Video Transcript for Blue Ox Base Plate Kit Installation - 2015 Chevrolet Colorado

Today on our 2015 Chevrolet Colorado 4WD, we're going to take a look at, and then show you how to install, the Blue Ox base plate kit with removable arms. This is part number BX1721. This is going to work for the Chevy Colorado 4WD with or without the adaptive cruise control, and also for the 2015 GMC Canyon 4WD with or without the adaptive cruise control. Basically, you can see the kit all spread out here. That's the main part of the unit, that's going to be the actual base plate itself. We've got our removable arms here. This is a really good custom fit design, so we're going to have the spacers that fit right into the factory holes there.

We're going to have our quick disconnects that'll work with our permanent safety cables which you can see here. These wrap around the frame of the vehicle and connect to the base plate in case of system failure, and you can see just a little bit of hardware here that isn't already existing in the car. We've just got the two bolts with the nylon lock nuts there. Nice thing about it, something that I like, we've got our breakaway switch attachment point there and a couple screws to help us do that. We've got the bolt to attach our breakaway switch to the breakaway bracket, and depending on the wiring that you're going to use, if you're using a four-pole, they've even given you the two set screws and the two nuts and bolts here and the two tabs that you can convert the two long arms that stick off there for a seven-pole or a six-pole, right down for use with a four-pole. It's a really all-encompassing kit, not really difficult to install.

You have to do a little bit of trimming, but we've got a full kit of instruction that goes over everything for us, and then all of our warranty information, permanent base plate safety cable installation and things like that. Here's what our base plate looks like with the arms removed, everything installed. Pretty clean look. You're not adding a lot of cosmetic changes to the vehicle here. We've still got our four-pole kind of wrapped up there. We'll be doing that when we do the wiring on it.

You can see our breakaway switch is mounted here in a real nice location, real easy to get to. The base plate's going to have the connectors here, so we can put our wiring right onto that if we decide to. We've got our safety chain connection points, then we've got our base plate itself, as you can see. It's going to come with black caps we can put in there to keep any large bugs or mud or snow or stuff like that from getting in those as we head down the road. Once those are out of the way, we can bring in our base plate arms. They're going to slide in and then rotate into position there.

I'll show you again on this one. Slide in, and then we can rotate them. There you'll see when it's time to take them out, just pull that pin, rotate it the other way, come right out real easy in and out. Our tow bar will connect right onto our quick removable arms there, and we're ready to head down the road once we've got it all hooked up to the RV. The first thing that we need to do for installation is to grab a T15 Torx bit. We're going to take out the six black screws located across the front of the fascia here. Of course, we want to hang on to all the hardware that we remove. Our next step, we're going to be removing a few screws inside of our fender well here. Since we don't have an added-on fender flare, we can see one, two, and three. If you do have an added-on fender flare, you'll be able to see the top one and the bottom one, but that middle one's going to be hidden. Once the flare's out of the way, you can then get to the middle one. We want to remove all three of those. We'll do the exact same thing over on our passenger side. Just in behind our fender liner here, let me pull it up. Use a little screwdriver or a little pick, there's going to be three 7mm screws. You can see one here pretty easily, but there's going to be another one located just past it right up here, and then one even further in. We've got three on this side and three on the driver's side that we want to take care of. That's what they're going to look like once we get them out. They're pretty long screws. To get to the third one, I'm going to pull this fourth screw out of the bottom of this fender liner and give us a little more room to work with. Here on the underside, you can see the air deflector here on the front. We've got ten more of the T15 screws. Let's go ahead and get these backed out. You can see that's going to become kind of loose at that point. One more thing that we want to do if your vehicle is equipped with fog lights, you can see the pigtail that runs up to it here in the back. We're going to pinch down on that top and just kind of give it a wiggle so we can separate those. That'll make it a lot easier to do it now than when we're trying to hold up our fascia. If we go from the top edge of our license plate here, pretty much straight up there's going to be a little rib, then there's a hole. That hole is going to lead you right up to a bolt that you need a 10mm socket to take out. We need to do that on the passenger side and on the driver's side, there'll be one located there. If we come up here to the top side, right here there's going to be a little plastic tab that sticks up through that oblong hole. We want to lift over the top of that, see how that really allows that some flexibility now Also pull out and down on our outside corner here, we just kind of want to start working our fascia off. You can see it there. Go over and do the same thing on the other side. You kind of want to keep a hand on it. Pull that up, our outside out there. Now we'll set this on a safe surface so we won't have to worry about any scratching or any damage. Next, on the front side of our bumper, we're going to see four oblong holes. Two here on the passenger side, two over on the driver side. We need a 15mm socket, and we can back these out. We'll wait on completely removing it until we have all four of them loosened up. We'll finish taking this one out and shake them right off. We'll set that aside. Now we can use a pick or a small screwdriver, and we're going to remove the three pushpin fasteners here across the front. This is what holds the air dam on. It's okay if the middle of it comes out. You can see we just push it back together there. We'll take our air dam the rest of the way off by separating the two little clips on the outside. You're going to need a small screwdriver or a pick. There's a plastic tab inside of there that we need to pull out on. You see how that one separated We can go take care of the other side, and we'll just pull it right off. Just like that. On each side here, we're going to remove these 18mm headed bolts that are holding our tow hooks in place. You can see the other bolt, and then a flange nut on the other side that holds it in place. We're going to go over, do the same thing on the passenger side. We've got our factory temperature sensor here. We want to kind of pull up and out on that. See how we've got the two tabs that slide over and then the tab on the top. We're just going to get that out of the way for now. We'll reposition it when we need to. We're going to come right behind . This is where we just removed the two tow hook loops. There's going to be a piece of plastic right here. We want to trim three inches from the bottom on up. Set that at our three-inch mark there. Make a mark across the top, and then this area is what we'll be taking out. We'll need to do that on both sides. If you've got a rotary tool that can do a really good job at cutting this out. Just be careful of what's behind it. My preferred method is always a razor knife here. What I'm going to do is just kind of score along there a couple of times. See after a few passes, we'll be on through. We're going to trim right up along that rib edge all the way out the top. We've still got a small tab remaining here. It actually broke right there on us, which is fine, because it needs to come out, but we want to go straight up from there, all the way up to the top behind our panel up here. I think at this point, it'll be easier to use a pair of snips just to kind of finish that off like that. You want to see that hole nice and clear here. We'll come on over to the passenger side and do that exact same thing. We're going to grab our base plate. We want the double-hole side to be facing in towards our car. We're going to take it right over the top there. We just kind of got to wiggle it a little bit, and it should go right down into position. You can see here how our hole, that upper hole, we've got the double hole on the bottom, that upper hole, it's come down past on this side. That's looking fine. On this side, it didn't do it, so what we're going to do here is just pry out here a little bit. You can see that'll help start guiding it down where it needs to go. From that point, we should be able to just tap it down into position. We want to place our tow hook back into position, rotate our base plate so the holes line up in our tow hook and the hole on the outside of our base plate there. Slide that through, slide the other one through. Now we're going to place some red Loctite on each of those bolts and loosely install our flange nuts. Remember we took these off. This is our factory hardware. Just loosely install that for now. We can take care of the other side. We've got our large spacer tubes. These are going to go in the large hole, you can see it's kind of tapered down. That fits in that little bit smaller hole there. Should go in there, and that should fit flush up against the frame rail. Do that on both sides. If they don't go freely, we should just be able to kind of tap it a little bit and get it to go in there where it'll sit flush. We can get our half-inch by 3-1/4 bolts that come with the kit. We're going to slide those through the outside, through that spacer, and put a little red Loctite on, and also the nylon locking nut. We can tighten down our hardware. We want to put our base plate, see how it'll move up a little bit We want to get that up into its highest position, and we'll snug up all of our hardware. Now we just want to run through and get everything torqued to specification. The specs you'll find in our instructions. Now we're going to take one of our safety cables, and we want to run this around the frame rail. This is going to be our frame rail here, and we're going to connect it right here using a quick link. I suppose there are a couple different ways you could do this, and a couple ways you can route it. Just make sure it's not going to interfere with any moving parts that could become an issue, could create noise or unnecessary wear. Right in front of the little flaps or the air deflectors that are inside of there, we're going to connect ours out right there. Just like that, that'll be in great shape. Go through that one. Through that one, and through our base plate. We'll close up our quick link. We can go over to the passenger side, and we'll do the same thing. Now we'll take our ambient air temperature sensor, we're going to place that over the top of our base plate. We're just going to use a couple of criss-cross zip ties here to get it held up into position. It's going to be nice and secure there, where it'll get fresh air and give us a proper reading. Now that we've got our base plate put in place, it's going to be a good time to get our wiring mounted up here on our wiring pole, get our breakaway switch mounted. That way we're not trying to do it once the fascia's back on the car. Now for this installation, we're also going to be using a diode wiring kit. You can use diode wiring kit on this application or the bulb and socket, but whichever method you're going to use, go ahead and get your wiring started, too. This is the easiest time to get everything put where we want it. Now it's going to be time to trim these extra tabs or these extra brackets off the back of the bumper. We're going to take them off just about in front of that little hole there, and we want to go all the way straight down on both sides. You can use a Sawzall, you can use a little grinder, whatever your preference is. I'm going to use a saw. Now we're onto our air dam here. What we want to do is measure up from the front edge an inch and a half, then we can use our straight-edge to make a line across there. We're going to trim up right along this edge, right along this edge, and we're going to be getting rid of this entire inside portion here. We're also going to take out the four ribs that run across, and we'll be doing the same thing to this end. That's what it'll look like when we get done with it. Both ends trimmed out, and the ribs missing. Now we can get our bumper put back up into place there. Just reusing the four factory bolts that we removed when we took it out. Let's also get our air dam put back into place here. So the positioning of my ambient air temperature sensor there is now interfering with this going into place, you see I get it lined up, so I'm just going to notch out just a little section there for it to fit. Plenty of clearance room there, all the way around. Let's go ahead and put our pushpin fasteners back in. You can see there kind of at the end of each one of my fingers, there's a couple of pressure fasteners. Those are made to fit in the respective side in the small tab that's sticking down. That's what gave us a little bit of trouble coming off, as it always does, so we want to be sure we get those lined back up, and get them pushed in place. That'll kind of help hold everything. Take a good look around, make sure all of our tabs are lined up. Those are going to slide up in, once we get our screws in there. I'm just going to take one of our Torx screws and put it in here at the top, just finger tight in there, just to hold it in place. Do that on both sides. Now let's focus on those two main ones we had in the middle and get those reattached. Going to be pretty tough to kind of get started, but just kind of use a long extension. We'll go ahead and snug those down. Let's try to get the ones up here in our fender well started. Do that on both sides. We'll use our 7mm socket and we'll just tighten those down. We'll put our 10 screws back in the bottom. We'll get the ones put in our fender wells. Now we'll head up top here and take care of the six that we've got left. Remember two of them we already started, we'll just need to tighten those down. All right, everything's nice and tidied up, and that's going to complete today's installation of the Blue Ox base plate kit with removable arms, part number BX1721, on our 2015 Chevrolet Colorado.

I am a pretty good do it your selfer. This was the second base plate i have installed by myself. The first one was on a 2010 Honda Fit. This job took me about 8hrs. by myself. The instructions were first rate. Plus the BIGGEST help was the instructional video about this particular car. OUT STANDING!!! The only problem i had was getting the front plastic cap back on by my self, took awhile but i got it done. Then the second install was on my 2017 Chevrolet Colorado 4x4 pickup. I watched etrailers instructional video about 10 times. By the time i was ready to install the base plate, i pretty much knew what to expect and what to do. The truck job took me about 5 hrs. My best advice i can give is to WATCH their videos, not once, not twice but 4 or 5 times, or more, then the job goes along alot better. And it will be alot easier if you have some help to lift the front plastic cap off, and to reinstall. The rest can be done with no help. 586022

I believe I found a really good deal with this company. What I liked best was how user-friendly the site was in narrowing down the parts that I needed. It was like the items were "tailored" for my vehicle. The FAQ was instrumental in showing me what I needed to purchase for my Motorhome to be able to flat tow my 2016 GMC truck. Their prices were competitive. Everything came as ordered. One suggestion is to give the customer a time-line that is a little more specific as to the time it actually takes to gather the parts and leaves for shipment rather than sending a general, vague initial email that order was going to the warehouse. That said, I was pleasantly surprised to receive the shipment in less time than expected. I would highly recommend this vendor, as they were referred to me by a friend. Thanks Etrailer! 255310

2015 GMC Canyon 4X4 Crew Cab SLT Fairly simple install, have a dremel tool and a Sawzall with a metal blade available. Download the pdf file with color pictures. The black and white pics that are included are lacking. Be ready to cut (instructions say trim) the backs side of the bumber (not really a bumper) but a cross member behind the plastic bumper. You will have to cut on the black plastic parts, just take your time and follow the directions. I did have to cut two black tabs in the grill for the final look. 215866

The instruction are not exactly correct for the 2015 GMC Canyon. Step 6 shows two 10 mm bold to be loosened on the Chevrolet. These are not visible on the Canyon. I was still able to remove the facia without loosening them. When it came time to reinstall the facia, I had to separate the chrome grill from the painted facia to access the two screws to loosen them. I installed the painted facia first so I could tighten the two 10 mm screw and then snapped in the chrome grill 210020

Easy to install, super strong, this is a great set up for towing a full size truck...plan on at least 4 to 6 hours to install brackets, light kit and air brake set up...i would also recommend the roadmaster brakemaster air set up as well, simple to install, I prefer this setup over the SMI air force one, it is a much simpler setup, less likely to fail and no worries of vacuum leaks... 698172

This baseplate is very well made and sturdy. I would rate it excellent but for 2 flaws: 1. My vehicle has a power steering cooler which the instructions say to relocate on the supplied brackets. Relocating as instructed puts excessive strain on the connecting hoses. I had to cut the pipes and add about 3 inches of rubber hose to the power steering cooler to make it fit comfortably. 2. Blue Ox do not provide any kind of support outside office hours. This type of product is typically installed by the user over a weekend and BO should provide support to their customers during this time. Overall, I would rate ease of install at 5 (out of 10) excluding the cooler issue. Hook up to the completed baseplate is a breeze. We have the Aventa II towbar which takes about 2 minutes to connect. 108372

Great Product... fit as subscribed on 2011 Ford Ranger, easy to follow instructions. There was no communication from e-trailer. After 8 days of nothing I had to call, product at that time had not even been shipped. Very Disappointing. Not so sure I'll buy from them again. 281955

The base plate was fairly easy to install on our 2013 Honda C-RV. The videos on etrailer are very helpful, giving us the confidence to do the job in our own garage. The only problem with installation was that the holes didn't quite line up after removing the bumper. I think that was noted in the instructions. The removable arms work well and we have had no issues. We have been using this product towing our car behind our motor home for over 15K miles in the last year without incident. I recommend this product. 352325

I am sending some pictures of my installation of the base plate and the wiring harness (TM783130) and the blue ox tow bar on my 2005 Honda CRV. It worked out OK although the instruction for the base plate ( BX2238) installation instructions could be improved some. Everything is installed and operational. Have towed the Honda 150 miles satisfactorily. Thanks for your interest. 468877

George, just finished install of blue ox base plate on my 2015 Buick enclave not for the faint of hand to install but all is well if u are good take your time some caution when drilling lower frame holes as inner holes are close but excellent fit and finish thanks for a great product 312252

Blue ox base plate is still great just a note for users you may need to lube the inside of the holes where the aluminum adapters for the tow bar connection is as one time I could not turn it to lock in for towing this solved the problem

Arrived earlier than expected and was exactly what I had ordered, fit like a glove. Service could not have been better. The salesperson really knew their product. I really saved quite a bit of money ordering through them. They emailed and called several times to make sure everything was as I had ordered. A great company to deal with. 615380

I've bought at least one other product from etrailer in addition to the base plate for my 2008 Jeep Liberty. The plate and appurtenances fit like a glove and work great. etrailer had the best price and, as before, kept me informed about when the product would be delivered and delivered on time. Great company. 486224

received the plate installed it in less than three hours, have yet to hook it up though. Great , fast shipping! The only issue were the cheap plastic push pins on the shield of the Jeep. 81899

Review from a similar Blue Ox Standard in Base Plates

Great product. Well designed and easy to install. Only difficulties during the installation are those plastic fasteners on vehicle-- suggest buying about six to have on hand for re-installation, as no matter how careful you are ...plastic is plastic, if you know what I mean. Very informative installation video that will assist anyone thinking of buying or installing this unit. If you're handy with tools, go for it! Note: I took the text from the video and created a simple instruction "list" for buddy and I to follow along, to be ensure we didn't miss any steps as pictures on actual instructions were not too useful. Also, the baseplate comes with a nice step bracket for easy break-away switch mounting, which was a plus. 225837

My third Blue Ox Base Plate. Fit and function are perfect. Fits my existing (first) tow bar and the tab height is nearly exactly the same as my 12 year older Jeep so didn't even need to make any draw bar changes. 111481

Still attached and working perfectly. Continues to survive some rather intense back country trails with no complaints.

Review from a similar Blue Ox Standard in Base Plates

Great base plate - -super service from etrailer. Couple of hints, at least for install on a 2012 Wrangler Unlimited: 1) the phillips push pins that hold the belly pan on come out best with a light touch on the driver. I buggered up 2 figuring that out. 2) the plate seems to be too narrow to fit, but with a rubber mallet and some persuasion, it will. 3) Use a corded drill for the holes into the frame. My 19.2 volt didn't have the grunt to get it done even with swapping out batteries repeatedly. 4) Directions don' t say anything about how to level the plate after the first (lower) bolt is in, but probably best to have it level or even slightly angled down or away from the grill (gives better clearance for the electric connection below the license plate frame). Wish the electrical connection had black spring return for the cover and the screws to mount it were black. Also wish Blue Ox didn't put a white part number label and the orange warning label on the FRONT, visible section of the plate. Why not the back? I installed it myself. Took half a day and 2 scraped knuckles, but not to tough of a job with the right tools. My third or fourth purchase from etrailer and all have been quick, reasonably priced, marked by good communication and respectful. Works for me! Thanks etrailer! 41767

Good fit. Instructions mis leading somewhat. 2018 Jeep JL does not have 7 metal screws holding bumper shields but plastic screws that need special tool to unscrew. I pulled them out and replaced with metal screws in reinstallation. After tow bar installation the lower plastic shield will require cutting to reinstall. I left this off and did not reinstall. Looks fine and save if towbar is removed later. Did by me self and took about 2.5 hours. 602635

Review from a similar Blue Ox Standard in Base Plates

I recently bought a Spark to use as a toad for my toyhauler. The next step was to select a baseplate, towbar, light system, etc. I wanted a baseplate that would be as inocuous as possible when not in use and be simple to connect and detatch. The Blue Ox 1725 seemed to fit the bill. I combined it with the Curt towbar and a Blue Ox adapter, which resulted in a nice clean and simple system. The staff at Etrailer went out of their way to answer my questions and to insure that my order was delivered quickly. Great service as always. The install went smoothly thanks to the great instalkation video. I am very happy with the way that it turned out. 560621

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2018 Chevy Colorado
  • There are a number of parts you're going to need in order to flat tow your 2018 Chevy Colorado, starting with compatible base plates. • Difference Between the Blue Ox Alpha and Avail Tow Bars
  • Both tow bars you referenced will work with the Blue Ox base plate kit part # BX1721 that you just bought. The biggest difference will be that the Avail part # BX7420 is designed to allow for better maneuverability in tight turns. This is accomplished by having longer arms than the Alpha # BX7365. The Avail also has a 10k capacity whereas the Alpha only has a 6,500 lb capacity. If you think you will need to make some tighter turns I would highly recommend the Avail.

Really, it's up to you and you should use the tool you are most comfortable with, though I will say a Dremel would probably make the best cuts.
