2016 Ford F-150 - Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms

  • Roadmaster

Designed for use with motor-home-mounted tow bars, the direct-connect brackets are virtually invisible, easy to mount and remove, and they eliminate the need for a quick-disconnect crossbar on your tow bar. Installs on your Ford F-150's frame.

Features:

  • Direct-connect brackets provide attachment points for your motor-home-mounted tow bar
  • Streamlined design creates supremely clean look
    • No obtrusive quick-disconnect crossbar
    • Hidden brackets sit even farther back than standard brackets
  • Drawbars attach and remove quickly and easily
    • Arms click to lock in place in brackets
    • Built-in pull rings let you unlock arms so you can twist and remove them
  • Computer-cut, all-steel construction provides exceptional strength
  • Black powder coat finish is durable and corrosion resistant
  • Simple installation - no welding required
    • Custom base plates ensure a perfect fit for your vehicle
  • Compatible with Roadmaster motor-home-mounted tow bars only

  • Limited Lifetime Warranty

Note: Roadmaster direct-connect base plates will only work with Roadmaster tow bars that slide into a trailer hitch, such as the Sterling, Blackhawk, Blackhawk 2, Falcon, or Falcon 2. These base plates will not work with tow bars that require a hitch ball.

The drawbars, or front arms, on this base plate kit are supremely easy to mount and remove. Just insert them into the brackets and twist to lock them in place. To remove each arm, simply tug the built-in pull pin to disengage the lock, twist the arm back and pull it out of the bracket. Once the drawbars have been removed, the remaining brackets are virtually invisible. On most automobiles, the brackets are mounted within the grille, where they remain not only unseen, but protected from scrapes and scuffs as well.

Video Transcript for Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plate Kit Installation - 2016 Ford F-150

Speaker 1: Today on our 2016 Ford F-150, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plate Kit with Removable Arms. Part number RM-524431-5. Here's what our EZ5 Base Plate looks like once we have it installed. Now, this is going to allow us to safely and securely flat tow our F-150 behind our motorhome going down the road. It does come with removable arms, which is going to be nice. When we're not flat towing, it's going to be hidden behind the bumper pretty well.

We're really not going to be able to see too much of it.Now, the design of the arm is actually going to eliminate the need for that quick disconnect that is common on a lot of base plates. On the outside of our base plate, on each side, we're going to have our safety chain connection points, so that way we can be safe and secure and stay within the law. Our base plate is going to have a steel construction with a nice black powder coat finish, so that you know it's going to be strong and durable and looking good for a long time. This is a custom design kit, so it is going to fit your truck perfectly. It does include all the hardware and instructions to get it in place.

Now that we've seen what it looks like, gone over some of the features, let's show you how to get it installed. To begin our installation, we're going to want to come to our tow hooks on the front of our truck. If we come to the very bottom, we're going to slightly pull down on the plastic and reach behind. You're going to want to push that rubber piece out on the bottom of the cover, just slowly reach behind the tow hook cover and start pushing that rubber seal out slightly. Then, you're going to want to grab either a pry bar or a flat blade screwdriver, and you're going to want to go underneath the tow hook cover itself. You're going to want to pry outwards to try to get it to pop out.Once you have some of it popped out like this, we can go ahead and pull on it and pull it forward and up, exposing the two bolts holding our tow hook in place.

I want to be using a 15 millimeter socket to remove those two bolts. We can go ahead and pull that tow hook out the backside, then we can pull the cover out as well. Just going to work the cover back and forth, because there is that rubber seal in there, and it should come out. Once you have these removed, if we look up into the frame where our two bolts are going in, we're going to have a threaded backing plate that's inside the frame. We're going to want to take a screwdriver and push it forward, so we can get it out the hole right here at the front of our frame. That silver piece right here, that's what was threaded into the bolts.

We're going to do our best to get a screwdriver, or whatever you have available, and you want to go up from the bottom. Just going to want to push it towards the front. It's going to be a little hard to see but, right here, you can see the opening in the frame. You can get your finger in there and grab it, and we're going to pull out that backing plate. Now, we're going to do the same thing on the other side. Now, if we look in that access hole where our tow hooks came out, we're going to see that there's a bolt attached to this brace right here. We're going to need to remove that bolt, and we're going to be using a 13 millimeter socket to pull that out. Now, this is going to be the support for our intercooler. We're going to go ahead and pull the other one out of the other side as well.If we come back, just right in front of where we pulled that bolt out, we're going to have a square hole in our frame. It's going to be our access hole to get our hardware in place. Now, we're going to take one of the handle nuts. We're going to be taking the smaller of the two in our kit, and we're going to feed it in. We're going to want to line it up with the front hole that we took our tow hook out of.If we take our handle nut and we come in at estimate on the outside of our frame, where the bend needs to be, you can go ahead and bend the handle and feed it in place, making it a little bit easier to line it up. It's still going to take a little bit of patience, but it should make it just a little bit easier to get everything lined up once we have the bend in the correct spot. Now, once you have your first one in place, we're going to repeat that for the rear hole as well and the other side. With the handle nuts in place, we're going to prepare our hardware. Now, we're going to take one long half inch bolt and one of the shorter half inch bolts. We're going to apply a small amount of red Loctite onto them. You just want to put a small amount on the threads, we're going to do this to all of our bolts. Now, we can go ahead and grab our main receiver. If you notice inaudible 00:05:11 going to have two holes, and these are going to line up where our tow hook bolts came out. Now, we're also going to have a two holed spacer that's going to go right in place. We're going to take our hardware, and each one of our bolts is going to take a half inch lock washer. We're going to be coming up through our main receiver brace from the bottom and through the spacer block and threading into those handle nuts. Now, if you need to, you might want to grab an extra set of hands, so they can hold the brace while you start threading the bolts in, so those handle nuts don't move around on you. You're going to want to make sure that ear or the tab is on the outside of the frame. We're going to feed it in and very carefully make sure that those handle nuts are still in place. We're going to loosely start one of them. The longer bolt's going to go in the front to the thicker section of our main brace. The shorter bolt is going to go to the back hole. The tab on the back of our main brace here is going to have a hole in it, and we're going to need to drill through one side of our frame and attach it to the frame. Now, I'm going to take a small drill bit and drill through, start with the pilot hole, then we're going to come back and finalize that hole with a half inch drill bit. Once you have your half inch hole drilled through the frame using that bracket as a template, you're going to want to do that on both sides.Through our main brace and through the frame, we're going to take some half inch bolts followed by some lock washers. Then, in-between our main brace and the frame, we're going to put this spacer, so everything's going to be going through all of that. Then, we're going to feed in our handle nuts, and I'll show you how we're going to do that. We're going to take that spacer, we're going to slide it into place. Then, take our bolt with the lock washer on it, going through the main brace, then through that spacer going into the frame like this. Then, we'll need to grab our handle nut. Now, you're going to want to bend those handles out of the way from our main brace. You're going to take the larger handle nut. You're going to want to make sure that the nut is facing towards the middle of our truck, and we're going to feed it in. We're going to do our best to line it up with that bolt that's coming through the frame. Then, once we have it lined up, we're going to thread it into place. Now, it may take a little bit of patience and a little bit of bending to get it in the right position.Once you have that bolt in place, I'm going to come back with a three quarter inch socket and I'm going to snug up all my hardware. I'm going to put the other one in on the other side, and then we'll snug up the rest of our hardware as well. With all of our hardware in place and snugged down, we're going to come back with a three quarter inch socket and a torque wrench. We're going to torque all our hardware to the specified amount in the instructions. Now, the handle nuts, you're going to want to grab a pair of sidecutters. You're going to want to go pretty high to the frame. You're just going to want to start bending it back and forth, and it'll come right off. We're going to repeat that for all the remaining handle nuts. We're going to take those bolts with the intercooler, and we're going to thread them back into place. Now, we're going to take our arms. We're going to notice that there's going to be a pin with a pull ring on it. We're going to put that right on top. We're going to push it in and turn it until it locks in place. Now, if you're adding wiring or a braking system to your flat tow setup, our kit is going to come with some brackets. We can simply just remove our license plate bracket here, drill a couple of holes into the metal part of the bumper, and secure the bracket to either side of our license plate. We're going to have a nice spot for our breakaway switch as well as our electrical connections. That'll finish up your look at the Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plate Kit with Removable Arms, part number RM-524431-5, on our 2016 F-150.

I've been towing a vehicle behind my motor home for the last 12 years. That includes four trucks and one car. Each time I've used Roadmaster Base Plates and a Roadmaster tow bar. I find that when I'm outfitting a new truck for towing, etrailer always has the parts I need (base plates and taillight wiring) at the best prices with the quickest shipping. 794428

2016 Ford Explorer

Bad experience with Roadmaster this time around! I have used their product for 15 years on my Ford Explorer towing behind a 40 foot diesel pusher with no issues. Purchased this set for my 2016 F-150 Limited pickup on line from etrailer and the fit from Roadmaster was terrible!!! the passenger side slide in arm when locked in place with the receiver installed on the vehicle, made the horizontal female cocked to about 25 degrees up from a horizontal plane!!! this meant the arm from my $1200.00 Roadmaster tow arm would not hook up. I had to take to a weld shop to make repairs on the arm to set it in a horizontal position!!! Roadmaster would not believe this was possible to their product said they had only seen this happen once before? It happened before but now you don't believe ME? 647440

Product was very well built and was easily installed with two people. For my 2018 ford f150 I used the direct connect removable arms Rm- 524431-5 and added a cross bar for better stability. e-trailer sales the RM-524431-4 that has the cross bar for the same price. (My mistake and the truck towed better with a Cross bar) 619893

After pulling my pickup for the first time, the front bolt of the bracket sheared off. Had to go in a change the bolts to grade 8 bolts. So far everything has been working fine while pulling my pickup. 581689

These have worked well. They were a bit of a challenge to install, but that was more about the F150 than the brackets. 580024

Received yesterday, quality looks great; have installed one side. Instructions are fairly good but totally lacking on removal of the 2018 F150 bumper. Access to the bolts inside the frame on the 2018 is very good so used grade 8 nylock nuts instead of the included wire held nuts. Access to hold the full size hex nuts is very good so it was easier to hold the nuts while torquing. 578617

The order to delivery time was excellent! 2 days to get to central PA. I just finished installing the RM base plate to my 2018 Jeep Wrangler Sport. We plan on towing the Jeep behind my motor home. The installation went smoothly and the Jeep looks great. You can barely tell that it is rigged to be towed. 560301

I 1st bought the Blue Ox and found that it called for too many modifications and it was thin and flimsy. When I received the Roadmaster bass plate, I quickly seen that it was a better product. It's a thiker metal and had easy direction to follow. I've towed over 50,000 miles with it and haven't had any problems. 694420

The roadmaster rm-523193-5 arrived as promised. The box the base plate came is was damage, and a good 5 inch whole was exposed. Good news, was that upon opening the box nothing was damage. The base plate installed as intended, and etrailer videos was so helpful. Very happy with the way it looks on my 2018 Equinox . 718710

Review from a similar EZ5 in Base Plates

This base plate was as described and relatively easy to install. I watched the installation video several times as I was concerned taking the bumper cover and grill off the CR-V. I also watched to installation video for the Blue Ox base plate as it was slightly different and showed taking the off as one piece instead of two. The process was a bit tricky and I did break one clip on the drivers side. Other than snapping my 1/2" drill bit while drilling the hole, the installation was relatively easy and as portrayed in the installation video. I also purchase two metric bolts as my vehicle had neither on the bottom of the bumper cover. 445763

The product was exactly what I ordered and fit as easily as etrailer's very informative video tutorial showed that it would. The product was delivered before the expected date. And I was able to easily track the shipment. The best part of the etrailer experience was the extremely helpful staff member, Katie. My card had a problem going thru and Katie was as helpful in clearing that up as she was in assisting with the actual order. I will absolutely recommend etrailer to everyone. 253106

Great experience, quick shipping, excellent video and instructional references to go along with the products. I did the installation of the product myself and without the text and instructional video's there is no way I would have been 100% successful. These are the extra value add things that make the difference when shopping with etrailer, I will be a return customer. The base plate is of high quality construction and fit perfectly on my 2016 Jeep Wrangler. I use this with the Falcon 2 tow bar for my 2016 Jeep Wrangler - 2014 Fleetwood Bounder motorhome combination. 339284

  • Flat Towing 2019 Ford F-150 with 5,000 Pound Trailer Hitch on RV
The 6,500 pound GVW of your 2019 Ford F-150 refers to the most it can weigh with seated passengers and cargo loaded. Since the truck won't have any passengers inside when flat towing it behind an RV it's not going to weigh this much. I looked up the base weight of your F-150 and depending on your exact model and specs it has a weight of around 4,000 to 5,697 pounds. Since the higher end of this range does still exceed the hitch capacity on your RV I highly recommend taking the truck...

In order to flat tow a twelfth generation (2011-2014) Ford F-150 behind your RV, you will need a base plate kit, tow bar, safety cables, a lighting solution, a supplemental braking system, and most likely a high-low adapter. Starting with the base plates, I recommend the Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plate Kit # RM-524431-5 if you have the EcoBoost or the Roadmaster MX Base Plate Kit # 495-3A if you don't have the EcoBoost. For a tow bar, I'd recommend the Roadmaster Falcon 2, part # RM-520, assuming that the as-towed weight of your truck is under 6000 lbs. For safety cables, use part...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2015-2018 Ford F-150 Behind a Motorhome
In order to flat-tow a thirteenth generation (2015-2018) Ford F-150 with all four wheels on the ground behind a motorhome you are going to need a tow bar, base plate kit, safety cables, tail light wiring harness, supplemental braking system, and possibly a high-low adapter. There may also be a few other smaller components that are needed depending on options the vehicle is equipped with. For a tow bar, I recommend the Roadmaster Nighthawk All Terrain Tow Bar part # RM-676. The Nighthawk...

There is little difference between the Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plate Kit # RM-524431-5 and Demco Tabless Base Plate Kit # DM9519318, each of which fit your 2016 Ford F-150, as both base plate kits will give your truck a clean look and come with complete instructions. • Difference Between Crossbar Style Baseplate and Direct Connect Baseplate Towing 2019 Ford F-150
The main difference between the Roadmaster Crossbar Style Baseplate # RM-524431-4 and the Roadmaster Direct Connect Baseplate # RM-524431-5 comes down to the ease of installation of the tow bars; typically vehicles that require some extra stability will only have the crossbar style available. Crossbar style tow bars are traditionally going to be much heavier and more difficult to install on the tow vehicle than the direct connects, but once you're pulling I don't think you'll notice a considerable...

  • Recommended Parts to Flat Tow a 2017 Ford F-150 4x4 Behind and RV
The Roadmaster Nighthawk # RM-676 is an excellent tow bar choice. It is indeed compatible with the EZ5 base plates, # RM-524431-5, for your 2017 Ford F-150. Since the tow bar comes with safety cables you will not need to add any of those to your order. Lighting kit # RM-154 will also work with the truck. This lighting kit uses 4-Way flat connectors so to use it with the 6-Way end on the tow bar's wiring you will also need connector # RM-910030-7 to mount to the front of the truck. Then...

  • Can Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit RM-524431-5 Be Used with Sterling All Terrain Tow Bar
Yes, the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit # RM-524431-5 on your 2018 Ford F-150 will work perfectly with the Roadmaster Sterling All Terrain Tow Bar # RM-576. You are correct that when hooking up to the base plate arms you will remove the crossbar on the Sterling All Terrain, as the tow bar arms will hook up directly to the Roadmaster base plates. This does allow for a much simpler hookup process. You can simply keep the quick-disconnect crossbar in storage in case you ever need...

  • Can the Sterling Tow Bar Safety Cables be Used with Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plates
There is a way to use the safety cables that come with the Sterling tow bar # RM-576 with Roadmaster EZ5 base plates such as # RM-524431-5 for the 2017 Ford F-150. The Sterling cable anchors must be attached to the frame of the towed vehicle or welded to the receiver portion of the base plate brackets. A professional welder could perform this task for a nominal fee. The other option is to not use the included cables and instead use separate coiled cables such as # RM-653.

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2016 Ford F-150 with Roadmaster Stowmaster Tow Bar
The Roadmaster Stowmaster tow bar part # RM-501 has a 6k weight capacity so it would work to tow your 2016 Ford F-150 as the weights I looked up for it are between 4 and 5.2k. For a base plate kit you would need to go with a new one since a kit from a Chevy truck would not fit. You would have to use the XL kit part # RM-524431-5 as that is what's compatible with your truck and the tow bar. If you were in need of safety cables you would then also need the part # RM-643 which are coiled. For...
