight capacity and you'll also end up lowering the trailer's height. This could cause the trailer to drag if the clearance was currently close. I'd recommend sticking to the current tire sizes each trailer has since that's what the trailer was designed for and seemingly the size is working well for the trailer currently. For just a tire in the size of 205/75-14 we have the Westlake part # 274-000012 which is priced...

  • Does Tire Pressure Affect Trailer Tire Weight Capacity
To get the full capacity of your trailer tires they have to be inflated to the max psi rating that's on the sidewall of the tire. Otherwise the tire capacity is diminished and excess heat can build up. If your tires are rated at 1,165 lbs that means that with two of them you have a total of 2,330 lbs in tire capacity. You have to also figure in the weight of your trailer as well as the ATVs. The speed rating for the tire will be listed on the sidewall as well.

  • Could a Smaller Wheel and Tire be Installed on a Trailer for Storage Height Clearance
A rim like the part # AM3H325 could potentially work for you if you don't have brake assemblies on your axles. This would be just as wide as your current setup but would be almost 9 inches shorter. This rim has the same bolt pattern as your current wheels as well and the weight capacity is 1,165 at 70 psi which is most likely much lower than you current setup so you would need to be aware of that as well.

  • Trailer Tire/Wheel Combo for a Karavan Snowmobile Trailer with 8 Inch Wheels and Hydraulic Brakes
There are currently no brake assemblies that are going to fit an 8 inch wheel because of the exact problem you have encountered: the hubs are too large to fit. The smallest we can go is for 10 inch wheels. You might be able to go to a 205/65-10 tire which would be about 2 inches taller than the 215/60-8 tire and wheel # AM3H325 that you have referenced. You would need at least 1 inch of clearance above the existing tire for the larger size. If you have the space on the trailer for the...

As long as your trailer axles do not have brakes on them the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel # AM3H325 that you referenced will fit on your hubs since it has the same 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. The pilot diameter of this wheel is a bit smaller though at 2.8 inches so you might measure to make sure this diameter would fit over the center portion of your trailer hub.

First, the hub that is on your trailer may not fit inside the smaller wheel center of the 8 inch by 7 inch wheel.
