Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Extremely poor quality coating on wheels. Bubbling clearly visible. I would’ve returned them but it seemed like a huge hassle. 713307

Working fine after a year. Coating has not flaked off yet.

I was very impressed with my experience ordering from etrailer. I needed new tires for my utility trailer, the website had helpful videos and information to ensure that I was purchasing the right product. My order was processed and delivered free of charge and I had my new tires within the week 715157

I ordered this tire wheel combination because its simpler to order combination than just buy tires and not that much more expensive. I also wanted to change to galvanized wheels so combo was the way to go. I also wanted load range D and hopefully a better quality tire than readily available locally , which I hope this turns out be. I have had extensive experience with large and small trailers including jet ski pontoon and ski boat, equiptment trailers, goosenecks, 4 wheeler / lawnmower trailers and john boat fishing boat trailers which this purchase was for. Essentially all the 13 inch and under down to 8 inch trailer tires I have ever had failed from sidewall cracking aging . Hope the rubber in this tire is more like normal car tire formulation. Only time will tell. The tires arrived in 3 days as indicated when ordered and order was correct. The condition of the tires was as expected with no observed defects they were also pre inflated . The one thing that prevented me from giving this a five star was the quality of the galvanization on the wheels. In some areas there was excess small sheets of the galvanized coating hanging off wheel near tire bead edge and between the spokes. This excess pulls off easily but makes me think it will leave a small crease of unprotected metal. Only time will tell. I do believe the wheels will look better 3 years for now than the painted ones I had and am using as spares. The website was fairly easy to use but the choices could have been further filtered to galvanized etc wheel and especially load range and Bias vs Radial tires . It took a while to go through the 25 or so choices then I placed possibles in cart then went to cart to review those and remove all the ones I did not order. Overall very good experience with shopping and ordering and I have ordered from here several times. 607207

There are a few things you can do to maximize the longevity of your tires. 1 Observe the weight rating. Exceeding the weight rating will cause a high heat build-up, which decreases tire life. 2 Observe the tires speed rating, for the same reason as above. 3 Maintain the tire at the full pressure listed on the tire sidewall. If the tire is underinflated, its load bearing capability will be reduced. Trailer tires are meant to be operated fully inflated unlike passenger vehicle tires which can have an acceptable inflation range. 4 Protect the tires from UV rays if the trailer is stored outside. UV rays from sunlight cause the rubber compounds in tires to break down prematurely. Trailer tires should be replaced around the 6 year mark, regardless of tread condition. At 6 years, dry rot will start to be a problem.
-- Mike L - 02/22/2019

Since reviewed a year ago , I have used the boat and trailer quite a bit duck hunting and fishing. The tires and wheels still look brand new . No rust has formed where any of the thin sheets of excess galvanizing were easily removed. I am very pleased as no matter what they have already outperformed painted wheels and the tires have had no issues and rubber appears to be holding up well so far.

Tires and wheels both look good, the galvanized is a nice change from just painted. If you want even better looking, you'll have to get the aluminum wheels. Customer service was excellent. UPS broke the box and lost one tire, etrailer folks worked with me and them and got a replacement wheel/tire out to me. When UPS found the missing tire, they dropped it at my house and I contacted etrailers to buy it as well to use as a spare. I loved that they stayed in email contact with me on an almost daily basis as we tracked down what happened. Only took a week to sort it all out, and two days of that was because I let the initial box sit without opening it up. Tire wheel price combo seemed higher than some, but I got free shipping, which more than made up for the difference and made these guys the best deal. I would definitely buy from them again 172789

Tires were ordered on Good Friday and showed before noon on Tuesday. Great service as expected. The tires are very nice and there was no shipping damage. I think they will work great on my camper for this years long distance tow. Only little complaint is that the rims don't look like a lot of finish work went into them. They are rough, almost look like they were spray painted rather than galvanized. Surface has drips and runs. But otherwise is well covered and I don't anticipate them rusting like my old white painted rims did. They may look better with a bit of hand polish work. But they are trailer tires not mag rims on a GTO so I can live with it. 183877

- AM31994

Bought three of these tires and selected the galvanized option for use on my boat trailer. Another reviewer commented on the quality of the galvanizing. My rims looked as if it was sprayed on vs. dipped as well. However, for my application looks less important than function. The three tires individually balanced with weights ranging from minimal to heavy. one required weights on both sides of the rims. I've had them out for a hundred mile round trip and they performed well. So far very satisfied with ease of ordering, prompt shipping, customer follow up and price. If tires hold up well will upgrade rating. As an aside... very impressed with the wealth of information this site makes available to the consumer. 195301

A year ago I promised to upgrade my rating if he tires held up well. They did and I will. Five Stars! Put about 2000 highway miles and numerous dunks in various lakes. The tirres hardly look used and track true. The galvanizing has done its job as well. No issues with rust. Im satisfied with the tires and rims. will consider again when time.

Great tires and rims, they look great on my pontoon trailer. But i took the pontoon out for the first time with the new tires and we got home from a greay day on the lake and i parked the trailer and when i got out to unhook the trailer i heard a hiss noise from one of the tires and was thinking i just ran over a nail or something and was glad we made it home when this happened.but when i was looking at the tire it was coming from the valve stem. The valve stem had torn right at the base where it sesls at the rim. Just thinking i got a bad valve stem, hope other people don't have the same issue with these stems. 818871

The Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D # AM31994 does not have specific torque specs. The torque values will be based on the lug nuts and wheel size. For your wheel size and material, you will torque between 75 and 85 ft lbs if you have 1/2 inch lugs or between 95 and 115 ft lbs if you have 9/16 inch lug nuts. I've attached a photo to assist.

  • Smaller Trailer and Wheel Size for Trailer with 215/75-14 Tire Size
Best option is the 13 inch wheel and tire size you mentioned of 185/75R13 like the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM31994. The 195 -75r 14 size you mentioned is a passenger vehicle tire size and definitely should not be used on a trailer. The tire and wheel combos we carry like the part # AM31994 are not machined balanced. You can have the tire and wheel combos balanced at a local tire shop if you wanted to. What our tire manufacturers will do is line up the light spot on the tire with the heavy spot on the wheel. This is a type of balancing but not like how car tires are balanced (with weights on a balancing machine).

  • Is it Necessary to Fully Balance Trailer Tires
First, thank you for your many purchases from us here at etrailer, including the Kenda Karrier tires # AM31994. Trailer tires that we sell come from the distributor already mounted to the rims. These do NOT get a full dynamic balance the way new vehicles tires do but they don't actually need this. When the tires are mounted to the rims the light spot on the tire is matched to the heavy spot on the wheel. This provides a degree of balancing that is sufficient for trailer tires. You...

You pay a little more but you still get excellent corrosion resistance, style, and none of the issues associated with galvanized wheels.

I have linked you to our Tire and Wheel help article that contains more...

The best possible upgrade I could recommend for you would be to go with a 14 inch rim and a slightly larger tire, assuming you have the clearance for...
