Simple, Tabless Design

Setting up these tabless base plates for use with your Demco tow bar is fast and easy. Just remove the attachment lugs from the ends of your tow bar arms and replace them with these tabs. Then you can just insert the tow bar arms into the base plate receivers to hook up. There's no need to remove the tabs from your tow bar, so you won't run the risk of misplacing tabs. And because the tabs remain on your tow bar at all times instead of protruding from your vehicle, your car maintains a clean look when it's not being towed.

Easy Hookup and Disconnect

Demco Base Plate Tabless Hookup

Using the Demco Tabless base plates to attach and remove your tow bar couldn't be easier. With the base plate tabs attached to your tow bar arms, simply insert the tabs into the receivers on your vehicle and twist to lock them in place. Insert the included pull pins to add an extra layer of security, ensuring the tabs stay put. To remove each arm, simply tug the pull pin to disengage the lock, twist the tow bar arm, and pull the tab out of the bracket.

Receiver Covers

Demco Base Plate Tabless Pull Ear Cover

Keep dirt and debris out of the base plate receivers with the included covers. These high-density polyethylene covers easily snap into place over each pull point when your tow bar is not attached. Limiting internal corrosion makes it easier to slide the tabs in and out and helps to prevent seizing so that the tabs don't get stuck.

Tow Bar Adapters

If you have a Demco Kwik-Tow tow bar or a tow bar from a different manufacturer, an adapter may be available. Demco makes adapters for use with other tow bars so that you don't have to go through the added hassle and expense of replacing your tow bar when outfitting your new towed car with base plates.

Video Transcript for Demco Tabless Base Plate Kit Installation - 2017 Jeep Compass

Rob: Rob here at etrailer.com. And today you're going to be taking a look at the Demco tabless base plate on our 2017 Jeep Compass. Now here's where our base plate's going to look like once we have it fully installed. You can see that it's going to be really nice and it's going to have a very minimal look on the front of our Compass, and we're not going to have anything really sticking out causing any kind of distractions. Our base plate is going to connect directly to the frame of our compass. That way it's a solid connecting point for our tow bar to hook up to so we can safely flat tow it down the road.

What I really like about our Demco base plate is the fact that it is a tablet's design, which means that we're not going to have those arms sticking out.Our baseplate is going to spread that towing force across the front of our Jeep. That way we're putting less strain and stress on the front suspension. So that way it'll last longer and not have so much wear and tear. And when we do want to hook up, we can just twist the cover. It'll come right out.

Now, the arm here, this is actually going to be bolted directly onto the tow bar, which is a nice thing because we don't ever have to worry about losing this, but when we want to put it in and start towing. We can just simply slide it into where the holes are going to be up and down, and then we'll twist it and you can see it locks into place. And to make sure it's not going to come out, we can take the keeper pin, slide it in through the hole and then put the clip to make sure it's not going to come undone. And the fact that the arm here is going to be attached directly to the tow bar means that it's going to be even less likely that we can lose them or misplace them because once we unhook, it will be directly on our tow bar and then it'll store with it. And like most base plates, we're going to have an easily accessible hook for our safety cables. That way, when we're hooking up, we can just hook our safety cables up.

We don't have to reach around or fight the grill or anything. And Demco also does include this bracket here so we can mount our electrical accessories. So we have all of our lighting functions for our flat tow setup as well. Just keep in mind that the plug as well as all the wiring is sold separately, but you can find that here at etrailer.com. Now, if you just got your Jeep and you already have a tow bar from a previous vehicle that you we're towing.

Our Demco base plate is going to work with all Demco Victory Series tow bars, as well as others from other manufacturers. You just need an adapter that is going to be sold separately. And you can find that here at etrailer.com. I'd like to give you a few measurements from bracket to bracket. It's going to be a total of 21" across and from the ground to the middle of our attachment point you're right about 17-1/2". Now that measurement's important cause you want to make sure you have a nice level towing setup. So you want to make sure and measure your hitch on your motor home to see the difference there. Now keep in mind, that's only going to be one component you need for a complete safe, flat tow setup. For a complete setup, you're going to need a base plate, a tow bar, tow bar wiring, a braking system, and finally safety cables. As far as the installation goes, it's going to be very straightforward. We are going to be required to remove the front fascia so we can get behind here and get access to everything. And then we are going to have to trim a little bit and cut on the lower grill so that a tabs and the electrical connector can come through, but there's no drilling required and there's no welding. It's a simple bolt on installation. Let's go and do that together. To begin our installation. We want to open up the hood and at the very front here, we're going to have a few fasteners that we're going to have to remove. So we have a T30 Torx bit and we can pull the six fasteners on the front of the grill out.Now on the very edge of the grill if we move back towards the back of the car, we'll find a 10mm bolt on each side. We're going to want to pull these out. So we'll grab a 10mm socket. And we're going to unscrew both bolts. And then if we move down towards the front of the grill right here, the corner. We're going to have a push pin holding it in on each side. Grab a flat blade screwdriver. There should be a small notch at the pushpin. If we come underneath that notch, we'll pop out the center section first. That's going to relieve a lot of the tension off the push pin and we can come underneath the base and pull the rest of it out. We'll do the same thing on the other side. We're going to move to the front wheel wall now. And at the very edge, we're going to have four bolts that are holding it in place. We're going to want to pull all those out. So I grab an 8mm socket and remove them. Now, if we come to the outer part of our wheel wall, where we have that trim piece that goes along the edge here. We're going to need to pull it away from the fascia itself. So if we come down towards the bottom, we'll see where the seam is, and we're going to start here. We're going to grab the corner of it and you're going to want to pull out. Now, there is a clip right here at the bottom. So if you can get a plastic trim panel tool or anything in there, it'll help if you can pry on it. So we don't break the clip, but we are going to need to pull on this. As you can see, it's flexing a lot. So I'm going to try to get a tool in there to release that white clip that's in there.Once we have the first clip released, we're going to start working our way up. Now, there are going to be several more clips going along the way, and really we want to get it loosened up at least to where our fender meets our fascia. You just want to be careful when you're releasing these because you don't want the clips to break. And if you do need to get something in there, try use something plastic. That way we won't scratch the paint are doing damage. So once we have it released about to here, we should have plenty of room moved back to the inside of the wheel-well and just start peeling it back a little bit. You're just going to move the plastic out of the way a little bit. And if we look right where our fender meets our fascia here. The bottom here, we can see a bolt coming from the top. So we need to remove that bolt from up here, so we're going to grab a 10mm socket and pull that bolt out. We're going to repeat that entire process on the other side as well. Now we're going to move on to the very front of our Jeep. And if we look at this plastic shield semi held on by a total of five of these fasteners, they're going to be going all along the front, going across all the way, edge to edge. So grab that T30 Torx bit again and we'll pull all five of those fasteners out. Now we're getting ready to remove our fascia at the very corner where we removed that bolt. You want to grab a plastic trim panel tool, flathead screwdriver, whatever you have available, but you want to separate the painted section here from that black section. There's a little keeper tab that holds everything in place. And once you have it separated, we're going to grab the outer edge of the fascia and we'll pull outward, that way it'll release without breaking these clips. Now, it is a good idea to get an extra set of hands, and we're going to start working our way from the outer edge to the center. You may need to lift up the bottom of the fascia, kind of working at loose, lifting up on all those tabs and bring them up past the supports here. Now on the passenger side, we're going to have this large plug. You're going to come to the end here where that tab is, we're going to squeeze it and we're going to slide the entire thing back towards the back and it should come undone. Then we can set our fascia aside where it won't get damaged. Now, with the fascia removed if we look right at our bumper beam at the bottom here. We're going to have a nut and if we come down to the lower section as well, we'll have another nut on the corner. We're going to want to pull both those out. So use a 10mm socket and remove both of them.Once those are removed, we're going to remove the two bolts that are on the lower section of our bumper beam and the three bolts that are holding this lower plate in as well. So we'll grab a 15mm socket and we'll pull those out. Now once we have all the bolts removed, we'll remove the lower plate, and we'll repeat the same process on the other side. Now on the side of our radiator here, we're going to have these air deflectors. We're going to trim a section out so that our base plate can fit. I went ahead and marked out the area. I'm just going to use a pair of tin snips to cut this out, because this is just this rubbery plastic, but you can use whatever you have available, a knife, a pair of tin snips, or even some scissors. And we're going to trim out that same area on the other side. Now, at this point, we're going to get ready to put our base plate into position. We're going to hang it temporarily by the two bolts on the lower section of our bumper beam. So we're going to grab an M10 bolt out of our kit. We'll follow it up with a split lock washer and then a flat washer and then you want to grab the Blue Loctite out of your kit and make sure you put a bead on the threads. And we're going to do that for each one of the bolts. Make sure you put a little bit of Loctite on there. Now with an extra set of hands we're going to lift our base plate up. We're going to line up those two holes with the studs, making sure that this does pop through and the oblong holes line up and we'll take our bolts and we're just going to loosely get it started by hand. That way the base plate will support itself and we can work on getting the rest of the hardware in. Now, once you have the two bolts started on the top, we'll move down to the bottom and we're going to reuse the factory bolts to go back in to the two spots on the bottom. Now, if you need to get them started by hand, but if you need to tighten up these bolts a little bit to draw the base plate in, you can do that also. We're going to grab the plate out of our kit, and this is going to rest right on top of the bumper beam here with the holes going to either side. And we want to grab one of the long, M10 bolts out of our kit.Again, make sure you put that Loctite on there. We'll follow that up with a split lock washer and then a flat washer. We're going to come down through our plate, drop it all the way down and it will line up with a hole that's in our base plate, right in this tab here. Now there are going to be holes on each side. So we'll get it started by hand on one. We'll take our other bolt, drop it down through the hole in the plate. We're going to want to line it up with the tab on the base plate on the inside. Again, we'll just get everything started by hand, make sure it threads in. And we'll repeat that process on the other side as well. And once you have both bolts in that plate in position, and I come back with a 15mm socket and I'm going to snug them up. They kind of want to alternate going back and forth and you want to tighten it up until your base plates going to draw up and touch the bottom of the bumper beam here. You want to do that on both sides. We're going to come back with a 15mm socket and tighten up the two factory bolts on the bottom on each side. Grab a 17mm socket, and we're going to tighten up our M10 bolts on each side. We're going to come back with a torque wrench. We're going to torque all of our hardware down to the specified amount in the instructions. We're going to go back and repeat that for any remaining hardware that you have. Now over here on the passenger side, one thing you might notice is that we've got this air conditioner line that runs right in between our base plate and when we go to put it on, you want to be careful. And then once it is torqued down, kind of want to feel and make sure that it's not touching anywhere and if it is just gently want to push that line out of the way and just bend it enough to where it's not going to touch and it's not going to cause any problems. But do you want to be careful not to break it, so we just want a small little gap to where nothing's touching. And with our base plate torqued down, we can put on our permanent safety cables. Now, when you put these in, you want to make sure that it's wrapped around the base plate, as well as the solid piece of the frame. So I'm going to take one end. I'm going to go over the top of that bumper beam and frame section come all the way down, and then I'll have them both meet up right around this hole on the outer edge and grab one of the quick links out of our kit, pass it through the base plate. I'm going to attach my safety cables onto the end of it and we're just going to tighten it all up. Make sure it's nice and secure. Now you do have the option to tie up any excess cable so it's not going to be interfering with putting our fascia back on, but it should be okay. We'll just grab a couple of zip ties and secure it so we don't have such a loose cable here. Before we can put our fascia back on we're going to have to do a little bit of trimming so those tabs can come out of the lower grill area. Now there is a diagram in your instructions, but the easiest way to find out where you need to trim is if you hold your fascia up against your Jeep, as close to where it's going to sit. You can mark out where the tab is going to take up that room. Might come back with a pair of tin snips and we're just going to cut out that lower section. And you can always come back and clean up our cuts using a Dremel tool, or we can just come back using a knife and cut off the little sharp edges. We'll cut out the other side as well. With our fascia trimmed, we can get ready to put it back on. However, if you're going to be adding wiring now would be a really good time to do that because it's going to be a lot easier to route your wire around rather than having to try to fight the fascia. Get behind it and everything. So we're going to go ahead and mount our wiring up and our Demco base plate does come with a bracket that'll attach either on the driver or the passenger side of the base plate. And this makes way so we can add a four or a six way round and mount it up.We're going to have a couple of 1/4" bolts in our kit. We'll drop them down through the bracket. And there's two tabs that are going to be on the inside. It has a hole in there. We'll drop those down. And then on the bottom, we're going to take a locked lock washer and a nut and we're going to secure everything. So for now, we'll just put it on there loosely. Just enough to where it won't fall off when you come back and tighten everything up.I'm going to grab a 7/16 socket and wrench, and I'm going to tighten up the hardware, holding my bracket in place. And if you are using the bracket, don't forget to trim out a small section in the grill so our plug can stick out as well. Now with an extra set of hands and we put our fascia back in place. You want to make sure that you plug that connector back in, and then it locks back in. We'll line up our fascia. I'm going to go over the hood supports here and makes sure that all your electrical connectors and the base plate's going to come through the facial where you trimmed it. Then we can go back through, let's get all the clips in place and start putting all of the hardware back in. That'll finish up your look at the Demco tabless base plate on our 2017 Jeep Compass..

Relatively easy to install, works great, less obtrusive than other brands. Instructions are clear, quality is good. Shown with knuckles removed. As you can see, I had to improvise to mount the coiled cord socket and breakaway switch.

Installation went well! The pictures in instructions are a bit hard to decipher! Using it in a few days. It is a replacement my last CR V 2003 was totalled in an accident had a Blue Ox before seems comparable!

Really good tow bar. It has pulled my Jeep Cherokee for over 7,000 miles this year with no issues. Only problem was when I had to do a u-turn with minimal turning room and one of the storage pins on top of the tow bar got bent.

Review from a similar Tabless in Base Plates

I recently completed a DIY installation of the Demco Tabless Base Plate on my 2021 Jeep Wrangler. Installation is fairly straightforward following the etrailer.com videos. A couple gotchas on the videos.

First, one of the videos suggests removing a sheet metal plate to provide easier access. While it does make for easier access during removal of the bumper, you should reinstall it BEFORE installing the base plate. If you install the baseplate first, there is insufficient clearance for the bolts that hold the sheet metal plate.

Second, the videos show reinstalling the plastic air dam after reinstalling the bumper. At least on my 2021 Wrangler there is NO way you could do that without seriously bending, and possibly breaking the plastic dam. Reattach the dam to the bumper BEFORE reattaching the bumper. Clearances for rebolting the bumper are sufficient. I did it without a lift (thank goodness for the Wrangler’s high ground clearance).

Bottom line is it’s a bit of a project but looks great.

I received the parts from etrailer much sooner than expected. They ship very fast.
Unfortunately some of the hardware was missing. The box arrived a little beat up. The bag the hardware came in was torn open. It seems that a few nuts and bolts were lost in transit. Since my shipment arrived on a Saturday, I did not wait until Monday to call for replacements. I went down to local HW store and bought what I needed. Fitment was excellent and installation went very smooth. I will continue to shop etrailer for all my towing needs.

Awesome product but definitely not for home installation. However once installed it’s simple to attach and detach towed. We tow a Cherokee behind a 40’ class A. You can hardly tell it’s there. It takes me less than 15 minutes or less either way.

The reinstall kit for the SMI stay and play duo braking system was exactly what I needed we removed it out of a 2012 Cadillac SRX and a RV shop will be installing it in a 2020 Jeep Wrangler I will send pics of the final installation later on this month ! Great product was delivered with all parts needed in three days and as usual great customer service !

Review from a similar Tabless in Base Plates

Unfortunately these base plates did not fit up to the front grill near as well as past ones I have purchased from you. A lot more cutting on my vehicle was required that should not have been needed. Also having to convert my towbar to less desirable Demco attachment was disappointing. I purchased Blue Ox for a reason and would have been much happier if Ox style pins were supplied to fit Demco sockets.

Comments
As long as the Blue Ox tow bar is a hitch mounted tow bar which means that it connects to the RV via sliding into the hitch receiver then it is compatible with the base plate and does not need an adapter.

etrailer is special. They have all the information you need to have about the products you are looking for. I am a first time RV owner and was looking for a way to flat tow my Jeep Wrangler. etrailer made it so easy for me to understand what I should be doing and the best and safest way to accomplish it. But that was not all. I was having issues trying to find shipping options as I had a time crunch. I phoned them, customer service was awesome. They helped me place the order and get it to my home within my time requirements. I honestly recommend them and can only wish that other companies could treat customers the way they do here. Awesome! The videos on the product pages are the best!

Superb, timely, same-day support from Demco when I ran into installation difficulties. The attach method is also very solid and has internal safety cables as stock, unlike some other baseplate manufacturers. (These are different from the safety cables you hook to your vehicle. These will hold the baseplate to the frame if the baseplate breaks away from the car for any reason so you don't lose the car.)

It is well built, fit as expected. Easy to install. Warning to future buyers to install on crv, the hole you drill in bumper is difficult because it is high strenght steel regular drill bit do not work well. I managed to drill it with a step bit. The baseplate needs a small decal to say "this side upward"
