Note: Roadmaster direct-connect base plates will only work with Roadmaster tow bars that slide into a trailer hitch, such as the Sterling, Blackhawk, Blackhawk 2, Falcon, or Falcon 2. These base plates will not work with tow bars that require a hitch ball.

The drawbars, or front arms, on this base plate kit are supremely easy to mount and remove. Just insert them into the brackets and twist to lock them in place. To remove each arm, simply tug the built-in pull pin to disengage the lock, twist the arm back and pull it out of the bracket. Once the drawbars have been removed, the remaining brackets are virtually invisible. On most automobiles, the brackets are mounted within the grille, where they remain not only unseen, but protected from scrapes and scuffs as well.

Video Transcript for Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plate Kit Installation - 2017 Chevrolet Colorado

Today we're going to be taking a look at how to flat tow your 2017 Chevrolet Colorado. We'll start with our base plate, which will be using Roadmaster's EZ5 base plate kit. In addition, we'll be using Roadmaster's diode wiring kit. SMI's Stay-IN-Play DUO supplemental braking system, Roadmaster's battery charge line kit, Roadmaster's automatic battery disconnect switch, Roadmaster's Falcon All-Terrain non-binding tow bars, and lastly, Roadmaster's 64" single-hook safety cables. So you're looking to flat tow your Chevrolet Colorado Well we've got our whole setup here, and there's several components we're going to need to complete that. Let's go over those now. The first component you're going to need is your base plate.

This is the interface that's going to allow your vehicle to be connected to your motor home and pulled behind it. This base plate is easy to install. You do have to remove the fascia, but there is no drilling required. It replaces your factory tow hooks and is squeezed between the bumper beam. It's going to provide you an attachment point for your safety chains, as well as a place to hook up any Roadmaster tow bar.

You can hook up other brands using adapters found here on our website. When not in use, the connection point for your tow bar is removable. Simply pull the pin, push it and pull it out, and this will give you a more factory appearance. The next component is our diode wiring. This wiring kit allows you to transfer signals from your motor home through the included cable, down to our connector, and to the lights at the back of our vehicle. Our diode wiring is going to connect into both our passenger and drive side taillight assemblies, intercepting the turn and taillight signals.

As you can see here, we have our right turn signal, left turn signal, tail lamps, and brake lamps. The next component is our SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO. That's an electric supplemental braking system. It uses signals from the motor home as well as an inertia sensor to proportionately apply the brake pedal to assist with stopping. The operating unit located under the hood taps into the brake vacuum system and uses air pressure to apply the brake pedal. Our braking system also includes a breakaway switch. This safety device has a cable attached to it, so in the event of a catastrophic disconnect, the pin will get pulled, applying our braking system to help our vehicle come to a safe stop.

When the braking system pulls the pedal, it'll illuminate the LED on the backside of our mirror. This way, we know the system's working properly. While this system is designed for a motor home that has hydraulic brakes, if you have air brakes on your motor home, you can get SMI's Air Force One. It installs fairly similarly but is designed to work with air brakes on your motor home. For our Colorado, we'll also need a battery disconnect. This allows us to disconnect our battery from the vehicle at the touch of a button. Since our vehicle requires the battery to be disconnected when placed into tow mode, this way we can do it quickly and easily. Our wiring just connects to the battery and then to a switch that you'll mount inside your Colorado. Now when we press our button, it'll disconnect our battery. If you press it again, it'll reconnect our battery. We've also installed the battery charge line kit. This will allow our motor home to charge our battery as we're going down the road. Now everyone our battery is disconnected, it is powering our braking system and a few other components. This way, we can ensure when we get to our destination, our battery's going to be charged up and ready for us to start our adventure. We'll attach it to the center post on our six-pole connector, and that way we'll receive our charge from our motor home through this circuit. You've now got all the necessary components installed on your Colorado but you need a way to connect that to the back of your motor home. We're going to be using Falcon's All-Terrain tow bars to do this. As the Falcon All-Terrain is a Roadmaster product, it easily connects to our base plate that we have installed. The quick-connect arms on our base plate will easily attach to our Falcon's arms. We slide those down in the slot there. We take the large pin, slide it through both arms, lining up the hole on the opposite side, and put the locking pin down in it, making sure to fold it over so it can't become disconnected. Our tow bars are non-binding. This is great because, if you're parked on uneven terrain, it can be difficult to disconnect it from your base plate. You would simply pull the lever, and that'll allow the arms to free up, slide in and out, making it easy to get them disconnected. The only thing left is to route your safety cables. The nice thing about the All-Terrain is that it has a channel on each arm to route your wiring and cables through. We simply slid those through, made our connections at our base plate and on our motor home side, making sure to cross your safety chain cables. Hook up your wiring, which we've also ran through the other arm, so we have our seven-pole on our motor home side and our six-pole on our vehicle side, and then hook up our breakaway switch for our braking system.Depending on your RV, you may need a high-low adapter. You want to be towing as level as possible. Since our RV is so much higher than our vehicle where the base plate is, we are going to be using a 6" drop here to level that out. Now we can take a look at our Colorado as it's flat towed behind our motor home. That completes our look at a complete flat tow setup for a Chevrolet Colorado.

I chose the Roadmaster EZ5 base plate for my 2018 Colorado because its connection height would work better with my motorhome's hitch height. Installation was fairly straightforward but I found the supplied instructions lacking in a few areas. Although it took me far longer than the advertised 3 hours ... I believe the installation went well and should work well. This is my 5th baseplate install and this one went smoothly and the quality of the equipment seems fine. 666098

The roadmaster rm-523193-5 arrived as promised. The box the base plate came is was damage, and a good 5 inch whole was exposed. Good news, was that upon opening the box nothing was damage. The base plate installed as intended, and etrailer videos was so helpful. Very happy with the way it looks on my 2018 Equinox . 718710

Product arrived very fast. Packaged well. I installed it as per instructions . Watching a video was a great h Ed lp after reading the instructions. Everything installed as expected. Took about 3 hours. I did drop a nut a nd could not find it so had my buddy run to hardware store to buy a 1/2 " nut and lock washer. I did not have access To a lift, So running the car up on blocks 4"high helped access The underside of the cowling. It was a challenge to get my fat finger holding a nut and washer into 2 tight spots but that is what I expect doing this type of installation. 572466

The order to delivery time was excellent! 2 days to get to central PA. I just finished installing the RM base plate to my 2018 Jeep Wrangler Sport. We plan on towing the Jeep behind my motor home. The installation went smoothly and the Jeep looks great. You can barely tell that it is rigged to be towed. 560301

Although I haven't installed this item as yet, I want to comment on the service I received from the staff at etrailer. They were without a doubt, the most knowledgeable people I have ever dealt with, not only did they know this product, but they were well versed in its application, and how 2 different parts compared & what was unique to each one. They helped me make my decision, the part was ordered and shipped out the same day. That's the way to get customers coming back. And then on top of that the shipping was free. Wow ! Thank you etrailer, i'll be calling you again. 539793

With the included instructions, installation was easy. Now it takes me only a few minutes to totally hook up my dingy, & Im not filthy dirty, like i used to be, with the car dolly. I also find it easier to tow, since the vehicle profile isnt as wide.

The product was exactly what I ordered and fit as easily as etrailer's very informative video tutorial showed that it would. The product was delivered before the expected date. And I was able to easily track the shipment. The best part of the etrailer experience was the extremely helpful staff member, Katie. My card had a problem going thru and Katie was as helpful in clearing that up as she was in assisting with the actual order. I will absolutely recommend etrailer to everyone. 253106

Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ5 in Base Plates

This base plate was as described and relatively easy to install. I watched the installation video several times as I was concerned taking the bumper cover and grill off the CR-V. I also watched to installation video for the Blue Ox base plate as it was slightly different and showed taking the off as one piece instead of two. The process was a bit tricky and I did break one clip on the drivers side. Other than snapping my 1/2" drill bit while drilling the hole, the installation was relatively easy and as portrayed in the installation video. I also purchase two metric bolts as my vehicle had neither on the bottom of the bumper cover. 445763

Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ5 in Base Plates

First I'd like to provide a few comments on e-trailer. I'm a return customer, and will continue to be. The price was right, the delivery was really fast, and the kit arrived with all the parts, and in pristine condition. The big, heavy, part of this kit was well-packed, and even the little metal prongs on the front arrived undamaged. I took the time to watch the e-trailer installation video but it appears that the kit they used in the demo had some minor configuration differences from that delivered. That wasn't really an issue, since the directions in the kit were consistent with the configuration of my kit. But now, about the kit. I installed a previous version Roadmaster base plate kit on a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Sport. It took me about an hour. This "new, improved" version... about six hours, spread over two days. Some was my fault, some bad directions, and some just bad luck, but the design of the kit was not user-installation-friendly, or an improvement of any kind over the older design. First, the new kit has both brackets connected by a large, beefy, bar. Great, except trying to get everything to line up is now much harder since the flanges on the kit are barrrrely wide enough to slip over the frame extensions on the Jeep. If you're off even a hair, they bind and you can't line up the bolt holes. And, with the brackets all in one piece, BOTH sides have to be lined up simultaneously. Lining up the bolt holes by tapping alternate sides with a hammer (my solution) works, but it sure is tedious. Oh, and there is a metal tab on the back side of the bar, behind the wiring prongs (not sure why it's there, maybe it serves a purpose on some other vehicle installation?). This tab is located in an EXTREMELY inconvenient location as, in addition to the problems lining up the bolt holes in the tight-fitting flanges on the frame extensions, you have to slide this tab through a little slot that you cut in the air dam. I found it easiest to NOT attach ANY of the air dam fasteners until I had at least one bolt on each side started. I just hung the air dam on this tab, jacked the whole thing into place, fiddled and hammered until I got a couple bolt holes lined up, and THEN fastened the air dam back in place. So far, the installation was just irritating and tedious, but no worse than some other auto repair work one might undertake. Now comes the "bad directions" part. Roadmaster includes some nuts with little wires tacked on so you can hold the nut in place on the blind side of the frame while you run the bolts in to snug them up. I found it useful to run those bolts through the nuts BEFORE doing anything to clear out the paint on the nut threads so they'll start a little easier. The Roadmaster directions supplied with the kit are VERY SPECIFIC (Step 5), stating that the LOWER nut should be put in place first, and then the UPPER. Since the access is through an opening in the UNDERSIDE of the frame, putting the lower bolt in first blocks access to the upper bolt. I followed the instructions on the first side and that is EXACTLY what happened, causing a significant problem. Since my access to the upper bolt was blocked by the installed lower one, I had to twist and fiddle the upper nut into place. When I started to tighten, the little holder wire bent around the lower bolt, and then broke, before nut had not yet snugged down. If you should find yourself in this awkward position, the quickest and simplest solution is to remove the plastic cover from above the frame - right in front of the grill, where a winch would normally mount - and go in from the top with a wrench to grab that spinning nut. When I installed the bolts on the other side, I did the upper one first, and then the lower, and had no such problems. Once you get them snugged down, they'll pretty much hold themselves so you can torque to the proper spec, and you're done. All in all, this install was MANY times more difficult than the original Roadmaster TWO-PIECE base plate kit for the Jeep Wrangler. Additionally, I don't particularly like the new design anyway, beyond the more difficult install. The huge bar that connects the two brackets (that are independent on the older design) sticks down lower, and reduces clearance in the front a bit. The "EZ twist locks" on the brackets themselves ARE easy to install, though because of clearance with the bar in the kit I have, have to be installed upside down compared with the etrailer video demo. While easy to install, the new hitch point brackets offer no obvious positive visual cue that one can quickly look at when you're hitching up to confirm that they're locked. I guess I'll get used to that, but I don't like it. Though I suppose Roadmaster has done the design work, the new "twist lock" brackets also don't look nearly as durable as the old ones, which simply used a hitch pin to secure the bracket to the piece attached to the frame extension. A MUCH harder install, and a less obviously robust attachment system than the previous design leaves me wondering where the improvement is in the new design. I already owned a Roadmaster tow bar (and like it), so I didn't have much choice. I've towed my new 2016 Jeep with the new bracket, and got back with the Jeep still securely attached to the tow vehicle, so it DOES work. 259161

It arrived in a timely manner was easy to install. My son and I did it in about 2 hours. Perfect fit the plug mounting studs were slightly bent during shipment but easily straightened. The wiring harness took much longer to install but I’m kind of pickie. I was able to feed inside the frame from front to back. Thanks for a great looking product. 476994

I attached an install video for this as well. In addition to the base plates, you will also need a compatible tow...

  • Can 2015 Chevy Colorado 2WD be Flat Towed?
A 2015 Chevy Colorado 2WD can be flat towed, though you would need a Lube Pump Kit from if you had an automatic transmission or a drive shaft disconnect if you had a manual transmission. Once you got those parts, there are a number of parts you're going to need in order to do this, starting with compatible base plates. I recommend the Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plate Kit # RM-523182-5. For a tow bar I recommend going with the Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar # RM-520 because of how easy the tow bar...

The first thing you need to flat tow your 2020 Chevy Colorado is a base plate kit like the Roadmaster # RM-523182-5 which fits your truck and provides the connection point for a tow bar. I attached an install video for this on a similar 2019 Colorado for you to check out as well. In addition to the base plates, you will also need a compatible tow bar, safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking to flat tow your vehicle. The most popular compatible tow bar is the Falcon All Terrain,...

  • Best Recreational Towing Method On A 2017 2 Wheel Drive Chevrolet Colorado
There is a way for you to tow your 2017 Chevrolet Colorado behind your Tiffin motorhome however, according to Chevrolet, the 2 wheel drive models of this vehicle should not be flat towed. Some people have found a way to do this by installing a drive shaft disconnect but this would likely void your vehicle's manufacturer warranty. If you choose to flat tow your Colorado, you would need to find a local shop that can install a drive shaft disconnect. You would also need a few additional...

  • Parts Needed to Maintain Charge on Battery in Flat Towed 2018 Chevy Colorado
When flat-towing a vehicle such as your 2018 Chevy Colorado you can safeguard its battery by installing a Quick Battery Disconnect # RM-766. I also suggest a Charge Line Kit # RM-156-25 which will work along with the motorhome side kit # RM-156-75 if no charge line is present in your RV. This will deliver a maintenance charge to the towed Colorado while you tow. If you need any other related flat towing equipment please let me know and I will be glad to offer recommendations.

You've found the correct part! The Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate # RM-523182-5 are designed to fit on your 2019 Chevy Colorado 2wd. These base plates are compatible with your Roadmaster Falcon 2 # RM-520 tow bar. • Recommended Flat Towing System for 2017 GMC Canyon Diesel with Custom Fab Fours Premium Front Bumper
Fab Fours aftermarket bumpers are not rated to flat towed with so you need to find a base late kit that fits with the bumper. The problem is that aftermarket bumpers and base plates often install in the same location and interfere with one another. I've linked our selection of base plates for you to take a look at. I recommend comparing them to the bumper and seeing if any will fit. If they'll all work I recommend the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Kit # RM-523182-5. Our installers generally...

  • Equipment Needed to Flat Tow 2006 Chevy Colorado
According to Roadmaster, no fuses will need removal. Your truck is capable of being easily flat towed ONLY if it's a 4x4 model. Otherwise, modifications like a driveshaft disconnect will be required for a 2WD model. You can find more information about a disconnect via a Google search. The disconnects I looked at cost close to $ 1000.00, so you might want to look at a different truck if it's not a 4x4. If your truck is a 4x4 model, or if you decide to install a driveshaft disconnect,...

  • Recommended Base Plates To Flat Tow A 2016 Chevy Colorado Z71
I can't find any reason why a Trail Boss edition is any different for base plates than any other model. At this time, there is not a Roadmaster Base Plate Kit confirmed to work with adaptive cruise control sensors, so maybe that is the issue you have run into. For your 2016 Chevy Colorado Z71, I recommend the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms # BX1721. I recommend using Loctite Threadlocker # LT37420 with this installation. For a tow bar, I recommend the Blue Ox Alpha Tow...

  • Which Roadmaster Falcon Tow Bar to Use When Flat Towing 2016 Chevy Colorado
The # RM-520 will work very well instead of the all terrain Falcon # RM-522 but it really depends on where you plan to flat tow. If you find yourself in situations where you can't be lined up straight with the toad or the ground isn't level (which is almost all camp grounds) then it is absolutely worth it to go with the Falcon All-Terrain. If you are rarely off of paved roads where you have plenty of space then the Falcon 2 will work great. But in an effort to plan ahead for all possible...

  • Is There a Certain Order that Tow Bar Connections Need to be Made When Flat Towing
There isn't a specifically recommended time that is required for the wiring connections for tow bar setups. But to be on the safe side I would always disconnect it first (so that you don't forget and accidentally pull away with it connected and damage the wiring), and then make it the last thing you connect once everything else is connected. This will allow you to route it so that it does not interfere with the safety chains possibly. Basically I would recommend developing a routine...
