Simple, Hidden Design

Blue Ox Base Plate With Arms AttachedBlue Ox Base Plate Arms Removed

This base plate's hidden design creates a clean and seamless look. The bracket arms are easily removable, creating a slick appearance when you're not flat towing. Because the arms can be removed, you also won't have to worry about banging your leg into any protruding arms when you walk by.

Blue Ox Base Plate Removable Arms

Attaching and removing the bracket arms is a breeze. To attach the arms to the base plate, simply insert them into the receivers and rotate them until they lock into place. Once you're finished towing and want to remove the arms, pull the pin to disengage the lock, rotate the arms, and remove them from the receivers. Finally, plug up the now empty receivers with the included receiver covers to help keep dirt and debris out of the base plate and provide a finished look.

Guide to Flat Towing

Flat towing your vehicle is much more convenient than using a trailer or a tow dolly. These other options take up much more storage space, leaving you less room both at home and at the campsite. In addition, securing your vehicle to a trailer or tow dolly can be a hassle and more time consuming than hooking up with a tow bar.

There are 5 basic components needed when flat towing a vehicle: a tow bar, a base plate kit, a safety cable set, tow bar wiring, and a supplemental braking system.

Towing Basics

The tow bar links your towed car to your motorhome. It attaches to the custom-fit base plates that install on the frame of your towed car. Safety cables ensure that your towed car does not separate from your motorhome in the event that your tow bar becomes detached. Tow bar wiring allows your towed vehicle's signal lights to sync up with your motorhome's tail lights, which is required by law in most states. Finally, the supplemental braking system - also required in most states - brakes your towed car when the brakes in your motorhome are activated, preventing wear on the motorhome and decreasing braking distance for your entire setup.

2009 Honda Element

2009 Honda Element. Did installation myself took 2 hours. Buy new 13/16th drill bits. Use vise grips to hold in place while drilling. Be sure to use Locktite red on bolts. I also installed the wiring kit for this vehicle. I added an extra wire from RV braking light in center of RV back to braking light in Element back window. My bicycles block tail lights on Element. I used the six wire kit that came with coiled cord and two recepticals. Used lots of zip ties to secure wires along frame.

2nd trailer tow hitch in 2 years and both were great; from the order, the delivery schedule and great product ill order from them again.

My hitches are working out great, I made a 5000+miles trip to Montana and back and had no problems!

2003 Honda Element

Baseplate Installation: I called several RV and trailer hitch centers. Parts and installation ranged from $2,050 to $2,200! Yikes! I read many installation reviews that concerned me about installing this tow bar myself on my 2003 Honda CRV. One reviewer took over 7 hours; some gave up. Yet, some reviewer didn't have difficulties. I view eTrailer's install video on a 2003 Honda Element, similar to the CRV; didn't seem all that difficult, but it's what you don't see that can be the problem. Received the tow bar before the expected delivery date! Read the instruction; watch the video again, and said, what the heck. Before I started, I purchased a new, high-quality 13/32" bit, Locktite (red), and six push rivets from Honda (I figured I break a few, and I did, and some were missing). Working slowly and reading the instructions, I had the front end off in 45 min (Steps 1-4). Removed the metal bumper, drilled and set frame support bolts, and removed the bumper flange in an hour (Steps 5-8). I did grind smooth and primer the removed flange area (photo). My 86 y.o. father-in-law help me with the baseplate attachment. Took our time; did a dry fit to see how the receivers fit through the grill; drilled, set bolts, and safety cable; all in less than an hour (Steps 9-11). I stood back and couldn't believe it was installed; what did I miss? Nothing. Reassembled the front end. Didn't have to cut the grill. I am most pleased.

Everything I have purchased from etrailer has been perfect, good quality, price and fast shipping. Way to go etrailer, Please continue to strive for the BEST.

This fit well and is barely perceptible with the arms removed. It does require some custom drilling on the Honda CRV frame so it is not for a beginner, but it is nicely designed and quite strong.

Fairly easy install and the videos help ed.

Excellent product. Price is too high but I still love it.

2008 Honda Element

I bought this base plate for a 2008 Honda Element. Fit was great. Some grinding and drilling required. Instructions were good. It took me 2.5 hours to install. If you don't have a shop with lift and plenty of tools install time will be longer.

Easy to install with normal hand tools and minimal mechanical talent.

i have a 2007 honda element sc,i purchased a blue ox bx 2232 baseplate and wanna know why all the sites show no baseplate for the sc model?will this baseplate work on my sc if not can you tell me why and what baseplate i need if so.thank youmoose
-- comment by: moose - 11/27/2013

According to Blue Ox, the BX2232 fits all Element with the exception of the SC models. The front fascia headlights and bumper cover are different on the SC models and it will not accommodate the Blue Ox base plates. The BX2232 has the detachamble tabs up higher than does Roadmaster, which is why the Roadmaster kits will work but the Blue Ox will not. Check out 1541-5 and 1541-3 from Roadmaster.

Review from a similar Standard in Base Plates

Just what I needed to flat tow my Jeep Wrangler. When I first received the base plate I was thinking about having it installed, but after watching the installation video I decided to do it myself. Couldn't have asked for a smoother install. The permanent base plate safety cables concerned me a little. I came up with a figure-8 over the frame that I think will work ok and I did secure it with some cable ties in a couple of spots. Thanks to Nick at etrailer for the help and to the folks that made the installation video giving me the confidence to do-it-myself.

The base plate still works great and looks good too. No issues.

Review from a similar Standard in Base Plates

This is a really solid base plate. Installation for the Pontiac Vibe was is definitely more involved that installing the alternative (Road Master). The Road Master base plate just bolts through existing bumper holes and an engine mount. This base plate is bolted directly to the frame just behind the bumper, with four 3/8" grade 5 bolts in holes you have to drill after clamping the base plate in place. I found it easy to get the required height (3/4" below bumper) but simply using a 1x3 piece of lumber. You also have drill a 1.25"hole in the frame to gain access to the inside of the frame. Tricky part of this install is getting the nuts, which are welded to a 1" plate and a ~14" steel rods, into place to be line up with the holes. It is a little hard to see. I also recommend making sure the bolts actually thread easily on to the nuts before putting the nuts in the the frame. I had the misfortune of one of the either cross threading or jamming, and I ended up having to cut the bolt head off with a sawsall using a metal blade. The bolt had not gone very far into the nut before it jammed so I was just able to get the sawsall blade behind the head, and cut it off, holding the head with a pair of vice grips. If that hadn't worked I would have had to take the car to a shop with oxy-acetaline torch to have it cut off. I was able to fish the cut of bolt out for the frame with a bent coat hanger. The first photo is of the base plate after I cut off the bolt. Blue Ox support was GREAT! I sent them and email explaining that I needed new nuts and bolts, and they sent the needed parts (at no charge!). I just had to put my install on hold for several days. The second problem I had was in attaching the electrical harness recepticle to the tubes on the to bar. One of the self tapping screws twisted off as I was tighting it. I ended up cutting of 1/2" of the tubes (with the sawsall) and then tapping the tubes with 1/4x20 threads, and regaining the length cut off with the bolt. My recommendation to blue ox, is that they tap these tubes with to 1/4x20, and provide regular bolts to attach the recepticle. The second picture showes the result. When I showed the 3rd and 4th pictures to my mechanic, he was impressed and said, "That looks really solid!" The last picture shows the front of the car after I have started to assemble it (with the styrofoam padding on the bumper, and the draw bars in place. The solidity of the Blue Ox engineering and the FABULOUS customer support has totally turned my into a Blue Ox fan. I'm glad my RV dealer suggested that I go with Blue Ox instead of the slightly cheaper solution, that would have been much less solid.

Review from a similar Standard in Base Plates

Installing this baseplate on my 2019 Honda SI was almost easy. As long as I took my time. Instructions were clear & photos accurate. Did most of the work myself, but wife helped at critical points. We are in our seventies, so we spread moving pad over layers of cardboard on concrete to cushion our old bones. Only slight cutting needed on plastic grill. Everything blended into the grill nicely.

After a year, we have towed the Civic over 5K mi. Everything is still tight, but I check it periodically just to make sure.

Review from a similar Standard in Base Plates

This base plate is ideal for our use, it was a relatively easy installation but you will need patience. Probably removing the right amount of Styrofoam at the right locations was the most tedious as you will not get the front body work back on. This was money well spent and the technical assistance from etrailer was invaluable.

  • Recommended Flat-Tow Setup For 2003 Honda Element Being Towed By 2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
While we do not offer a flat-towing kit for your 2003 Honda Element, I would be happy to recommend all of the parts you will need to safely flat-tow it with your 2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Motorhome. First you will need a custom fit base plate kit, I recommend the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX2232 which will blend in pretty well to the grille with the arms removed as you can see in the included picture. Moving on to a tow bar compatible with the Blue Ox # BX2232 I recommend the Blue...

It was designed for use on the 2002-2004 model years. Instead you will use Blue Ox Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms part # BX2238. From what I was able to find in my research, the 2002 Honda CR-V can be flat towed. I would recommend checking your copy of the owner's manual to verify this. It sounds like you've already got a Blue Ox tow bar, so you're going to be best served by using Blue Ox base plates like the Base Plate Kit with Removable Arms # BX2232; this just means you won't need to use an adapter to connect to the tow bar as you would if using a different manufacturer's base plates with your tow bar. Next, you will need a tow bar. For that I would go with the Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar # BX7380 as it is the most popular tow bar we have with other Element owners. These come with safety cables.
