Video Transcript for Roadmaster Base Plate Installation - 2010 Ford Fusion

Today on this 2010 Ford Fusion, we're going to install Part Number 4420-1 from Roadmaster. This is their Bracket Kit for their Excel Series. All right. First thing we are going to do is go ahead and open up the hood and get to the fasteners that we need to remove to take off the bumper fascia. We have to remove six plastic fasteners and four screws attaching the upper fascia to the core support. Next, we'll go to the fender wells and there will be three plastic fasteners in each side that we'll have to remove.Okay.

Next, we'll go ahead and go underneath the vehicle and there will be a variety of screws to uninstall. There will be about 13 of them. We'll go around the perimeter of the bumper fascia and there's two more closer to the engine. Next, we'll go ahead and pull the fender liner underneath the vehicle and get access to the fog lights. We have two connector to deal with.

A smaller grey connector has a small tab that we can push down to release it and the larger connector has two tabs in the side. We have to release one on each side and work it off. At this point, we can go ahead and start removing the bumper fascia. We'll start by the corner in the wheel well and pull out and then straigh away from the vehicle. in this case, the plastic cache is pretty tight where we'll use a small screw driver to help pop and loose.

Next, we'll go ahead and remove the shock absorption pad, that will be the black plastic material that's behind the bumper fascia. There are eight clips that we need to push down to release it from the bumper cord. Some vehicles will have have an oil cooler. They'll be a line that will run over to it. It will be pretty close to the location where our base play will install. Now, this vehicle does not have that cooler, but if there was there will be a plastic loom to cover up the line to help protect it.

All right. On our driver's side, there's a wire harness that we need to loosen up as well. There's a small plastic press fitting that we have to remove. Now, we're going to lose up this wire and push it out of the way to give us room for our installation. Now after our installation, we can go back and check to see if you have enough room for the bracket and you can install this plastic rivet if you need to. Next, we're going to remove two sub-frame nuts and washers underneath the vehicle. At this point, you'll definitely going to need a support to put underneath the subframe because we need to loosen these two nuts, the subframe will tilt down away from the vehicle if it's standing up even if the wheels are on the ground. Okay. Once the subframe is secure, we'll go ahead and remove the nuts. Next, we'll go ahead and put the base plate into position. We'll apply some lock tight, we'll place some rear mounts over the studs that we just removed the nuts from, then we'll go ahead and reinstall the flat washer and nuts. Now, we're just going to snug these bolts down for now. Now, we can go ahead and take, use a clamp to clamp the base plate to the bumper structure because the base plate will fit up against it. With the base plate's clamp into place, we'll go ahead and tighten down and then torque down as specified in the instructions. Now, we'll go ahead and use our base plate as a template. We're going to drill three holes in the bumper core. We'll start up by using a half inch drill bit when making a mark into the bumper core to find our center then we'll go ahead and draw the pile hole first. The material of the bumper structure is made out of is a hard material, so it's imperative that you have a very sharp bit to do this with, so it's a good idea that you start off a couple of pallet holes first, maybe a 1/4 inch bit, and then 3/8 and then follow it up with a 1/2 inch. As we drill our hole out, we're going to go ahead and install the hardware. This will help keep it from moving, while we drill the rest of our holes. We'll install the bolt, the lock washer, and then the block with a nut. We'll run the bolt and a lock washer together, run it through the base plate then through the bumper structure and at the top then we'll install the nut and block on top of the bumper structure. We're just going to snug this up for now until we have all our holes drilled out. Okay. With all our holes drilled out, we can go ahead and install the fasteners for good. We'll take them out one at a time, apply some lock type and then go ahead and torque them down as specified in the instructions. Now, we can go ahead and work the shock absorption pad. We'll hold it up against the bumper structure and see where it meets up with base plate. We'll make some marks on it, so we know where to cut it out around it to make sure it fits with the base plate. They'll be three spots on top and three spots on the bottom. We'll go ahead and use a rotary tool to make our cuts. once our cuts are made, we'll go ahead and put it into place and do the test fit. Make some room, a little bit extra, just make sure that the absorption pad snaps back into place. Next, we're going to do some trimming on the bumper fascia. All right. Now, it's a good idea to hold the bumper fascia into palce and see where the base plates will fit through the grill. We'll go ahead and mark it and then cut them out on both sides, and then we'll go ahead with a test fit with the bumper fascia to see if we need to do anymore trimming. Once we're satisfied with the fit, we can go ahead and take a bumper fascia and re-install it for good. Before we put it into place, we snap it on the sides by the fender well then we'll get underneath the vehicle and reinstall the wiring for our fog lights. Okay. At this point, we can go ahead and reinstall the fasteners that hold the bumper fascia in place. In reverse order, we'll start from the bottom and work the way up. All right. Now, we can go ahead and install our safety cables. There will be a quick link in one of the short cables. We take the quick link, open it up, slide it through the opening that's built-in to the base plate, and then thread on the short safety cable. Fill the screw to quick link back together, and that's it for the safety cables. Now with the bumper fascia installed, we can go ahead and show how the brackets will fit with the base plate. We'll slide it into place and then we will install the pin and clip. Now, it is going to be a tight fit to pin and clip. It's a good idea to take the pin and clip and put the handle in first and then rotate it, and then push it through the base plate in the bracket. Then we'll go ahead and line up and install the clip on the other side. All right. With that, that'll finish it for our install of Part Number 44201-1 from Roadmaster on our 2010 Ford Fusion.

Main Bracket did NOT fit real well. Had to bend mounting arms out to go onto core support bolts. Three upper mounting pads to bumper not in align. center pad touched bumper outer pads had an 1/8" gap. we made 1/8" spacer plates to fill gap. Bumper holes are hard to drill had to resharpen a couple times. I put this on a 2012 Ford Fusion Hybrid. Turn the key on, shift to neutral, turn key off. Towed with no issues. Remember the hybrid has a gear box as apposed to a automatic transmission.

Review from a similar XL in Base Plates

Base plate 1910 install on 1999 Landrover disco 2 the base plate arrived fast (as does everything I have ordered from etrailer). It was a bit bent on arrival but Becky sorted me out and offered to replace it but it was easy to bend back (with a 3lb hammer). The included instructions were great for removing the bumper but nor much else. Possibly because my Landy is a 1999 disco 2 and the pictures were of a 2002. I have included some pictures of stuff I wish I had known. Firstly I had to loose the recovery loop on the driver side as the base plate would not fit over it. The chassis frame has steel tubes inside the bolt holes so the amount of drilling is minimal (I ordered a drill bit that they suggested but in all honesty could have opened up the holes with a file easily). You need to oval out the aluminum crush cans before you replce them or the new bolts will not go through. The center mount bolt just needs the plastic mount for the center screw on the scoop cut out and there is a bog square hole on the top of the member (thats why you need to big square piece of steel on the top of the center bolt) Mine was obscured by the torsion bar so I ended up dropping it to drill out the hole and get the bolt in straight. It was easy to bolt up to the frame once everything was prepped and do yourself a favour and buy loctite red for the bolts - you don't want to be going in there again. The bumper template was a good start but I had to reshape mine a lot particularly as the hole on the baseplate ended up halfway through the bumper and I had to do a lot of enlargement at the bottom to attach the safety wires. The photos should make more sense of some of my description

Very rugged kit with excellent instructions. A DIYer with medium mechanical skills can install. Involved removing the front bumper which was not difficult. Value for the price is very good. As always, etrailer support was also very good.

These components are heavy duty. I have pulled my Jeep many thousands of miles over many road conditions. I am currently planning a coast to coast rv trip and will be towing my Jeep.

Review from a similar XL in Base Plates

Item arrived earlier than predicted after viewing a very complete tracking system. The information was very clear and precise. Good job! I am 75 years of age and installed the baseplate myself. Only a couple of minor issues. One pin would not insert. Welding blob in the way. Filed it smooth and problem solved. The video was excellent but was a bit different in that it showed a different method o rear bolt installation, however the instructions on paper showed the correct way. Reinstalling the front clip had presented some difficulty. I suggest really watching the inner fender position relative to the front clip before removal. All said all went well. The finished look is great, (see pictures). Great product!

Review from a similar XL in Base Plates

Bought a '95 Sidekick on Craigs years ago - told it had a RV tow system on it, but never saw it... Now retired and wanting to use the Kick as a toad, researching Roadmasters awesome document library, I quickly learned that this was the system that was installed prior to our purchase of the rig... Bought this and it was true 'Plug n play' as all of the holes were already there... Using a awseome Roadmaster tow bar system too! Can't endorse this company more than this!!!

Great product, shipping was FAST. Instructions were adequate, but minimum - this was not surprising, you have to know how to bend wrenches to install something like this yourself. I had a factory-installed tow hook on each side that had to be uninstalled, but once you remove the front bumper shroud it is easy to remove and all the bolts are easy to remove. Once the hook was out of the way, easy-peasy!

Works fantastic! Install was relatively easy, I made adapter plates for my Husky tow bar. Nice!

Review from a similar XL in Base Plates

Straight forward install of 131-8 on 1998 Yukon. But i did have to do two things they don’t mention. (1) I had to trim about 3/4” to enlarge the hook hole in the air dam and (2) because of a slight mismatch of the nutplate with the frame holes, I drilled the center bottom holes in the frame from 1/2” to 5/8”. That was enough for both sides and the fit was then very good with no slop.. The tow bracket pins seem very easy to remove (to steal the brackets) so I will replace with locking 5/8” hitch pins. Besides, they are ugly and oversized (too ling). All in all, went as expected. Other reviewers gave the heads up on the air dam trim and the hole mismatch. Also, not sure why the big clipped washer spacers are clipped; there was no interference on the 1998 Yukon. And i didn’t use the 1/2” clipped washers.

Review from a similar XL in Base Plates

Good information and prompt shipping. Base plate is solid and install and use instructions are excellent. Be warned that product install is drill two holes and install 3 bolts, BUT the entire front panel has to be removed and replaced. Not difficult, but time-consuming. Seat bracket is solid and install and use instructions are excellent. Brakemaster kit is good quality, but instructions are not as good as most Roadmaster products. Instructions for air line install are especially weak.

Comments
Great with no problems. Connect and disconnect very quick and easy. Thanks.

This base plate works great on the Honda I pull behind my coach. Installation instructions were clear and easy to follow and everything lined up as hoped for so it was a snap. etrailer shipped quickly too so my experience was so positive I have given the site to several others looking for similar type items. I will be using them for any future needs that come up.

Comments
The base plate performed really well and I was very happy with it but sold the car and bought a small truck to tow behind my coach. I still highly recommend etrailer for this type of products and continue to use them for my needs.

Review from a similar XL in Base Plates

These base plates work great on my tow vehicle. Easy install and lines up perfectly with my Roadmaster tow bar. So far the base plates have been used in our travels on several trips to Texas, South Dakota, Florida and Michigan. When not traveling the removable arms come off the tow vehicle and you can barely see the remaining parts that are bolted to the frame. I would highly recommend these.

Thank you All at etrailer. Once again you All have out done yourselves, which is big job. Due to the fact you always do a great job. Well there was one time, when an item was shipped from the manf. But even then you sent a reimbursement for a portion of the labor cost it took to make the hitch fit a Classic 1981 El Camino. Even in this difficult time of covid, your still doing your best.

I can't be more pleased with my purchase, I have owned in the past Blue Ox base plate and towing equipment, I prefer the Roadmaster equipment by far! I also purchased at the same time, the Roadmaster Stowmaster tow bar, I would never go back to what I used before this purchase!

Good quality! What I expect from Roadmaster! Works great. Would have liked a bit more instruction on where to use the shims. Can't really get a torque wrench to some of the bolts, but not really a big deal!

Comments
If you take a look at the diagram on the instructions, it will tell you where the shims are to go. This really needs to be torqued down to spec to be able to be covered under warranty.

Great product, installation took about 3 hours, instructions were good,go step by step.works well with the roadmaster falcon tow bar.

Comments
In the photo that shows the vehicle hitched to the motorhome, it looks like the towbar is fairly out of level. If the towbar is more than 3 inches +/- of level, its recommended that a high/low adapter be used as the towbar could bind. If you use the link Ive provided below, you can see the different high/low adapters we offer.

Review from a similar XL in Base Plates

I needed to set up our 1998 Toyota RAV4 for dinghy towing. Etrailer.com had everything I needed. The Roadmaster 1142-3 base plates fit as designed and were fairly easy to install, the only body modification needed was trimming the splash pans around the engine for the ends of the mounts. I had to point them out to my wife after installation, they are very discreet when not in use. The Roadmaster 910021-00 QD towbar assembly will make connecting to our RV a breeze, and the RM-98100 second vehicle kit had all the connectors and tubing to install my Brakemaster and BrakeAway cylinders. The long leads on the HM20014 breakaway switch meant I needed fewer wire connectors, and the FA80-01-2160 coiled cable will provide a more finished look when not towing the Toy. I decided to not complicate my life any more than necessary, and selected the EZT20B tow light kit instead of a magnetic kit due to the convertible top on our RAV4. The customer service people at etrailer.com were quick to answer my questions about wiring options, kept me informed when I had a delay, and the shipping/delivery times were unbelievable. Here in Wisconsin I received my orders in TWO DAYS!

Placed order with Rebecca after she answered several questions. Shipment was quick and follow on emails kept me informed of status of order. In fact, she called me to let me know that the order had shipped. Product was drop shipped to Labelle Auto for installation. As stated in product manufactures installation instructions the install was straight forward and took the full 3 hours. I have used (towed) my vehicle since the install and everything works great. Also installed the Roadmaster Diode wiring kit. Easy to do and works great. As an added benefit with this kit your front running lights will also be illuminated. Overall I am very satisfied with both the product and the customer service provided by Rebecca and Dana at etrailer.com.
