Video Transcript for Fastway Ball Mounts - Fixed Ball Mount - DTLBM9400 Review

Today, we'll be reviewing part number DTLBM9400. This is the self-locking aluminum ball mount from Fastway Flash. It's a solid, one-piece ball mount with a built in drop, or rise that's going to let you match the ball height of your vehicle with the tongue height of your trailer. It's going to feature the convenient, self-locking system that's going to lock the ball mount to the receiver tube. The built in locks are a great feature to have, because they can't get lost, like other kinds of hitch locks. The lock seals are going to be double sealed to help keep out water. It's also going to resist corrosion, and they don't require any maintenance.

They have that nice dust cap there, so it's going to protect the lock core. It's going to come with two keys. The keys go into that lock here on the front and when you rotate it, it's actually going to bring the pins in. Which is going to allow this portion to slide into your 2 inch by 2 inch trailer hitch receiver. Once you push it in and get your pin holes lined up with one another, you can rotate the key to the out position.

It's going to push the pins into the pin holes of the hitch and it's going to lock the mount to the hitch. We'll go ahead and push the pins back in. That way, it's ready for our installation. Again, it's going to come with 2 keys. The keys are going to use a unique, pick-resistant, tube style design. Again, the ball mount is machined from a solid, one piece aluminum.

It's going to be very light weight, and very strong. It also avoids welds, which can cause weak points that may break over time. The entire unit has a really nice, polished finish on it, so it's going to create a high quality appearance. It is designed for 2 inch by 2 inch trailer hitch receivers. If we take a measurement of the ball hole diameter, that's going to give us a measurement of an inch and a quarter. Keep that in mind when choosing the hitch ball and the size of the shank. The towing capacity is going to be rated at 14000 pounds with a tongue weight capacity of 2000 pounds.

If we take a measurement from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of where the ball mounts, that measurement is going to measure 8 1/2 inches. When used in the rise position, you want to make sure you have enough clearance between the rear most part of your vehicle and the upright portion of the mount. If I measure to the base of the curve, right where it starts that upward motion, or that upward angle, that's going to give us a measurement of about 4 inches. With it installed in the drop position, which will be this position here, it's going to offer a maximum drop of 4 inches from the top of the ball platform, to the inside top edge of the receiver tube of your hitch. If you use it in the rise position, doing that same measurement, it's going to give you a maximum rise of 3 inches. The distance that we have from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the shank is going to give us a measurement of 1 3/4 of an inch. It's a really simple installation. All you have to do is slide it into the receiver tube of your hitch. Make sure that the pin holes are lined up with one another. Then rotate the key, so that it pushes the pins, so they engage the pin holes in the hitch, and then close the dust cap, to protect the lock core. That's going to be locked inside the hitch. That's going to do it for today's review of part number DTLBM9400. This is the self-locking aluminum ball mount from Fastway Flash. .

This hitch was better than expected. Bright, well-built, heavy, solid, and precise are words that come to mind when describing this product. Combined with a stainless steel ball and you have yourself a real winner for a rust-free system. Fortunately, this thing can be locked. It's also easy to unlock and remove. The spring-loaded ball bearings on top seem to help with rattle as well. Overall, I would highly recommend this product to anyone who wants the best and has the money to pay for it. 88022

After about 7 months, the lock that locks and releases the pin to the receiver was completely frozen stuck, and the key to the lock twisted off (pretty flimsy). After re-lubing the pin and lock again, twisted the other key off. i had to mangle the lock to get it off of my truck, and unit is now completely worthless... 404043

Perfect for the Subaru Crosstrek. You do not have to crawl under the vehicle to put the safety pin in place. This ball mount is also very light weight and does not rust. 409316

I ordered this because even though mine wasn't broken I wanted a bullet aluminum one. No welds. Good looking, solid, and weighs a lot less than my last one (which is steel). I will begin to put it through the rigors of my towing starting tomorrow. Glad I found this product. 304769

Review from a similar Fastway Self-Locking in Ball Mounts

I previously purchased this product for a 2" receiver and was very pleased with it as I formerly kept five hitches in my truck for five trailers - each was a different height and one was a 2 5/16 ball with the others being 2". Consequently, I went from hauling around about 75 pounds of hitches to one at about 15 pounds - plus, being aluminum, it had greater load capacity and looked a lot nicer than the steel hitches. My new truck has a 2 1/2" (class V) receiver and the former hitch cam operated lock pins did not come out far enough to engage the receiver when an adapter was used; hence, the need to buy another one rated for 2 1/2" receivers. The new one arrived and it was a 2" hitch with extended pin lengths and an adapter to make it fit a 2 1/2" receiver. Unfortunately, the adapter was off center and I was unable to insert the unit into the receiver on the truck. There are two screws that affix the adapter to the hitch insert and after about an hour I was able to get the new hitch/adapter to fit my receiver using one of the two screws to get the sleeve and hitch lined up properly and discarding the second screw which would have caused further misalignment. While not very happy about the latter, I am pleased with the result. I would strongly suggest that the manufacturer have some type of quality control as it was very apparent to the naked eye that the sleeve and hitch were not properly aligned. As far as Etrailer, they have always been great to deal with and offer all kinds of support. I have been purchasing equipment from them for many years. 340339

Comments

After a year the hitch has worked well. Recently I was in VA with freeing rain then below freezing temperatures. I had to reverse the balls due to what I had to tow. To my surprise the locks had not frozen and worked as designed. Regarding salt exposure, I reside in Florida and after my trip to VA my vehicle was covered with salt. I used Salt Away for boats coupled with a nozzle. The unit is similar to a hose mounted liquid fertilizer applicator and allowed me to thoroughly clean the nooks and crannies including the hitch. It will not damage paint and is supposedly environmentally friendly.

Great solid hitch but the lock is poor quality. I left it on the truck for several months (with lock protection cap on) and one day I went to remove. Found lock tumbler had shifted and was unable to insert key to remove. Had to drill out lock to get ball mount off the truck. I know have a $80 aluminum paper weight. 591181

This is solid. But also surprisingly light. Installed easily and locking mechanism is very smooth. Wish it came in anodized black: my only complaint. Feels like a value at the etrailer price. I am using on an Audi Q7 so have it flipped over so as to get a 1" rise. 450854

The key driven locks look questionable at first, but they hold just as solid as the pins. I don't think I have pressed it's limits with my power dump trailer, but it definitely meets my needs. I generally hook it up to the top 2" receiver on my torklift 20k receiver. Works great. Feels substantial! 550239

First of all I received my order lickity split. Thank You! When I opened the Ball Mount, I used the key and turned it to see the pins slide in. One side slightly moved. The key turned but no response. After working it for what seemed a long time, and pushing with my thumb it now works. But I am still a little skeptical of it. Hard to imagine that little amount of pin on both sides will hold 10,000 lbs. Otherwise, it looks really nice and I just used it to tow a single Seadoo and trailer and it held. The true test will be the big trailer. Sherry:) 63724

Well, I still love the Ball Mount, even thou the first time I took it off the little barrings with the springs, which I believe is the rattle control fell out. Did nt bother to stick them back in since it would happen again. I chased them down the driveway. I have a bolt on the underside of my receiver that I tighten which keeps any rattle happening. I had that installed. It pulls the trailer with no problem. Thanks, Sherry:

Thanks for the follow up Sherry. I am happy to hear that you do have an anti-rattle device that is working well for you. I also wanted to let you know that Diversi-Tech has redesigned this adjustable ball mount. The new design no longer includes the anti-rattle balls that you chased down the driveway.

High quality hitch. Very easy to use. I really like that it is one key for the lock and the adjustment. Really good looking hitch. Price is really good when you price out lock/ball/receiver and this one is adjustable with one key for all. This is our second one purchased after we tried the first one out. 208590

Review from a similar Fastway Self-Locking in Ball Mounts

This is my third DT (FLASH) Draw Bar. All three are in service. They are light weight but have higher GTW capacities then heavier draw bars. The four star rating is due to a couple things: 1) the shank on this Lastest purchase (from Flash) is not completely polished when set in the rise orientation. I used SemiChrome and a buffing when to finish the job. All draw bars fit a little loose in the receiver, especially the DT8200 model causing some rattling and clunking when pulling an unloaded trailer. I resolved this issue by drilling n taping the second hole that was in the receiver side ahead of the lock pin hole and wrenching the draw bar down n to the side. Rock solid now and no more clunking. It's a quite set up. The secure lock is easy to use and is theft proof. 525112

Comments

Still loving the set up. Still looks like new. Make sure you weld a 1/4 plate or nut to the outside of the receiver if you plan to tap and wrench a bolt into the side of the receiver like I described in my previous review. It eliminates the slop but the treads will strip out over time if you dont provide for more bolt threads to be captured when wrenching down the bolt to remove the play in the draw bar. Be aware that the steel bolt WILL wear a spot on the draw bar over time. I stopped using the bolt and purchased a U-bolt and plat to clamp the outside of the draw bar to the receiver to eliminate up/down play. This set up is better because it doesnt damage the side of the draw bar but provides a secure noise-free towing experience. Some guys may not be bothered by the clunking noise when stopping and starting but it drives me nuts. Thumbs up if it doesnt bother you :-

I have not had a chance to use the ball mount yet but it is easy to use and fits receiver with no issues. I recently purchased a Curt class V receiver that is installed below my OEM receiver. With the drop installed in the Curt receiver in the upright position, the back of the ball mount comes very close to the bumper on my 2011 Ram 2500 crew cab. I will see if there are any contact issues when actually towing and revise my review, if necessary. 114259

Comments

After using the hitch for six months, with the Curt receiver, I found it does contact my bumper when positioned at that height, causing scrathes. I also find that I can not unlock the receiver pins without having to tap pretty hard on the pin ends.

Both products are working well. I initially had a problem with the ball mount, which you promptly followed up on, giving me the Diversi-Tech support number. After talking to the rep and following a couple of his suggestions, the mount is now working well.

I have owned 2 of these hitches. First one lost when I had a hitch pin fall out of a 2 1/2" adapter...fortunately not towing! The hitch is easy to adjust, very durable, looks nice and is well engineered for towing. Finer points that need attention: 1. rubber caps over cylinder locks have a tether to prevent loss that never allows the rubber cap to fit back in place...ever. It's a design flaw. New out the box, the cap won't fit back into place after you remove it the first time. Expect to have to always have to secure the rubber caps or just cut it off. 2. The anti-rattle spring loaded ball bearings are not effective. I have used this hitch in over a dozen vehicles and none have had hitch openings tight enough to allow the anti-rattle bearings to be effective or make contact. The hitch will rattle, always, unless you use some metal shims or tape with duct tape around the draw bar. 3. If you try to adapt the 2" draw bar to a 2 1/2" hitch, it puts the hitch about 3-4" farther back away from the truck. This could be a problem from the standpoint of hitting your shins on the bar, to putting your load farther back, to decreasing your rear clearance. 4. Spending this much money on a hitch, I typically go through 2-4 vehicles with the same hitch and they all have different size hitches. If you buy the 2 1/2" size draw bar with the cylinder lock, it's only good for a 2 1/2" hitch. Not good if you try to back convert to a 2" hitch or use it in one of your buddy's 2" receivers. If you buy the 2" draw bar, you can purchase the $50 adapter to use in either a 2" or 2 1/2" hitch size. 103332

The hitch is very versatile for multiple trailer heights. The quality of finish is very good. The only drawback is there is up and down play in the receiver were the hitch locks in. This causes some hitch noise when braking due to the play. Locking feature means no theft. Over all a very good buy and worth the extra price 91819

Love the way it looks. However there are to many moving parts. the fit of the ball support bracket to the vertical slide shaft is loose and allows to much movement. Because the alluminum is soft I am already seeing wear on the spline. Also was loose fit into my receiver. I had to add a set screw to keep it tight in the sleeve. At this rate I expect I will have to replace it within 5 years. Great product if you don't haul heavier loads or if you do not use it very often. I would not buy it again. 572998

I'm a very picky buyer; like to research everything - and I also don't have a problem with paying a little more for quality - and for this aluminum ball mount that meant the polish/look of the mount, and even more important the quality of the locking mechanism. This product doesn't disappoint. I have no doubts this mount will take as much punishment as steel mounts and look 10 times better over time. I also appreciate having the integrated locking mechanism - cleaner look, in fact someone came up to me and told me they thought I'd forgot to but the bolt in it. So it looks great, does the job = all expectations met! 543582

So far so good. Only had the hitch for 2 wks. Upgraded my tractor hauler truck and trailer so why not the hitch as well. Looks to be very solid construction. As to the locking mechanism I am pleased I chose the barrel keys. Easier to keep clean (dirt roads) and spending this $$ on hitch I lock the design. Other hitches have been stolen when they beat the lock bar off the receiver. 179248

Very strong, easy to install and very secure. Yes a bit pricey, but well worth the money. I did notice there was what I thought was an unusual amount of play in the receiver. I called etrailer and Marcia was so very helpful and very concerned that I may have received the wrong product. She even called the manufacturer and found out what the changes that were made by the manufacturer which made the pictures incorrect. My hat is off to Marcia and all the folks at etrailer 130643

Good Morning Patrick I just love the hitch for several reasons. It works flawlessly to start with and I am able to adapt to almost any trailer I choose to pull. It is definitely a plus being able to move the hitch to adapt for proper levelling. I have a lot of people just stop and look at the hitch when I am in parking lots, and a time or two they have asked me where I got it. The only downside is the fact that while people see it, so does my back up alarm...

I was really looking forward to the simplicity of an all in one mount and locking pin system. I'm not sure if I got a Friday afternoon product or what, but I ended up returning the ball mount due to poor quality machining. The rounding of the corners of the shank was off by up to a 1/16" leaving some sharp edges and less than ideal contact surfaces with the receiver. I'm not a machining expert, but sure looks like it was misaligned when placed in the machine to do the rounding. Then it looks like someone still tried to polish the resulting work as a couple of the bad edges had been slightly smoothed. Then somehow this got past quality control and out the door. Does not instill confidence in their manufacturing process, quality control and monitoring, or belief in what constitutes a deliverable quality product. I expect better for $100+. Etrailer was great about accepting a return and refunding me. Kudos to them. 688118

I have had this trailer mount for a year in Fort Myers, FL. No rust and no concerns at all. I have towed with it about 10 times, various trailers up to 4,000 pounds. 641766

This is a premium ball mount with premium quality. I now have two and I’m very pleased with their appearance, durability and security. A little aluminum polish once a year makes them shine like new. 634400

Review from a similar Fastway Self-Locking in Ball Mounts

Just received my hitch. This is actually the 2nd one, of the exact same hitch. Hate to have had to spend the $ on it twice, but here's why the 1st didn't last. It's an AWESOME hitch! Looks great, versatile, and tough as stone. Tow my 21 foot wakeboard boat constantly with a lifted Silverado. Have pulled the skid steer several times with it also. Enclosed utility trailer (21 ft), no problem! Quick and easy to go from 2" to 2 5/16. LOVE the 2.5 receiver shank, no more sleeves!!! BUT, I live in snow country. If you use it in the winter, make sure to lube the mechanism's that move. After a few years, got really tough to actuate the locks, and finally the key lock broke. I'm sure if you squirt some WD40 in there, that won't be a problem. I just got lazy, and that's usually when you brake things lol! And it has a different tag on it than before. It used to be made by diversi tech. But I've looked at them side by side, they're the EXACT same hitch. Just must've gotten bought out by someone. But you'll love the hitch! People will check it out, and nobody can steal it! 615213

Do you have a question about this Ball Mount?

  • Choosing the Correct Aluminum Hitch Ball For 2004 Ford Ranger
  • The Curt Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver # 13138 is certainly the hitch I recommend for your 2004 Ford Ranger so that the spare tire can remain stored under the vehicle. To choose the correct ball mount for your truck and trailer, it is best to measure from the top inside of the hitch receiver to the ground and from the bottom of the coupler lip to the ground. The difference in these measurements will tell us what rise or drop we need in a ball mount. Since you don't have the hitch...

  • Differences Between the Diversi-Tech Ball Mounts DTLBM9400 and DTLBM8400
  • The difference is the ball hole diameter. The # DTLBM8400 has a 1 inch ball hole diameter and the part # DTLBM9400 has a 1-1/4 inch ball hole diameter. Aside from that they are completely identical. I attached review videos for both ball mounts for you to check out as well. If you check out the related items section of the product page of each ball mount you will see the different size hitch balls confirmed to fit each ball mount.

  • Replacement Key Recommendation for Diversi Tech Ball Mount DTLBM9400 Solution
  • If you lost the key and don't know the key number on your # DTLBM9400 you would need to re-key the coupler with part # DTLBM02RK which would give you new lock cores and matching keys.
