2016 Ford F-150 - Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms

Designed for use with motor-home-mounted tow bars, the direct-connect brackets are virtually invisible, easy to mount and remove, and they eliminate the need for a quick-disconnect crossbar on your tow bar. Installs on your Ford F-150's frame.

Features:

  • Direct-connect brackets provide attachment points for your motor-home-mounted tow bar
  • Streamlined design creates supremely clean look
    • No obtrusive quick-disconnect crossbar
    • Hidden brackets sit even farther back than standard brackets
  • Drawbars attach and remove quickly and easily
    • Arms click to lock in place in brackets
    • Built-in pull rings let you unlock arms so you can twist and remove them
  • Computer-cut, all-steel construction provides exceptional strength
  • Black powder coat finish is durable and corrosion resistant
  • Simple installation - no welding required
    • Custom base plates ensure a perfect fit for your vehicle
  • Compatible with Roadmaster motor-home-mounted tow bars only
  • Instructions and mounting hardware included
  • Made in the USA

Note: Roadmaster direct-connect base plates will only work with Roadmaster tow bars that slide into a trailer hitch, such as the Sterling, Blackhawk, Blackhawk 2, Falcon, or Falcon 2. These base plates will not work with tow bars that require a hitch ball.

The drawbars, or front arms, on this base plate kit are supremely easy to mount and remove. Just insert them into the brackets and twist to lock them in place. To remove each arm, simply tug the built-in pull pin to disengage the lock, twist the arm back and pull it out of the bracket. Once the drawbars have been removed, the remaining brackets are virtually invisible. On most automobiles, the brackets are mounted within the grille, where they remain not only unseen, but protected from scrapes and scuffs as well.

Video Transcript for Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plate Kit Installation - 2016 Ford F-150

Speaker 1: Today on our 2016 Ford F-150, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plate Kit with Removable Arms. Part number RM-524431-5. Here's what our EZ5 Base Plate looks like once we have it installed. Now, this is going to allow us to safely and securely flat tow our F-150 behind our motorhome going down the road. It does come with removable arms, which is going to be nice. When we're not flat towing, it's going to be hidden behind the bumper pretty well.

We're really not going to be able to see too much of it.Now, the design of the arm is actually going to eliminate the need for that quick disconnect that is common on a lot of base plates. On the outside of our base plate, on each side, we're going to have our safety chain connection points, so that way we can be safe and secure and stay within the law. Our base plate is going to have a steel construction with a nice black powder coat finish, so that you know it's going to be strong and durable and looking good for a long time. This is a custom design kit, so it is going to fit your truck perfectly. It does include all the hardware and instructions to get it in place.

Now that we've seen what it looks like, gone over some of the features, let's show you how to get it installed. To begin our installation, we're going to want to come to our tow hooks on the front of our truck. If we come to the very bottom, we're going to slightly pull down on the plastic and reach behind. You're going to want to push that rubber piece out on the bottom of the cover, just slowly reach behind the tow hook cover and start pushing that rubber seal out slightly. Then, you're going to want to grab either a pry bar or a flat blade screwdriver, and you're going to want to go underneath the tow hook cover itself. You're going to want to pry outwards to try to get it to pop out.Once you have some of it popped out like this, we can go ahead and pull on it and pull it forward and up, exposing the two bolts holding our tow hook in place.

I want to be using a 15 millimeter socket to remove those two bolts. We can go ahead and pull that tow hook out the backside, then we can pull the cover out as well. Just going to work the cover back and forth, because there is that rubber seal in there, and it should come out. Once you have these removed, if we look up into the frame where our two bolts are going in, we're going to have a threaded backing plate that's inside the frame. We're going to want to take a screwdriver and push it forward, so we can get it out the hole right here at the front of our frame. That silver piece right here, that's what was threaded into the bolts.

We're going to do our best to get a screwdriver, or whatever you have available, and you want to go up from the bottom. Just going to want to push it towards the front. It's going to be a little hard to see but, right here, you can see the opening in the frame. You can get your finger in there and grab it, and we're going to pull out that backing plate. Now, we're going to do the same thing on the other side. Now, if we look in that access hole where our tow hooks came out, we're going to see that there's a bolt attached to this brace right here. We're going to need to remove that bolt, and we're going to be using a 13 millimeter socket to pull that out. Now, this is going to be the support for our intercooler. We're going to go ahead and pull the other one out of the other side as well.If we come back, just right in front of where we pulled that bolt out, we're going to have a square hole in our frame. It's going to be our access hole to get our hardware in place. Now, we're going to take one of the handle nuts. We're going to be taking the smaller of the two in our kit, and we're going to feed it in. We're going to want to line it up with the front hole that we took our tow hook out of.If we take our handle nut and we come in at estimate on the outside of our frame, where the bend needs to be, you can go ahead and bend the handle and feed it in place, making it a little bit easier to line it up. It's still going to take a little bit of patience, but it should make it just a little bit easier to get everything lined up once we have the bend in the correct spot. Now, once you have your first one in place, we're going to repeat that for the rear hole as well and the other side. With the handle nuts in place, we're going to prepare our hardware. Now, we're going to take one long half inch bolt and one of the shorter half inch bolts. We're going to apply a small amount of red Loctite onto them. You just want to put a small amount on the threads, we're going to do this to all of our bolts. Now, we can go ahead and grab our main receiver. If you notice inaudible 00:05:11 going to have two holes, and these are going to line up where our tow hook bolts came out. Now, we're also going to have a two holed spacer that's going to go right in place. We're going to take our hardware, and each one of our bolts is going to take a half inch lock washer. We're going to be coming up through our main receiver brace from the bottom and through the spacer block and threading into those handle nuts. Now, if you need to, you might want to grab an extra set of hands, so they can hold the brace while you start threading the bolts in, so those handle nuts don't move around on you. You're going to want to make sure that ear or the tab is on the outside of the frame. We're going to feed it in and very carefully make sure that those handle nuts are still in place. We're going to loosely start one of them. The longer bolt's going to go in the front to the thicker section of our main brace. The shorter bolt is going to go to the back hole. The tab on the back of our main brace here is going to have a hole in it, and we're going to need to drill through one side of our frame and attach it to the frame. Now, I'm going to take a small drill bit and drill through, start with the pilot hole, then we're going to come back and finalize that hole with a half inch drill bit. Once you have your half inch hole drilled through the frame using that bracket as a template, you're going to want to do that on both sides.Through our main brace and through the frame, we're going to take some half inch bolts followed by some lock washers. Then, in-between our main brace and the frame, we're going to put this spacer, so everything's going to be going through all of that. Then, we're going to feed in our handle nuts, and I'll show you how we're going to do that. We're going to take that spacer, we're going to slide it into place. Then, take our bolt with the lock washer on it, going through the main brace, then through that spacer going into the frame like this. Then, we'll need to grab our handle nut. Now, you're going to want to bend those handles out of the way from our main brace. You're going to take the larger handle nut. You're going to want to make sure that the nut is facing towards the middle of our truck, and we're going to feed it in. We're going to do our best to line it up with that bolt that's coming through the frame. Then, once we have it lined up, we're going to thread it into place. Now, it may take a little bit of patience and a little bit of bending to get it in the right position.Once you have that bolt in place, I'm going to come back with a three quarter inch socket and I'm going to snug up all my hardware. I'm going to put the other one in on the other side, and then we'll snug up the rest of our hardware as well. With all of our hardware in place and snugged down, we're going to come back with a three quarter inch socket and a torque wrench. We're going to torque all our hardware to the specified amount in the instructions. Now, the handle nuts, you're going to want to grab a pair of sidecutters. You're going to want to go pretty high to the frame. You're just going to want to start bending it back and forth, and it'll come right off. We're going to repeat that for all the remaining handle nuts. We're going to take those bolts with the intercooler, and we're going to thread them back into place. Now, we're going to take our arms. We're going to notice that there's going to be a pin with a pull ring on it. We're going to put that right on top. We're going to push it in and turn it until it locks in place. Now, if you're adding wiring or a braking system to your flat tow setup, our kit is going to come with some brackets. We can simply just remove our license plate bracket here, drill a couple of holes into the metal part of the bumper, and secure the bracket to either side of our license plate. We're going to have a nice spot for our breakaway switch as well as our electrical connections. That'll finish up your look at the Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plate Kit with Removable Arms, part number RM-524431-5, on our 2016 F-150.

2016 Ford Explorer

Bad experience with Roadmaster this time around! I have used their product for 15 years on my Ford Explorer towing behind a 40 foot diesel pusher with no issues. Purchased this set for my 2016 F-150 Limited pickup on line from etrailer and the fit from Roadmaster was terrible!!! the passenger side slide in arm when locked in place with the receiver installed on the vehicle, made the horizontal female cocked to about 25 degrees up from a horizontal plane!!! this meant the arm from my $1200.00 Roadmaster tow arm would not hook up. I had to take to a weld shop to make repairs on the arm to set it in a horizontal position!!! Roadmaster would not believe this was possible to their product said they had only seen this happen once before? It happened before but now you don't believe ME? 647440

Product was very well built and was easily installed with two people. For my 2018 ford f150 I used the direct connect removable arms Rm- 524431-5 and added a cross bar for better stability. e-trailer sales the RM-524431-4 that has the cross bar for the same price. (My mistake and the truck towed better with a Cross bar) 619893

After pulling my pickup for the first time, the front bolt of the bracket sheared off. Had to go in a change the bolts to grade 8 bolts. So far everything has been working fine while pulling my pickup. 581689

These have worked well. They were a bit of a challenge to install, but that was more about the F150 than the brackets. 580024

Received yesterday, quality looks great; have installed one side. Instructions are fairly good but totally lacking on removal of the 2018 F150 bumper. Access to the bolts inside the frame on the 2018 is very good so used grade 8 nylock nuts instead of the included wire held nuts. Access to hold the full size hex nuts is very good so it was easier to hold the nuts while torquing. 578617

The base plates are working great. The only problem is that I dont get to use them enough. I towed about 3,000 miles since my purchase and have had no issues at all.

I installed this base plate on my 2016 Ford Focus Hatchback Titanium with the help of my friends auto lift. If you have a friend that has a lift it sure makes this job easier on the installer. Once installed it is barely visible while not towing. The two little tubes that stick out for towing are removed when not towing or installed for towing in about 15 seconds. Push in and turn 90 degrees to lock in for towing or reverse for not towing. Once these tubes are removed the front of the car looks normal if you werent looking for the receiver tube insert holes. 503823

The Roadmaster base plate I installed on my 2016 Ford Focus is still working perfectly as is my Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow bar. I also use the Falcon 2 Tow Bar for pulling my Jeep Unlimited 4 door.

Product was perfect fit and seems very solid in it's construction and the way it mounts. I am completely satisfied with the product as i bought both the bracket kit and a wiring kit. The base plate kit should for this Jeep Liberty 2004 should have included the 6 outer bumper fascia attaching clips because these will break just about every time you take off the front bumper. Also they should supply you with a small tube of Loctite since you will always need it. So for the big price, they should throw this stuff in there but that's just my opinion. All in all great product, great folks to deal with and I will shop here again 474328

Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ5 in Base Plates

Product arrived very quick. It is well made and came complete with all hardware and instructions. The only problem was that it has extra mounting plates for each side that doesn't show up on any of the videos. The instructions say if there isn't a hole on the outside of the frame on each side just to drill through from the inside to make the hole on the outside. There is barely enough room to get your hand in there let alone a drill. I lined up the lower holes on the mounting plate with the holes on the frame and marked the upper hole, drilled a pilot hole and checked the inside and adjusted accordingly then drilled the final hole. I like the fact that I can remove the tow arms so they are not shin busters. 518321

Although I haven't installed this item as yet, I want to comment on the service I received from the staff at etrailer. They were without a doubt, the most knowledgeable people I have ever dealt with, not only did they know this product, but they were well versed in its application, and how 2 different parts compared & what was unique to each one. They helped me make my decision, the part was ordered and shipped out the same day. That's the way to get customers coming back. And then on top of that the shipping was free. Wow ! Thank you etrailer, i'll be calling you again. 539793

Until I received the follow up e-mail from Carrieann at etrailer.com, I had completely forgotten about these Roadmaster EZ5 baseplates on my 2007 Jeep Liberty. That sums up my experience and satisfaction. Once installed, I just want it to work and not cause problems that I have to think about or solve. The RM EZ5 has been easy to use and trouble free. If I were to nit-pick, installation was beyond my capabilities, tools and patience, even with the great eTrailer video. I paid a local shop $200 to install them which included using the proper tool to cut a smooth hole in the bumper cover. With the arms removed, it's hardly noticeable on the Jeep. Attaching the arms is quick and easy and connecting the tow bar is painless compared to other systems I've used in the past. Yes, they're a tad pricey but they cost less than having the towed go "walk-about" while underway. 419984

Great experience, quick shipping, excellent video and instructional references to go along with the products. I did the installation of the product myself and without the text and instructional video's there is no way I would have been 100% successful. These are the extra value add things that make the difference when shopping with etrailer, I will be a return customer. The base plate is of high quality construction and fit perfectly on my 2016 Jeep Wrangler. I use this with the Falcon 2 tow bar for my 2016 Jeep Wrangler - 2014 Fleetwood Bounder motorhome combination. 339284

Absolutely great product. Installed as instructed without a problem primarily because of the video provided by etrailer on the website. Could not have done it as quickly and smoothly without that video. Roadmaster baseplate is very sturdy and does NOT require cutting the steel bumper mount flanged as the blue ox version does for my Jeep. Yet I can still use a blue ox tow bar with an inexpensive adapter on the ends. Very sturdy, quality setup. 345648

The parts arrived way sooner than expected (seems to be a hibit for e-trailer). Don't get me wrong that's excellent. As for the installation it went very smooth except for trying to lock the bolts in. place with the wire and red loctite took a bit of engineering and finding the right tool/screwdriver and a steel plate to keep the nut plate from spinning and got it to lock up tighten. Looks great and looks like part on the Jeep The taillight package was flawless and went in better than I expected... just enough cable between lights and to the front of the Jeep... 302066

Product arrived very fast. Packaged well. I installed it as per instructions . Watching a video was a great h Ed lp after reading the instructions. Everything installed as expected. Took about 3 hours. I did drop a nut a nd could not find it so had my buddy run to hardware store to buy a 1/2 " nut and lock washer. I did not have access To a lift, So running the car up on blocks 4"high helped access The underside of the cowling. It was a challenge to get my fat finger holding a nut and washer into 2 tight spots but that is what I expect doing this type of installation. 572466

The product was exactly what I ordered and fit as easily as etrailer's very informative video tutorial showed that it would. The product was delivered before the expected date. And I was able to easily track the shipment. The best part of the etrailer experience was the extremely helpful staff member, Katie. My card had a problem going thru and Katie was as helpful in clearing that up as she was in assisting with the actual order. I will absolutely recommend etrailer to everyone. 253106

This base plate was as described and relatively easy to install. I watched the installation video several times as I was concerned taking the bumper cover and grill off the CR-V. I also watched to installation video for the Blue Ox base plate as it was slightly different and showed taking the off as one piece instead of two. The process was a bit tricky and I did break one clip on the drivers side. Other than snapping my 1/2" drill bit while drilling the hole, the installation was relatively easy and as portrayed in the installation video. I also purchase two metric bolts as my vehicle had neither on the bottom of the bumper cover. 445763

Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ5 in Base Plates

Roadmaster tow car wiring lights and fuse by-pass, came fine, in original packages. The Roadmaster EZ5 base plate came, but looked like it had gone through a war. Scratched, rubbed and bent at the electrical plug bracket tubes. Some of the hardware washers/bolts loose form the paking bag (had holes in it - shop warn?), and the box (Original Roadmaster box), was so beat up and full of holes that I am greatfullness the loose washers/bolt did not fall out. This part had obviously spent a lot of time, being kicked around some shop, before being taped back up and being sent back to the store. Wear should not affect merchantability. Shipping was very speedy. However, all that being said, it is still a great bargain. Your videos (on web) and instructions are great. 168823

Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ5 in Base Plates

Product construction quality is very good, but it did not slip into place and I had to drill two holes in my stock 2010 Jeep's frame because the holes in the bracket were off by over two inches on both sides of the bracket. I called Roadmaster and they couldn't explain the holes not lining up with the stock frame holes or why it did not fit into place. Their suggestion to drive onto one end of the bracket and then pry on the other end to bend the bracket was not possible due to all the welded on bracket members. I ended up using the tire jack and a short board to apply pressure to widen the bracket the 1/8" needed to fit over my Jeeps frame. Had everything fit as advertised mounting would only take 1-2 hours with simple tools, as it was it took 5 hours with a trip into town to buy drill bits I didn't have in my motorhome's tool box. The bracket is well made and should work well, but taking on this project without a full shop available is risky and could lead you into a situation where your begging a commercial shop to mount your internet purchased bracket. 355229

Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ5 in Base Plates

My wife Carol and I are thrilled with our Roadmaster towbar mounting bracket which we purchase from etrailer.com. It installed very easily, and the video on your website that explained the process was very helpful and accurate in regards to how the process would go. It was great to see that your product mated up with factory holes in the frame! I should have mentioned, that the product as well as the shipping box it self, despite it's weight, arrived in perfect shape! Thanks for great service and a great product! It arrived in a timely manner was easy to install. My son and I did it in about 2 hours. Perfect fit the plug mounting studs were slightly bent during shipment but easily straightened. The wiring harness took much longer to install but I’m kind of pickie. I was able to feed inside the frame from front to back. Thanks for a great looking product. 476994

Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ5 in Base Plates

Installation could/should have been great but... Instructions that came with kit were great. The problem was the base plate. When I got ready to lift it into place I checked the alignment of the 2 uprights and found they were not parallel and the unit would not fit around the outside of the frame. Had to do some creative engineering and was able to bend the outside plates so they finally slipped up the outside frame but there was still a lot of friction so getting everything aligned and in place so that the holes could drilled correctly was a major hassle. 202305

Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ5 in Base Plates

From start to finish I probably had an hour thirty in this install. I tried multiple cutting tools for trimming the lower plastic panel. A good razor knife worked the best for me. After I loose fit the bar on my jeep, I took the plastic valance panel loose and let it hang on the tow bar. I was able to access the bottom bolts easier and use my screw driver to hold the inner flat nuts on the side ones easier as well. I had to clean the threads on the bottom flat plates which I wish I had seen before I started the assembly. All in all no biggie. My wiring bracket piping was bent in transit. I was able to bend them back in place and then up slightly to make it easier for me to plug in my motorhome harness. Great engineering. Simple process. I really like the way the tow bar sits under and slightly behind the front of the bumper. Clean set up. 229558

Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ5 in Base Plates

Hi, I purchased a Roadmaster 524438-5 EZ 5 base plate from you. The installation was straight forward except there was a nut welded onto the inside of the driver side frame rail. I couldn't chisel it off so I had to expand the lower and upper bolt holes to accommodate the slightly off kilter angle of the bracket. Hopefully the pictures I provided will show the situation. The end product is very nice looking. Much better than the previous bracket on my '05 PT Cruiser. 409933

Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ5 in Base Plates

I did this installation for my mother- and father-in-law. The base plate is VERY heavy duty. It is welded very well and painted adequately. Being shipped in a cardboard box with little packaging, it arrived with paint worn off the little electrical connector mount tubes and other places. The fit was good except for that the top portions of the mounting plates (each end where the base plate is bolted to the car frame), that are bent horizontal for the top-most bolts, are not bent completely to a 90-degree angle--I had to wail on them with a mini-sledge to bend them over enough to be able to get the top bolts into the weld nuts on the car frame. Also, the instructions are vague or lacking in a number of ways. The instructions called out fasteners as "Phillips screw," "10mm (head) bolt" and "plastic fastener." Since I needed to gather tools to take with me for the 12.5 mile trip to my in-laws' place, I had to guess what the "plastic fasteners" were. I found out that the "plastic fasteners" were push rivets-- they are easiest to remove using two straight-blade screwdrivers. And step 7 of the instructions sets up a person to ruin some very expensive parts. Step 7 says to pull hard and straight out to release the grill from the two yellow clips near the headlights (which was OK) and the four yellow clips along the bottom of the grill (which was not OK). Those four yellow clips at the bottom of the grill each have four little retainer legs that clip into all four edges of the holes into which they clip. Instructions for other manufacturers products explain how to carefully unfasten those clips so as not to break anything. But the Roadmaster instructions say to just pull real hard. I found that those four lower clips don't have to be released (the grill does not need to be removed from the fascia) in order to release the two yellow clips shown in Figure M of the instructions--the installer need only pull back on each end of the grill, while it is still fastened to the the fascia by the four lower yellow clips, to be able to insert a flat-blade screwdriver between parts and release those yellow clips--the whole fascia and grill lifts off the vehicle at that point. In between the instructions for pulling the grill off and releasing the two yellow clips in Figure M is an instruction saying to "pull out on corner of the fascia to remove it from the locking strip as indicated by the yellow lines in Figure L..." What is not said in the instructions is that below those yellow lines shown in Figure L are seams between the ends of the fascia and the front fenders. Those seams contain snap-and-hook features molded into the plastic parts which, if just yanked apart, will break (I know this because I broke them on one side). The snap-and-hook features can be released by carefully pulling the fascia away from the fender, to expose the features, and then using a straight blade screwdriver to push each of the three hooks out of their mating snaps--nothing gets broken (I know this because I did it successfully). Other then those things, the installation was pretty straight-forward. I don't know how well the product works because I only did the installation yesterday and my in-laws won't try using it until next week. 229996

Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ5 in Base Plates

Quality products, GREAT INSTRUCTIONS! The video on YouTube helped very much when installing the Road Master base plate on our 2013 Honda CR-V. Tips: The front fog lights can be disconnected much easier after the front bumber fascia is released and tilted forward... same when reinstalling. Also, the bottom clips on the front grill release very easy with the help of a small, curved push tool... I used a curved needle nose plier. Simply apply gentle pressure from the bottom of the opening, right below the clips, into the notches provided for this effort. 177426

Review from a similar Roadmaster EZ5 in Base Plates

First I'd like to provide a few comments on e-trailer. I'm a return customer, and will continue to be. The price was right, the delivery was really fast, and the kit arrived with all the parts, and in pristine condition. The big, heavy, part of this kit was well-packed, and even the little metal prongs on the front arrived undamaged. I took the time to watch the e-trailer installation video but it appears that the kit they used in the demo had some minor configuration differences from that delivered. That wasn't really an issue, since the directions in the kit were consistent with the configuration of my kit. But now, about the kit. I installed a previous version Roadmaster base plate kit on a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Sport. It took me about an hour. This "new, improved" version... about six hours, spread over two days. Some was my fault, some bad directions, and some just bad luck, but the design of the kit was not user-installation-friendly, or an improvement of any kind over the older design. First, the new kit has both brackets connected by a large, beefy, bar. Great, except trying to get everything to line up is now much harder since the flanges on the kit are barrrrely wide enough to slip over the frame extensions on the Jeep. If you're off even a hair, they bind and you can't line up the bolt holes. And, with the brackets all in one piece, BOTH sides have to be lined up simultaneously. Lining up the bolt holes by tapping alternate sides with a hammer (my solution) works, but it sure is tedious. Oh, and there is a metal tab on the back side of the bar, behind the wiring prongs (not sure why it's there, maybe it serves a purpose on some other vehicle installation?). This tab is located in an EXTREMELY inconvenient location as, in addition to the problems lining up the bolt holes in the tight-fitting flanges on the frame extensions, you have to slide this tab through a little slot that you cut in the air dam. I found it easiest to NOT attach ANY of the air dam fasteners until I had at least one bolt on each side started. I just hung the air dam on this tab, jacked the whole thing into place, fiddled and hammered until I got a couple bolt holes lined up, and THEN fastened the air dam back in place. So far, the installation was just irritating and tedious, but no worse than some other auto repair work one might undertake. Now comes the "bad directions" part. Roadmaster includes some nuts with little wires tacked on so you can hold the nut in place on the blind side of the frame while you run the bolts in to snug them up. I found it useful to run those bolts through the nuts BEFORE doing anything to clear out the paint on the nut threads so they'll start a little easier. The Roadmaster directions supplied with the kit are VERY SPECIFIC (Step 5), stating that the LOWER nut should be put in place first, and then the UPPER. Since the access is through an opening in the UNDERSIDE of the frame, putting the lower bolt in first blocks access to the upper bolt. I followed the instructions on the first side and that is EXACTLY what happened, causing a significant problem. Since my access to the upper bolt was blocked by the installed lower one, I had to twist and fiddle the upper nut into place. When I started to tighten, the little holder wire bent around the lower bolt, and then broke, before nut had not yet snugged down. If you should find yourself in this awkward position, the quickest and simplest solution is to remove the plastic cover from above the frame - right in front of the grill, where a winch would normally mount - and go in from the top with a wrench to grab that spinning nut. When I installed the bolts on the other side, I did the upper one first, and then the lower, and had no such problems. Once you get them snugged down, they'll pretty much hold themselves so you can torque to the proper spec, and you're done. All in all, this install was MANY times more difficult than the original Roadmaster TWO-PIECE base plate kit for the Jeep Wrangler. Additionally, I don't particularly like the new design anyway, beyond the more difficult install. The huge bar that connects the two brackets (that are independent on the older design) sticks down lower, and reduces clearance in the front a bit. The "EZ twist locks" on the brackets themselves ARE easy to install, though because of clearance with the bar in the kit I have, have to be installed upside down compared with the etrailer video demo. While easy to install, the new hitch point brackets offer no obvious positive visual cue that one can quickly look at when you're hitching up to confirm that they're locked. I guess I'll get used to that, but I don't like it. Though I suppose Roadmaster has done the design work, the new "twist lock" brackets also don't look nearly as durable as the old ones, which simply used a hitch pin to secure the bracket to the piece attached to the frame extension. A MUCH harder install, and a less obviously robust attachment system than the previous design leaves me wondering where the improvement is in the new design. I already owned a Roadmaster tow bar (and like it), so I didn't have much choice. I've towed my new 2016 Jeep with the new bracket, and got back with the Jeep still securely attached to the tow vehicle, so it DOES work. 259161
