The drawbars, or front arms, on the crossbar-style series base plate kit are supremely easy to mount and remove. Just insert them into the brackets and twist to lock them in place. To remove, simply twist the arms back and pull them out. Once the drawbars have been removed, the remaining brackets are virtually invisible. On most automobiles, the brackets are mounted within the grille, where they remain not only unseen, but protected from scrapes and scuffs, as well.

Video Transcript for Roadmaster EZ4 Base Plate Kit Installation - 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe

Speaker 1: Today on our 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe, we're gonna take a look at and show you how to install the Roadmaster EZ4 base plate kit. Its part number is RM-523179-4.Here's what your base plate's gonna look like installed. As you can see, we're gonna have our removable arms here on each side. That gives us that connection point we need to connect from our vehicle to the back of our towed vehicle. When not in use, these can be removed so you don't have big arms hanging out of the front of your Tahoe. Just pull the little pin on each side.

That's gonna allow us to rotate those out of the way. It's also gonna have your safety chain connections points. You can see a pretty good size hole there, so you can easily connect your safety chain to that, or if you need to, if you get a bigger hook, you can use it quickly, and then connect to that. The base plate has wiring attachments already connected there, so we'll be able to use our six pole or our four pole, get that screwed onto the front. There's also been a tab already welded on to connect your breakaway switch to.Now, to begin our installation process, we've got our radiator cover up here we're gonna remove. Now, no matter what model you have, you've got six pushpin fasteners right across the backside, and then there's a little variance along this front edge.

It'll either have clips, which you'll want to go underneath and kind of un-clip, or ours has six more pushpin fasteners, which we'll show you how to do now.So, we need to lift up on the center portion of that. Once that comes up high enough, you can then take that lower portion out. We're gonna do that for all 12 fasteners going across this cover. Now, once you've got all those off of there, you can see it's just gonna lift off. If you had those clips on the front, you'd take them off of the back and then you'll just work this up, un-clipping as you go.

Now, we'll just set this aside somewhere safe. Now, once we have that panel out of the way, we're gonna have six bolts across the front end here. They look just like this. I'm gonna use a 10 millimeter socket, and we'll get these removed. Now, if we look in our fender well here, this is our driver's tire. We're gonna be right in front of that.

We have five screws. You'll need a seven millimeter socket, and we're gonna take all five of these out. Now, again, depending on manufacturer's variance, there may be six of these. The one we'll avoid is gonna be this one up. That's not one that we need to take out.Now with the five of those removed, if you look right up at the seam where the body meets the fascia, we've got one that's pointing straight up. We're also gonna be removing that one. Then we'll go over to the passenger's side and do the same thing there. Now we're underneath and in front of both of our tires. You're gonna see that fender liner that comes down. We've got three bolts, one, two, and three right here. There's one push fastener that we're gonna remove. So, the bolts you'll need a 10 millimeter socket. Then you can use a screwdriver or a trim panel tool for this fastener. It's kind of a Christmas tree fastener, so you gotta pull it out a little at a time. We'll go to the driver's side and do the same thing. Now we'll start here in the center of the vehicle underneath, and if we go up just a little bit to the left and to the right, we're gonna have one of these brackets that comes back. Got a single bolt holding it here, so we need to come around the edge and inside of here, we're gonna have one, two, and then the same spot as this one, just on the other side, a third screw to take out. We need to do that on our passenger's side and our driver's side. You're gonna want to use a seven millimeter socket for these to get them backed out. Now, we're gonna pull the skid plate off the bottom here. You're gonna start with two larger bolts. They're kind of farther up here behind the bumper. You want to use a 16 millimeter socket and get those taken out. Then if we come back a little bit further, we've got four 10 millimeter headed bolts that we're gonna take out. We'll just get that set aside. Now if we pull back our fender liner, this is where we took out that seven millimeter screw that ran straight up. We need to come just in on this edge a little bit. You'll see a bracket here. Now, on this bracket, you'll have one, two, and three more of those little seven millimeters screws to remove. Now up here on the top of our fascia, we need to look just to the passenger's side of our hood latch. We've got a plug that lays right up here. We're gonna pull it up out of its little keeper there, pull this locking tab, gonna slide that out, and we'll just press down on that tab. We'll wiggle our plugs to get them separated here. Now starting on our driver's side here, you can see this is where we removed those three little seven millimeter screws. We want to come up from that. You're gonna find a bolt here with a nut on it. We come left of there towards the outside of the vehicle. There's this little bracket that comes back. We're gonna press up on the tab, inside of that square, and pull out on our fascia sightly to release that clip. Now head over to the passenger's side and you'll want to release it there as well. Now we want to start at the edge where the steel body meets the fascia. Just gonna start gently pulling out, and you see how that releases our clips. So, we want to pull up here on our top edge. Then we'll just take this over and we can set it someplace safe. Now with that fascia out of the way, we can put our base plate cross bracket in place. You can see this is gonna fit up. This is the end of your frame rail, that flat spot. You want to just support it right up underneath that on both sides. We're using a couple of pole jacks here, just to keep everything supported. Now we're gonna have our nut plate. This is gonna slide over top of the frame rail. So, you can bring that in just like this. We want that to be as far forward as possible. Once that's in place, we're gonna take our seven inch bolts. I'm gonna get these up and threaded into those nut plates. We've got four of these to do on each side, and one thing you want to keep in mind every fastener that we put in, we're gonna use red lock tite on it. We'll have two of these on the outside and two of these to go on the inside of the frame rail. Now we've got all eight of our bolts started here on our baseplate. That's just gonna allow it to hang loosely. Now we need to turn our attention to the cross member here, see this round cross member It's got an oil line on it that we're gonna pop out, and then also this wire loom above it, so we can pop those clips out. Now, in your kit we have these two spacers. These we're gonna place right behind those fasteners. It's gonna buy us a little bit more space and allow our U bolts that we'll use to hold these in place on. Get us this little bit larger gap, and then we can use a couple of the supplied zip ties just to make sure that doesn't move around anywhere. Now we can bring out support brackets into place. One side's gonna have an angle on it. One side's gonna be flat. That flat side's gonna match up with these two holes, so you want to bring your U bolt around, just like that. The gusset portion, that flat portion, needs to go towards the outside of the frame. Bring our U bolt down through. Then we'll place a lock washer and a nut on each side, and remember we need to add a little bit of lock tite to these two.Now we'll use our shorter half inch bolts, and we're just gonna bring our bracket up so it matches our base plate. Red lock tite, bring that through, place a lock washer and nut on the other side. Now we'll head over to the driver's side and we'll get our bracket put on there as well. Now we want to even out our base plate from side to side. You can go from this flat bracket here, the outside edge, over to the frame, right there. Those are two good fixed points. Once we have these matching on both sides, we'll start tightening up our lower bolts here. Just make sure your base plate doesn't move. Now once with have these snug down slightly, we're gonna measure from the backside of the base plate here to the backside here. We want that to match on both sides. We can bring it out or in as we need to, then we'll tighten down our four remaining bolts. I'm gonna tighten these down. You also want to use a 19 millimeter wrench and socket. Now once we have everything nice and snug, we're gonna go through and torque everything down to the specifications listed in our instructions. Now at this part in the installation, I like to take a break from putting the fascia back on, and it's time to get the components installed you're gonna need for your flat towed setup. Most of the time, that's gonna involve some kind of wiring plug. Here you can see the two rods that are gonna come out. Those are designed to accept the self-tapper. You're gonna be using a four pole round. They've included a little bracket you can put across there and some bolts to put them in. We're using the six round, so we'll be able to just self-tap that right to the arms as they come down. You're gonna have your breakaway switch that's common on just about any braking system out there. There's been a tab welded on right there that allows us to attach that. That's gonna keep the front of our breakaway switch and the front of our wiring pretty close together. Now with the help of an extra set of hands, we just want to mock our fascia up. That'll give us the opportunity to get in behind it and see what we're gonna need to trim out. Now with that held in place, we're gonna start noticing where the base plate is coming in contact with the back of our fascia. We can do the same thing here for our air fitting, or any other attachments that you might have. We need to get an area cleared out. I'm gonna try to start by just bringing the arms through the back of the fascia, then of course we'll need a little hole for our wiring to come through, and we're just gonna start trimming our fascia. We need to get our holes cut out here, and you might have to do this a couple times. You might have to make a cut, put it back up in place, make another cut.Right now we've got all the areas cleared out that we had marked the first time. We're gonna go ahead and test it up there, see if it fits. If it does, great, we'll pull it down, kind of clean it up. If not, we'll just continue to remove a little bit of material until we get everything situated where it'll side through cleanly. Now, the plastic pieces right up here in the corner, it's just gonna depend when you pull this off. They might come with the fascia. They might stay on the car. Regardless, put them back up here in place and put those three screws back in the back before you put your fascia up. It's just much easier to get to them. That's gonna be what the back corners of our fascia slide in right above, just right up here, and that'll help us get everything put into position properly. Now we can go over to the driver's side and do the same thing there. Now if you've made your other adjustments, we'll try to get this put back in place here. Now, once we get each corner in place, we'll put that seven millimeter screw here in the corner. That'll bring that gap together for us. Now on each side, we'll go through and replace the five screws on our wheel well. That's gonna complete our installation of the Roadmaster EZ4 base plate kit. Its part number is RM-523179-4 on our 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe.

The Base Plates are performing as expected, unfortunately chipping paint has plagued these Base Plates. This chipping paint has occurred along both of the leading edge of where the tow bar mounts. This has not been caused from abuse/misuse, it started happening soon after began using. Should not have happened so soon. 710582

This is the adapter kit i needed for my 2019 Jeep Cherokee to flat tow it behind my Class A Motorhome. At the time I first ordered this kit the factory still had to finish the design process as we had purchased the Jeep when it came out in 2018. It took about 6 weeks for the factory to call me to say it was done and could be ordered. My RV mechanic installed it and it went very well according to him. I towed the Jeep this weekend and it worked flawlessly. It replaces the tow hooks on the front of the Jeep. Everything arrived very quickly and in perfect order from eTrailer. 694234

Installed it myself on a 2017 Ford Focus. Watched a few videos on how to pull front bumper and install mount. The hardest part was making the holes in the steel front bumper. I like the fact I can remove the outside mounts that the hitch mounts to. I’ve pulled the car about 5,000 miles behind the rv with no problems. 698216

2014 FIAT 500L Trekking. Shipping was pretty good... received product in 9 days. Kit includes removable arms. Good Instructions. We had never installed anything requiring body removal. Overall the installation took us 4 hrs. Someone familiar with bodywork could shave an hour or 2 off the job. We took some time carefully working the base plate around the AC tubing. Overall it was easier to install than I expected and looks great. 186478

Very Happy! The shipping was fast; 3 days, including Thanks Giving. I was able to instal the base plat myself, just following the installation video on their web site. I watched it a couple of times while I was waiting for delivery, and then followed it step by step during installation. I wouldn't have dared attempt it myself without the video. I also installed the Tail Light Wiring Kit with Bulbs-RM-155 using the same method. Everything went without a problem. I will be buying from eTrailer again. 588968

All was delivered and I have installed it. Only thing wrong with the RM-521448-4 Roadmaster Crossbar-Style base plate kit was that one of the 1-*1/2" x 3"threaded backing plate would not tighten down. Had to toss it and put in heavy duty washer and Nut and tighten it down. Otherwise great product and easy to install. 658514

Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ4 in Base Plates

I received the RM-521567-4 very quickly with free shipping. I watched the Base Plate Kit video several times before I started the install. I Drove my CR-V upon a set of ramps and started tearing the front end off. Actually it was easier than I thought after watching and listing to the video. The only hard part was drilling the 1/2 inch hole in the sub-frame of the car. I did not have to trim the vertical frame bolts off as shown in the video in my 2013 CR-V. It took me 5 hours to install the Kit on my Honda. I have installed the base plate kit on my 2 previous TOADS, but I think If you can use a few tools this is not a very difficult job. Watch the video for taking the fascia and grill off it's a little tricky, but it snaps right off and back on just like the video. Pay attention where the plastic trim clips go back in the front and fender well. This new version (-4) with the twist on and off base plates is better than the older version (-1) I had before. It is much easier to put on and off the car for towing. My CR-V is black so with the plates off you can barely see the receivers. Great product! 207980

I also later found cheaper prices on a few of the items and submitted the info for the 110% lower price guarantee and received the refund within a few hours. This was my 4th install of a RM base plate. Armed with several variants of written and video instructions we carefully started disassembling a new truck... Like the others base plates, everything fit. I have a 2018 GMC Canyon Denali 4x4 and the instructions were for a Chevy Colorado/Canyon/ZR2 and were off a bit. The GMC Denali install seems to be closer to the Chevy ZR2. In a few cases the trim fasteners and locations differed but all in all, reasonably similiar. Some differences: I did not have to remove the air dam. The fascia was notched at the bottom. Criticism: The width of vertical receiver plate introduced a gap between the 45 degree bumper core end brace and the truck frame. I might weld or bolt a shim to compensate. 579349

I purchased this EZ4 base plate to work in conjunction with the Falcon2 tow bar. It fit perfectly on my Wrangler Unlimited, and is tucked mostly out of site when not used. The two baseplate arms bolted to the cross bar of the Falcon2 are easily removed and stored away when not in use. Installation because of the weight and tight fit to the Wrangler frame, was found to be much easier with two people. 554274

I installed the trailer hitch first and it was quite simple, total time about 1 hour. Next I installed the EZ4 base plate kit on our 2017 GMC Terrain, a little bit more difficult, but the step by step video made the whole process much simpler, in fact, I kept my laptop in the garage while I was doing the installation and stopped/started as it did the work. I can't thank you enough for the video clips, they are a tremendous help. We will be leaving in a week or so, can't wait to try it out. 515670

well I finally put my tow bar base plate on. I'm 82 years old so I had my doubts as to weather I could do this so I checked out a location that could have one this job for me but they wanted a hundred and fifteen dollars an hour labor so I said to hell with that . I looked at the directions that you sent with the Base Plate and said to myself, I can do this. Well I did it. Your instructions were dead on and I had no problem at all, In fact I hade a little fun doing it. Thanks a lot It's going to be great. 486722

Works very well on my 2012 Honda CRV. However, the wiring holder is obtrusive so I cut it off and used an alternative mounting method fo the wiring. Medium difficulty to install, but if you're handy and have the correct tools, it takes a couple of hours or so. Be sure to also buy the rubber inserts for looks and protection when not being towed. 334883

Great product for my 2014 Wrangler. Good materials, solid attachment to vehicle, and looks good. The e trailer installation video was great for assisting installation. Made the install much quicker and easier. The most difficult procedure for me was disconnecting the wiring harness on the back of the bumper. An old tack puller (or tool of similar design) would have been great for leveraging the pins out of their holes. Cutting the air dam was a slow process to ensure I didn't cut too much. A paper template to mark where to cut the air dam would make this process much simpler. Again, I can't emphasize enough how great the installation video was for making the steps easier. 126011

The instructions were good and the passenger side of the base plate fit perfectly, but the driver's side did not. Had to 'drill out' the holes on the top and the inside, because the pre drilled holes we off about 1/8 inch. This misfit resulted in a lot longer to complete the project. 58787

Doug, just purchased a 2014 Cadillac srx 4 looking for base plates which you have. Now I have a roadmaster falcon tow bar that I tow my jeep wrangler with, will I have to change anything besides the new base plates to tow the SRX ???

-- comment by: Henry R - 06/05/2014

I have checked with our contacts at Roadmaster and in addition to the EZ Base Plate kit that is confirmed as a fit for your 2014 Cadillac SRX, you will need a set of the Quick disconnect plates # RM-222
Roadmaster Tow Bar Quick Disconnects - Car Side Only
$41.95
to connect with your Falcon Tow Bar. These will mount to your Cadillac base plate and will connect to your Falcon Tow Bar crossbar. These quick disconnects will allow you to easily change from towing your Jeep to your Cadillac. In addition to your tow bar and base plates, please make sure that you have all the necessary components needed for a complete flat towing system for your Cadillac like: safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking. Depending on how you have things set up for your Jeep you maybe able to transfer all of these components to your Cadillac.

Product installed easily hardest part was finding drill sharp enough to drill holes. Took about 4 hrs at a 75 year olds pace. Looks nice and fit my existing tow bar with no problems. You may want to remind buyers they need a plastic pop rivet tool, not easy to find in local auto stores. I took advantage of my friend who owns a body shop, it took 2 minutes. 444111

Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ4 in Base Plates

The units went on my Chevy truck great and they work well the only problem is I can't take off my tow bar unless I unbolt it from the base plates so I have to leave the unit on all the time. It would take 4 bolts to remove . Then I could unlock the base plates and turn them in order to remove them. 443465

The base plates they are working fine I dont remove them they stay on all the time it has been 2 years now the tow bar that I use is bolted on so I would have to remove them to get the s out I should do this some time so they dont rust in place but real nice right now .

This hitch installed on our 2007 CRV easily and has worked great over the past year. Installation was completed by myself with no other hands. I did block up one side of the hitch with wood to the approximate height to aid in mounting the other side. Vehicle back end was raised via car ramps. All mounting holes lined up fine. The associated brake & tail light wiring kit made wiring easy as well. 717471

Product arrived on time but was a lot harder to put on than shown on the video. I almost have it done but very hard for an old man. (80) 711957

Same as with the review of the wiring harness, this was done at a trusted repair shop. I took it there, as I had run out of time to do it at home. I am glad I did. It can be done at home, but it was a much bigger job than I or my trusted mechanic friend had expected. He did an excellent job with the advantage of a lift, a shop full of tools, and a lot of mechanical experience. Now that it is in and has 1,000+ miles on it, it is a really nice set up. 711939

What can I say...but WOW. We have been towing our 2014 Kia Soul for the past year with absolutely no issues with our towing system. I highly recommend to those who are looking for an affordable towing system to buy the Roadmaster Falcon 2. I'm looking forward to many more miles of use, 707029

I bought this from etrailer for my 2017 Malibu. I went to etrailer's home office in Missouri and they installed it for free. This is something worth money as I have installed one of these in my old malibu and it is a major job for a rookie. They allowed me to stay in their business parking lot in my motor over night while they installed. These people are great people to work with and very helpful and reasonably priced. I have bought many items from them in the past and will continue in the future. Thanks!!! 703084

The Roadmaster base plate looks to be a well built product with good welds and fit. The instructions are clear and the base plate bolted right in. The tab for electrical plug was bent but easily straightened. I t could use some additional protection in shipping. 688227

  • Comparing the Roadmaster Direct-Connect and Crossbar-Style Base Plate Kits
  • The only difference between the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kits like part # RM-523179-5 and the Roadmaster Crossbar-Style Base Plate Kits like part # RM-523179-4 are the removable arms. The Direct-Connect style means you can attach a tow bar to this like the Roadmaster Nighthawk All Terrain Tow Bar part # RM-677 without the need for a crossbar to go between the two arms. The Crossbar-Style style means you will need the crossbar that goes between the two arms like the Roadmaster...

  • Flat Towing Setup For 2016 GMC Yukon Denali
  • As long as the 2016 GMC Yukon Denali has 4WD with a two-speed transfer case that has a Neutral and 4 wheel drive low setting, you can flat tow it with all 4 wheels on the ground behind the 2018 Allegro Bus. If the GMC has 2WD, it has to be towed with a dolly with the rear wheels off the ground. When flat towing or dolly towing, the battery does need to be disconnected. You can use a Roadmaster quick battery disconnect part # RM-766. The Roadmaster battery disconnect allows you to wire in...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2017 GMC Yukon Denali
  • To flat tow your 2017 GMC Yukon Denali, you will need a base plate kit, tow bar, safety cables, a lighting solution, and a supplemental braking system. Before proceeding, I do recommend taking a look at the owner's manual for your vehicle for any restrictions or guidelines pertaining to flat towing or "Recreational Towing". I did take a look at the online version of your Yukon's manual and saw that as long as you do not have the 2WD model, you can flat tow the vehicle with all 4 wheels...

  • The Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plate Kit # RM-523179-5 referenced in your question is confirmed to fit your 2018 GMC Yukon XL and is compatible with the excellent Sterling All Terrain Tow Bar # RM-576. However, as you mentioned, the included safety cable anchors will not fit the base plates. To use the cables that are included with the Sterling Tow Bar, they will simply need to be attached to the frame of the vehicle or welded to the receiver portion of the bracket. Otherwise, you can use a standard...
