Video Transcript for Review of Fastway Ball Mounts - Adjustable Ball Mount - FA94FR

Ellen: Hey everyone, I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com. Today we're taking a look at the Fastway Flash 2-Ball Mount. Now the unique thing about this system is that it's going to have a tongue weight scale built into the ball platform, so it's going to take the guesswork out of getting everything loaded up properly for your trailer to make sure that all the weight is evenly distributed as much as possible. It's a good idea of course, to make sure that that weight is evenly distributed over the axle in your trailers, that you're not loading down too much weight onto the ball causing issues in your tow vehicle. Those issues being things like decreased steering handling, decreased braking control, your headlights pointing up, all kinds of bad stuff. So by having everything nice and level, we'll be able to alleviate those issues.

Also, since this is going to be an adjustable ball platform, we'll be able to get that height where we need it to be to again, make sure that everything is sitting nice and level between our towing vehicle and our trailer. It also comes with the two different ball sizes, so again, it's going to eliminate the need for having multiple balls for multiple trailers. Should be a go to system to have just one set up for all of your towing needs. Let's take a little closer look at our system. The thing that I really like about this is that it's really easy to maneuver. It's machined really well.

It looks nice and as you're playing with it, it just is easy to use. That's going to be partially due to, again the machining, that's really nice, all of the edges are chamfers so they have a little bit of a bevel to them so everything moves together pretty nicely. But also the ball platform and the shank are going to be made out of a solid aluminum construction, so durable but still pretty lightweight so you can move them around without feeling like you're having to lift a bunch of weights or anything like that.So as you can see, I pulled that pin and clip and that allows me to switch from the drop to the rise position, get that height where I need it to be. Replaced my pin and the clip on the other side and then you're good to go.If you need to change out the different ball sizes, it's equally as easy. And see this little ring on the inside there So if we lift that up, pull out the pin, it's going to cause a nice ringing sound, but then that's going to let us pull our ball out and then we can switch it out for the other one.

Just line up the hole and then again replace your pin in the hole there. While I have this out though, can kind of see on the inside that there's a spring. That's how this mechanism works for that tongue weight scale, so there's a spring on the inside to give us that indication of what towing weight we're at. Of course right now it's going to be at zero, but as it goes up we'll go from zero to 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000. So as that weight comes down the ball, it's going to push that spring down and give you that quick, easy to read indication of where we're at.It's a little red dot there.

That's going to be what to look for. It's a pretty straightforward system and again, takes out that guesswork for figuring out what kind of ton weight you're working with. Place our ball, put that pin back in place, and then we'll get everybody back together here. Whenever you're putting that pin back in, you want to make sure you push it all the way so that it's sitting nice and flush. There's a little O-ring to keep out dust and debris, so you might have to kind of coax it into place. And I'm going to put this back in the drop configuration so we can take a look.So as far as the drop and rise that we're going to get out of this, our max drop going from the inside top edge of our receiver tube to the ball platform, that's going to be seven and a half inches. If we flip it over into the rise configuration, it's going to be nine inches. The height going from the bottom of the ball platform to the top of the shank is 11 3/8 inches. We'll have several different lengths to deal with. So our length from the hitch pin hole to the adjustment holes, going center to center is going to be five inches from the center of the hitch ball to the hitch pin hole, that's going to be eight and a half inches. And then from here from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the shank, that's going to give you about 3 5/8 inches. That's an important number to keep in mind, especially if you're putting this into the rise position because that's going to be how much clearance you have before your ball mount would make contact with the bumper on your vehicle. So keep that in mind there that you have about three inches before that would make contact. The overall length going from the very front to the very back of the shank, that's going to be 11 5/8 inches. Our adjustment holes are spaced an inch apart. The pin diameter for our hitch pin is going to be 5/8 of an inch. Now it does not come with a hitch pin, so you will need to get that separately and I'll tell you about one that you can find right here at etrailer.com. And then our shank is also going to fit into a two inch by two inch receiver. Now as I mentioned that's a pin that you can get to go with this. There is one from Fastway, that's going to be the partner where you see on the screen. It's just going to be a locking hitch pin for your two inch hitch to help protect this from any would be thieves and of course keep it attached to your hitch, so not a bad thing to pick up to go with your ball mount. As far as our towing weights, now we can talk about those. It's going to have a max gross towing weight of 10,000 pounds and a max tongue weight of 1,000 pounds. The important thing to keep in mind with those numbers though is you always want to go off of the lowest number of any component in your system, so that's going to include your hitch, your vehicle itself, and anything else in between including your pins and clips.Or clips usually have a weight rating, but your pin does. Anyway, you want to make sure you go off of the lowest numbers between those so that you're not overloading any component in there. You're only as strong as your weakest link, so that's something to keep in mind with this system. All in all, I think this is going to be a really nice accessory to use with your towing setup. As I mentioned, it's all chamfered, looks really nice, that aluminum construction, we don't have to worry about any kind of rust, still maintains its structural integrity, but still it's kind of light weight. It is made in the USA. The hitch balls are going to be a chrome plated steel, so those are still going to have the durability that we need to tow effectively. But that's pretty much going to do it for our look at the Fastway Flash 2-Ball Mount. I hope this video has been helpful in deciding that this is going to be the right setup for you. If not, we do have other options available here at etrailer.com so check them out. Thanks for watching. We'll see you next time.

Nicely polished with good final machine surfaces. High load rating. Not sure what Alluminum Alloy it is. My guess is 6061 or 7075. Nice product and quality in comparision to other aluminum mounts. Packaged well and arrived quickly. 180069

Review from a similar Fastway Flash in Ball Mounts

I have had this on my truck for over a year now with no issues. Works great and the spring loaded ball bearings keep the ballmount from rattling around in the hitch. I have towed an equipment trailer with a 7,500 lb tractor on it on several occasions with no issues. The only signs of corrosion are around the receiver opening where rust from the hitch has stained the aluminum. This could be eliminated if the ball mount was stored somewhere other than in the hitch. 109234

Good Looking and strong....just like I used to be. Perhaps the nicest thing is that the good people at etrailer were able to change our ship to location mid ship. Thanks very much for doing that. 129313

Very nice looking drop hitch, light weight and nicely machined and polished. The only thing I would improve is that the ball bearings for the anti-rattle feature do not extend far enough to work in my receiver (a Curt XD) but that is just my own personal truck. 86517

After owning this hitch for about a year I still love it. I put a quick change ball on it and it stays on my truck year round. If you care about the anti-rattle you might want to pass, the ball bearings came out within 6 months of use.

Thanks for the follow up. Diversi-Tech has changed the design of this style of ballmounts and has eliminated the ball bearings.

Aluminum Ball Mount This is an excellent ball mount. It is light weight, super strong, (14,000 lbs GTW rating), fairly inexpensive considering it's performance, and not to mention, it's super shiny and looks great on my new truck. It has handled my boss's landscaping trailer (7,000 lbs loaded) and his dump trailer (up to 12,500 lbs) without a single issue. One more thing with this being aluminum, I don't have to worry so much about it rusting in the winter time with the salt on the roads. Also the service from etrailer was A+. It was shipped out the same day I ordered it and arrived quickly. Thanks a lot guys for the great products and customer service. 3452

High tow rating and lighter than steel! 347176

Its good. Rattles a little. Miss the anti rattle bead. Wish they made an 8 as my 6 is just a bit to high. Makes putting the trailer on and off kinda difficult sometimes. Id by an 8 if they made it right now. All in all for the price its a great, light high rated ball mount.

Thanks for the feedback. We do not currently offer an 8 inch drop ball mount, but I have provided a link to our adjustable ball mounts that would cover this range for you.

Review from a similar Fastway Flash in Ball Mounts

This ball mount is top quality, aircraft grade, billet aluminum… and far nicer in appearance than I would've expected. It is obviously CNC machined, and highly polished afterwards. This ball mount is also surprisingly light in weight, considering it is milled from a solid piece of aluminum bar stock. Another positive point to this type of construction method is that there are no welds to fail. This tough mount will no doubt outlast my truck, and can handle 4300 lbs. more tow capacity than my vehicle's gross towing capacity! It will be a real shame the first time I overshoot my trailer and gar this beautiful ball mount, but it is bound to happen. The "anti-rattle" ball-type tensioners are a nice touch, which quiet down the hitch while trailering, or on rough roads. I highly recommend spending a little more than you would for a painted steel ball mount, and purchasing this solid aluminum beauty instead. It will look nicer for much longer, won't corrode, and conducts electricity, (for those of you whose trailer plugs aren't wired with a ground, and rely the ball to coupler contact to complete the ground between your tow vehicle and trailer, you won’t have to file off any paint to get a good ground contact). Bottom line: this is a great product; etrailer.com has friendly and knowledgeable customer care staff, who offer fast, first-class service and shipping. I will definitely do business with etrailer.com again. Thanks so much! Joseph in Ojai CA. 117094

Comments
Just a quick note, grounding through the ball and mount is not a great idea, especially with aluminum. Aluminum is not a great electrical conductor to begin with, but in applications where weight is a concern it is used. Back in the 60s, they tried using aluminum wiring after in residential construction, but quickly went back to copper when prices came back down. Furthermore, these ball mounts are highly polished, but left in the white. Aluminum will not rust or corrode, but the surface will oxidize. Over time you will notice it is not as shiny as when new. That haze is surface oxidation that will further inhibit electrical conduction. And of course, as the ball mount moves in the hitch, ground connection can become erratic. A good copper wire ground is always best way to ground a trailer.

Love it. Light weight yet 2000lb tounge weight. Just mounted a new ball, perfect fit in 1" hole. Bought the new ball bearing locking pin sprayed a little silicone inside lock before locking my new hitch to truck. All very nice. Will likely buy another to mount a larger ball so i don't have to swap balls. Was concerned the locking pin would be too short but there is 1/4" extra length, just fine. 285888

After about 1.5 - 2 years of of daily use this Ball mount failed big time. I was driving about 35 mph and the ball mount broke at the ball opening. My trailer detached and was dragging behind my truck. ball mount is fine if you don't use it a lot I guess. I will not buy again. 241714

No problems, works great. And added bonus: My Tundra was rear ended by a Camry. Camry totaled by hitch, hitch not a scratch!
JMcQ - 10/11/2019

Thanks for the follow up and reply. With all rear end collisions involving ball mounts, hitch accessories, and trailer hitches it is best to replace all the components involved in the incident. IT is possible that there could be small cracks that aren't readily visible to the naked eye that could adversely affect the capacity, and capability of the hitch on your Tundra. Additionally, it might be worth it to have the attachment points of your hitch to your Tundra inspected to make sure there is no damage to the frame of your Tundra.

This ball mount not only looks good, but it functions very well. I have had no problems with it whatsoever. I use a stainless ball which I purchased from etrailer and it too works very well. I switch this ball mount and ball between my F-150 and a Jeep Rubicon and it works perfectly for both pulling two very different kinds of trailers. I do not keep it on either vehicle very long after use as it tends to attract attention and I don't want someone trying to steal it or other items from the vehicle. 567055
