Video Transcript for Roadmaster Base Plate Installation - 2015 GMC Acadia

Today on our 2015 GMC Acadia we'll be taking a look at and installing the Roadmaster EZ Base Plate Kit with Removable Arms. Part number 523149-1. This is what it will look like once it's fully installed. We'll take our tow brackets, slide them in with the tab down, and rotate them out, that way the angle goes to the outside of the vehicle with the two holes on top, just like so on the other side. The first thing that we're going to do on the installation of our new base plates is go ahead and open up the hood so we gain access to all the fascia and trim hardware. We're going to need to remove this plastic piece here all the way across as well as this whole front bumper section here and disconnect the fog lights once we get down there as well. We'll just come around. You're going to have one here and so on and so forth across, totaling eight push pin fasteners.

Use a flat blade screwdriver to pop open the top. Once you have the top, pry it up a little bit, take a trim panel removal tool, pop it up the rest of the way so you can get underneath it. If you don't have that trim panel removal tool you can just use a flat blade screwdriver for the whole process. We'll go ahead and show you how that works here. It's just as easy. You're going to have the eight push pin fasteners across the front and then there's going to be one on either side, kind of back in that back corner.

We'll go ahead and remove those too so a total of 10 now. We'll go ahead and remove the cover. You're going to have a couple of little fasteners on either side securing that weather stripping just like so. We'll set this off to the side for later installation. We're going to use a T20 torque bit to remove the screws securing the grill and assembly here to that core bracket and support. You're going to have four on this side and three on this side totaling seven.

We'll remove the two small screws on either side. Now, we're going to have four T20 torque bit screws to remove inside the fender well. Once we have the four removed on this side, we're going to repeat that same process on the passenger side. We're going to go ahead and turn our tires to one side or other. Right now we're working on the driver's side so we'll turn them towards the passenger's side so we can have access behind the plastic fascia here on our fender well. You're going to notice there's going to be another screw here that we're going to need to remove, which is going to be the same as one of those two from the top as well as this will be a perfect access to disconnect our fog light.

There's going to be two tabs on either side. We're going to pull out on them. You should be able to pull the fastener down just like so. We'll remove that one and then we'll move over to the passenger's side. Underneath the car we're going to have two more fasteners just like those T20 torque bits that we removed earlier, one located here and one located here. They're going to be on both sides. Now that fender is going to be free. The final step in the removal of our front bumper and fascia assembly is going to be to remove the two 10 mm screws, one on each side, located here directly in front of that front support. Now, we're ready to remove our bumper assembly. The first thing we're going to want to do is pull out on the inner fender well on the bumper until the tabs release. If you need to go ahead and get an extra set of hands to help you hold it up in place while you remove it. I'm going to go ahead and set our bumper and fascia off to the side for replacement later. Let's go ahead and remove the 15 mm lower bolts securing our cross member to our lower frame channel. On the driver's side here, you'll see the cross member, that bottom cross member, just go to those to bolt straight up above. Now, I will remove the little push pin fastener securing our little temperature and thermostat here at the front. We're going to have to trim our bottom splash panel next because it's going to be in the way of getting our bottom bracket on. This will go up and behind just like so with that back part going where those 15 mm bolts we're that we removed. How are we going to do this We're just going to cut a little notch out of it. You'll see the line here, we're just going to come straight back with that and then we're going to come straight over. We'll just follow that crease. We're going to remove this piece here on both sides. Go ahead and use some tin snips or a razor blade or whatever you have around to go ahead and cut that. We'll just use a razor blade to clean it up. Trying to get our bracket up into place here you're going to see that our preliminary trim was not quite enough so we'll need to take it back a little bit more right here on this back section to be able to get our bracket all the way up and back behind our bumper with that bottom bracket lying up below. Cut that back portion. Cut the side over here and remove this tab. Now, we'll go ahead and raise our driver's side bracket up into place. First, slide in the back part where those two 15 mm bolts came out of, slide in the side of the bumper, bring it up and over into place. You'll line up those back bolt holes and we'll take our medium sized bolts with a flat washer and lock washer and place them in. Go and start them off by hand. This is going to be a 17 mm socket. We'll raise that bracket up into place and then tighten those down. Now, we'll mark out our bumper to drill our hole through the top. We're going to need to come down 1" so I'll use a paint pen to make that. We'll come over 3 1/2". We're going to draw a parallel line across the top to line up our hole that way when we drill through the hollow core here, when we drill through one side to the other, we can keep our drill bits straight to go through the other side. We'll take a center punch to both sides. We'll go ahead and put a clamp over our bracket to hold it up and secure to our bottom side of our bumper that way we can ensure that it doesn't move and that the hole will be in the proper spot. I'll pre-drill out our hole before we go up to that 1/2" size. Now, we'll move up to our final size. We can go ahead and take our longer 17 mm bolt, flat washer, slide it through, place our lock washer and nut on the other side. We'll repeat that same process on the other side. Always remember to place on your red loctite as well to provide that thread locker. This way we ensure that it won't come loose and if it does it won't come off. Now that we got our bracket secured with the clamp we'll have to drill our 1/2" hole up through the bottom so it goes through both of the pieces of sheet metal and comes out in the hollow center. We'll take our 1/2" x 3" bolts, place our lock washer over the top, put a little red loctite on our threads, place it through and you're going to have this on the other side, which is going to be that locking block with that lock nut welded into it. Then, thread it through just like so. If you need to you can look through the hole here on the side to line up everything. Once you have it lined up go ahead and tighten that down. Now that we have that one bolt in there we'll go ahead and pull out the other two that we first put in so we can put some loctite on them and then secure them back down. We'll repeat this for the other side and the two on the passenger's side. Below our splash shield here we're going to have two bolts securing our oil cooler down below. We're going to remove those bolts so we can push our oil cooler up because we're going to need to drill out two 1/2" holes to put our bolt in for our lower bracket. Pull out on the oil cooler. We'll drill our 1/2" holes. I'll take our 2" bolt, put a little thread locker on there, press it through, put our backing plate on, lock washer and our nut. We'll go ahead and secure that into place. Repeat that same process on the driver's side. Now, go ahead and press up our oil bracket line so we can put on those 15 mm nuts again. We just want to make sure that it's not resting on top of the bracket so it doesn't get split. It will look about like so. Now, we'll go ahead and secure our ambient air sensor to the back side of our driver's side bracket bar and cut off the excess. Now, we'll go ahead and torque down all of our bolts that we placed in to manufacturer's specifications. We're going to have to trim our fascia and put it up into place. With that front bumper and fascia there's going to be a lower piece that we're going to need to trim and/or remove, which is going to be this plastic piece here on the bottom. We'll put it up into place so you can see what we're talking about. We'll go ahead and set it up here and get it all lined up. If you look down below here you're going to see that the brackets for your base plate are going to be coming through right there. In order to have that come through cleanly and be able to put our brackets on there we're going to have to cut out two whole sections. We're just going to remove this whole bottom plastic piece, the black piece here. We'll take our 1/2" plate washer, stick our 1/2" x 4" bolt through the hole and we'll get it lined up on the other side. Go ahead and place your red loctite on the threads on the back, place your flat washer, lock washer and your nut on the back. Then, we'll tighten and torque this to manufacturer's specifications and repeat the same process on the other side. All right, now with all of our brackets in place, torque down to manufacturer's specifications we're ready to put that fascia since we removed that bottom piece. Now, what we're going to do so, we're just going to tape up that little deflector on the bottom just so we can slide it in and then we will just remove that tape so it can drop back down into place. Let's go ahead and slide it up into place, lining it up underneath the headlights and up over the top. Go ahead and press it in around the front, if you can, to hold it in. We'll work it all the way around the driver's side and passenger's side. Go ahead and line up our holes and place our T20 torque screws back in place. Now, we'll go ahead and peel back the top up here and place in that screw that fastens the top piece. Now that we've got that screw in place we'll put in the T20 torque bits, the four that we removed here. We'll first attach our two screws on the sides, one on this side and one on the other side. Then, we'll do the seven torque bit fasteners securing the top end of the grill. Now that we have those seven reattached we'll go ahead and place the plastic cover back over the top. Go ahead and hook in your weather stripping first and then we'll fasten everything down. Now, with the cover back in over the top we're able to close down the hood and put our tow bar brackets in place. Now, we'll be able to put our safety chains and cables in place. Take your rings and bring them in from the back side, we'll rotate it down and in just like so. Place your cable on over the top and thread it back in. We'll do the same thing on this other side. When you don't have it in use simply rotate your cables underneath or pull them off and everything is tucked back underneath where it can't hardly be seen. That will do it for our review and installation of the Roadmaster Easy Base Plate Kit with Removable Arms. Part number 523149-1 on our 2015 GMC Acadia.

Buick

I don't remember if these were for installing on the Buick or the MG. If they were for the MG, I have used them a good many times and they are fine. If they are or the Buick, I have not used them yet. I just need to finish up the wiring and the aux brakes for it. 415358

Thanks for asking. I installed them without a problem with the intention of pulling the Buick behind the motor home till I realized the Buick was 1000 over the tow limit of the hitch on the motor home so wound up never using them. If I ever need to tow it, they are there.

Here is an example of a Manufacture (Roadmaster) protecting their dealers, even though we are installers we are required to purchase from distributers, It is much easier to purchase from a quality E Dealer with a easy and complete web page than to spend my time walking into a local RV store and be frustrated with incompetent help. Thank you etrailer..... Great, Great job!!! 399304

I called in the afternoon and the lady said it wood shipped that day which is normally not the case. But it was shipped that very day. The other thing I had called Road Master and they had gave me the part # for the rubber caps that goes on the end of the hitch which the order lady said wasn't right. She put me on hold and called Road Master and she came back and Road Master had gave me the number for the 1 1/4" instead of the 1 1/2" that I needed. Now that is what I call good service. I sorry I forgot her name but she deserves a Atta boy. Thanks again for the great service 201622

I recently ordered a flat tow base plate for a 2011 Honda Fit. I need to review that product too. It was a pain getting it mounted as the bracket didn't quiet fit as it was supposed to. But that is Roadmaster's fault and not yours. I will contact them to complain. Thanks for the followup! 538388

After checking and verifying with Kelsey what my 2006 Mazda Miata needed for tow plates, I ordered and in a very few days, it arrived at my doorstep. They also did a great job for my 2018 Jeep Cherokee, which I am towing behind my RV now. They have the most knowledgeable folks to help to get the correct parts and if you find a price lower, they will refund the difference. I can't think of any other Company that does that. This Company is my only go-to place for anything towing related. Here is a picture of my installed BlueOx base plates on my Jeep and will update as soon as I get the Miata installed, and get a picture of that also. 527318

I like the Roadmaster tow bars but I am 2 for 2 with fitment issues. The one bolt hole did not line up with the frame, after trying to adjust and take measurements for an hour, I had to grind about an eighth of an inch on the frame hole. This issue doubled the installation time. Had a similar issue with my Miata tow bar 7 years ago, but had to enlarge hole on tow bar. The etrailer video was excellent and this would have been a simple install if the tow bar fit. 571342

We found out that an 02 subaru impreza outback sport takes a different baseplate than an impreza outback. Shawn, at etrailer was very helpful, and I received the correct baseplate within days. I haven't used it yet, and plan on using it for a commercial application. I like the installation. There was some drilling. It looks like it's going to work good. Roadmaster is the only thing they use where I am going to work delivering trucks. 515504

It took 2 1/2 hrs start to finish. Watch the video they have on the site. Everything went together easy. Getting the bumper off is the hardest. Take your time and be gentle. I broke one clip but doesn't seem to hamper the fit of the bumper and it went back on easy and lined up. Great product 546273

Very good product at a great price. Instructions and video are for a 2013 terrain and things were a bit different on my 2015. When all screws and clips are removed the front piece cannot be just pulled forward. There is a rear facing clip and you have to pull to the side to remove from this piece. (pics attached)There was no PS cooler attached in front on mine. Remove washer bottle totally which consists of 2 nuts and 1 bolt otherwise you will never get back up plate for top brackets in. If you remove horns it also makes installing the top brackets much easier. 188383

Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ in Base Plates

I installed this base plate system on my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited this weekend. My Jeep had tow hooks which were basically removed and replaced by the base plates in the same location. No modifications to the grill were required and the base plates are no more noticable than the tow hooks were. Installation was straight forward. Roadmaster forwarded a PDF file of the excellent color instructions with my order confirmation. I was able to view the photographs on my ipad and zoom in where necessary to get more detail. Overall I would rate the Roadmaster product, instructions and customer service 5 star in every way. 78276

Did you have to do any drilling on your vehicle to mount this system?

-- comment by: John B - 09/19/2013

Yes, there will be some drilling involved in the installation. Check the instructions link on the product page for more information about the drilling that will be required. I believe it will just be four 1/2 inch holes.

The Roadmaster baseplate and Falcon tow bar are working great with our 2014 Grand Cherokee and Endeavor motorhome. We are in the middle of a 1500 mile trip and have had no problems with the equipment. I have decided that I need to purchase a braking system for the Jeep. Thinking about the Invisi Brake, primarily because it is made by Roadmaster and I had a great experience with your companys customer service when the 2014 Grand Cherokee baseplate kit was being developed. Thanks for the good work.

Thanks for the follow up, very happy to hear that you are pleased with your Roadmaster Base plates. If you are considering the Invisibrake # RM-8700
Roadmaster InvisiBrake Supplemental Braking System
$950.00
as a braking system this is a great choice. The installation is a long and involved process and if you are looking for a more simplified installation you might like another Roadmaster product such as the Even Brake # RM-9400
Roadmaster Even Brake Portable Supplemental Braking System - Proportional
$1,275.00
. This will serve the same purpose as the Invisibrake, but the portable unit will have to be removed after flat towing your Jeep where the Invisibrake is permanently installed in your tow Jeep.

Purchased the towing adapter for my GMC Terrain a few week ago, received it on time & boxed not damaged. Watched the videos’ about three time on how to do it myself and started one evening and finished it the next morning about three hours with Beer Breaks, LoL. All the parts fix perfectly, had no problems with any of the parts, Product is real sturdy and if you don’t know where to look at the bumper you will not see the hide away receiver brackets. Very nice product, do it yourself and save Up loading two photos if it will let me one is with hide away brackets installed and the other one you can see is my complete tow bar attached to the hide away brackets 200736

Have been using this tow adapter now for a while and everything works out fine, Easy to connect. I did purchase the Wiring harness from the tail lights to the front of the car instead of making it as I usually do and the connection to the RV from that connection and glad I did, the wiring harness also went easy and very fast.

I ordered the base plate for my 2010 Ram. It was shipped right away and it arrived on the fourth day. I have no complaints about ordering this product it was quick and efficient to deal with e-trailer. The base plate arrived and was as advertised except for the bolts with the fish wire to do the one side of the bracket. It said in the instructions to use them. It was not a big deal. I had to do a little grinding on the inner bumper to get it to fit which was a bit of a pain but that is not the fault of the product. This is the second Roadmaster base plate I have installed and would order another if I need one! 671692

Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ in Base Plates

The EZ base plate makes it quick and easy to attach the arms. The hard part is attaching the safety cable. It is a squeeze to get them connected due to the tight space. The front of the passenger side bracket is attached using 2 self threading bolts. Bottom bolt tightened up OK. Top bolt would not get tight, stripped. Ended up removing more stuff and tapped top hole for a 7/16 bolt that got tight. Spent about 8 hours. 499393

Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ in Base Plates

baseplate was installed on a 2014 Smart car. installation instructions were well written; however some of the pictures were a little dark. It was installed by my husband and his friend over a period of 2 days. The only special tool that was needed was a 1/2 inch carbide tipped drill to drill through the special hard alloy metal in the frame of the Smart car. It was paired up with a matching Roadmaster tow bar. The only other task was to have wiring run from the lights/taillights/stoplights to hook up the RV lights to the car-this was done by an outside source. At some point I would like to change the Smart car's rear lights to LEDs to sync better with the LEDs used in the RV. 494957

Comments

It is still working well with no issues. I have bought LEDs for the rear turn signals, but haven’t installed them yet.

Easy to install but putting the pieces of the plastic back on the Chevy was a little harder to do. But it works great and It get used a lot. I tow it behind a semi tractor for work and have not had any problems with it. 484259

  • For your 2016 GMC Acadia we have all the parts needed to flat tow it behind your motorhome. You would need to start with a base plate kit though. For that you would need the part # 523149-1 which is a confirmed fit. These kits aren't incredibly hard to install but they are a bit time consuming. I attached an install video for you to check out, but to find an installer in your area I would recommend you find a local mechanic in your area who is interested in taking on the project. It really...

  • Curb weight is what your 2017 GMC Acadia Limited weighs without people or baggage in it while the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is the max amount of weight that your Acadia can handle (which includes the curb weight). Since the Roadmaster Falcon 2 # RM-520 is rated for 6,000 lbs you have 1,344 lbs that you can put inside your Acadia before you have maxed out the tow bar. Naturally you will want avoid maxing out the weight so that your tow bar isn't straining. I recommend putting...

  • Weight carrying is the gross trailer weight capacity of the hitch. Weight distribution is a device used to better distribute the tongue weight from a trailer to all axles of the tow vehicle and trailer. It produces more stress in certain places on the trailer frame and tow vehicle. As such some vehicles/hitches are not rated for use with weight distribution. Dinghy towing means flat towing or towing a vehicle with all of its wheels on the ground. So basically your trailer hitch is rated...
