Video Transcript for Roadmaster EZ2 Base Plate Kit Installation - 2015 Ford C-Max

Speaker 1: Today on our 2015 Ford C-Max, we're going to be installing Roadmaster's EZ2 base plate. Part number 524432-1.This is what your base plate's going to look like when it's fully installed. As you can see here, most of it's going to be hidden behind your fascia. There's going to be a little bit sticking out. However, these portions here that connect to your tow bar are removable. Twist, and they slide out.

As you can see with both of them removed, you can barely see that the base plate's even installed. It's compatible with Roadmaster's quick disconnect and all of their tow bars. So this will allow you to use tow bars between your motor home, and your vehicle to pull it behind you.Your tow bar comes with a location to mount a six pull connector, which will allow you to install a braking system under your vehicle, so your vehicle will brake when you brake in your motor home, as well as your necessary lighting, so all of your signals from your motor home will be transferred back your vehicle and people will know what's going on behind you.Next to the tow bar hookup, you'll find a location to attach your safety chains. To get our C-Max flat tow setup behind our motor home, we use Roadmaster's EZ2 base plate kit. Roadmaster's Diode wiring kit, Roadmaster's Falcon 2 tow bars, SMIs, Stay and Play duo supplemental braking system and Roadmaster's 76-inch single hook safety chains.Well begin by removing our upper radiator cover. There's eight pins that will have to be removed and you can do this with a flat-plated screwdriver or a trim panel remover tool.Pop up the center tab and then you can release the whole pin.

You release all these pins the same way. Once all your pins are removed you can pull your grill forward and there will be some small tabs located on the backside. We'll have to release those to pop out the grill. This can be done by pushing up on the tab. You can use your flat-plated screwdriver again or your trim panel remover tool.

We'll pop that out of there.Pull up on each tab and pull them out. You can see the lift located at the bottom. A flat-plated screwdriver can help getting those released. We'll set this aside.Next, we'll need to release the clips located on our fascia and release it from our upper grill. Push in on the tab and pull out on the fascia.

Do that on both sides.Next we'll remove the two Torx bolts located on our fender well using a T-30 socket. The one push pin located here just above those. Then do the same thing on the other side. Remove the three plastic push pins located on each side of the vehicle underneath. We're now ready to remove the fascia. You'll want to reach back and just pull out on the fender until it releases working your way up and down on both sides. Then you'll want to release your other side as well.Underneath your headlight you'll also find two tabs holding your fascia on. If you can't get that to release by pushing down on the tab, you can take a small flat-plated screwdriver. Work it in there to just guide it out. Do that with both the tabs. Then just pull outward on your fascia making sure that it releases on both sides. Then you'll want to release the electrical connectors on each side of your fog lights. Then you can set your fascia aside. Release the wiring harness from the bottom or your shock absorption pad. Use a flat-plated screwdriver to remove all the clips located along the bottom side. Then set your harness off to the side. We'll now need to cut off the shock absorption pad. Starting from here, we'll work our way over and cut it off just like that on each side. We'll use a cutoff wheel to trim long the marks that we just made.Once you've made those trims along both sides, that piece will just drop right down, you can pull it off.Next we'll need to cut along here located on our driver's side, just below the panel we cut off and cut this ear off so we can access the necessary bolts. We're then going to remove the bolt located behind the panel we just cut with an 8-millimeter socket. Then we'll set that aside.Next we'll pull out on our horn slightly and remove the 10-millimeter head bolt located behind it. This will allow us to remove our horns out of the way temporarily. Then, to give yourself a little more room we're going to take the whole assembly off, remove the tab there, press in on the horn connector, pull it off. Now we can tuck that wiring back easily and set our horn aside. We're then going to use a half-inch drill bit to enlarge the existing holes in our sub-frame here. You'll repeat this with the same holes located on the other side as well.Next, we'll prepare our hardware to install our backing plate brackets. Put some red Loctite on it, slide on a lock washer, followed by a flat washer. We're then going to slide this through the bottom hole on our support brace. This brace here is our passenger side and we'll know this because these ears should be facing towards the outside of the vehicle. On the other side, we'll place on one of the small spacers. We're now ready to put this on the vehicle. We'll use one of the nutted backing plates without a handle. Slide it up into our sub-frame and take our assembly that we had just made and thread it into that nut plate. You just want to get it about hand tight for now to make it easier to install our upper hardware. We'll now need to get our spacer in place. To make this easier, we're going to slide it down between the brace that we just put on and our sub-frame. We're going to try and lower it down and put a bolt between it. Then use that bolt to line it up through the hole.Once you've got it lined up, go ahead and tighten down your lower bolt. This will smash that spacer in place making it easier to install the rest of your hardware. We'll then assemble our bolt, flat washer and lock washer again with the red Loctite on it. Take one of the nutted backing plates with the handle on it and go up behind working it upward and we'll install our hardware in there. Once you've got it started, you'll repeat the same process on the other side.Next, take your backing plates and we're going to bend it as necessary to where it will line up flush with our hole here. Once you've bent this one to where it's nice and flush, repeat the same process on the other side. We'll then prepare our hardware for our base plate upper mounts. Start with red Loctite and then place on a lock washer. We're now prepared to install our base plate. This can be easy if you have an extra set of hands to help you hold it in place. But if not, you can just take one of the bolts and that will help support this side while you line up your other side. Take the hardware you prepared, slide it through. Then once you get your bolt started on this side, we can go over and start our other side.Lastly, take you remaining hardware, put some Loctite on each of the bolts. Slide the bolts through your base plate and the sub-frame support brackets we installed earlier, slide on a lock washer on the other side and tighten down a nut on it. You'll repeat this for the remaining three holes. Now tighten and torque all of your hardware. The specifications in your instructions. All the hardware we'll torque using a 19-millimeter socket and wrench. We can now reinstall our horn. Plug the electrical connector back in, clip the wiring, tab back on and use the bolt with the 10-millimeter head and thread it back in.Tighten that back down and makes you're it's not contacting your support here. You'll want to cut off the excess handle nut wire that you have. You can use a pair of side cutters to do this and you wiggle it back and forth. It makes it easier to cut. We'll then run the wire back across that we had removed from our bumper support that we cut off. We'll just zip tie that to our base plate here. Now we need to trim our fascia, but before we do that we're going to need to take the air duct off. There's black tabs located at both the top and bottom to allow you to release this. If your having difficulties, you can use a small flat-plated screw driver. We can now set this aside so we won't be reinstalling it. We'll then trim along the yellow line that's marked out here. It will be the same on both sides. Additionally, you'll need to make sure this tab here is removed along with the piece that we're cutting out. Again, we're going to be using our cutting wheel to trim this out.Now that we've got these cut out, we can go ahead and line it up with the vehicle. Make sure that our base plate's going to poke through properly and then reinstall our fascia.Your fascia will just sit back on the way it come off. Now we are going to go ahead and leave ours off because we have several other flat tow components we're going to be installing including a braking system and Diode wiring. If you're going to be installing any other components, it is recommended that you leave the fascia off as you're likely need to reach wiring here in the front. That will make that installation easier. If you're just installing your base plate, you can go ahead and reverse the remover procedure to get your fascia back on.That completes our installation of Roadmaster's EZ2 base plate on our 2015 Ford C-Max.

I bought and installed base plate and wiring on a 2018 Ford C-Max hybrid car. The wiring was a little complicated due to the hybrid setup on the car, however, everything worked out well. I have done this on several other cars I have towed behind my motorhomes. All products and help from etrailer.com was excellent. The video presentation was very helpful. 679941

I received the Roadmaster base plate on Friday. On Saturday, my daughter and I had some nice bonding time to install it on the CMax together. We took our time following the video instructions step by step and got it done in about 4 hours including all the breaks, clean up and test drive. Really wasn't any problem at all. We were missing one lock washer but secured a replacement easily at the hardware store. Did have some difficulty getting the flat metal backing plate to square up with the hole on the driver's side. Some minor grinding on the side of the plate provided enough room for it to finally line it up with the bolt. I am very impressed with the engineering of the baseplate. Looking forward to receiving the other components so I can complete the job. 199081

After comparing Demco, RoadMaster, and Blue Ox base plate costs, mounting procedures, etc for my 2012 Fiat Sport, I decided to go with RoadMaster (Kit #522013-1A) for two main reasons: 1) I had the tow bar and mount adapters from another product that were the same specs as the RoadMaster tow bar and adapters to attach to the base plate, and 2) no drilling or other modifications required to mount the base plates. Blue Ox (Kit #BX2800) required I buy their tow bar and other unique configuration adapters PLUS drill two half-inch holes on either side where the base plate mounted AND hammering flat the tips on the corners of the bumper bracket the frame where the base plate mounted. Blue Ox did provide better details on the removal of the facia and bolt removal and torquing actions required for the Fiat. My biggest challenge was the removal of the facia without damaging the clips or other damage to it. Once it was off, the action of removing the bumper core from the end of the frame rails and bolting on the base plate was slick! I took a little over 4 hours to do this, but it was because I wanted to do it right, without damage, and have the confidence I could tow without issues. (Not sure how sequence will show, but labeled the pictures as "Before," "Removal," "Installation," "Finished," and "Ready to Tow.") 230093

Hate that every 3,000 miles towing have to re-torque bolts of base plate. Good product otherwise.

Thanks for the feedback Bill. You bring up a very good point, I am sure it is pain, but it is specified in the instructions.

Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ2 in Base Plates

This was the second base plate kit from etrailer that I have installed, the first being on our ‘03 Outback and this one on our new to us 2015 Subaru CrossTrek. As usual the response, shipping and delivery from etrailer was prompt and curious. They are my go to place for anything towing related. Installation of this kit went well with only a few issues, most of which were related to our vehicle not the kit. I knew the car had been hit lightly on the LF corner, but could find nothing of concern body or frame wise when I looked the car over before buying it. Turns out the front bumper reinforcement had been tweaked a tad which made lining the bolt holes up with the holes in the base plates a tad challenging. This made the small angle brackets that go inside the frame heads tough to line up, but in the end it all fit. I did find that it was unnecessary to pull the washer reservoir or the left headlight to access the nut and washer for the long 1/2” bolt. You can easily reach and see the place from underneath after pulling the plastic encapsulation panel. When drilling that 1/2” hole be sure to angle the drill bit UP a tad otherwise you may end up having to grind a flat on the side of the large, thick washer as you can see in my picture from underneath. I used shrink wrap over the nut and bolt since there’s a wiring harness right against it. The picture of the baseplate differs a bit from the pictures so I guess they made some changes. All in all a great kit! 612040

I installed it on a 2012 mini Cooper S. The video was of a slightly different model than mine, but was very helpful. One thing to note is that the model S has a turbo charger so it has two plastic air intakes in the lower bumper area. That was not mentioned in the instructions or the video. The fit of the towbar bracket was perfect! Very little of it shows from the outside. 474488

I rated this excellent based on all my previous orders with e-trailer, because they have been great over the years. Even when something goes wrong they always make it right in the end. My review of this product will wait until after the holidays because this is going to be a gift and I don't to re-box it. The item is very heavy and hopefully in good condition. There is a 4" to 6" gouge in the side of the box from shipping, but understandable given the weight. 166124

For a base plate kit you'd then want the Roadmaster EZ2 kit part # 524432-1 which is confirmed as a fit for your 2018 Ford C-Max. I attached an install video for this for you to check out as well. • Recommended Parts to Flat Tow a 2018 Ford C-Max Hybrid
  • There are a number of parts you're going to need in order to flat tow your 2018 Ford C-Max Hybrid, starting with compatible base plates. I recommend the Roadmaster EZ2 Base Plate Kit # 524432-1. For a tow bar I recommend going with the Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar # RM-520 because of how easy the tow bar is to connect to the base plates as well as its long arms, which make it easier to maneuver when towing; you will also need safety chains # RM-643. The most popular compatible tow bar is the Falcon 2, # RM-520. For safety cables you can use # RM-643. The coiled design helps keep the cables...
