Video Transcript for Blue Ox Base Plate Kit Installation - 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Speaker 1: Today in this 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee we'll be having a look at and showing you how to install the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit with removable arms, part #BX1128.Now the reason you're going to want a base plate like this for your Grand Cherokee is that this will allow you to safely and easily hook up a tow bar to your vehicle so you can safely flat tow it behind a motor home. Here's what our base plate looks like installed. What's great about this base plate is that it's designed to work in the cutouts where your factory tow hooks would be on your vehicle. If your vehicle doesn't have factory tow hooks there is an area that you can follow to easily score out with a utility knife to remove it and have access to your removable arms. The way the arms work, you simply take the arm, have this tab at a horizontal angle, push it in and twist it 90 degrees, and it'll lock into place with the spring loaded pin. The way this pin works is it prevents it from rotating so you can't take out the arm and this is where your tow bar will attach to. When you want to remove it, simply pull on the pin, twist and you pull off the arm.To help keep dirt and debris from entering the socket we do have these included cups which just slide into place and it'll make it easy for you to reinsert your arms when you need to because it keeps all the road debris, and dirt, and whatnot out of there.

Just simply pull it out by the tab and your arm can go back in.Now what's great about this setup, compare to other options out there is that this does give you a nice clean look on the front of your Grand Cherokee when you're not flat towing. You can hardly tell that the vehicle has been modified in order to be towed behind a motor home. Now next to our removable arm socket, we have our safety cable or safety chain attachment point to go between your Grand Cherokee and your motor home. Now the base plate does come up with an electrical mounting bracket and a breakaway switch mounting bracket in order to install a tow vehicle lighting system and a braking system. Our customer already had his installed and we just installed the base plate for him.Now that we've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get it installed. To begin our install on the Jeep, we went ahead and opened her hood and we got in position underneath where the fascia meets the skid plate on the vehicle.

Now we'll have four clips just like this one that go across our fascia. In our application we only have three on this vehicle, you'll have four though. To remove these clips, we'll use a trim panel tool or a flathead screwdriver and remove the center section. Once you pop the center section out you can get underneath the entire clip and pull it out.Now in our wheel wells we'll have two plastic rivets that attach our wheel molding to your fascia. We need to remove these.

We'll take a drill and drill out the center of the rivet. See it'll pull it out. With it drilled, sometimes we have to use a trim panel tool to come in behind the rivet and pull it out it too. Now we can grab the wheel molding and pull it away from our fascia. With this removed, we also have a 10 millimeter fastener to remove. And in front of our tire we'll have a twist fastener.

The way these work is we just grab them, twist them 90 degrees, and then pull them out. Keep in mind everything that we do on one side, we'll repeat on the other. Now on top of our fascia right above our radiator, we'll have two more plastic push pin fasteners, one on each side. These are just like the ones that we had underneath.Underneath where our fascia meets we'll have three of these twist fasteners just like we had in the wheel wells. Go ahead and pull these out. Now if your vehicle's equipped with fog lights, you'll need to disconnect them. To do that you just pull back on your fender liner a little bit, you'll find the connector right here. There's a black tab on the bottom and a black tab on the top. The way these work, is you can use a flathead screwdriver to kind of pry the tabs down as you pull back. You can see the tabs here. Yeah, you just kind of pry down on them a little bit and it'll unlock it from the teeth that it catches on and you can pull it off.Now with an extra set of hands we're going to remove our fascia. We'll grab it at the corners where it meets our fender and pull away from the vehicle. And now we'll set it aside where it won't get damaged. Now since we need to remove our washer fluid reservoir in order to install our base plate, we need to drain it first. To do that we'll just grab our pump here and wiggle it on out. We have a pan underneath the vehicle to catch all the fluid. All right. Now that we have it drained and our pumps are already pulled away from the tank, we'll disconnect our level sensor by sliding this red tab towards the back of it then pressing down on the white tab and pulling to separate. Now pull all the lines away from the tank and the wires too.Now we'll undo the two eight millimeter screws that hold the washing model in place. We have one below our driver's side headlight and then one in the front on our core support. Now at the very top where our cap is for reservoir on our core support, we have a plastic push pin fastener which holds it up, we'll remove this fastener. All of the plastic pushpin fasteners that we've had so far work the same way.Now we can maneuver our washer fluid reservoir out of the vehicle. Now here's a tech tip, in order to get our base plate aligned properly where you won't have to use any of the extra washers to help shim it against our bumper beam, if we loosen the bolts on our bumper beam, it will allow it to go down a little bit, and this will make for much easier install of your base plate. So then we'll have two 13 millimeter bolts here to loosen. There's a 10 millimeter bolt right here, we'll just take this one all the way out. And this will allow our bumper beam to go up and down as necessary. Now since our vehicle isn't equipped with tow hooks, we're going to be utilizing these weld nuts here in the frame. If your vehicle has tow hooks you'll need to refer to the instructions on how to remove the tow hooks and what hardware to use. We'll be utilizing the 80 millimeter long metric in 10 bolts and we'll take our base plate arm here. There's these big open spots right here, this is where we'll insert our long wall pipe spacers just like that. Now I'm going to get our hardware ready that'll go through the bottom through these two holes here. We'll be using one of our 80 millimeter long metric bolts, a lock washer, and then our thick flat washer. And for every bolt that we'll be using to install our base plate, we'll be sure to put red Loctite on them. We'll get our base plate in position and we'll start with our front bolt first. Then I'll just get it started and we'll do the same for the back bolt. Now we'll take a reinforcement plate, this will sit in this general area right about here, over the holes that are in our bumper beam, and it'll just slide in just like that. Now we'll take our long standard bolt, three eights inch in diameter, lock washer, flat washer with our Loctite on, we'll go through the bottom of our base plate and through the wall pipe spacer, through the hole in the bumper beam and the hole in our reinforcement block, and we'll thread on our lock nut. We'll do the same for the other location on the other side of the arm.Okay with our hardware now started in the four locations, we'll now tighten it down. And now we'll torque our hardware to the amount specified in the instructions. Now these two holes here and here on the side of our base plate arm, this is where we're going to be using an inch and a half long three eighths bolt with a lock washer, and a flat washer, and handle nuts to secure this plate here to the side of it. Notice how this plate has a tapered edge and it follows the angle of our frame. We want to make sure we follow the angle of the frame. Don't flip it around like this and have it backwards or upside down.So I bent our handle nut to make it a little bit easier for us to handle and I'll line up with our hole. Once we have it lined up, we'll just hold it in place and we'll secure our plate to it. Okay, we got our bolt started on our handle nut now so we can do the same process for the back hole. Now we'll go ahead and snug these bolts down with both of them started and we'll go ahead and torque these too. Now we'll use a pair of dykes to cut off our excess handle nuts. These top two holes and our side support plate, we'll use them as a guide to drill holes through the lip of our frame extension here. We'll make a pilot hole first and then enlarge it to the appropriate size. Now we'll take our inch and a quarter long three eighth bolt with a lock washer and a flat washer, we've got our Loctite on both of these bolts. We'll go through the hole and we'll place nylon lock nuts on the other side. Now we'll torque these bolts to the amount specified in the instructions. We went ahead and repeated the same process to get our base point on, on the passenger side of the vehicle. Now that we have both sides in place we can re-tighten our 13 millimeter bolts that hold our bumper beam in place. Now you may or may not be able to get the 10 millimeter bolt back into place. If not, it's no big deal. We went ahead and attached our safety cables to our base plate using a click link. We wrapped them around the sub frame and we used a zip tie on each side to secure them so they don't rub at any moving parts or sources of heat. Now we'll reinstall our washer fluid reservoir and refill our fluid that we drained out. All right, now on our fascia we need to remove this section right here for our base plate to go through and depending on your model, we have a limited, on the limiteds you actually have to trim this section out with a utility knife or a rotary tool. Some other models, they actually just pop right out in the back and you don't have to worry about doing any trimming, you just remove it. I'm just going to trim right along the edge all the way around in order to get it out. We'll just score it with a utility knife and we'll just go over it a few times. Then we can push it through. All right, we'll do this on both sides. Now with an extra set of hands, we got our fascia and we're going to get it back into position. Okay, now we'll re-secure our wheel molding to our fascia using provided plastic rivets. You'll need to have a plastic rivet gun in order to do this. And that'll complete our look at and showing you how to install the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit with removable arms part #BX1128 on this 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

2013 Dodge Durango

I purchased a Blue Ox base plate, Air Force One braking system, and a light kit for my 2013 Durango. I could have not asked for an easier process with selecting and ordering, also the tutorials and videos were a great help in determining what was the best system for me . Everything arrived as planned and in great condition. This is not my first time using etrailer.com and my prior experience was equally good. 310653

After using the items I reviewed, about 6,000 miles, I am more than satisfied. The towing setup is easy to hook up and unhook and the braking system is second to none. All of the installation was completed by myself and a friend, both of us have a technical background him more than me and we found the videos of the installation extremely helpful.Thank you for following up and providing excellent products as well as support services.

The base plate was received even earlier than expected, which was fine with me. The instructions were good (but your youtube video was perfect). It is installed and ready to go. I have no doubt that the operation will be any different that the receipt and installation. Looking forward to hooking the Jeep to the motorhome and heading to AZ. 726785

Just installed and they fit great. We had tow hooks on our 2019 Grand Cherokee and there was no need to cut or trim any body work. The instructions did not address removing the skid plate, but this was very straightforward. We will have our first trip next Sunday. 697209

This is the second baseplate that we have purchased, one for our Silverado and now for our Grand Cherokee. The system is highly reliable and we look forward to the same ease of towing that we had with the heavier Silverado. One note of caution, when you disconnect from the towing vehicle, remove the draw bars. You could experience a new level of PAIN if you accidentally bump into them. 693353

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

This is the third Blue Ox Base Plate Kit I've purchased since buying a Monaco Coach in 2004. The first was for a Jeep Wrangler. The second was for a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The third is for a current model Jeep Grand Cherokee. This is by far the best buying experience I've had. The price was very competitive, the delivery was timely and best of all, Cathy T was very helpful when I needed advice on the replacement of my electric Umbilical cord and other accessories. There was no pressure, just suggestions. I don't know if I'll ever need to replace either the Coach or the Jeep, but if I do and need more towing equipment, I'll be back! 601956

This product is great but the instruction were lacking greatly. If it were not for youtube videos I may still be struggling to finish this job. After learning some tricks with the videos it took me 3 1/2 hours start to finish on my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. I am not a professional installer (first timer) but I am not a novice when it comes to autos and trucks by any means. I found this to be moderately difficult and not for the novice. The only negetive product comment I have is the need to trim the tow hook of the bumper cover for what could have been made to center in the opening without a need to cut the openings on one side. Sorry no pics. 198361

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

installation on a 2011 jeep grand cherokee wasnt too bad. the instructions should have included a note on removal of the front fascia wheel well bolt clip. you have to pry the fascia over the bolt clip. it will not just pull off. i used a 90 degree drill attachment to drill the upper frame mounting plates. my jeep had the tow hooks from the factory. the base plates fit well. i had to trim the "opening" very little where the base plates come through the fascia. great customer support from bob and carla 99609

I just ordered a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland and it comes with front tow hooks. Do you have baseplatebrackets that will adapt to a Demco tow bar that has pins and about a 3/4 plate with hole.

We have one set of base plates available for 2014 Grand Cherokee, part BX1128 from Blue Ox. They list this kit as compatible with Blue Ox Aventa, Aladdin, Alpha and Allure tow bars. I gave Blue Ox a call and was informed that you will probably also need the BX88151 adapter. Do take a look at those adapters to be sure they will work with your tow bar. We have the instructions for those linked on the page so you can preview that as well.

The Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles # HM56208 that you referenced will fit a 2017 Jeep Cherokee, but is not compatible with your 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee. A similar wiring kit that is confirmed to fit your Grand Cherokee is the Tow Ready # TR118821. This will operate in much the same way as the Hopkins # HM56208. To complete your flat towing setup you will also need a base plate kit, a tow bar, safety cables, a supplemental braking system, and most likely a...

Should you be able to flat-tow your Jeep, the first thing you will need is the appropriate base plate kit. The Blue Ox, # BX1128, is a confirmed fit for your Grand Cherokee and is virtually unnoticeable after install. You will...

  • How To Use a Blue Ox Tow Bar On a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee
In order to use a Blue Ox Tow Bar like the Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar part # BX7365 on a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee you will need the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit part # BX1128. The Blue Ox Base Plate Kit is a great option and installs rather easily with minimal modifications to the frame required. I have attached an install video of myself installing this exact kit as well. In order to complete your flat-tow setup you will also need some other items which I have attached for you below. Roadmaster...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee without Using a Crossbar
The Blue Ox tow bar and base plate systems don't require a crossbar. For a base plate kit you would want the part # BX1128. If you have a Roadmaster Blackhawk, Falcon, or Sterling tow bar you could use the adapter # RM-031 and you would be able to tow your vehicle with the above mentioned tow bar without a crossbar. Otherwise I would recommend going with a Blue Ox tow bar like part # BX7420. I attached an FAQ article on flat towing for you to check out as well.

  • Base Plate, Tow Bar and Flat Towing Equipment for 2014 Jeep Cherokee Latitude
For your 2014 Cherokee Latitude, you'd want to use the Blue Ox # BX1138 base plate kit in conjunction with the Blue Ox Alpha # BX7365 tow bar you referenced. The BX1128 and the 1427-3 are a fit for the Grand Cherokee only, and wouldn't work for your vehicle. You'll also need a taillight wiring and a supplemental braking system. The simplest wiring solution is the Roadmaster Magnetic Tow Lamps, part # RM-2120. A magnetic tow lamp system will remain completely independent of the wiring...

  • Options for Adding Lights to Flat Tow a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Behind a Motor Home
I do not have specific information on a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and diodes. The diodes simply act as a gate and gate keeper, letting the signals pass through one way so that it does not back feed and damage the electrical system. Another option is to use a light kit. We have several to choose from depending on how you want to mount them. I would recommend going with either the magnetic kit, # C-ATL20A, or the E-Z mount kit, # EZT20B. No drilling, no cutting and splicing wires are involved. I...

  • Can Blue Ox Flat Towing Setup from 2015 Chevy Malibu be Used to Flat Tow 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee
At the very least you'll be able to reuse the Blue Ox tow bar you have but the rest of the setup will depend on what you have to some degree. The base plate kit will need to be replaced for sure since those are vehicle specific. The braking most likely can be reused but it would either be a simple swap or a more involved one depending on the kit. This is also true for the wiring as well. If you can get back to me with all of the components you have I can then determine what best course...
