Video Transcript for Blue Ox Base Plate Kit Installation - 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Speaker 1: Today on our 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit with Removable Arms. Part number BX1128. This is what your base plate looks like when it's installed. You can see it's nice and tucked in inside the bumper here. It's not going to stick out too far. It has a nice powder coated finish to help protect from any rust or corrosion.

It's going to come with a plastic cap to go inside this hole here on your base plate. It's going to help keep the elements from getting inside. It is going to fit right inside of the slot where your vehicle may be equipped with tow hooks. They would come out of this section here, this would replace that. The removable arms are simple to install. Simply push them in.

Twist them and they lock in place. To take them out, pull the ring. Twist, slide out. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's show you how to get it installed. To begin our installation, underneath the front bumper you're going to have four push pin fasteners you're going to need to remove. In this case, this vehicle only has two of them installed, so what we're going to do is we're going to take a flathead screwdriver and you're going to pull out the center.

Once you pull out the center, you can pull the base out. You're going to do that with the remaining three. Right up here we're going to have a push pin fastener. It's going to be the first one to the front of the vehicle. We'll take a flathead screwdriver, and we're going to just separate that top piece from the bottom, and we're going to take a trim panel tool to pop it out the rest of the way.

Like that. You're going to do that same thing on the passenger side.Next we're going to take a 10 mm socket and we're going to remove this bolt. You're going to have two rivets that we're going to have to cut out. If you look at this bottom one here, it has a little tab sticking out the front of it. First thing we need to do is we need to cut them off. Next we'll take a small drill bit. We're going to drill out the center of them. We'll take a utility knife and you need to go in back behind this panel and we're going to cut the back of this off, so we can get it out. Go behind the panel and in between the wheel well liner, like that. You'll have this little handle nut if you will, you're just going to turn it, like that. Next thing we're going to do is on the inside of here you're going to have little tabs. Now this one's popping out, but if you can see here, they're flexible. If you reach up behind the wheel well liner, you'll be able to push them down and pull this out. At the top you're going to have some like this. If you can get in there with maybe a needle nose pliers and pinch these together, you'll get them out of the hole. Next we'll have two push pins here on the top, underneath the hood. Again, flathead screwdriver, pull up the center. We're going to have three turnstile push pins that we're going to have to remove across the underneath of the bumper fascia like that. Now with an extra set of hands we'll remove our bumper fascia. In this case we're going to have fog lights. You want to make sure you don't just pull the bumper fascia off. You want to unhook those as you're doing it. We're going to start on the outside and we're just going to slowly start prying it back. To pull these out we're just going to twist them and pull the whole bulb out. We'll take this and set it aside to be reinstalled later. You want to make sure you don't touch the bulb with bare hands. Now we'll take them out the rest of the way and we'll put our lights back into our fascia. We're going to take a flathead screwdriver, we're just going to pry up on our two ends like this. Just like that. We're going to do the same thing on the passenger's side. We're going to start removing our washer fluid bottle. On the neck here there's going to be a push pin fastener. Do the same thing, flathead screwdriver, we'll just pop out the center.Next what we're going to do is we're going to remove our rubber lines that run into the bottom of our box here. You're going to have one side that's going to push out the fluid. The other side will not. We're going to take just some rubber hose, I'm going to take out this side first. Put it in like that. We'll take off this other side and we're going to pull it off. Put your finger over it. Put the hose on like that. We'll remove our connections here. You're going to slide this red tab out, push down like that. This black tab right here on the top, what you're going to do is you're going to pull up on it and slide the top off. We'll just remove the wires on the inside of the box here and set them aside. We're going to have two screws to remove. We have one up here and we're going to have one down on the bottom. Use an 8 mm socket. You're going to have to kind of work it out at the top.Now we're going to put in our base plate. You're going to have two different size spacers. You're going to use the longer of the two. What we're going to do is right in the front side of the base plate there's two oblong holes. You're going to drop those in like that. Underneath the frame you're going to have two holes inside the frame that have weld nuts already in them. You're going to take the shorter of the two hex bolts. You're going to put on a split lock washer and a flat washer, we're going to slide our base plate into place. You want to make sure that the hook is in toward the inside of the vehicle. We're going to thread these into the weld nuts. You want to make sure that you use Loctite on all of your hardware.Next we'll take this plate and we're going to slide right on the inside of our bumper here. We're going to take the longer of our two hex bolts, again split lock washer, flat washer. We're going to come up through the bottom, through that spacer, through the top like that. We're going to take a locking nut, put it on top and you're going to have another one here on the outside. We'll tighten up our hardware. On our back two bolts we'll be using 11/16 socket. On our front two, we'll be using a 9/16 socket, 9/16 wrench. We'll take our handle nut or nut plate, if you will, these back two holes, we need to bend it to get our handle nut inside lined up. We're going to do this most forward one first, then we're going to take our plate and you can see that one end is tapered. You want the shorter end to go toward the front of the vehicle. It's going to follow the frame here. Then we're going to take our 3/8 by 1-1/2 hex nut, a split lock washer, and a flat washer, and we're going to thread it into our handle nut that we have inside of the frame. You want to make sure when you get this plate up, you want to be flush against your frame, so we're not going to tighten that right now.Now that we have this one in, we're going to take this and we're going to push it out of the way for now so we can get this back one in. We'll take another handle nut, bend it so we can get it inside the hole here, and take another 3/8 bolt by 1-1/2, split lock washer, flat washer, and we're going to thread it into the other handle nut. Next take a 3/8 drill bit and we're going to drill out these top two holes. I'm going to put 3/8 by 1-1/4" bolt, lock washer, flat washer, through this hole. Now the reason I'm putting this one bolt in first before I drill this hole, that's so my plate stays still. We're going to do the same thing for this hole. Then we're going to do the same combination. Use our 3/8 by 1-1/4", split lock washer, flat washer, and a lock nut and we'll install it on this hole. Next we'll take a 9/16 socket, 9/16 wrench, and we're going to tighten our top ones first. Then we'll tighten up our bottom ones. We'll torque down our hardware to the specifications in the instructions. We can cut off our excess here. I'm just going to use some tin snips. We're going to repeat that same process on the other side of the vehicle. The last thing we need to do to complete our installation of our base plate is to install our safety cable. We're going to take our ring like this, feed it through. We're going to take our safety cable. We want to go over the top. You want to make sure you're not wrapped around any hoses, pipes. You want to stay away from anything hot or moving. Zip tie that up there just to keep it from moving around. You're going to repeat that on the other side. Now that we have our base plate installed we can start reinstalling everything we removed. With an extra set of hands we'll reinstall the fascia. Keep in mind you want to rehook up your fog lights and we're just going to do it in reverse from how we took it off. This time we're going to start in the middle and work our way to the outside. Our plastic trim panel here, or piece here, is kind of rubbing up against our base plate, so what we're going to have to do is we're going to trim that just a little bit. I'm just going to notch it around this angle bracket here. I'm going to mark it with a paint marker. I'm only going to do about 1/2" on both sides. We're going to do that same thing on the other side of the vehicle.Next I'm going to take a Dremel tool with a cutting wheel. We'll notch this out and I'll take a razor knife, like this. Now we'll try fitting our fascia back on again. Again we need to hook up our lights. After test fitting again, we found out we need to trim just a little bit more. Now we'll reinstall our fog lights again. Your kit's going to come with four new rivets to replace the ones we took out. This rivet gun is not going to come with your kit, so you will need to pick one up.That will do it for the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit with Removable Arms. Part number BX1128 on our 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

2013 Dodge Durango

I purchased a Blue Ox base plate, Air Force One braking system, and a light kit for my 2013 Durango. I could have not asked for an easier process with selecting and ordering, also the tutorials and videos were a great help in determining what was the best system for me . Everything arrived as planned and in great condition. This is not my first time using etrailer.com and my prior experience was equally good. 310653

After using the items I reviewed, about 6,000 miles, I am more than satisfied. The towing setup is easy to hook up and unhook and the braking system is second to none. All of the installation was completed by myself and a friend, both of us have a technical background him more than me and we found the videos of the installation extremely helpful.Thank you for following up and providing excellent products as well as support services.

This is the third Blue Ox Base Plate Kit I've purchased since buying a Monaco Coach in 2004. The first was for a Jeep Wrangler. The second was for a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The third is for a current model Jeep Grand Cherokee. This is by far the best buying experience I've had. The price was very competitive, the delivery was timely and best of all, Cathy T was very helpful when I needed advice on the replacement of my electric Umbilical cord and other accessories. There was no pressure, just suggestions. I don't know if I'll ever need to replace either the Coach or the Jeep, but if I do and need more towing equipment, I'll be back! 601956

This product is great but the instruction were lacking greatly. If it were not for youtube videos I may still be struggling to finish this job. After learning some tricks with the videos it took me 3 1/2 hours start to finish on my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. I am not a professional installer (first timer) but I am not a novice when it comes to autos and trucks by any means. I found this to be moderately difficult and not for the novice. The only negetive product comment I have is the need to trim the tow hook of the bumper cover for what could have been made to center in the opening without a need to cut the openings on one side. Sorry no pics. 198361

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

installation on a 2011 jeep grand cherokee wasnt too bad. the instructions should have included a note on removal of the front fascia wheel well bolt clip. you have to pry the fascia over the bolt clip. it will not just pull off. i used a 90 degree drill attachment to drill the upper frame mounting plates. my jeep had the tow hooks from the factory. the base plates fit well. i had to trim the "opening" very little where the base plates come through the fascia. great customer support from bob and carla 99609

I just ordered a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland and it comes with front tow hooks. Do you have baseplatebrackets that will adapt to a Demco tow bar that has pins and about a 3/4 plate with hole.

We have one set of base plates available for 2014 Grand Cherokee, part BX1128 from Blue Ox. They list this kit as compatible with Blue Ox Aventa, Aladdin, Alpha and Allure tow bars. I gave Blue Ox a call and was informed that you will probably also need the BX88151 adapter. Do take a look at those adapters to be sure they will work with your tow bar. We have the instructions for those linked on the page so you can preview that as well.

  • What is the Correct Wiring Kit to Flat Tow a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • The Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles # HM56208 that you referenced will fit a 2017 Jeep Cherokee, but is not compatible with your 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee. A similar wiring kit that is confirmed to fit your Grand Cherokee is the Tow Ready # TR118821. This will operate in much the same way as the Hopkins # HM56208.
