Video Transcript for Roadmaster Crossbar-Style Base Plate Kit Installation - 2016 Nissan Versa Note

Ryan: Hey, everybody. Ryan here at etrailer.com. Today, on our 2016 Nissan Versa, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Roadmaster Crossbar-Style Base Plate Kit with removable arms. Now, per the Nissan Versa note, you're going to need seven main components to be able to flat two it down the road. You're going to need a two bar, a base plate, safety cables, a diode wiring kit, a braking system, a battery charge line, and a brake light relay. Our base plate is going to give us a solid and reliable connection point. That way, we can hook our tow bar to our motorhome to our base plate and allow us to flat tow our vehicle down the road. One of the things I like about this base plate kit is that it's not going to be very visible.

It's actually going to be tucked back a little bit and not that noticeable when we're not using it. Base plate's going to work with all Roadmaster Quick Disconnects as well as tow bars. Now, if you have another style of tow bar, chances are pretty good there's an adapter available that will allow you to properly pair it with our base plate.Whenever we're ready to put our removable arms in, it's very simple. We'll make sure that this is on top. Push it into place and then turn it a quarter turn and this pin will actually go into a cut-out here in the base plate.

You just repeat that process over here on this side. On each side we're also going to have some safety chain loops and these are going to be open enough to allow us to easily connect and disconnect our safety cables. One of the things I really like is that our base plate, it's going to have a pre-installed electrical bracket, and that makes mounting your six-way plug nice and easy. Now, to get our base plate installed, we are going to have to remove the front fascia, so that can be a little involved. However, once our fascia is out of the way, the base plate is straightforward. There's going to be no drilling required or anything like that.

Speaking of which, let's go ahead and put it on together now. To begin our installation, we're going to need to remove five plastic fasteners here along the front edge of our fascia. All five of them are going to be here, here, here, here, and here, and they're all going to remove the same way. To get them out, you can use a trim panel tool or even a flat head screwdriver. You're going to pry underneath the head of the fastener.

Kind of work it out like so, and then it will just pop out. Now, here in our fender well we're going to have one screw. We're going to remove that with a T20 Torx bit. With that out of the way, we can kind of peel back our fascia and peel back our fender liner up until where our fascia meets the quarter panel. We're actually going to have a bolt here that we need to take out, and we're going to do that using a 10mm. Once we have this out, we'll go ahead and repeat that same process on the other side. When you're underneath the car, on each side we're going to have three T20 Torx bit screws we need to remove. Once again on each side, we're going to remove three more plastic fasteners. The ones that we're going to take off are going to actually be connected to this plastic splash shield. We're going to have one here, one here, and one here. Now, we're going to remove the remaining push pin fasteners along this edge of our splash shield. That way, we can pull our shield down, pull it out, and set it off to the side. We're actually going to have two nuts holding our splash shield on as well, here and here, so we'll take those off using a 13mm socket. Now, if you come to each side of our grill, we're going to have a little square opening that's going to be an access hole. What you're going to want to do is grab a small flat blade screwdriver and it can be kind of tricky to see. What you're going to do is you're going to feed that screwdriver in there and there's going to be a plastic tab. What you're going to need to do is line that flat head up with that tab and turn it and it will release this portion of the grill from our crossmember in the front here. Now, it's a little tricky to see, but just a couple of inches back behind our grill on each side of our logo here, we're going to have two more push pen fasteners, the same type that we removed earlier. They're going to be facing down like this on each side, so you're going to want to go ahead and get your flat head in there, get those popped up and removed. Now, we can remove our fascia. Now, we're going to start on each side here at the wheel well and break it loose until we get to about center of our headlight, and then we can work our way from the center. What we're going to do is grab behind our fascia. Just kind of gently work it away from the quarter panel to about here. Once we have it removed from the front of the car, you just want to gently tilt it back, make sure you don't have any electrical connectors, and then go ahead and set your fascia off to the side so it doesn't get damaged. In this area right here, that's where we actually pushed our flat head screwdriver through that access hole in the grill. A fastener is still on the grill, but I just like to point out where that area was. That's where that fastener went into here, and whenever we turned it, it actually lined up with this opening and allowed us to pull it out. Now, we can remove our plastic shock absorber pad here off our bumper beam. It's going to be held in place with a few push down tabs not only on the top side but the bottom, so what you're going to do is just use your finger to push those down. Kind of just pull it away from our bumper beam. We can just set it off to the side. Now, on the back side of our bumper beam, we're going to have three plastic push pin fasteners that we need to take off. We're going to have one right here on the passenger side holding this piece of plastic to our bumper beam, so I'm going to need to take that one off, and we're going to have two more closer to the center. We're also going to have one of those push in fasteners right down here in the center of our bumper beam and that's going to be help holding our plastic air dam in place. We'll have the same setup over hear closer to the driver's side. Now, we can take our bumper beam itself off. On the driver's side, we're going to take off three 13mm nuts.On the passenger side, we're going to take off four of those 13mm nuts. With all of our hardware removed, we can pull our bumper beam away and set it off to the side. Just to give you a better idea, here's where these push pin fasteners we're connected. This one here went to the bumper beam here. Here, went to there, and this one went into this hole. Now, on the driver side only, we're going to need to remove this piece of plastic. It's going to be held in place by three push pin fasteners. One here, one here, and then we're actually going to have one down here, and we'll get to the head of it on the inside of our wheel well.We just work this piece out and set it off to the side. On the passenger side, we're going to have to remove our washer bottle. That's going to be held in place by three 10mm bolts. We're going to have one down here, right here, and on the back side of the bottle in between the fender liner. Once we have those out, we're going to lift up on it. You just kind of let it hang in this position for now. We need to take out this push pin fastener that's holding this side ducting in place here on the passenger side. Let me just set this off to the side. Now, on each side, we're going to trim up our radiator air dams according to the diagram in the instructions. I'm just going to use some tin snips to do this, however, it is relatively thin plastic, so you could use a Dremel tool or even a sharp utility knife. Over here on the driver side, we're going to have our coolant bottle and we need to just lift it up out of the way for now, so we'll take off this 10mm bolt that's holding it down. Just kind of grab the bottle and just loosen it up. That way when we put our base plate on, if we have to we can kind of move this around to get access to our hardware. Now, we can take our main receiver brace and put it over those factory studs that was holding on our bumper beam, and what we're going to do for all of our studs on each side we're going to take one of the included flat washers and we're going to reuse our factory nuts for all of those. Now, before we put our nuts on, and something I want to point out for the remaining hardware that we're going to use to secure any of our base plate components, we're always going to use some Loctite on the threads. You just want to put a couple of drops on each one, then we can resecure our factory nuts. Now, for the time being, we're just going to get all of our hardware hand tight. Now, we can take our side brace over here on our passenger side, and how this is going to work is this portion of the tab is going to sit on our main brace here. These two holes will line up, and then this flat tab with the hole in it is going to line up with the hole in our frame, so work that back. For the time being, we're going to loosely install our hardware to hold it in place. We'll take our smaller bolts, drop it down through. Then, on the bottom side we're going to secure them using a split lock washer and a nut. Now, we're going to mount the rear tab on our side braces, and how this is going to work is we're going to take one of our longer bolts and we're going to just put this through the tab. One of our spacers, the round one, is actually going to rest in between the frame and our side plate tab. Here is what it looks like on the side of the bracket with our bolt and our round spacer in place, and here is where the bolt comes out of the other side of the frame. What we'll do is put on some Loctite. We're going to take a flat spacer block, put that on first, followed by a split lock washer and our nut. Get it hand tight. We're going to use this exact same setup and technique over on the other side. Now, with all of our hardware in place, we can go ahead and tighten it all down. Now, I'm going to use a torque wrench to tighten all of our hardware down to the specification found in the instructions. With our base plate completely torqued down, now would be a good time to install any other flat towing components if you have them, such as your wiring or breaking system, because with the front end removed, we'll have a lot more room to work. If not, at this point you would reinstall your fascia in the opposite order that you removed it.That will do it for our look at and our installation of the Roadmaster Crossbar-Style Base Plate Kit on our 2016 Nissan Versa.

Used on a 2016 Nissan Versa note (manual transmission). Solid and perfect after install. On the Versa the instructions that tell you to cut the lower grill of the car - but it fits perfectly between the grill bars with no cutting required. Install is not for the feint hearted, took me the better part of a day and a half. Well made great product. 476703

This is the adapter kit i needed for my 2019 Jeep Cherokee to flat tow it behind my Class A Motorhome. At the time I first ordered this kit the factory still had to finish the design process as we had purchased the Jeep when it came out in 2018. It took about 6 weeks for the factory to call me to say it was done and could be ordered. My RV mechanic installed it and it went very well according to him. I towed the Jeep this weekend and it worked flawlessly. It replaces the tow hooks on the front of the Jeep. Everything arrived very quickly and in perfect order from etrailer. 694234

I purchased this EZ4 base plate to work in conjunction with the Falcon2 tow bar. It fit perfectly on my Wrangler Unlimited, and is tucked mostly out of site when not used. The two baseplate arms bolted to the cross bar of the Falcon2 are easily removed and stored away when not in use. Installation because of the weight and tight fit to the Wrangler frame, was found to be much easier with two people. 554274

Installed it myself on a 2017 Ford Focus. Watched a few videos on how to pull front bumper and install mount. The hardest part was making the holes in the steel front bumper. I like the fact I can remove the outside mounts that the hitch mounts to. I’ve pulled the car about 5,000 miles behind the rv with no problems. 698216

2014 FIAT 500L Trekking. Shipping was pretty good... received product in 9 days. Kit includes removable arms. Good Instructions. We had never installed anything requiring body removal. Overall the installation took us 4 hrs. Someone familiar with bodywork could shave an hour or 2 off the job. We took some time carefully working the base plate around the AC tubing. Overall it was easier to install than I expected and looks great. 186478

Great product for my 2014 Wrangler. Good materials, solid attachment to vehicle, and looks good. The e trailer installation video was great for assisting installation. Made the install much quicker and easier. The most difficult procedure for me was disconnecting the wiring harness on the back of the bumper. An old tack puller (or tool of similar design) would have been great for leveraging the pins out of their holes. Cutting the air dam was a slow process to ensure I didn't cut too much. A paper template to mark where to cut the air dam would make this process much simpler. Again, I can't emphasize enough how great the installation video was for making the steps easier. 126011

Very Happy! The shipping was fast; 3 days, including Thanks Giving. I was able to instal the base plat myself, just following the installation video on their web site. I watched it a couple of times while I was waiting for delivery, and then followed it step by step during installation. I wouldn't have dared attempt it myself without the video. I also installed the Tail Light Wiring Kit with Bulbs-RM-155 using the same method. Everything went without a problem. I will be buying from eTrailer again. 588968

All was delivered and I have installed it. Only thing wrong with the RM-521448-4 Roadmaster Crossbar-Style base plate kit was that one of the 1-*1/2" x 3"threaded backing plate would not tighten down. Had to toss it and put in heavy duty washer and Nut and tighten it down. Otherwise great product and easy to install. 658514

I received the RM-521567-4 very quickly with free shipping. I watched the Base Plate Kit video several times before I started the install. I Drove my CR-V upon a set of ramps and started tearing the front end off. Actually it was easier than I thought after watching and listing to the video. The only hard part was drilling the 1/2 inch hole in the sub-frame of the car. I did not have to trim the vertical frame bolts off as shown in the video in my 2013 CR-V. It took me 5 hours to install the Kit on my Honda. I have installed the base plate kit on my 2 previous TOADS, but I think If you can use a few tools this is not a very difficult job. Watch the video for taking the fascia and grill off it's a little tricky, but it snaps right off and back on just like the video. Pay attention where the plastic trim clips go back in the front and fender well. This new version (-4) with the twist on and off base plates is better than the older version (-1) I had before. It is much easier to put on and off the car for towing. My CR-V is black so with the plates off you can barely see the receivers. Great product! 207980

This was my 4th install of a RM base plate. Armed with several variants of written and video instructions we carefully started disassembling a new truck... Like the others base plates, everything fit. I have a 2018 GMC Canyon Denali 4x4 and the instructions were for a Chevy Colorado/Canyon/ZR2 and were off a bit. The GMC Denali install seems to be closer to the Chevy ZR2. In a few cases the trim fasteners and locations differed but all in all, reasonably similiar. Some differences: I did not have to remove the air dam. The fascia was notched at the bottom. Criticism: The width of vertical receiver plate introduced a gap between the 45 degree bumper core end brace and the truck frame. I might weld or bolt a shim to compensate. 579349

The Base Plates are performing as expected, unfortunately chipping paint has plagued these Base Plates. This chipping paint has occurred along both of the leading edge of where the tow bar mounts. This has not been caused from abuse/misuse, it started happening soon after began using. Should not have happened so soon. 710582

I installed the trailer hitch first and it was quite simple, total time about 1 hour. Next I installed the EZ4 base plate kit on our 2017 GMC Terrain, a little bit more difficult, but the step by step video made the whole process much simpler, in fact, I kept my laptop in the garage while I was doing the installation and stopped/started as it did the work. I can't thank you enough for the video clips, they are a tremendous help. We will be leaving in a week or so, can't wait to try it out. 515670

well I finally put my tow bar base plate on. I'm 82 years old so I had my doubts as to weather I could do this so I checked out a location that could have one this job for me but they wanted a hundred and fifteen dollars an hour labor so I said to hell with that . I looked at the directions that you sent with the Base Plate and said to myself, I can do this. Well I did it. Your instructions were dead on and I had no problem at all, In fact I hade a little fun doing it. Thanks a lot It's going to be great. 486722

Doug, just purchased a 2014 Cadillac srx 4 looking for base plates which you have. Now I have a roadmaster falcon tow bar that I tow my jeep wrangler with, will I have to change anything besides the new base plates to tow the SRX ???
-- comment by: Henry R - 06/05/2014

I have checked with our contacts at Roadmaster and in addition to the EZ Base Plate kit that is confirmed as a fit for your 2014 Cadillac SRX, you will need a set of the Quick disconnect plates # RM-222
Roadmaster Tow Bar Quick Disconnects - Car Side Only
$43.95
to connect with your Falcon Tow Bar. These will mount to your Cadillac base plate and will connect to your Falcon Tow Bar crossbar. These quick disconnects will allow you to easily change from towing your Jeep to your Cadillac. In addition to your tow bar and base plates, please make sure that you have all the necessary components needed for a complete flat towing system for your Cadillac like: safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking. Depending on how you have things set up for your Jeep you maybe able to transfer all of these components to your Cadillac.

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2015 Nissan Versa Behind Motorhome
Yes, to flat tow your 2015 Nissan Versa behind a motorhome you can use Roadmaster Base Plates, # RM-52357-4A, which you reference, along with the Blue Ox Avail Tow Bar, part # BX7420. You will also need a RoadMaster Base Plate to Blue Ox and Demco Tow Bars Adapter # RM-033. Next you will need lights on the Versa. If you will not be towing it frequently then I recommend a magnetic kit like # C-ATL20A. If you will be towing it often I recommend kit # 154-792-118158. I have linked instructions...

For safety cables you can use # RM-643. The coiled design helps keep the cables off of the ground. For lighting you can use the diode kit, # RM-15267, and not have to worry about cutting into the taillight housing. This will splice into your taillight wiring to allow your tow vehicle to control the taillight assemblies...

If you have the automatic or CVT transmission then I recommend the Roadmaster Tow Dolly part # RM-2000-1. This dolly has self-steering wheels to improve maneuvering and electric...

For a Roadmaster Base Plate kit for your 2015 Nissan Versa you would want the Roadmaster Base Plate Kit part # RM-52357-4A.
