Video Transcript for Roadmaster Base Plate Kit Installation - 2014 Honda CR-V

Today on this 2014 Honda CRV, we're going to install part number RN-521567-4. This is a Road Master Easy Forward base plate kit with removable arms. Let's go ahead and show the operation of the base plate. These are the removable arms. This tab right here lines up with the slot on the inside. Then rotate it and this pin will lock into place.

This cannot come out. That was the driver's side and the same thing applies to the passenger side. That's how the arms operate. Now we'll go ahead and show you how the base plate is installed on the vehicle. To install the base plate, we need to go ahead and open up the hood and remove the front bumper cover or fascia. We'll go ahead and loosen the fascia first from the bumper core support.

We've got these four plastic fasteners. We'll pull out the centers with a flat blade screw driver and get them started. Sometimes you can pull them out with your fingers, but a lot of times they catch. We can go to the bottom of the vehicle now. We're looking at the passenger side.

We've got another plastic fastener to remove and a bolt. A 10mm socket on this one. Let's do the same thing over on the driver's side. Go ahead and cross the center. We've got four more plastic fasteners to remove.

Now there's some fasteners in the fender wells that we have to remove. We're looking at the driver's side. We've got to remove this Phillips head screw, this plastic fastener, and one up here. Driver's side done. Do the same thing on the passenger side. In this general area right here, there's a plastic fastener connecting these two pieces. We've got to pull back on the inner fender well liner to get access to it. It's hard to get to at it as well. The more of the fender well you can pull back, the better. This is the fastener right here. Just basically reach in with a screw driver and try to pull out as best as you can. We're done with the passenger side. We'll do the same thing, repeat your process over on the driver's side and remove that same fastener. We're going to loosen up the fender flare here. We'll pull down on the bottom part of the bumper fascia. It will pop loose. Then we can go ahead and pull this back out and away. There's a series of fasteners in here as well. It may be a good idea to use a trim panel tool to release it, one at a time, right here, right here. We've got our fender well loose. Now we need to remove this screw to get access to our screw. Let's remove this same set of fasteners back over on our passenger side. We need to go ahead and remove the grill itself. There's a couple of fasteners here and here. Basically you just get a good grip on the grill and pull straight out to to release it. They just unsnap. Here's one of those yellow clips right here. It's holding the grill. We've got one side done and I need to work off the other side. There it goes. There will be four more of these yellow clips on the inside we'll have to break loose as well. This car has fog lights so we've got to remove the electrical for them. There's a small tab we've got to push down to release it. Then we can pull down the wire harness and we can disconnect it. There it is. That hurt. We're almost ready to take off the bumper cover. There's a series of snaps along the edge here. We just need to pull straight out to release them. There it goes. Sometimes it helps to wiggle them around a little bit. Then we pull this. We've got the passenger side loosened. We'll do the same thing over on the driver's side and then pull off the fascia. Sometimes they're hard to release. When you pull down a little bit, you can see the clip and with a very small screw driver, you can pop it up and then pull it away. There it goes. Last two clips are these yellow guys here and here. Small screw driver to push on the inside edge of the tab. Then we can go ahead and pull it out. Now we can go ahead and slowly remove our bumper cover and put it in a safe place. These plastic shrouds are air dams. There's one here and one here on both sides of the front of the vehicle. We need to go ahead and pull off the plastic fasteners for here. This whole assembly pops out, one on top, one on the bottom. Driver's side only has the one fastener on top, but there's one more sensor that we have to disconnect on the bottom. This temperature sensor right here, we just need to go ahead and temporarily remove. This lock should be eventually re-attached to our base plate. You can actually reach in and squeeze these two together. Here's the other other plastic clip. We're just going to put this out of the way for now. Now we'll go ahead and remove the hardware for the bumper core. One, two, three, four bolts on each side. We'll use a 12mm socket to remove these fasteners. Use the extension through this hole right here. A 12mm ratchet wrench works good in this spot right here. We'll go ahead and remove the remaining fasteners and leave these two on top until we're ready to take the whole thing off. We'll take off the top two bolts and remove the bumper core. There's still a little tab right there to help hold it up. The tab we was talking about earlier, we just need to flatten it out. Our base plate is going to fit in this area right here, going all the way across. We can cut it off here. Maybe go up a couple of inches or so and cut off this section here. This should give us more than enough clearance. On the driver's side, this should be enough like that. Cut on the top and the bottom. I'm just going to use some tin snips. For the inside edge, I'm going to use a knife and score it and break it loose. All right, let's go ahead and take our base plate. We'll go ahead and do a quick test fit in case we need to cut out any more. Maybe this little last bit on the bottom here we could probably cut off, and I think we'll be good to go. Next we'll go ahead and cover some of the hardware that is used to attach the base plate to a frame. This metric bolt, lock washer, and flat washer will replace the preexisting fasteners that we're in here. We'll also use some red lock tight on the threads as well. The lock tight part number we're using is LT37420. We'll go ahead and do a couple of the bolts. Then we'll go ahead and take our base plate and put it on for good on our vehicle. When we put our base plate up, we'll go ahead and make sure we stay away from this line here. We'll have to move it around a little bit to put it into place. We just need to again loosely start it for now. Then we'll go ahead and install the new fasteners in these locations. With all our hardware loosely installed, we'll make sure the base plate sits securely on the frame. Nothing is being pinched. We'll go ahead and tighten them down and then torque them down as specified in the instructions. The new fasteners will use a 13mm socket. As you tighten it down, double check to make sure this line right here doesn't rub on any part of the base plate. After we tighten them down, we'll torque then down as described in the instructions. This is a really tight fit here. We're using a crow's foot or if you have a smaller torque wrench, that will inaudible 15:28. Next we need to move some ground wires. The reason why is that we need to drill through the box section of the framework here. When we drill this hole and there's some wires on the other side. We need to remove the fender well out of the way, just on the driver's side and relocate the ground wires. Now we need to loosen up the fender well here. There will be three more plastic fasteners that we have to remove. There we go. Let's just go ahead and move this out of the way for now. Just flex it and push it behind the wheel. There's our ground wires we need to relocate. We'll go ahead and remove this bolt with a 10mm socket. We'll also just transfer everything to this threaded fitting right here. There you go. We'll use the base plate as a template and go ahead and drill out a half inch hole. Sometimes this bolt right here goes all the way up through into here. You may have to remove the bolt sometimes and cut off the end of a bolt to give room for a bolt that goes horizontal. Sometimes you can put just a slight angle on it and miss it, but you want to try it first and see if you need to take that bolt out or not. Then re-install it when you're done. This bolt will go through first. Then on the inside, we'll get the large block with a flat washer, lock washer, and a nut, and to lock it. We can go ahead and tighten and torque this down as specified by the instructions. You'll need a 3/4 inch socket and a wrench for this. Now we'll go ahead and repeat the same process over on our passenger side. There's a bolt in this side that's going to be an issue. We'll go ahead and take out this bolt and shorten it up. To remove this bolt, we need a 17mm socket. If you do have to remove the bolts, you definitely want to remove them one at a time and then reinstall. You don't want two bolts out at the same time. Our bolts are going to be in the way and this time, we'll go ahead and cut the bolt off. We're just going to use a cut-off wheel. Maybe a quarter inch is all we need off the top. Let's go ahead and continue drilling off the other side. It's always a good idea to inspect and make sure there are no other lines back there. Pull your drill through. Just like our driver's side, we'll go ahead and install the same amount of hardware. This should be a good trick. Once we have our hardware installed, we'll go ahead and torque them down as specified in the instructions. Let's go ahead and put our sub-frame bolt back into place. We'll go ahead and tighten it down. This is our air temperature that used to be down here. We're just going to take it and just zip tie it to this open hole right here where there used to be a fastener that held this to the bumper core. Once we have it zip tied in place, we'll go ahead and cut off the tail. Then we can go ahead and do our first test fit with the bumper cover to see how everything fits back together. Let's go ahead and put our bumper cover temporarily in place. We'll make sure that the base plate fits the opening in the bumper cover. This structure here is intended for your wiring harness. Make sure you have plenty of room for that. This is a bracket for two different styles of connectors, but that will be installed later. Once we're satisfied with the fit of the bumper cover, we can go ahead and put it on for good. Before we do that, this would be a good opportunity to install your breakaway switch for a supplemental braking system before you put this all back on for good. This is our breakaway switch for supplemental braking system. This does not come with the base plate, but now would be a good time to go ahead and install it. Just for quick tip, we took ours and actually used the hardware that came with it, but we added an extra nut to raise it up just a little bit so we can help get easy access to the opening along with the wiring that we'll eventually put on for a towing harness. To avoid from drilling into any sensitive parts up here, we just simple vise-gripped a small piece of metal to drill actually into it, but to only go through the sheet metal here and not any further up into here. Let's go ahead and put our bumper cover on once and for all. Once we've got it just temporarily in place, once again, we'll go ahead and hook up our wires back to the fog lights and then continue on reattaching the fascia. We'll go ahead and put our fender liner back into place. Then after that, it's just mainly the reverse procedure of taking the bumper cover off. We'll go ahead and work on getting our trim back together at the bottom here as well as our fender flare. We'll get that one rivet, that plastic rivet that's on the inside here. Then I think we can put the rest of our fender well back together. We're done for our driver's side. We'll do the same thing on the passenger side. I know this is a little bit out of order, but I hope you don't grill me over this. With the front fascia fastened back into place, that will finish it for our install. That will do it for part number RN-521567-4 on our 2014 Honda CRV. .

I received the RM-521567-4 very quickly with free shipping. I watched the Base Plate Kit video several times before I started the install. I Drove my CR-V upon a set of ramps and started tearing the front end off. Actually it was easier than I thought after watching and listing to the video. The only hard part was drilling the 1/2 inch hole in the sub-frame of the car. I did not have to trim the vertical frame bolts off as shown in the video in my 2013 CR-V. It took me 5 hours to install the Kit on my Honda. I have installed the base plate kit on my 2 previous TOADS, but I think If you can use a few tools this is not a very difficult job. Watch the video for taking the fascia and grill off it's a little tricky, but it snaps right off and back on just like the video. Pay attention where the plastic trim clips go back in the front and fender well. This new version (-4) with the twist on and off base plates is better than the older version (-1) I had before. It is much easier to put on and off the car for towing. My CR-V is black so with the plates off you can barely see the receivers. Great product! 207980

Works very well on my 2012 Honda CRV. However, the wiring holder is obtrusive so I cut it off and used an alternative mounting method fo the wiring. Medium difficulty to install, but if you're handy and have the correct tools, it takes a couple of hours or so. Be sure to also buy the rubber inserts for looks and protection when not being towed. 334883

I have to say etrailer is one of the best companies I have dealt with on the internet. They are the least expensive and the fastest responder I know of. And the Honda base plate installation was relatively easy. Took me a couple of days but since I'm retired I didn't push it. Besides, it's hotter'n heck here in southern Florida. Again, great company and great product. 561817

I received the product sooner than expected. I have it installed. Difficulty level was about what I expected. Looks like a well made product. I did use hardened washers instead of the soft washers. The base plate kit was complete and well packaged. The on line video was very well done and provided exact details on how to install the base plate. I was able to put the whole thing on in less than 2 hours and the only trouble I had was reinstalling the plastic snap in rivets in the wheel wells. The base plate fit perfectly and drilling the holes was much easier to do than I thought it would be. I did not have a hoist and did the project on a gravel driveway. I would recommend using a lift or having access to a solid driveway and jack and jack stands to make it a little easier to take the plastic rivets on the bottom out but I would not hesitate to tackle this project again. Thanks again for the great video!!! 277256

This was part of many Roadmaster components I ordered from etrailer.com to set up my 2014 Honda CRV as a toad. Etrailer's website is excellent and their review videos and installation videos are very helpful. Their tech service department is excellent as well. The baseplate is well made and weld quality is very good. Good design. Installing this product takes some pretty good mechanic skills. The installation video on etrailer's website is a must see. It is very helpful in locating on the pins, clips, and releases for the bumper fascia and grill. I am sure I would have broke something without this video. Instead, it went flawlessly. Thank you etrailer. 234534

Roadmaster towing equipment is well made and some of the finest available. I also think highly of etrailer - they are very helpful and ship products promptly. I have purchased towing equipment from them in the past. All equipment and parts arrived in good order. The instructions to install the mounting bracket (base plate) are well written, in color and easy to follow. In addition, it helps tremendously that etrailer has an installation video on their website. I will install this bracket myself (2 - 3 hours work) and use it to tow a 2013 Honda CR-V. Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ4 in Base Plates

All was delivered and I have installed it. Only thing wrong with the RM-521448-4 Roadmaster Crossbar-Style base plate kit was that one of the 1-*1/2" x 3"threaded backing plate would not tighten down. Had to toss it and put in heavy duty washer and Nut and tighten it down. Otherwise great product and easy to install. 658514

This was my 4th install of a RM base plate. Armed with several variants of written and video instructions we carefully started disassembling a new truck... Like the others base plates, everything fit. I have a 2018 GMC Canyon Denali 4x4 and the instructions were for a Chevy Colorado/Canyon/ZR2 and were off a bit. The GMC Denali install seems to be closer to the Chevy ZR2. In a few cases the trim fasteners and locations differed but all in all, reasonably similiar. Some differences: I did not have to remove the air dam. The fascia was notched at the bottom. Criticism: The width of vertical receiver plate introduced a gap between the 45 degree bumper core end brace and the truck frame. I might weld or bolt a shim to compensate. 579349

The instructions were good and the passenger side of the base plate fit perfectly, but the driver's side did not. Had to 'drill out' the holes on the top and the inside, because the pre drilled holes we off about 1/8 inch. This misfit resulted in a lot longer to complete the project. 58787

well I finally put my tow bar base plate on. I'm 82 years old so I had my doubts as to weather I could do this so I checked out a location that could have one this job for me but they wanted a hundred and fifteen dollars an hour labor so I said to hell with that . I looked at the directions that you sent with the Base Plate and said to myself, I can do this. Well I did it. Your instructions were dead on and I had no problem at all, In fact I hade a little fun doing it. Thanks a lot It's going to be great. 486722

Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ4 in Base Plates

I installed the trailer hitch first and it was quite simple, total time about 1 hour. Next I installed the EZ4 base plate kit on our 2017 GMC Terrain, a little bit more difficult, but the step by step video made the whole process much simpler, in fact, I kept my laptop in the garage while I was doing the installation and stopped/started as it did the work. I can't thank you enough for the video clips, they are a tremendous help. We will be leaving in a week or so, can't wait to try it out. 515670

Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ4 in Base Plates

I purchased this EZ4 base plate to work in conjunction with the Falcon2 tow bar. It fit perfectly on my Wrangler Unlimited, and is tucked mostly out of site when not used. The two baseplate arms bolted to the cross bar of the Falcon2 are easily removed and stored away when not in use. Installation because of the weight and tight fit to the Wrangler frame, was found to be much easier with two people. 554274

Doug, just purchased a 2014 Cadillac srx 4 looking for base plates which you have. Now I have a roadmaster falcon tow bar that I tow my jeep wrangler with, will I have to change anything besides the new base plates to tow the SRX ???

I have checked with our contacts at Roadmaster and in addition to the EZ Base Plate kit that is confirmed as a fit for your 2014 Cadillac SRX, you will need a set of the Quick disconnect plates # RM-222
Roadmaster Tow Bar Quick Disconnects - Car Side Only
$41.95
to connect with your Falcon Tow Bar. These will mount to your Cadillac base plate and will connect to your Falcon Tow Bar crossbar. These quick disconnects will allow you to easily change from towing your Jeep to your Cadillac. In addition to your tow bar and base plates, please make sure that you have all the necessary components needed for a complete flat towing system for your Cadillac like: safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking. Depending on how you have things set up for your Jeep you maybe able to transfer all of these components to your Cadillac.

Do you have a question about this Base Plate?

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2014 Honda CR-V
  • The Roadmaster Falcon part # RM-520 is a very popular and great tow bar. You have the crossbar assembly part # 910021-00 that comes with it which means you can use either base plate kit you mentioned. The difference is that the EZ5 # RM-521567-5 does NOT require the use of that crossbar and the EX4 part # RM-521567-4 does. I prefer simpler installs that require fewer parts whenever available so if it were me I would go with the EZ5 part # RM-521567-5 which does not need the bar....

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2014 Honda CRV behind a Class C Motorhome
  • To flat tow your 2014 Honda CR-V you'll need a tow bar, base plates, wiring, supplemental braking, and likely a high-low adapter. You'll also want to consult your owner's manual to make sure your vehicle is able to be flat towed without damaging it. From my research the CR-V will be just fine with all 4 wheels down. The Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar # RM-520 is a great option to tow your Honda. It has a large hookup raidus and self-aligns so hooking up is easier and smoother. It connects...

For lighting you can use the diode kit, # RM-15267, and not have to worry about cutting into the taillight housing. This will splice into your taillight wiring to allow your tow vehicle to control the taillight assemblies of the towed vehicle. This comes with a round 6-way connector that you...

  • Difference Between Roadmaster EZ4 and EZ5 Base Plates for 2014 Honda CR-V
  • As you mentioned in your question, both the Roadmaster EZ4 # RM-521567-4 and EZ5 # RM-521567-5 Base Plate Kits are confirmed to fit your 2014 Honda CR-V. The primary difference between the two models is that the EZ5 does not use a quick-connect crossbar to attach to the tow bar. This will in turn provide a cleaner, less obtrusive look. The drawback, however, and why I tend to recommend the EZ4 model, is that the design will not accommodate many accessories that mount to the crossbar...
