Note: Roadmaster direct-connect base plates will only work with Roadmaster tow bars that slide into a trailer hitch, such as the Sterling, Blackhawk, Blackhawk 2, Falcon, or Falcon 2. These base plates will not work with tow bars that require a hitch ball.

The drawbars, or front arms, on this base plate kit are supremely easy to mount and remove. Just insert them into the brackets and twist to lock them in place. To remove each arm, simply tug the built-in pull pin to disengage the lock, twist the arm back and pull it out of the bracket. Once the drawbars have been removed, the remaining brackets are virtually invisible. On most automobiles, the brackets are mounted within the grille, where they remain not only unseen, but protected from scrapes and scuffs as well.

This was an easy install for the bracket attaching to my Grand Cherokee. To be fair it took about 10 hours but this is including the wiring for the lights and I was pretty anal about the routings making extra sure of no pinching points, etc. This was my first time ever doing such. Instructions are good and you need to take your time. This is a high quality product that I would recommend to a friend. I used my Armada to do a test tow to make sure everything worked properly. Thumbs up on the test drive. 854396

Well so far the base plate has been received and packaging was excellent as was speed of shipment. I have not yet put it on the Grand Cherokee - a bit too much snow. So as soon I complete that job I'll do a follow up post with some pictures. 351462

I 1st bought the Blue Ox and found that it called for too many modifications and it was thin and flimsy. When I received the Roadmaster bass plate, I quickly seen that it was a better product. It's a thiker metal and had easy direction to follow. I've towed over 50,000 miles with it and haven't had any problems. 694420

The roadmaster rm-523193-5 arrived as promised. The box the base plate came is was damage, and a good 5 inch whole was exposed. Good news, was that upon opening the box nothing was damage. The base plate installed as intended, and etrailer videos was so helpful. Very happy with the way it looks on my 2018 Equinox . 718710

From start to finish I probably had an hour thirty in this install. I tried multiple cutting tools for trimming the lower plastic panel. A good razor knife worked the best for me. After I loose fit the bar on my jeep, I took the plastic valance panel loose and let it hang on the tow bar. I was able to access the bottom bolts easier and use my screw driver to hold the inner flat nuts on the side ones easier as well. I had to clean the threads on the bottom flat plates which I wish I had seen before I started the assembly. All in all no biggie. My wiring bracket piping was bent in transit. I was able to bend them back in place and then up slightly to make it easier for me to plug in my motorhome harness. Great engineering. Simple process. I really like the way the tow bar sits under and slightly behind the front of the bumper. Clean set up. 229558

Review from a similar EZ5 in Base Plates

I did this installation for my mother- and father-in-law. The base plate is VERY heavy duty. It is welded very well and painted adequately. Being shipped in a cardboard box with little packaging, it arrived with paint worn off the little electrical connector mount tubes and other places. The fit was good except for that the top portions of the mounting plates (each end where the base plate is bolted to the car frame), that are bent horizontal for the top-most bolts, are not bent completely to a 90-degree angle--I had to wail on them with a mini-sledge to bend them over enough to be able to get the top bolts into the weld nuts on the car frame. Also, the instructions are vague or lacking in a number of ways. The instructions called out fasteners as "Phillips screw," "10mm (head) bolt" and "plastic fastener." Since I needed to gather tools to take with me for the 12.5 mile trip to my in-laws' place, I had to guess what the "plastic fasteners" were. I found out that the "plastic fasteners" were push rivets-- they are easiest to remove using two straight-blade screwdrivers. And step 7 of the instructions sets up a person to ruin some very expensive parts. Step 7 says to pull hard and straight out to release the grill from the two yellow clips near the headlights (which was OK) and the four yellow clips along the bottom of the grill (which was not OK). Those four yellow clips at the bottom of the grill each have four little retainer legs that clip into all four edges of the holes into which they clip. Instructions for other manufacturers products explain how to carefully unfasten those clips so as not to break anything. But the Roadmaster instructions say to just pull real hard. I found that those four lower clips don't have to be released (the grill does not need to be removed from the fascia) in order to release the two yellow clips shown in Figure M of the instructions--the installer need only pull back on each end of the grill, while it is still fastened to the the fascia by the four lower yellow clips, to be able to insert a flat-blade screwdriver between parts and release those yellow clips--the whole fascia and grill lifts off the vehicle at that point. In between the instructions for pulling the grill off and releasing the two yellow clips in Figure M is an instruction saying to "pull out on corner of the fascia to remove it from the locking strip as indicated by the yellow lines in Figure L..." What is not said in the instructions is that below those yellow lines shown in Figure L are seams between the ends of the fascia and the front fenders. Those seams contain snap-and-hook features molded into the plastic parts which, if just yanked apart, will break (I know this because I broke them on one side). The snap-and-hook features can be released by carefully pulling the fascia away from the fender, to expose the features, and then using a straight blade screwdriver to push each of the three hooks out of their mating snaps--nothing gets broken (I know this because I did it successfully). Other then those things, the installation was pretty straight-forward. I don't know how well the product works because I only did the installation yesterday and my in-laws won't try using it until next week. 229996

Product arrived very fast. Packaged well. I installed it as per instructions . Watching a video was a great h Ed lp after reading the instructions. Everything installed as expected. Took about 3 hours. I did drop a nut a nd could not find it so had my buddy run to hardware store to buy a 1/2 " nut and lock washer. I did not have access To a lift, So running the car up on blocks 4"high helped access The underside of the cowling. It was a challenge to get my fat finger holding a nut and washer into 2 tight spots but that is what I expect doing this type of installation. 572466

The product was exactly what I ordered and fit as easily as etrailer's very informative video tutorial showed that it would. The product was delivered before the expected date. And I was able to easily track the shipment. The best part of the etrailer experience was the extremely helpful staff member, Katie. My card had a problem going thru and Katie was as helpful in clearing that up as she was in assisting with the actual order. I will absolutely recommend etrailer to everyone. 253106

Review from a similar EZ5 in Base Plates

First I'd like to provide a few comments on e-trailer. I'm a return customer, and will continue to be. The price was right, the delivery was really fast, and the kit arrived with all the parts, and in pristine condition. The big, heavy, part of this kit was well-packed, and even the little metal prongs on the front arrived undamaged. I took the time to watch the e-trailer installation video but it appears that the kit they used in the demo had some minor configuration differences from that delivered. That wasn't really an issue, since the directions in the kit were consistent with the configuration of my kit. But now, about the kit. I installed a previous version Roadmaster base plate kit on a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Sport. It took me about an hour. This "new, improved" version... about six hours, spread over two days. Some was my fault, some bad directions, and some just bad luck, but the design of the kit was not user-installation-friendly, or an improvement of any kind over the older design. First, the new kit has both brackets connected by a large, beefy, bar. Great, except trying to get everything to line up is now much harder since the flanges on the kit are barrrrely wide enough to slip over the frame extensions on the Jeep. If you're off even a hair, they bind and you can't line up the bolt holes. And, with the brackets all in one piece, BOTH sides have to be lined up simultaneously. Lining up the bolt holes by tapping alternate sides with a hammer (my solution) works, but it sure is tedious. Oh, and there is a metal tab on the back side of the bar, behind the wiring prongs (not sure why it's there, maybe it serves a purpose on some other vehicle installation?). This tab is located in an EXTREMELY inconvenient location as, in addition to the problems lining up the bolt holes in the tight-fitting flanges on the frame extensions, you have to slide this tab through a little slot that you cut in the air dam. I found it easiest to NOT attach ANY of the air dam fasteners until I had at least one bolt on each side started. I just hung the air dam on this tab, jacked the whole thing into place, fiddled and hammered until I got a couple bolt holes lined up, and THEN fastened the air dam back in place. So far, the installation was just irritating and tedious, but no worse than some other auto repair work one might undertake. Now comes the "bad directions" part. Roadmaster includes some nuts with little wires tacked on so you can hold the nut in place on the blind side of the frame while you run the bolts in to snug them up. I found it useful to run those bolts through the nuts BEFORE doing anything to clear out the paint on the nut threads so they'll start a little easier. The Roadmaster directions supplied with the kit are VERY SPECIFIC (Step 5), stating that the LOWER nut should be put in place first, and then the UPPER. Since the access is through an opening in the UNDERSIDE of the frame, putting the lower bolt in first blocks access to the upper bolt. I followed the instructions on the first side and that is EXACTLY what happened, causing a significant problem. Since my access to the upper bolt was blocked by the installed lower one, I had to twist and fiddle the upper nut into place. When I started to tighten, the little holder wire bent around the lower bolt, and then broke, before nut had not yet snugged down. If you should find yourself in this awkward position, the quickest and simplest solution is to remove the plastic cover from above the frame - right in front of the grill, where a winch would normally mount - and go in from the top with a wrench to grab that spinning nut. When I installed the bolts on the other side, I did the upper one first, and then the lower, and had no such problems. Once you get them snugged down, they'll pretty much hold themselves so you can torque to the proper spec, and you're done. All in all, this install was MANY times more difficult than the original Roadmaster TWO-PIECE base plate kit for the Jeep Wrangler. Additionally, I don't particularly like the new design anyway, beyond the more difficult install. The huge bar that connects the two brackets (that are independent on the older design) sticks down lower, and reduces clearance in the front a bit. The "EZ twist locks" on the brackets themselves ARE easy to install, though because of clearance with the bar in the kit I have, have to be installed upside down compared with the etrailer video demo. While easy to install, the new hitch point brackets offer no obvious positive visual cue that one can quickly look at when you're hitching up to confirm that they're locked. I guess I'll get used to that, but I don't like it. Though I suppose Roadmaster has done the design work, the new "twist lock" brackets also don't look nearly as durable as the old ones, which simply used a hitch pin to secure the bracket to the piece attached to the frame extension. A MUCH harder install, and a less obviously robust attachment system than the previous design leaves me wondering where the improvement is in the new design. I already owned a Roadmaster tow bar (and like it), so I didn't have much choice. I've towed my new 2016 Jeep with the new bracket, and got back with the Jeep still securely attached to the tow vehicle, so it DOES work. 259161

It arrived in a timely manner was easy to install. My son and I did it in about 2 hours. Perfect fit the plug mounting studs were slightly bent during shipment but easily straightened. The wiring harness took much longer to install but I’m kind of pickie. I was able to feed inside the frame from front to back. Thanks for a great looking product. 476994

The Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit part # RM-521440-5 will work just fine with the adaptive cruise control (ACC) feature on your 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit as the brackets don't interfere with the sensor locations. There were issues with previous versions of the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit on models with the adaptive cruise control (ACC) feature but that is no longer an issue.

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee
For an EZ5 base plate kit confirmed as a fit for your 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee the correct kit you'd want is the part # RM-521440-5 which I attached an install video for as well. In addition to the base plates, you will also need a compatible tow bar, safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking to flat tow your vehicle. The most popular compatible tow bar is the Falcon 2, # RM-520. For safety cables you can use # RM-643. The coiled design helps keep the cables off of the ground. For...

  • Differences Between EZ4 and EZ5 Base Plate Kits for 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland
For your 2011 (or 2012) Jeep Grand Cherokee there are two base plate options. You have the EZ4 kit part # RM-521440-4 and the EZ5 part # RM-521440-5. There isn't a standard EZ kit that's a fit. The primary difference between the two designs is the way they attach to the tow bar. The EZ5 does not use the quick-connect crossbar which provides a cleaner look, but prevents you from using some accessories that mount to the crossbar such as a Rock Guard like the Roadmaster # RM-4000. If you...

  • Recommended Base Plate Kit and Other Parts to Flat Tow a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo
The Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plate Kit # RM-521440-5 is a fit for your 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee and will also work with your Falcon tow bar. You will not need the crossbar with this kit. If you don't already have them you'll also need safety cables, wiring, a braking system, and likely a high-low adapter to flat tow the Jeep. The safety cables I recommend at # RM-643. They're coiled which helps keep them off of the ground. To power the Jeep's lights I suggest the diode kit # RM-15267....

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2014-2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee
In order to flat tow your Jeep Grand Cherokee behind an RV you need a base plate kit, a tow bar, safety cables, a lighting solution, a supplemental braking system, and likely a high-low adapter. Starting with the base plates, I recommend the Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plate Kit # RM-521440-5. This kit is custom fit for your Grand Cherokee and features a hidden bracket design that provides a clean look when you aren't towing. Its black powder coat finish is durable and corrosion resistant. Then...

  • Can the Brake Buddy Classic Braking System Be Used On a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee
The Brake Buddy Classic 3 Portable Supplemental Braking System part # HM39494 we do offer and it's an excellent option for a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It comes with everything you need to control the vehicle's brakes via the motorhome. There are however some other items you'll need which I have attached below. Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit part # RM-521440-5 Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar part # RM-520 RoadMaster 68" Single Hook, Coiled Safety Cables part # RM-643 Roadmaster...

  • Mounting Location for Stay and Play DUO Operating Unit
When I installed the Stay-IN-Play DUO # SM99251 in a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee I mounted the operating unit in the front of the engine bay on the core support. You can mount the operating unit anywhere that the wires and hoses can reach; it's just recommended that it mounts in the engine bay away from direct water exposure and extreme heat sources. After installing many flat tow set ups on different vehicles, the biggest piece of advice I can give you is to plan out your install. Take...

  • Roadmaster Base Plate Kit Recommendation 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee to Use Nighthawk Tow Bar
The base plate kit part # RM-521440-4 does not come with a crossbar as it's the tow bar that would include this component. Since you are wanting to use the Nighthawk tow bar part # RM-676 you'd instead want the direct connect base plate from Roadmaster that fits your vehicle part # RM-521440-5 which attaches directly to the Nighthawk. I attached an install video for the base plate kit on a similar 2019 Grand Cherokee as well.

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Compatible with Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar
The base plates for your 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee that are compatible with the Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar # RM-520 are the Roadmaster EZ4 Base Plate Kit with Removable Arms # RM-521440-4 or the EZ5 Base Plate Kit with Removable Arms # RM-521440-5. I have attached an installation video of these for you. To have them installed, you will want to contact a local auto shop. Other components needed to flat tow your Grand Cherokee are towed vehicle wiring, a supplemental braking system, and...

  • Can Aries Bull Bar and Base Plates be Installed on 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Your 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee can have either the Aries Bull Bar # AAB35-1003 or base plates from Demco # DM9519291 or Roadmaster # RM-521440-5 but not both at the same time because there would be interference both during installation and in practice. If you are looking to accessorize your '19 Grand Cherokee the Aries Bull Bar # AAB35-1003 is a great option with its multiple functions. Aside from just looking cool, the bar helps protect the front of your Jeep and can even be used as...

  • Recommended Base Plates and Accessories for Flat Towing 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Behind a Motorhome
It looks like you're on the right track with the Roadmaster # RM-521440-5. I also recommend the Roadmaster # RM-155 lighting kit, because it will remain completely independent of the vehicle's lighting circuits. Your BrakeMaster will work, but you'll need a seat adapter, part # RM-88287 and a # RM-751449 stoplight switch kit, which is compatible with vehicles with non-adjustable pedals only. Since your GC has a combined taillight system, you won't heed the # RM-88400 relay. You won't...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit with a Roadmaster Sterling Tow Bar
I'm not familiar with a Cherokee Summit so I think you mean you have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit. If I'm wrong about this let me know. But I'll give you parts for both. Both Roadmaster EZ4 # RM-521440-4 and EZ5 # RM-521440-5 base plate kits that fit the Grand Cherokee will work with the Sterling tow bar. The same with the Cherokee except use EZ4 # RM-521447-4 or EZ5 # RM-521447-5. For either Jeep the Sterling tow bar safety cables will not work with the EZ5 kits. If you need...
