Roadmaster Base Plates - 483-1

The crossbar-style hidden brackets attach to your vehicle's frame to provide attachment points for your tow bar. The visible portions of the brackets can be removed when you are not towing.

Features:

  • Hidden bracket design - drawbars are easily removable via 2 pins
    • Improved aesthetics compared with standard brackets
  • Computer-cut, all-steel construction provides exceptional strength
  • Black powder coat finish is durable and corrosion resistant
  • Simple installation - no welding required
    • Custom base plates ensure a perfect fit for your vehicle
  • Compatible with Quick Disconnects and all Roadmaster tow bars
  • Instructions and mounting hardware included
  • Made in the USA

The square drawbars, or front arms, on the crossbar-style base plate kit are simple to mount and remove, easily securing with hitch pins. Once the drawbars have been removed, the remaining brackets are virtually invisible. On most automobiles, the brackets are mounted within the grille, where they remain not only unseen, but protected from scrapes and scuffs as well.

Video Transcript for Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit Installation - 2003 Ford Ranger

Speaker 1: Today on our 2003 Ford Ranger we're gonna take a look at, and also show you how to install, the Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit with Removable Arms, part number is: 483-1.This base plate is really gonna help simplify the installation process. It uses preexisting holes in most of the situations. On each side you are gonna have to drill one hole, but it's fairly easy to get to. So this is a good recommended base plate for you to do at home. It has a sturdy steel construction, of course, it's heavy-duty steel. Welded very well at each of the seams and everything.

It adds to superior strength. Then it also has the black powder-coat finish, which of course, is gonna add to the corrosion resistance and make sure that it keeps looking good for a long time to come. Now, it only takes a few seconds to disconnect your quick-links and also pull the pin to remove your arms, so there's not a lot of hassle or headache when it comes time to remove that. That way you have a nice clean look. Your arms are just gonna slide in, just like that. We've got our 5/8" diameter pin, it's gonna slide through.

Then we secure that over here with a clip. The safety cables come with a quick-link so you just slide those through. That'll be ready to connect to the safety cables from our RV, and our tow bar can bolt in here. See the little tabs that hang down These have a hole through them. You'll be able to use a lock in there if you'd like to be able to lock your arms to your vehicle so they don't disappear on you.

Now, if you're just taking your vehicle off of your coach temporarily, and you want to leave your arms and stuff on, we can use a zip tie to hold that cable up so it's not hanging down below our vehicle. To begin our installation, we've got this air duct, it runs right underneath the radiator. We're gonna be removing this. On each side we've got two 10mm screws to remove. We're gonna do that first. Do that on both sides.

Now you'll need a flat-blade screwdriver or a trim panel tool. There's a push fastener right between those two bolts. We got a bolt here and a bolt here. There's our fastener, so just pull down on that. Do that same thing on the other side, and we'll set this aside. Now we're gonna mark our fascia here and see where we need to trim it. We're on the driver's side here first. The spacers here are gonna fit underneath the frame. We're gonna bring that right in against the inside of our frame rail there, and that's gonna give us an idea of where we need to cut out our notches for the braces to fit up in the fascia a little bit here. We'll get those marked out on each side there, and we'll do the same thing for our passenger side. From each of those marks, we want to mark up about 2". This is gonna get our, kind of our reference for where we need to make our trim. Essentially, we're taking out about a 2" x 2" area. The fascias will all be a little bit different, so you might have to adjust accordingly. But this is gonna get us in the right position. Now we'll get these trimmed out. This is kind of a softer material, so really a razor knife is all you need. Just want to score it once, and then continue on that same one, and eventually you'll be through to the other side. Now we'll test-fit our plate, and essentially, we want this hole to line up with the oblong hole in the frame rail. So we'll lift that up in position there. Looks like it's gonna be a little bit shy, so we'll take out a little bit more material here. All right, looks like our bolt is gonna go through there fine. Now we just need to head over to the passenger side and we'll do the same thing. Now we need to grab one of our large side plates. We've got a 4-1/2" bolt to drop through there. We're gonna place it on one of our spacers. This point we're gonna put it through that same hole we used as a guide for our inside plates. It's a good idea to hit it with a little bit of Loctite now. Once it's in place we might not be able to get our tube up there. And you want to use red Loctite on all of the bolts. Now, this is gonna go through that oblong hole that's in the frame rail. It'll come out on the inside of the frame rail, then we're gonna slide on another one of our spacer plates, just like that. So, spacer against the frame rail on the outside, and on the inside. The bolt we passed through the frame is now gonna pass through the second hole from the top in our brace. Then we'll put on a lock washer and a hex nut. Now, we want to leave this loose for now so we can make our adjustments. Now we're gonna take our other bolts and we're gonna slide them through the outside brace, and through our main receiver brace. You got one in the bottom hole, we're gonna have one in the hole that's second up from the bottom. Each of these get a lock washer and a nut, and of course, red Loctite. Now, the last one's gonna be our upper bolt. That sit above our frame. Our bolt comes through the plate on the outside. It's gonna go through our spacer block, and then through our inner brace, so this needs to be positioned between the two, just like that but above the frame rail. See it's gonna come out right there, just above that first bolt we put in, and it also gets a lock washer and nut. Now we can head over to the passenger side and we're gonna repeat that exact same process. Now, you want to ensure at this point that your truck is sitting nice and level, so adjust it as necessary. Then we're gonna check the level on each of our arms there. We can adjust that as necessary. You can see, I'm using a couple of supports here to kind of help hold my position. And using a angle iron here, this helps me a little bit side to side. I can use that as my level point. All right, it looks like everything is sitting level there. Now we need to check the distance between our two arms. Now we need to measure from the center of the bolt holes on that arm, to the center of the bolt holes on this arm, and we need to ensure that we're within 1/2" of 28". We're at about 27-3/4", so we're good there. Once we've confirmed that, we'll start tightening down our bolts. We're gonna recheck that measurement a couple times. You want to ensure that we stay to that. Sometimes when you put your bolts in it'll shift and you'll have to readjust, so keep that in mind. Now it's time to go through and get everything torqued down to the specifications that are listed in the bottom of the first page of the instructions. Now we'll come to the back side of our large bracket, and you're gonna see two holes that go up to the frame rail here. You want to choose the hole that's gonna be closest to the center of the frame. So in our case, it's gonna be the higher one. Just gonna mark the center of that on each side. We'll start off with a smaller drill bit. That's gonna give us our pilot hole, and we'll work our way up to the 1/2" diameter we need. All right, now that our hole is drilled out, we're gonna place through a same length bolt we've been using. Once we have it through the frame rail, I'm gonna put this on the back side of it, and then add our lock washer and our hex nut to it. We'll get these snugged down and tightened down, and we'll have our base plate installed. All right, now we're gonna mock-up our lower cover here. We need to see what is gonna be required for us to trim off for this to fit back into position. Now, that's gonna bring us back about 3-1/4" from the little inset here. Every application could be a little bit different, so just kind of mark it out. We're gonna bring that pretty much down to this lip here. This material is about the same as what we had on our bumper, but since it's gonna be under the vehicle, we'll just use some snips here to kind of cut that out. Then we'll do the same thing on the other side here. We can test it, see if it fits in place. If not, we can take out a little bit more. Once we have that notch cut out, we're gonna take off this front edge here, about 1-1/4" from here back. We're gonna take it over to that flat spot right there. Where that evens out, we'll bring it back to a corner. And then the driver's side here, it looks like we need to take this edge off to where it's about square, to where it comes about straight down there. Now we'll put our bolts back in place. We're only gonna be using the rear two, we've eliminated the forward attachment points. And that's gonna complete our installation of the Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit with Removable Arms, part number: 483-1, on our 2003 Ford Ranger.

product looks very heavy duty, product should have better instructions with step by step including pictures. installation was easier when i took off front bumper (which wasn't in instructions) . i would have gave it an excellent review but instructions need improvement. also i called an installation location & they had ridiculous prices of $580-$640 for installation only. 68309

Product was very good and instructions were easy to follow. The price was right also. I also purchased the wiring kit to bypass the vehicle wiring system. Only problem was that once you drill the 1 Inch hole for the bulb holder unless your lens detach fro the back you have trouble getting the bulb in. 22678

I purchased the Roadmaster Base Plate for our 06 Saturn Vue. The base plate fit exactly as described. Was not to hard to install. I did my self to save money. The hardest part of the job was the removal of the front air dam and cutting out the access holes for the bars, Still not to bad if you have mechanical skills. The staff at e-trailer was very helpful and answered any questions that I had. It was delivered very quickly as stated and arrived on time. If you are considering this type of project I would highly recommend e-trailer. 262472

I have mounted four different Roadmaster brackets in the passed but this model had some serious problems. The drivers side bracket attached to my 2001 Jeep TJ very easily per the instructions. The passenger side bracket on the other hand had serious engineering deficiencies. None of the mounting holes matched up to the vehicle frame. Two of the bracket holes needed to be enlarged to engage. The back hole was very difficult aligning the inside required drilled hole with the outside slotted opening. Near impossible to enlarge a slotted frame opening. May be fine for a fully equipped shop with all the tools required but not so much for the home mechanic. I'd still recommend these brackets but know what your getting into. 452768

Good information and prompt shipping. Base plate is solid and install and use instructions are excellent. Be warned that product install is drill two holes and install 3 bolts, BUT the entire front panel has to be removed and replaced. Not difficult, but time-consuming. Seat bracket is solid and install and use instructions are excellent. Brakemaster kit is good quality, but instructions are not as good as most Roadmaster products. Instructions for air line install are especially weak. 167660

I needed to set up our 1998 Toyota RAV4 for dinghy towing. Etrailer.com had everything I needed. The Roadmaster 1142-3 base plates fit as designed and were fairly easy to install, the only body modification needed was trimming the splash pans around the engine for the ends of the mounts. I had to point them out to my wife after installation, they are very discreet when not in use. The Roadmaster 910021-00 QD towbar assembly will make connecting to our RV a breeze, and the RM-98100 second vehicle kit had all the connectors and tubing to install my Brakemaster and BrakeAway cylinders. The long leads on the HM20014 breakaway switch meant I needed fewer wire connectors, and the FA80-01-2160 coiled cable will provide a more finished look when not towing the Toy. I decided to not complicate my life any more than necessary, and selected the EZT20B tow light kit instead of a magnetic kit due to the convertible top on our RAV4. The customer service people at etrailer.com were quick to answer my questions about wiring options, kept me informed when I had a delay, and the shipping/delivery times were unbelievable. Here in Wisconsin I received my orders in TWO DAYS! 233399

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

I used to tow our dinghy, a cherry 1997 Miata, with a car dolly; finally realized it was a case of overkill. The dolly is over half the weight of the car and wider than the motor home! On our last expedition to the Canadian Rockies, I got to talking with a fellow camper who told me how cool and easy it was to tow his dinghy with tow bars. Now, for the tow bar conversion: Removing the Miata's fascia, radiator air scoop and bottom engine cover is not difficult, as the fasteners are relatively easy to get to. After removing (and discarding) the two tie-down loops and discarding the four screws holding the front anti-sway bar, the installation of the base plates is straight-forward (it fits into those holes - who knew?). The fit of the kit to the car's frame is precise, with plenty of adjustment space, if needed. The only fabrication required is removal of some material from the air scoop where it comes into contact with the installed base plates. Reinstalling the fascia, I "shoe-horned" it over the base plate, with the help of silicon spray. Fortunately, the fascia is very flexible. Unless you look for them, the base plate receivers are not a prominent feature of the front end. 239008

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

First off it wasn't a "5 minute job". Took me probably 3.5 hours or so on my back in the garage, but I took my time especially with the cutting/trimming of the lower valance on the front bumper. I did not want to cut too much & have big gaping holes in the bumper. All in all it went well. To cut & trim the bumper I simply used a bare hack saw blade, Dremel tool, file & razor knife The picture in the instructions of where to cut a hole at the back of the fog light recess is a little puzzling until you get the light out & locate the tie-down bracket bolt that needs to be removed. You'll need to make the hole larger because the replacement bolt has a 17mm head on it instead of the stock 14mm hex head. Wasn't real happy about how much they had me hack off the panel under the engine. Probably should have looked that on my own rather than use their crudely drawn lines in the picture. I was able to drill the 1/2" hole for the 5 1/2" long rear bolt with a regular length drill bit. Just drill as straight as you can using the little square hole in the frame rail as your guide. It seemed to take forever to get to the required torque of 56 '/lbs on the long bolts. I suspect that's because the frame rail actually crushes a little bit. I want to point out 1 drawback to the brackets that I noticed. If you're using a tow bar that has a cross plate between the 2 bracket bar inserts (like I am), you can not pull the removable inserts out with the cross bracket attached. They're NOT parallel to one another, so when you're home & no longer in "tow mode" you'll have to unbolt one side in order to remove the bars. Otherwise a well made product. Haven't actually towed the car yet though. 180908

Would have been 5 stars except for price - yikes! But it appears to be plenty sturdy. Removing the old bolts was by far the hardest part of the installation. I can't blame the new part for that. As can be seen in the pictures the pasenger side bumper trim piece interferes a bit with the plate. I believe I can trim the facia for a better fit. Also note the slotted opening on the passenger side. It installs easily, but when the tow bar plate is installed, this needs to be loosened and pursuaded into a better position. I appreciate etrailer's help in getting the right part. 192683

I just got done with the installation. Overall it was fairly straightforward, however it would have been nice if they had included pictures in the instructions. The larger bolts in the kit could have a more beveled tip like the factory bolts. This would make it much easier to get the bolts started in the holes. The photo attached is of the factory bolt for reference. Shipping was very quick, only took a few days. Price seems pretty high for these base plates. I purchased them for $360 and was even able to find a 5% off coupon online by using google. 658076

Item is not a good design, it hangs to low an hits curbs, speed bumps going up and down driveways. 656167

Comments

The placement of the front frame members and bumper dictate where the base plate assembly mounts, so there wasnt really any other good way to place the base plates. If they were placed above the front bumper, they would have been to high to reliably connect to a tow bar.

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

Base plate kit was fairly easy to install, all hardware was included and directions were clear! I would definitely buy another to install if ever needed. I do have a car lift making it easier, but would not be bad without, just a little harder on the knees! 647182

Review from a similar Roadmaster XL in Base Plates

40 yrs in the autobody trade helped .Plus all the tools I have. The hard part for the average person would be cutting the HSLA bumper reinforcement. I would put in your instructions to use a cutoff wheel as a saw blade won't cut it and heat is not to be used HSLA steel. 646438

Do you have a question about this Base Plate?

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2006 Ford Ranger Behind a Motor Home
  • If your 2006 Ford Ranger is an XL or XLT then use # 483-1 for base plates. Use # 477-1 if it's a Sport model or # 477-5 for the STX. All of these sets are compatible with the Blackhawk 2 tow bar # RM-422 The tow bar is rated for 10,000 pounds. You will also need safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking. For safety cables use # BX88196, rated for 7,500 pounds. For lighting you can use a simple magnetic light kit # MT70097. Most states now require a supplemental braking...

  • Recommended Base Plates for 2003 Ford Ranger with Roadmaster Tracker Tow Bar

  • Base Plates and Tow Bar Compatible with a 2003 Ford Ranger
  • We do have two possible options for a 2003 Ford Ranger. First are base plates # 483-1, which will fit the XL and XLT models. Second is # 477-1 which will fit the Edge model with a tow hook. The base plates for a 1997 Ford Ranger, # 435-3, will not fit on a 2003 Ford Ranger. If you need a tow bar, I recommend the RoadMaster Tracker Tow Bar, # RM-020. With this tow bar, to make the XL extensions removable, you would also need Roadmaster Tow Bar Quick Disconnect Kit, # RM-201.

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2000 Mazda B Series Truck
  • First you'd need the base plate kit part # 483-1 which is a confirmed fit for your 2000 Mazda B Series truck and attaches to the truck frame to provide the attachment point for the tow bar. In addition to the base plates, you will also need a compatible tow bar, safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking to flat tow your vehicle. The most popular compatible tow bar is the Falcon 2, # RM-520. For safety cables you can use # RM-643. The coiled design helps keep the cables off of...

  • Items Needed to Flat-Tow 1999 Ford Ranger
  • You will need a Tow Bar, if you do not have one already. I would recommend the Roadmaster Falcon 2, part # RM-520. The Falcon 2 is our best selling tow bar, due to its reasonable cost and features like the self centering lock and storage latch that allow the bar to be folded up against the RV when not being used. The Roadmaster Base Plate Kit you referenced, part # 483-1 is indeed the correct base plate kit for your Ranger. You will also need safety cables. I would recommend using...

  • Parts Needed To Flat-Tow 2001 Ford Ranger
  • In order to safely flat-tow your 2001 Ford Ranger you will need 5 items. You will need base plates, a tow bar, safety cables, lights for the towed vehicle and most states now require a supplemental braking system. If your Ranger is an Edge with the tow hook, I recommend part # 477-1. These base plates have drawbars that can be removed when not towing making the remaining hardware almost invisible. If your Ranger is an XL or XLT, then the base plates I recommend is part # 483-1....

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2003 Hyundai Elantra Behind a Motor Home
  • The Roadmaster base plates, # 483-1, are for the Ford Ranger and Mazda B-series pickup and will not fit your 2003 Hyundai Elantra. Also, the Falcon 2 is a tow bar, not base plates. It is # RM-520. The tow bar attaches the motor home to the vehicle. For your 2003 Hyundai Elantra the correct Roadmaster base plates are # 521612-1. And they can be used with the Falcon 2 tow bar, # RM-520. (Please note there are no base plate options for GT models without fog lights.) In addition to...

  • Will Base Plate Kit from 1996 Ford Ranger Fit a 2001 Ford Ranger
  • The base plate kit you purchased for your 1996 Ford Ranger is part # 435-3 which fits up through 1997. It looks like there was a generation change with the Ranger for the 1998 model year. So, unfortunately, the kit you have will not fit on your 2001. For your newer truck the Roadmaster kits we have are part # 483-1 for the XL and XLT or part # 477-1 for the Edge. Either kit works with whatever tow bar you were using to tow the 1996 truck because they have the same type of connections.

It can be used with a flat towing setup that fits your 2000 Ford Ranger, but it would not be all that you'd need or even really a part you'd have to buy as it comes with tow bars. For a base plate kit you'd want the part # 483-1 which is a confirmed fit. • Parts Needed to Tow a 1999 Mazda B3000 Extended Cab Behind a Motor Home
  • You will need to check your owners manual or with the Mazda dealer to see if your 1999 Mazda B3000 Ext Cab can be flat towed. Some vehicles must be equipped with a transmission lube pump, an axle disconnect, drive line disconnect or free-wheeling hubs before they can be towed. If the correct procedure is not followed, it will cause severe damage to the transmission. As you found, the base plate kit we have for your B2500 is part # 483-1. I assume the Reese Tow Bar you are wanting to use is part # 63180. I spoke to my contact at Blue Ox and in order to get the Rangefinder II to work with the Blue Ox base plate kit you will need to modify it unless it was made before 2000.
