Speaker 1: Today on our 2017 Jeep Cherokee we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit with removable arms, part number BX1138. Here's what our base plate looks like once we have it fully installed. Now this is gonna allow us to hook up to our motor home on our tow bar and safely tow our Cherokee down the road.Our base plate has removable arms so when we're not towing our Cherokee we can pull on this pin here, rotate it, and then pull the arm out and it's very unnoticeable because it's gonna be hidden behind the grill and it's gonna have this nice black powder coat finish that blends in nicely. After you remove the arm they come with these plastic caps so we can put it inside the baseplate so it'll be nice and protected and keep any kind of debris from getting inside.The distance between our two brackets is gonna be 34 inches and the brackets themselves are gonna be 19 inches off the ground, which is a good measurement to know because you're gonna want to make sure that you're towing your Cherokee nice and flat when you're going down the road.Our Blue Ox base plate is gonna work with a wide variety of Blue Ox tow bars as well as some Roadmaster tow bars with an adapter that is sold separately. Our base plate is gonna be custom designed for our Cherokee so there's gonna be very minimal cutting or any kind of drilling that we're gonna have to do. Compared to the Roadmaster base plate our Blue Ox is gonna be a lot simpler of an installation with a lot less cutting and drilling involved.

It's gonna come with all the necessary hardware to get it installed. You will have to cut our a section of the grill here so that the arms can come through. They're gonna feature a safety chain connection point right next to our removable arms making it really easy to hook up your safety chains right here.Now that we've seen what it looks like and gone over some of the features let's show you how to get it installed. To begin our installation we're gonna need to remove this plastic cover that's over our radiator. Now there's gonna be several push pin fasteners holding it in place so you're gonna want to grab a flat head screwdriver or a trim panel tool to remove them.

Now there's a small notch in the push pins, if you come underneath that notch you're gonna pop out the center section of the push pin first, that'll take some of the tension off, and then we can remove the rest of it. There's gonna be a total of 12 of those push pins and once you have them all removed go ahead and pull that cover off and set it aside.On the front side of our fender here we're gonna have three bolts that we're gonna need to remove. You want to grab an eight millimeter socket and pull those bolts out. Then we'll remove the other three from the other side too. Now if we pull back the liner just to give ourselves a little bit of working room right here at the trim piece where it meets our fascia we're gonna have a seven millimeter bolt that's going up, you're gonna want to grab a seven millimeter socket and remove that bolt and we'll remove the other side as well.On the backside where our fender meets our fascia we're gonna have two bolts at the very corner here that we're gonna need to remove and if we look straight down right below that bracket there's gonna be another bolt that we're gonna need to remove, we're gonna be using a 10 millimeter socket to pull those out.

We'll go ahead and remove the other three on the other side as well. Now if we pull that liner back some more we're gonna come to the very corner where our fender meets our fascia and there's gonna be a bolt that's up in the wheel well behind the trim here. You're gonna want to grab a 10 millimeter socket and we can pull it out. We'll remove the other side as well.Now underneath the front of our vehicle we're gonna have this skid plate, we're not gonna need to remove it fully but we are gonna need to loosen it so it can come down enough so that the bolts we do need to remove come out all the way. We're gonna grab a 13 millimeter socket and just gonna loosen up these front bolts.

Then we come to the backside of the skid plate and there's gonna be four more bolts holding it in place and again we just need to loosen them, we don't want to take it all the way out. Now along the top edge here where the underbelly of the fascia is we're gonna be removing the silver head bolts that have the washers on them, there's gonna be two in the middle and then one on each side towards the outside. We're gonna be using a 10 millimeter socket to remove those bolts.Now at the front of where our wheel well this little deflector piece we're gonna have two plastic rivets that are in there, we're gonna need to drill those out. I grabbed a quarter inch drill bit, just gonna drill right in the center of those rivets. Now if the tip breaks off you're gonna want to reach behind there to get the rest of it out. Now if you're having trouble getting it out you can always just drill the rest of it out, get a pair of pliers, and pull it out. We're gonna need to drill both of them on each side.We come back to where our trim piece meets our fender and fascia we're gonna start at the very bottom, you're gonna want to reach behind it and now these are just held in by some plastic clips so you're gonna want to pull away, releasing the clips, and you're just gonna want to work your way up so that we can get behind the fascia and fender here. Once you have it pulled away on one side you can go ahead and do that on the other side as well. Now if we start right at the corner of our fascia here you're gonna want to kind of pull down and out, that'll release the clips here, and then we're gonna start working our way towards the center. It's not a bad idea to have an extra set of hands that way they can help you hold the fascia while we disconnect all of our fog lights and any other electronics.Now on the drivers side here we're gonna have this rather large plug. If we push on this black tab at the end it should be able to disconnect it and then we'll just need to remove this wire clip here holding it in place. Then we can set our fascia aside and make sure it doesn't get damaged.Now behind the fascia right below our bumper beam we're gonna have these frame extensions, there's gonna be three bolts that are holding it in place so we're gonna grab a 15 millimeter socket and we can remove those. There's gonna be one 10 millimeter head bolt that we're gonna have to remove as well. With that removed we'll go ahead and remove the other side as well. We're also gonna have to remove the two bolts on the bottom side of our bumper beam, again we're gonna be using a 15 millimeter socket. We'll go ahead and remove the other side as well.We can grab our main receiver brace, you want to make sure that that tab right here is facing towards the center of the vehicle. We're gonna line up the holes, the top two holes should line up with the bottom of the bumper beam, and the three existing holes that we removed the bolts should line up as well. We can take our factory bolts that we removed in the lower section we can go and get those in hand tight just so we don't have to worry about the main receiver brace falling down.We're gonna be replacing the two top bolts that go in the lower section of our bumper beam. We're gonna take one of bolts from our kit, followed by a lock washer, and then a flat washer. Before we install any of the bolts we're gonna take a little bit of Loctite, just gonna put a thin line on the threads and then we can thread it in. We'll line up the holes and then just loosely thread in the bolt then we can get the other one in as well. Once you get both of them started we're gonna come back with a 17 millimeter socket and we're gonna snug them up. We'll go ahead and repeat that on the other side.We're gonna have this support plate, that's gonna go on top of our bumper beam. We're gonna drop the bolts down through the top, we're gonna line them up with the main support brace so that they come down through the holes on either side of the bumper beam. Don't forget to put your red Loctite on your bolts. Then on the bottom we're gonna have some locknuts that we're gonna thread in place. We'll go ahead and do this on the other side as well. We're gonna reinstall the 10 millimeter nut and we'll do that for the other side as well.With all of our hardware in place I'm gonna come back with that 15 millimeter socket and snug up the factory extension bolts. Now with a 17 millimeter socket I'll come snug up the two bolts at the top of our bumper beam. We'll do that on both sides. I'm gonna come back with a torque wrench and I'm gonna torque down all my hardware and we're gonna find this specification in our instructions. You're gonna want to repeat that for all of your remaining hardware.Our base plate is gonna come with some permanent safety cables. Now the key to this is you want to make sure that your wrap it around the base plate but you also wrap it around the frame of the vehicle. I'm gonna go on top of my bumper right here and have it come down right here and then go over and across the bumper and we can hook our two ends together using the supplied inaudible 00:10:37. You're gonna want to hook one end on and you can slide the other end in place, just want to make sure you leave yourself enough room that you can tighten everything up. For now I'm just gonna tighten this by hand and then we can get the other side in place. Once you have them both attached you want to come back with a three-quarter inch wrench and you want to give it a good turn so it locks it in place and you don't have to worry about it coming loose. We'll do that for both of our links.Now on the back of our fascia we're gonna have this plastic cover right here on each end of our grill. There's gonna be two bolts holding it in place so we're gonna grab a seven millimeter socket and we're gonna pull those out. There's also gonna be a little plastic tab holding it in place, just take a flat head screw driver, gonna push in on the middle section there, we're gonna release the tab a little bit, and we can pull it out. Once you have the tab removed we can pull the entire plastic cover off. We'll do that for both sides.Now right here in the honeycomb section of the grill that's where our base plate is gonna be coming out on each side. We can either trim out the section that's gonna interfere with our base plate or we can just take out this entire honeycomb section itself, make it a little bit more uniform, that's what we're gonna do and I'm gonna be using a rotary tool. I'm just gonna go around the edge and cut out each little line so I can have just the honeycomb come out. Now once we have this section pulled out we can go ahead and clean up around the edges and cut the other side out as well. Our base plate kit is gonna come with a breakaway switch bracket which we chose to mount right here on our bumper beam with a bolt and nut holding it in place.We can go ahead and put our fascia back in place, just don't forget to plug in your electrical over on the drivers side. You may have to maneuver it a little bit and work around the base plate and make sure that it's coming out in the right spot. Now with our fascia back in place we can start work on getting all the hardware back in. Since we did drill out those rivets earlier our kit is gonna come with some replacement plastic rivets. You want to make sure that you drill out the hole large enough that you can get the whole rivet in place, you may have to reach behind the panel to line everything up and you're gonna want to use a plastic rivet gun. Once you have it set if you keep working at it should break but if it doesn't you can take a pair of cutters and cut the end of that off. We'll repeat that for the other three remaining holes. We'll put all our push pins and our radiator cover back in place.Now we can take our removable arms and we're gonna go ahead and insert it into our base plate. Now this little pull tab here you want to push in until it completely retracts, then you can rotate it, and you'll hear it lock into place. We'll go ahead and put the other one on. Now we're ready to hook up to our motor home and hit the road.That'll finish up your look at the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit with removable arms, part number BX1138 on our 2017 Jeep Cherokee.

  • I checked the instructions for Blue Ox base plates # BX1138 and have linked them below for reference. The instructions, under step 8, state to use the Red Loctite on all bolt threads. Since it does say all threads that would mean that any bolt used to install the base plates should have the Loctite.
