Roadmaster Base Plates - RM-3176-1

The crossbar-style hidden brackets attach to your vehicle's frame to provide attachment points for your tow bar. The visible portions of the brackets can be removed when you are not towing.

Features:

  • Hidden bracket design - drawbars are easily removable via 2 pins
    • Improved aesthetics compared with standard brackets
  • Computer-cut, all-steel construction provides exceptional strength
  • Black powder coat finish is durable and corrosion resistant
  • Simple installation - no welding required
    • Custom base plates ensure a perfect fit for your vehicle
  • Compatible with Quick Disconnects and all Roadmaster tow bars
  • Instructions and mounting hardware included
  • Made in the USA

The square drawbars, or front arms, on the crossbar-style base plate kit are simple to mount and remove, easily securing with hitch pins. Once the drawbars have been removed, the remaining brackets are virtually invisible. On most automobiles, the brackets are mounted within the grille, where they remain not only unseen, but protected from scrapes and scuffs as well.

Video Transcript for Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit Installation - 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

inaudible 00:00:07 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab, we're going to install part number RN-3176-1. This is a Roadmaster XL base plate kit with removable arms. Be a quick overview of the base plates we're going to install. It will be right here where the tow hooks are. The tow hooks will be removed. Part of this process is to go ahead and remove the bumper.

This trim piece here, the fascia, and the grill. Let's get started. First two screws you're going to remove is this one and this one using a 7 millimeter socket. Driver's side done, let's go to the passenger side. Now, before we take our fascia off, we'll locate the clips underneath here. There should be about 6 of these guys, and when we take our fascia off, we need to pull down these clips to help remove it.

Let's go ahead and start removing this part of the fascia here, should be able to just pop it out, loosen it up. We'll do this on both sides, then we'll work the tabs loose in the center. Looks like in our case here, there wasn't much tension on the clips, except for over here. It might be a good idea to get an extra set of hands to pull down the clip while another set of hands pulls op on the fascia. Let's go ahead and put this off to the side somewhere safe.

Next, we need to remove four bolts from the bottom of the grill. Here's one of them, and there's three more going across. Now, our next part is to go ahead and remove this top cover here. There will be about twelve fasteners that we'll have to remove. Basically, a bunch of these plastic rivets. To remove them, we'll just go ahead and use a small screwdriver to pop up the centers.

Sometimes you could use it to pull the whole thing out. It also may be helpful to use a trim panel tool as well. Now there are four bolts for the grill that we have to remove. Here, here, here, and here. Looks like it grabbed the bottom of the grill, then pull up and back . You could release it. We'll go underneath the front of the vehicle, and we need to remove this bolt for a stabilizing bar right here. We'll use a 15 millimeter socket for this. There will be just one bolt on each side. One thing to notice is how this bar sits below this bracket, so remember that when you put the bumper back into place. While we're still underneath the truck, we'll go ahead and disconnect the wire harness. To give us some extra working room, we'll go ahead and loosen it from this bracket here, and then disconnect it here. To unlock it, pull back on this red tab, and you can pull it apart. Next, we'll go ahead and remove these two bolts here and here on each side of the truck. Then we should be able to take her bumper off from here. We're only going to loosen this bolt up, and not remove it because you definitely need an extra set of hands to help remove the bumper after this. Now, looking at our driver's side, we need to remove the bumper mounting plate by taking off these three screws. We'll use a 15 millimeter socket for this. Now we'll go ahead and remove our tow hooks. Go ahead and remove the foam insert, so you can see what's going on. Using an 18 millimeter socket and wrench, we'll go ahead and remove the tow hook. Now at this point we can go ahead and start working with the base plates. This will simply slide in right here. The edge of the frame will fit inside here. Now when we take a look on the inside, there's an existing hole. This 5/8ths bolt lock washer and plate will go through that hole underneath and into our base plate. With all our hard work, we'll be using Loctite red part number LT37420. We'll go as far as we can, finger-tight. We'll leave it alone for now. Now our next set of hardware we'll work with will be the five-inch long bolts and this plate. These bolts will go through here, and then out the other side. However, we have to make a couple modifications. First off, sometimes you'll run into a vehicle manufacturing tolerances, and these holes won't line up. We got that lucky, so we need to go ahead and just clean up this hole right here as we run our first bolt through, as well as this one. We'll do these one at a time, but what we're actually going to do is go from the outside of the frame, run a drill bit through. This will keep everything in alignment, and out the other side. Then we'll just install one bolt at a time. Now we're using a half-inch drill bit to clean this out. Let's go ahead and install our first bolt and plate. We'll go ahead and drill out our hole from this side now. inaudible 00:05:57 to go through this base plate here, and then out the other side. Let's go ahead and line up our plate and install our bolt. Take another one of these plates, put it on the other side, add a little Loctite, and then we'll install a lock washer and nut. Finger tight for now, let's go down here. For this location, we'll use our face plate as a template, and we'll drill through this reinforcement right here. We'll go ahead and mark over a half-inch bit, then go back to our pilot bit, then back up to our half-inch. Our hardware for this spot will be our short half-inch bolt that'll go through. Underneath we'll get this square block, half-inch block washer and nut, and some Loctite. Now we're finished with our base plate for the driver's side, basically we're going to go ahead and repeat these same steps over on the passenger side. Let's go ahead and temporarily install inaudible 00:07:44 points. Then we'll go ahead and double check the distance from center to center. Manufacturer calls out for twenty-eight and a half inches, and that's what we've got. Yo always want to double-check the instructions with your particular vehicle, in case there are changes. With all our hardware installed, and our distance checks out, we can go ahead and tighten down the bolts, and then torque the bolts down as specified in the instructions. Our base plates are fully installed, now we can go ahead and start reassembling our truck. We'll go ahead and start off with an upper-mounting plate, bumper, and then the fascia. Let's get back underneath the truck, and then re-install our fasteners here. Our base plate is fully installed. Let's go ahead and put the receiver arms into place. Slide it in. This tab and this tab will match up. There's a pin that will go through, and a clip on the other side. Same thing on the driver's side. Now finish it for our install of the Roadmaster XL base plate kit, part number RM-3176-1, on our 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab. .

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

I just got done with the installation. Overall it was fairly straightforward, however it would have been nice if they had included pictures in the instructions. The larger bolts in the kit could have a more beveled tip like the factory bolts. This would make it much easier to get the bolts started in the holes. The photo attached is of the factory bolt for reference. Shipping was very quick, only took a few days. Price seems pretty high for these base plates. I purchased them for $360 and was even able to find a 5% off coupon online by using google. 658076

I purchased these for my new toad . I had purchased the entire towing system for my toad through etrailer I totaled my toad Sept 2018. I had to replace the 199-5 unit that bolts up to the frame of my new toad. This was the second time dealing with etrailer. Fast frendly quick service. Quality products and the sales representatives are extremely knowledgeable of all the products that they offer for your needs. I would rate etrailer Service, Sales dept and shipping dept A++. If you DEMAND Quality products and a sales representative that is extremely knowledge of all your needs. You can't go wrong with etrailer. Best Regards Ray 639676

I purchased the Roadmaster Base Plate for our 06 Saturn Vue. The base plate fit exactly as described. Was not to hard to install. I did my self to save money. The hardest part of the job was the removal of the front air dam and cutting out the access holes for the bars, Still not to bad if you have mechanical skills. The staff at e-trailer was very helpful and answered any questions that I had. It was delivered very quickly as stated and arrived on time. If you are considering this type of project I would highly recommend e-trailer. 262472

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

I have mounted four different Roadmaster brackets in the passed but this model had some serious problems. The drivers side bracket attached to my 2001 Jeep TJ very easily per the instructions. The passenger side bracket on the other hand had serious engineering deficiencies. None of the mounting holes matched up to the vehicle frame. Two of the bracket holes needed to be enlarged to engage. The back hole was very difficult aligning the inside required drilled hole with the outside slotted opening. Near impossible to enlarge a slotted frame opening. May be fine for a fully equipped shop with all the tools required but not so much for the home mechanic. I'd still recommend these brackets but know what your getting into. 452768

Would have been 5 stars except for price - yikes! But it appears to be plenty sturdy. Removing the old bolts was by far the hardest part of the installation. I can't blame the new part for that. As can be seen in the pictures the pasenger side bumper trim piece interferes a bit with the plate. I believe I can trim the facia for a better fit. Also note the slotted opening on the passenger side. It installs easily, but when the tow bar plate is installed, this needs to be loosened and pursuaded into a better position. I appreciate etrailer's help in getting the right part. 192683

Good information and prompt shipping. Base plate is solid and install and use instructions are excellent. Be warned that product install is drill two holes and install 3 bolts, BUT the entire front panel has to be removed and replaced. Not difficult, but time-consuming. Seat bracket is solid and install and use instructions are excellent. Brakemaster kit is good quality, but instructions are not as good as most Roadmaster products. Instructions for air line install are especially weak. 167660

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

I needed to set up our 1998 Toyota RAV4 for dinghy towing. Etrailer.com had everything I needed. The Roadmaster 1142-3 base plates fit as designed and were fairly easy to install, the only body modification needed was trimming the splash pans around the engine for the ends of the mounts. I had to point them out to my wife after installation, they are very discreet when not in use. The Roadmaster 910021-00 QD towbar assembly will make connecting to our RV a breeze, and the RM-98100 second vehicle kit had all the connectors and tubing to install my Brakemaster and BrakeAway cylinders. The long leads on the HM20014 breakaway switch meant I needed fewer wire connectors, and the FA80-01-2160 coiled cable will provide a more finished look when not towing the Toy. I decided to not complicate my life any more than necessary, and selected the EZT20B tow light kit instead of a magnetic kit due to the convertible top on our RAV4. The customer service people at etrailer.com were quick to answer my questions about wiring options, kept me informed when I had a delay, and the shipping/delivery times were unbelievable. Here in Wisconsin I received my orders in TWO DAYS! 233399

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

I used to tow our dinghy, a cherry 1997 Miata, with a car dolly; finally realized it was a case of overkill. The dolly is over half the weight of the car and wider than the motor home! On our last expedition to the Canadian Rockies, I got to talking with a fellow camper who told me how cool and easy it was to tow his dinghy with tow bars. Now, for the tow bar conversion: Removing the Miata's fascia, radiator air scoop and bottom engine cover is not difficult, as the fasteners are relatively easy to get to. After removing (and discarding) the two tie-down loops and discarding the four screws holding the front anti-sway bar, the installation of the base plates is straight-forward (it fits into those holes - who knew?). The fit of the kit to the car's frame is precise, with plenty of adjustment space, if needed. The only fabrication required is removal of some material from the air scoop where it comes into contact with the installed base plates. Reinstalling the fascia, I "shoe-horned" it over the base plate, with the help of silicon spray. Fortunately, the fascia is very flexible. Unless you look for them, the base plate receivers are not a prominent feature of the front end. 239008

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

First off it wasn't a "5 minute job". Took me probably 3.5 hours or so on my back in the garage, but I took my time especially with the cutting/trimming of the lower valance on the front bumper. I did not want to cut too much & have big gaping holes in the bumper. All in all it went well. To cut & trim the bumper I simply used a bare hack saw blade, Dremel tool, file & razor knife The picture in the instructions of where to cut a hole at the back of the fog light recess is a little puzzling until you get the light out & locate the tie-down bracket bolt that needs to be removed. You'll need to make the hole larger because the replacement bolt has a 17mm head on it instead of the stock 14mm hex head. Wasn't real happy about how much they had me hack off the panel under the engine. Probably should have looked that on my own rather than use their crudely drawn lines in the picture. I was able to drill the 1/2" hole for the 5 1/2" long rear bolt with a regular length drill bit. Just drill as straight as you can using the little square hole in the frame rail as your guide. It seemed to take forever to get to the required torque of 56 '/lbs on the long bolts. I suspect that's because the frame rail actually crushes a little bit. I want to point out 1 drawback to the brackets that I noticed. If you're using a tow bar that has a cross plate between the 2 bracket bar inserts (like I am), you can not pull the removable inserts out with the cross bracket attached. They're NOT parallel to one another, so when you're home & no longer in "tow mode" you'll have to unbolt one side in order to remove the bars. Otherwise a well made product. Haven't actually towed the car yet though. 180908

I ordered these brackets to tow my Jeep Wrangler behind my motorhome. Having used this brand before I knew the quality I would get and was not disappointed. The original order had 2 left side brackets and no right side brackets so after a call to customer support the correct part was sent. They even gave me a follow-up call to make sure I was taken care of. Mistakes happen but how a company responds to those mistakes is what really matters. These are people you can count on. I installed this baseplate on my 2003 Honda CRV myself. It was a challenge for an inexperienced mechanic but successful in spite of that. Following the clear instructions, the unit fit well into the CRV chassis. Installing it myself has also given me confidence in towing that I may not have had by giving that task to someone else. I wired the CRV and RV 6 way and 7 way connectors including power to charge the CRV's battery while towing. After towing the car for several thousand miles, I am very satisfied with the base plate, tow bar, and installation. 679192

Although it has taken me several weeks to install on my Ford Escape XLT, it actually arrived very quickly.. If you have minimal skills like I do, you can still install this yourself. It took me about 6 hours. The only glitches I found in the directions was the location of the ambient temperature sensor and the need to cut down part of the air foil. Due to the location of the sensor, I did not need to do anything with it and it was not necessary to make any cuts. Neither caused me any distress. The biggest challenge was having to enlarge a couple of holes and " fish" bolts through them due to the lack of welded nuts as indicated in the directions. If you lack the tools and/or know how to do these jobs, it might be better to have someone install it for you. 673102

Comments

The placement of the front frame members and bumper dictate where the base plate assembly mounts, so there wasnt really any other good way to place the base plates. If they were placed above the front bumper, they would have been to high to reliably connect to a tow bar.

  • If your 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is the 2 wheel drive model then the vehicle cannot be towed with all four wheels down as this would likely cause damage to the vehicle's driveline components. The only way to flat tow a 2 wheel drive model is with a tow dolly. Unfortunately, we do not have a tow dolly that is compatible with your truck at this time. If you have a 4 wheel drive model then the vehicle can be flat towed with all four wheels down. In order to do this you will need a...

  • Base Plate Recommendation for 2016 Chevy Silverado 1500
  • In regards to the question about leaving the tow hooks on, the base plate brackets fit into the slots where the tow hooks are on your 2016 Chevy Silverado 1500 so they would need to be removed. The difference between the Roadmaster MX # RM-3176-3 and Roadmaster XL # RM-3176-1 is that the XL is compatible with quick disconnects and all Roadmaster tow bars while the MX will work only with the Roadmaster tow bars that slide into a trailer hitch and the EZ Hook safety cables included with Roadmaster's...

  • Recommended Base Plates To Flat Tow A 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Z71
  • For your 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Z71, I recommend the Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms, # RM-3176-1. This base plate kit will work seamlessly with the Roadmaster BlackHawk 2 All Terrain, Non-Binding Tow Bar - Motor Home Mount - 2" Hitch - 10K, # RM-422 you referenced. I recommend a hitch lock like the # 40107 to secure your tow bar to your RV. For safety cables, I recommend the Roadmaster 80" Coiled Safety Cables - Double Hook - 10,000 lbs - Qty 2, # RM-653. They...

  • Flat Towing a 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500 with 6.2L engine
  • As long as your 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has 4WD and A two-speed transfer case that has a neutral and four-wheel drive low setting it can be flat towed. From my research, Silverados with 2WD do need the drive shaft to be disconnected in order to flat tow with all 4 wheels on the ground. If you have a 4WD, All you have to do is shift the transfer case to neutral and disconnect the battery. You can use a quick battery disconnect part # RM-766 so you do not have to disconnect the battery...

  • Recommended Front Mounted Hitch Receiver for 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500
  • The Draw-Tite Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - 2" # 65064 is the confirmed fit for your 2017 Silverado 1500 and will work well for most applications including your cooler rack. There is not a customized receiver like you stated with two receivers on either side to support a cooler rack. There is not a manufacturer that makes a dual receiver like you are stating so my recommendation is to use this front mounted hitch with a cargo carrier. For your cargo carrier I recommend...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500
  • For flat towing your 2014 Chevy Silverado you would need to first start with a base plate kit. For that the Roadmaster kit part # RM-3176-1 has been confirmed as a fit and would work well. I attached an install video for you to check out as well. In addition to the base plates, you will also need a compatible tow bar, safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking to flat tow your vehicle. The most popular compatible tow bar is the Blackhawk part # RM-422 which has a 10k capacity....

  • Recommended RV Bike Rack And Base Plate Kit For 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
  • We do offer a dual hitch receiver adapter you can use for a bike rack and also for the tow bar on your RV. The adapter I recommend is the Roadmaster, part # RM-077-2. This adapter has two 2-inch receivers and has a gross towing weight capacity of 10,000-lbs. The adapter does have a tongue weight capacity of 400 lbs. You will need to use a bike rack that is designed to be able to be used behind an RV. The rack I recommend is the Swagman Original, part # S64152-2. This is a 3-bike carrier....

  • Flat Towing Base Plates for 2014 Chevy Silverado
  • For a 2014 Silverado, the exact base plate assembly you need will depend on whether your truck is a 1500, 2500 or 3500 series. For a 1500 series, you'd want to use the Roadmaster # RM-3176-1. For a 2500 or 3500 series w/ tow hooks, use # 3167-1. I'm not sure what you meant by 'ring assembly'. The base plates bolt to the front of the truck frame assembly, and consist of a receiver and a drawbar. The drawbars are removable, and are meant to attach to the tow bar quick disconnect, which...

These XL Series Base Plates feature hidden brackets that will attach to the truck frame to provide attachment points for your tow bar. • Recommended Base Plates for 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500
  • For your 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500 I recommend the Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit # RM-3176-1. I really like this particular kit because it features removable square drawbars that are held in place with a pin and clip. This allows for quick and easy removal of the drawbars that make the remaining brackets virtually invisible on the truck for a clean look when you aren't towing. I have attached an installation video on an older model Silverado 1500 that you can take a look at for reference. You...

  • Flat towing a vehicle is an investment for sure, so I'll give you some other options for components. It appears you are looking at flat towing a 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 Z71 based on the question/answer you asked this question from. Here are some more cost conscious options to consider that are still quality options that will work very well for you. • Front Mounted Hitch Recommendation for 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500
  • I am not quite sure what you are referring to by "regular 2 inch hitch mount" but the Roadmaster Crossbar-Style Base Plate Kit # RM-3176-1 that fits your 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500 is only compatible with tow bars. If you want to use accessories (admittedly I'm not familiar with what a "speed rail" is, despite my attempts to research it) on the front of your truck the best option by far is a front mounted trailer hitch. I highly recommend checking out the Draw-Tite Front Mount Trailer...

Typically a fully legal and safe flat towing setup also includes a lighting/wiring kit, safety cables and a supplemental braking system for the vehicle being towed. The linked article will explain...
