Video Transcript for Thule Goalpost Hitch Mounted Load Bar Review

Today we'll be reviewing the Thule Goal Post hitch mounted load bar part number TH997. This goal post provides a front or rear mounted load bar that works with a 2 inch hitch receiver and allows you to carry loads longer than your truck bed. It can easily be adjusted to fit different heights and includes 2 load stabs to provide lateral load support. We'll start of our review by assembling and installing it on to the vehicle. We'll first take the goal post stinger and slide it into the receiver tube of our hitch. We'll then line up the pin holes and thread our anti rattle bolt through the pin holes tightening it with a wrench. There is a built in anti wobble mechanism that keeps the goal post snug in the receiver for stability and to reduce noise and vibration.

We'll then insert the upper half of the goal post into the opening of the stinger at the top. We want to make sure that it slides all the way down we can continue working on it at about chest height. We'll then position the load bar onto to the horizontal bracket, we'll then place in our in caps at each end of the load bar. Next lining up the holes in the load bar with the holes in the horizontal bracket. We'll take the Y brackets and M6 carriage bolts and insert our carriage bolts through the holes.

We'll put the Y brackets on both the front and rear side of the goal post putting on our washer and nut and tightening it with the wrench. Once everything is all tighten down and secured, we can attach the two load stops with the shorter carriage bolts and two wing nuts keeping them tight and loosely you can adjust them for your load. This load bar has a telescoping design that allows you to adjust the height to accommodate for different size trucks and SUVs. It will telescope vertically from 54 1/2 inches all the way up to 66 inches. This pin here secures the upright bar in place at the height adjustment points. Next we'll take the included anti sway straps to help prevent the goal post from swinging back and forth while your vehicle is in motion.

Now on the top hole, for the upper part of the goal post we'll insert the silver hook into the hole and then move down to one corner of our vehicle where we will find the sturdy anchor point for the other hook. We'll then bring the strap up tightening it loosely. We'll then repeat these steps for the other strap. Now that both straps have been positioned, we can then move back and forth tightening each strap a little bit a time that the goal post doesn't lean to one side of the vehicle. We'll then secure the excess strap.

The kit comes with one 58 inch Thule load bar and 2 load stops. The load stops can be placed anywhere along the load bar to provide lateral support for all your gear. The Thule goal post is constructed of a high strength steel for all durability and is made in the USA. It has a weight capacity of a 165 pounds. Now that we've gone over some of the assembly and the installation, as well as some of the features and specs, that will complete today's review of the Thule Goal Post hitch mounted load bar part number TH997. .

Thule Goalpost Hitch Mounted Load Bar (TH997) Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbar (RRVA150B) and associated fit kit - Single set Thule - Super easy to setup. The only issue is with the bolted mount on the hitch. Thule should lose the welded threaded nut/bolt and redesign with a receiver lock. This would also greatly improve stability (no play in either axis) and maybe eliminate the need for the blue straps. The entire assembly easily fits in the bed of a pickup truck, which is important in the absence of a receiver lock. This isn't a full size bed. Could also disassemble and fit in the cab or in a car. 563225

The Thule Goalpost works like a charm. Once the boat was placed on the Thule roof rack, it is easy to adjust the height of the GoalPost to level it out for safe traveling. After snugging the tiedowns front and back the boat made a 1300 mile trip without a problem. Thule products work great! 373149

I expect to use the Thule Goalpost again this year to transport a standup paddle board I have built. In particular, the straps attached to the Goalpost keep it rock steady when traveling. There is no wobble back and forth.

I recently switched from a pull-along camper to a short, lifted gooseneck camper and needed a way to carry my faithful old 16-foot aluminum canoe. I had carried the canoe on Thule racks on my 2005 Silverado 2500HD diesel crew-cab from new, but I needed to move the canoe WAY forward to clear the new gooseneck. E-trailer had the answers. First I installed a DrawTite front receiver hitch (4-bolt, 1/2 hour easy install) and then plugged the Thule GoalPost carrier onto the front of my truck. A quick and easy height adjustment was all it took to evenly distribute the canoe between all three racks. Now, the 16-foot canoe is about 6 inches clear of the trailer and the front overhang does not interfere with driving at all. Out on the road and no problem at 65MPH in typical Wyoming winds. I took some pictures and hope they show how a little browsing, thanks to the super-helpful detailed specs and 'how-to' tips and customer reviews on etrailer.com can help you solve problems. 103613

Is there any problem with front visibility and any possible laws for blocking front view? I am looking to do something similar with two kayaks while pulling my fifth wheel?ThanksSteve

Steve, there is no significant interference with visibility nor am I aware of any legal impediments to this set-up. I have been using this system for over a year now with no trouble with drive-ability and no attention from law enforcement. I have two 10-foot kayaks that I carry on the Thule roof racks as an alternate to the canoe, but they dont over-hang to the point of needing the front support that the 16-foot canoe does.

Gruf thanks for replying to Steve's question. Steve, we do recommend checking with your local DOT office or highway patrol to make sure that you are within legal cargo regulations, since they vary depending on where you are traveling.

Have used Thule racks for years to transport kayaks and bicycles. This is another well designed and durable rack system. I will am using this rack in a front hitch on a GMC 3500 pickup, along with a single Thule rack on the truck roof, to carry two kayaks while towing a fifth wheel. 706876

The order arrived relatively quickly, undamaged. I put it together right away to make sure all the parts were there and didn't even need to refer to the directions with the exception of the straps that secure it to the bumper. That didn't help, though, since the rack didn't have the attachment points noted in the instructions. I'm not too worried about that, though, since I should be able to figure something out. The Thule rack wasn't discounted as most of the other racks were on the site, but I have some other Thule attachments from previous racks that I might be able to use, so I went with it and can't wait to load-up my expedition kayak this week for the first time this season. It's installed on a Nissan Titan crew cab with the shorter bed. I have a factory forward rack in the truck bed and I'm hoping that I'm able to skip installation of the cab-top temporary rack. 502405

Purchased this to mount on a front hitch receiver on our truck. We pull a fifth wheel camper and carry our bicycles on a rooftop rack on the truck. We wanted to be able to also carry our kayaks. The Thule GoalPost will support the front of the kayaks while the back rests on the roof rack. The GoalPost was well made, easy to assemble, and appears to be up to the task. This is the first Thule product I have owned; always used Yakima, but didn't like the y-shape of the Yakima. I thought it would block too much when on the front of the truck. My package was missing a few items. etrailer responded promptly and said they would send them right out. 454695

We have down-sized our family car... from a full-sized V8 SUV to a Subaru Forester. However, I still need to do home repairs using my smaller new car. First situation: How do I carry 4'x8' sheets of plywood and/or 12' lumber with the Subaru roof rack? Its cross bars are only 3' apart front to rear. Answer: The Thule Goalpost. My roof rack combined with the Goalpost now has a 7' span front to rear. And, the Goalpost crossbar is over 4' wide. Easy to assembly, install and use, the Goalpost is heavily-built and the paint had no imperfections. The height of the Goalpost is adjustable and has a setting that matches my roof rack height. I do not know how they did that! This is a good product. 207097

  • Comparing the Thule Goalpost and the Erickson Big Bed Load Extender
The Thule Goalpost Hitch Mounted Load Bar part # TH997 weighs around 30 lbs and the Erickson Big Bed Load Extender for Truck Bed or Roof part # EM07600-07601 weighs around 57 lbs. As you mentioned, the Erickson load extender is less cost effective but also has a high weight capacity and is more easily stored. They both have a height adjustment from 54 - 66" so you can use them on either your 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander or your 2003 Chrysler Voyager. I have attached a review video of each...
