Video Transcript for Fastway Self-Locking, Adjustable 2-Ball Mount Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the fastway self locking line of adjustable two ball mounts. So, if you're looking for an easy to use, versatile ball mount, our fastway self locking ball mount, is going to be able to adapt to several different trailers, keep everything secure without any extra components, and look good while doing it.If you tow multiple different trailers, chances are they're going to have a different coupler size, or they're going to have a different tongue height. So, we're going to have to switch out our ball mount. That can become a hassle, especially if we tow so many different trailers in any given day.Well, our fastway ball mount's going to take care of that, because we're going to be able to switch our height, because it's going to be adjustable. But it's also going to give us two different ball sizes. Our ball mounts are going to come in a lot of different configurations, we're going to have some that are going to be available for the two inch receiver tube like we have here. But some also available for the two and a half inch receiver tube. And they're going to have varying different drops and rises that way you can pick one that's going to work with all of your trailers. Now, one thing that you're really going to appreciate about this, is that it's going to have self contained locks.

We're going to have this rubber grommet here, that's going to have a plug over our lock cylinder, so it means we can just lift it open. And you'll notice that we're going to have a tubular key, so we're not going to have to worry about it being picked. But if we unlock our ball, we can slide it up or down to get the appropriate riser drop. And then if we remove it, you'll notice that we're going to have another lock core right on the base here. Now, this is going to be used so we can lock our ball mount directly to the receiver tube. And if you watch, you can notice that the pins are going to go in.

So, we're not going to have to worry about losing our lock, because it's going to be self contained inside the ball mount. We can simply just slide our ball mount in place, line up the pin holes, and then rotate our key, until those pins extend out. And you can see that's not going anywhere. So, we'll make sure that pin is in all the way. And slide our ball mount on, then we can rotate the key, until we get it into the slot, and it will lock it in place. Now, our ball mount's not going to go anywhere, and we're not going to have to worry about anybody stealing it from our receiver, or taking the ball platform. And for extra piece of mind, to make sure that you have the ball mount in the correct spot, it isn't just hung up.

The key itself is not going to come out until it's fully in the locked position. So, even if I get it half way and the key is turned, it's still not going to come out, because that pin hasn't fully inserted. But once it does, the key will come out. Each one of these notches in our ball mount here is going to be in one inch increments. So, right now, we have them in rise position. And if we need to go up say two inches, we can just go up two notches, and that will give us a two inch rise.

And the same thing if we we're going down in the drop position. Each one of our ball mounts is going to come with a total of four keys, and both sets of keys are going to work with both the locks. With the locks being right on front of the shank here, and on the side of the ball platform, it's going to make it a lot easier than trying to get underneath the hitch here, messing with the pin and clip, or locking device, and it's one less thing that we have to worry about misplacing. Because our locks are going to be internal, and they're going to be sealed off from any kind of dirt or debris, so we don't have to worry about them getting damaged. Each one of our ball mounts is going to be made out of a solid piece of aircraft grade aluminum, so we're not going to have to worry about any weak points, because there's no welds in them to break. So, they're going to be nice and strong, and durable, but yet lighter weight than steel versions. Our ball mount right now we have in the drop position, but you can flip it over and put it in the rise position. In case you have a trailer that's taller than the other, so we can get a little bit more height, or drop for whatever we need. Now, each one of them's going to have two different balls on it, we're going to have a two inch ball, and a two and five sixteenths inch ball. And switching them's going to be just as easy as adjusting the height, we simply unlock it, flip the ball platform over, to whichever ball we need. And when it comes to the trailer balls themselves, we're going to have two different options. We'll have the version we have here, which is gonna be a steel, chrome plated ball, which is your typical trailer ball. And then we're going to have the stainless steel version. Now, these are going to be made out of a 303 stainless steel, and they're going to be extremely rust and corrosion resistant. It's going to be really good for marine applications, or anywhere that has a lot of moisture, even humidity, so we're not going to have to worry about rust. And that is another big benefit of the aluminum ball mount, it is going to be rust and corrosion resistant, so we know it's going to have this nice, polished mirror finish for a long time. Now, since our ball mounts are going to come in a variety of different configurations, the shank size, and the ball size, is going to make a difference on how much it can handle. So, whenever you're towing, you always want to double check your hitch, as well as the vehicle's owner manual, and go with the lowest rating.Being able to adjust the ball mount up and down, is nice, but if we don't know how much of a drop or rise we need, it doesn't do us much good. So, we'll show you how to measure for the appropriate riser drop for your trailer. You're going to want to measure from the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening, you're gonna make sure that your tow vehicle is nice and flat and on level ground whenever you make your measurement. So, right here, we're getting right about 17 inches. Now, we can come to our trailer and again, you want to make sure that your trailer is nice and level. So, we have our trailer chalked. And we'll come up to the coupler, and we'll measure from the ground to the bottom edge of the coupler here. Which I'm getting right about 21 inches. So, there is about a four inch difference. But since my trailer is higher, I'm going to want a four inch rise. So, we'll take our ball mount, we'll make sure that the pins are all the way in, and since I need a rise, I'll put it in the rise position. Slide it in the receiver tube, line up the holes and turn the key and lock it in place. And we can grab our ball platform, and again, open up the plug, take our key, make sure that pin goes all the way in. Pick the appropriate ball for your trailer, we'll slide it down close to where we need it. And once we have it lined up, we can turn the key and replace the plug. So, now we can go and double check our measurements, make sure we're pretty close to that 21 inches, and we are. Now, all we have left to do, is back up and hook up to our trailer. That'll finish up your look at the fastway self locking line of adjustable two ball mounts.

Review from a similar Fastway Self-Locking in Ball Mounts

This is my third DT (FLASH) Draw Bar. All three are in service. They are light weight but have higher GTW capacities then heavier draw bars. The four star rating is due to a couple things: 1) the shank on this Lastest purchase (from Flash) is not completely polished when set in the rise orientation. I used SemiChrome and a buffing when to finish the job. All draw bars fit a little loose in the receiver, especially the DT8200 model causing some rattling and clunking when pulling an unloaded trailer. I resolved this issue by drilling n taping the second hole that was in the receiver side ahead of the lock pin hole and wrenching the draw bar down n to the side. Rock solid now and no more clunking. It's a quite set up. The secure lock is easy to use and is theft proof. 525112

Still loving the set up. Still looks like new. Make sure you weld a 1/4 plate or nut to the outside of the receiver if you plan to tap and wrench a bolt into the side of the receiver like I described in my previous review. It eliminates the slop but the treads will strip out over time if you dont provide for more bolt threads to be captured when wrenching down the bolt to remove the play in the draw bar. Be aware that the steel bolt WILL wear a spot on the draw bar over time. I stopped using the bolt and purchased a U-bolt and plat to clamp the outside of the draw bar to the receiver to eliminate up/down play. This set up is better because it doesnt damage the side of the draw bar but provides a secure noise-free towing experience. Some guys may not be bothered by the clunking noise when stopping and starting but it drives me nuts. Thumbs up if it doesnt bother you :-

Perfect for the Subaru Crosstrek. You do not have to crawl under the vehicle to put the safety pin in place. This ball mount is also very light weight and does not rust. 409316

Great solid hitch but the lock is poor quality. I left it on the truck for several months (with lock protection cap on) and one day I went to remove. Found lock tumbler had shifted and was unable to insert key to remove. Had to drill out lock to get ball mount off the truck. I know have a $80 aluminum paper weight. 591181

This is solid. But also surprisingly light. Installed easily and locking mechanism is very smooth. Wish it came in anodized black: my only complaint. Feels like a value at the etrailer price. I am using on an Audi Q7 so have it flipped over so as to get a 1" rise. 450854

High quality hitch. Very easy to use. I really like that it is one key for the lock and the adjustment. Really good looking hitch. Price is really good when you price out lock/ball/receiver and this one is adjustable with one key for all. This is our second one purchased after we tried the first one out. 208590

First of all I received my order lickity split. Thank You! When I opened the Ball Mount, I used the key and turned it to see the pins slide in. One side slightly moved. The key turned but no response. After working it for what seemed a long time, and pushing with my thumb it now works. But I am still a little skeptical of it. Hard to imagine that little amount of pin on both sides will hold 10,000 lbs. Otherwise, it looks really nice and I just used it to tow a single Seadoo and trailer and it held. The true test will be the big trailer. Sherry:) 63724

Well, I still love the Ball Mount, even thou the first time I took it off the little barrings with the springs, which I believe is the rattle control fell out. Did nt bother to stick them back in since it would happen again. I chased them down the driveway. I have a bolt on the underside of my receiver that I tighten which keeps any rattle happening. I had that installed. It pulls the trailer with no problem. Thanks, Sherry:

Thanks for the follow up Sherry. I am happy to hear that you do have an anti-rattle device that is working well for you. I also wanted to let you know that Diversi-Tech has redesigned this adjustable ball mount. The new design no longer includes the anti-rattle balls that you chased down the driveway.

The key driven locks look questionable at first, but they hold just as solid as the pins. I don't think I have pressed it's limits with my power dump trailer, but it definitely meets my needs. I generally hook it up to the top 2" receiver on my torklift 20k receiver. Works great. Feels substantial! 550239

The hitch is very versatile for multiple trailer heights. The quality of finish is very good. The only drawback is there is up and down play in the receiver were the hitch locks in. This causes some hitch noise when braking due to the play. Locking feature means no theft. Over all a very good buy and worth the extra price 91819

I ordered this because even though mine wasn't broken I wanted a bullet aluminum one. No welds. Good looking, solid, and weighs a lot less than my last one (which is steel). I will begin to put it through the rigors of my towing starting tomorrow. Glad I found this product. 304769

Satisfied Received helpful advice, order was taken efficiently and product arrived as promised. Probably a much nicer mount than I need, but I was 5 hours from my truck, the trailer was being built, and I was not sure how much drop would be needed. This one covers a wide range, is attractive, easy to use, and has a convenient locking feature. May or may not need the smaller ball, but like knowing it's there just in case. And it all looks good pulling a Kubota tractor on a 22' trailer. 3683

Received the hitch recently.....first impressions are that this is a well made product, very well made. Heavy as heck too....which is nice. Mounted it up and locked it in, can't wait to tow with it. Seems well designed as well, the two key holes for locking it in place and adjusting the height have good weather seals as well. Not a lot of play in the moving parts which is nice, no real slop to deal with. 121946

The ball mount is everything I hoped it would be. I shopped around for a while and etrailer had the best price. The mount no longer has the silencing roller balls you hear people breaking. The finish is clean and rugged. My only concern is that the key is more universal than I wanted. My former DT locking pin key worked on the hitch too. 160145

Review from a similar Fastway Self-Locking in Ball Mounts

The ball mount in itself is awesome. Very solid and heavy and the build quality appears to be excellent. Unfortunately I had to return it and got instead the similar Fastway DTALBM6625-2S - which is for a 2-1/2 inch receiver and also the balls are stainless steel. The reason I had to return it is because I have a 2018 Ford F-250 Super Duty. They come with a 2-1/2" receiver and Ford includes a reducing adapter to get it to 2". The issue was that the lock mechanism on the Fastway does not send the lacking rods out far enough to engage BOTH the adapter sleeve and the 2-1/2 inch hitch - so the entire thing would just slide out. This was not a product flaw, I should have considered better how the locking mechanism worked before ordering. E-trailer was great with the return process, even provided a downloadable return shipping label at a reasonable cost and I got the refund to paypal the same day they received it back. I again got from etrailer their Fastway DTALBM6625-2S which is an absolute BEAST as well and looks great on the truck. 487197

Love the way it looks. However there are to many moving parts. the fit of the ball support bracket to the vertical slide shaft is loose and allows to much movement. Because the alluminum is soft I am already seeing wear on the spline. Also was loose fit into my receiver. I had to add a set screw to keep it tight in the sleeve. At this rate I expect I will have to replace it within 5 years. Great product if you don't haul heavier loads or if you do not use it very often. I would not buy it again. 572998

I recently purchased a 2013 GMC 2500 Denali It comes with a 2.5" hitch with and adapter to make it down to a 2" hitch.. Unfortunately this locking device extends out on each side only far enough for the 2" adapter and not into the 2.5" frame hitch. I suppose i will have to find one that has a hole all the way through for a lock.. 74736

Hello Andy I have 2014 GMC denali 2500hd and from what I understand is that the locking pins that come out are not long enough to lock into the 2.5 receiver?

Yes, that is correct. This adjustable ball mount is intended to be used in 2 inch hitch applications. The Diversi-Tec # DTALBM6625

ball mount fits loosely in the receiver so that the pins that extend out from the ball mount shaft through the holes in the receiver don't extend out far enough, for my liking. This is because since the ball mount shaft has so much play, it will shift to one side. Then, the pin on the other side does not extend all the way out of the hole so that it is not flush. True, i am being paranoid. However, i imagine a case like a crash where enough force could pull the shaft out from the not fully extended pin side to release the trailer to wreak more damage. I would just feel more secure if the pins went out further through the receiver or the shaft was not so loose. Otherwise, i really like the product a lot... enough to give it four stars... :o) 279757

I have not had a chance to use the ball mount yet but it is easy to use and fits receiver with no issues. I recently purchased a Curt class V receiver that is installed below my OEM receiver. With the drop installed in the Curt receiver in the upright position, the back of the ball mount comes very close to the bumper on my 2011 Ram 2500 crew cab. I will see if there are any contact issues when actually towing and revise my review, if necessary. 114259

Comments

After using the hitch for six months, with the Curt receiver, I found it does contact my bumper when positioned at that height, causing scrathes. I also find that I can not unlock the receiver pins without having to tap pretty hard on the pin ends.

So far so good. Only had the hitch for 2 wks. Upgraded my tractor hauler truck and trailer so why not the hitch as well. Looks to be very solid construction. As to the locking mechanism I am pleased I chose the barrel keys. Easier to keep clean (dirt roads) and spending this $$ on hitch I lock the design. Other hitches have been stolen when they beat the lock bar off the receiver. 179248

Unfortunately, the vertical portion of the receiver hangs down too far down for my application and I ended up scraping it on the concrete when backing out of a moderately sloped driveway. The manufacturer does not offer the receiver portion of the hitch as a replacement part so I had to purchase an entirely new hitch with different dimensions. It's a beautiful, sturdy hitch but you need to consider how low the vertical portion of the receiver is in relation to how steep your driveway is. 194307

I'm a very picky buyer; like to research everything - and I also don't have a problem with paying a little more for quality - and for this aluminum ball mount that meant the polish/look of the mount, and even more important the quality of the locking mechanism. This product doesn't disappoint. I have no doubts this mount will take as much punishment as steel mounts and look 10 times better over time. I also appreciate having the integrated locking mechanism - cleaner look, in fact someone came up to me and told me they thought I'd forgot to but the bolt in it. So it looks great, does the job = all expectations met! 543582

I have owned 2 of these hitches. First one lost when I had a hitch pin fall out of a 2 1/2" adapter...fortunately not towing! The hitch is easy to adjust, very durable, looks nice and is well engineered for towing. Finer points that need attention: 1. rubber caps over cylinder locks have a tether to prevent loss that never allows the rubber cap to fit back in place...ever. It's a design flaw. New out the box, the cap won't fit back into place after you remove it the first time. Expect to have to always have to secure the rubber caps or just cut it off. 2. The anti-rattle spring loaded ball bearings are not effective. I have used this hitch in over a dozen vehicles and none have had hitch openings tight enough to allow the anti-rattle bearings to be effective or make contact. The hitch will rattle, always, unless you use some metal shims or tape with duct tape around the draw bar. 3. If you try to adapt the 2" draw bar to a 2 1/2" hitch, it puts the hitch about 3-4" farther back away from the truck. This could be a problem from the standpoint of hitting your shins on the bar, to putting your load farther back, to decreasing your rear clearance. 4. Spending this much money on a hitch, I typically go through 2-4 vehicles with the same hitch and they all have different size hitches. If you buy the 2 1/2" size draw bar with the cylinder lock, it's only good for a 2 1/2" hitch. Not good if you try to back convert to a 2" hitch or use it in one of your buddy's 2" receivers. If you buy the 2" draw bar, you can purchase the $50 adapter to use in either a 2" or 2 1/2" hitch size. 103332

Well its been a year! I use this hitch almost every weekend. I have a 20 ft stock trailer, a 18 ft car hauler and a 32 ft enclosed toy hauler. The hitch works great with all 3 trailers, from 1000 lbs of cargo to 6000 lbs of cattle. NO PROBLEM!!!! Dont second guess just buy it you will love it. Oh yeah because of its design and the fact that it locks on to your receiver, I have never taken it off and I dont worry about it being stolen.

Very strong, easy to install and very secure. Yes a bit pricey, but well worth the money. I did notice there was what I thought was an unusual amount of play in the receiver. I called etrailer and Marcia was so very helpful and very concerned that I may have received the wrong product. She even called the manufacturer and found out what the changes that were made by the manufacturer which made the pictures incorrect. My hat is off to Marcia and all the folks at etrailer 130643

Good Morning Patrick I just love the hitch for several reasons. It works flawlessly to start with and I am able to adapt to almost any trailer I choose to pull. It is definitely a plus being able to move the hitch to adapt for proper levelling. I have a lot of people just stop and look at the hitch when I am in parking lots, and a time or two they have asked me where I got it. The only downside is the fact that while people see it, so does my back up alarm...

Adjustable ball mount - Love the product. It is the second ball mount I purchased needed to get the 2.5" shank since I changed trucks. The only issue I have had is the rubber caps over the key holes. On the first I purchased I noticed when I opened the key hole covers I could not push the rubber caps back into place, fully, because the tab that holds it to the unit would not go back into the hole - it would bunch up creating an obstruction preventing it from seating flush. After several tries and methods I finally cut the tabs off so the caps would close completely. When the new one arrived the other day I was cognizant of the previous issue and tried not to pull the cap out too far to avoid the issue however the same thing happened. In this case I was able to work the tab back into the hole in both places. I wonder if the holes were a little larger if it would not help this situation? Keep up the good work. 63114

I live in Michigan and toe Snowmobile trailers during the winter with lots of salt. Have you used your new hitch in the salt?

I leave the hitch on year round and live in Eastern PA where there is always salt on the roads. Maybe a little rust on the actual ball from where the finish has worn off - other than that no wear or salt damage.

Required a bit of gentle sanding to fit into my receiver. I hated to scuff up the mirror finish. Looks great on my lifted Tacoma. The locking mechanism & reversible slide ball and no rattle design is genius. 4 keys, I like that too. I wish more things were built this way. 58013

I stand by the 5 star rating, hitch has been with out fault. I miss calculated the and trailer sits at an angle, ocasionally thats a problem. I extended the trailer tonge 3ft. that eased the angle problem. I may sell this one and reorder a correct .

Does what need. Gave me the drop to level my trailer. Like the locking system. Nice made hitch. Did want the 10 inch drop. Got a call from etrailer that it was on back order until September. So went with the 8 inch which works with what I have. Just wanted the additional adjustment. Very happy. 96572

Unfortunately, was using the hitch and the lock pin broke. Short story, was going over some railroad tracks. So had slowed. Suddenly lots of noise. Pull over to find trailer dragging. Damaged the jack, under my bumper. Had to leave the trailer to get another hitch. Got a replacement from manufacture under warranty. Told me never happens, but they have reworked the pin. When it happened, ball stayed on trailer hitch, rest stayed on the truck. Dont trust the hitch anymore. Crazy to spend major money on a product, to have it risk your life and those around you. Hope it was truly a one time event. But beware!

This product was DOA. First I couldn't retract the pins. I followed the troubleshooting guide, and was able to retract them. Then, I couldn't lock it back up. They key got stuck. I followed the troubleshooting guide again. Nothing works. I am in the process of getting a return label from eTrailer. I am not interested in a replacement of the same type. Have read reviews of similar problems. Clearly a manufacturing problem. 246650

I was looking for an aluminum receiver when I came across etrailer.com. Upon searching I found the Diversi-Tech self locking ball mount. Honestly I didn't know these existed. Being one who has lost my keys off the bumper in the past this caught my eye immediately. I called to place the order and the staff was extremely helpful. I mentioned I was leaving on a trip and I was told they would try to get the product to me before I left. I've heard this in the past, but rarely does it ever pan out. Much to my excitement, two days before I left the product was at my door. Very satisfied customer. I will not hesitate to shop with etrailer again. 202550

I work in a machine shop and this is a great piece of hardware to add to your towing arsenal. The built quality is great. I bought this to use on my subaru xv crosstrek with the torklift hitch so it would be easier to get the hitch in and out without crawling under the car to remove the hitch pin. 127210

Review from a similar Fastway Self-Locking in Ball Mounts

Just received my hitch. This is actually the 2nd one, of the exact same hitch. Hate to have had to spend the $ on it twice, but here's why the 1st didn't last. It's an AWESOME hitch! Looks great, versatile, and tough as stone. Tow my 21 foot wakeboard boat constantly with a lifted Silverado. Have pulled the skid steer several times with it also. Enclosed utility trailer (21 ft), no problem! Quick and easy to go from 2" to 2 5/16. LOVE the 2.5 receiver shank, no more sleeves!!! BUT, I live in snow country. If you use it in the winter, make sure to lube the mechanism's that move. After a few years, got really tough to actuate the locks, and finally the key lock broke. I'm sure if you squirt some WD40 in there, that won't be a problem. I just got lazy, and that's usually when you brake things lol! And it has a different tag on it than before. It used to be made by diversi tech. But I've looked at them side by side, they're the EXACT same hitch. Just must've gotten bought out by someone. But you'll love the hitch! People will check it out, and nobody can steal it! 615213

  • Replacement Locking Mechanism For The Self-Locking Adjustable 2-Ball Mount Part # DTALBM6407
  • In the last few years, Fastway acquired Diversi-Tech. Therefore, all Diversi-Tech products are now being sold under the Fastway brand. In regards to the Self-Locking, Adjustable 2-Ball Mount w Chrome Balls part # DTALBM6407, I spoke with my contact at Fastway aka "Diversi-Tech" and they informed me that you would need to use air tool oil to help lubricate the locking mechanism on the ball mount. I would not recommend WD-40 as this would cause the existing oil in the mechanism to dry...
