Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Ball Mounts - Fixed Ball Mount - 80248 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Draw-Tite Ball Mount. This is going to let you hook up your trailer to your tow vehicle. The shank portion of the unit slides into the receiver tube of your hitch, and then the ball platform provides a 9 point for a hitch ball. Hitch balls are sold separately. The unit's made from a sturdy steel construction. It does feature a hollow shank, back here you can see that that's hollow and not solid. The unit's also going to feature a really nice black powder coated finish on it.

That's going to do a great job at resisting rust and corrosion, making sure that the unit looks good for a long time and that it lasts for a long time. You can use this in either the drop or the rise positions. Both are available to help ensure more level towing setup in situation. When you're installing this in your hitch you slide this portion in until the pin holes line up with the pin holes in the hitch. Then you secure it with a hitch pin and clip or a hitch lock. Those items are sold separately.

If you're in need you can find them at etrailer.com. The pin holes on the shank will accept a standard 5/8 inch diameter pin. The unit is designed for a 2 inch by 2 inch trailer hitch receiver. A few measurements to mention for you real quick. If we take a measurement from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the hitch ball, so what I mean by that is the hitch ball hole. If we measure center on center going from that point there to this point right here, that's going to give us a measurement of right around 9 inches.

If you're using this in the rise position it's going to give you a maximum rise of 9 3/4 of an inch. That's measuring from the inside top edge of the receiver tube of your hitch or the top of the shank to the top of the ball platform. Now, when using it in the rise position you're going to have a gross towing weight capacity of 3.500 pounds with a tongue weight capacity of 350 pounds, and you're going to have about 3 3/4 of an inch of clearance from the pin hole to the upright portion right here. You just want to be cautious of that because sometimes the outermost point of your vehicle can keep you from being able to use a mount in the rise position. What you can do, is you can measure from the center of the hitch pin hole on your hitch out to the furthest point away from the back of the vehicle. If that measurement is less than 3 3/4 of an inch then this is going to work perfect for you in the rise position up to about, looks to be right around 4 inches. Now, in the drop position it's going to offer a maximum drop of about 11 inches.

Again, from the inside top edge of the receiver tube of the hitch or the top of the shank to the top of the ball platform. When used in this position it's going to have a gross towing weight of 5,000 pounds with a maximum tongue weight of 500 pounds. Then the diameter of the hitch ball hole right here, that's going to measure 1 inch. That's going to do it for today's look at the Draw-Tite Ball Mount rated with a max capacity of 5,000 pounds in the drop position and 3,500 pounds when used in the rise position.

Inexpensive. Does the job for a small yard trailer. Do not use often enough to justify cost of an alloy one for less weight. If you are fitting and removing your unit to the tow vehicle on a regular basis then you probably will be happier with the alloy drop hitch which is way lighter but more $. 571906

Works as advertised. Best if combined with a "quiet-hitch" type mechanism to reduce the extra play in the system if it's just slid into place and held there with the hitch pin. 380381

  • Best Fixed Ball Mount Option for Motorhome and Tow Dolly Compatibility with 10-11 Inch Drop
The Draw-Tite Ball Mount - 9-3/4" Rise, 11" Drop - 9" Long - 3,500 to 5,000 lbs # 80248 will bring your hitch height to 14 or 15 inches to match your tow dolly. The ball mount is rated for up to 5,000 lbs n the drop position so you simply need to use a hitch ball rated for 3,750 lbs or more. I recommend the 2 inch ball # 63845 or the 2-5/16 inch ball # 63847 depending on which matches your coupler. Both are rated for 7,500 lbs so they will work well. The Convert-A-Ball Ball Mount...

  • Correct Use of Roadmaster 10 Inch High-Low Hitch Adapter
Tow bars are used behind motorhomes or trucks to tow a vehicle. The Roadmaster 10 inch High - Low Hitch Adapter, part number RM-048-10, is not designed to have tongue weight applied to it like when towing a boat trailer, utility trailer or camper. This adapter is designed for applications where the towed vehicle is resting on its own four wheels and being pulled by another vehicle with a tow bar. We do have ball mounts with a 10 inch drop or more and adjustable draw bars that will allow...

  • Recommended Ball Mount with 9-1/2 inch Rise
Between the two ball mount options referenced in your question, I recommend going with the Convert-A-Ball # AMSC12 that has the larger 10-3/4 inch rise. This is because when loading your tow vehicle up for a trip with your trailer, there is bound to be some rear sag that will lower the ball mount even further. Choosing a ball mount with a slightly higher rise than you need will help to account for this. Another option you may consider is the Draw-Tite Ball Mount # 80248 that has a 9-3/4...

  • Can a Front-Mount Hitch and Adapter be Used to Push a Trailer Into Tight Spots?
You certainly aren't alone having a bit of trouble backing up a long trailer. Using a front-mounted hitch like your # 65078 is fine, but the Blue Ox adapter, # BX88132, is designed for flat-towing so it isn't going to work for you. What you can do instead is attach a fixed ball mount, and the Draw-Tite # 80248 is going to give you 9-3/4" of rise. Please keep in mind that the Draw-Tite has has a max gross towing weight (GTW) of 3,500 lbs and max tongue weight (TW) of 350 lbs in the rise...

  • Can Hitch Extender be Used with Ball Mount to Clear Rear Bumper
A hitch extension like the Curt # C45791 can be used to gain the bumper clearance needed for the Draw-Tite Ball Mount # 80248 that you mentioned but there is an important thing to keep in mind when using this or any other adapter. When the adapter/extension is in place your trailer hitch capacity will be reduced by 50 percent. This just means if the hitch on your Odyssey has a 3,500 pound towing capacity and a 350 pound tongue weight capacity these limits will be reduced to 1,750 and 175...

To even out the height difference between your CR-V's hitch opening and the coupler on the Yakima Rack and Roll Trailer # Y08107 you will need a ball mount with rise, or height increase, as described in the linked article. Based on your measurement you will want a 2-inch ball mount with about 10-inches of rise. We offer Hidden Hitch ball mount # 80248 that will fit your 2-inch hitch and provide 9-3/4-inches of rise. • Recommendation for a Trailer Ball Mount with an 11 Inch Drop For a Motor Home Towing a Tow Dolly
The Hidden Hitch Ball Mount, # 80248, with the 11 inch drop would be a good choice. The 11 inch drop will put you right about where you need to be (14 inches from the ground). It will actually be a little higher at 14.5 inches but the tongue weight from the tow dolly should take care of that. I have included a link to our FAQ article on choosing the right ball mount for reference. Keep in mind that this ball mount is rated for 5,000 pounds gross trailer weight and 500 pounds tongue weight....

  • Availability of Ball Mount with 10 inch Rise for Class I Trailer Hitch on 2005 Jeep Liberty
The highest rise on a ball mount we currently offer that is compatible with a Class I trailer hitch is the Curt # C45028, which has a rise of 5-3/8 inches. Higher rise ball mounts are only compatible with higher rated hitches. If you need this additional rise to tow your trailer level with your 2005 Jeep Liberty, I recommend changing to a Class III trailer hitch like the Draw-Tite Max Frame # 75128. This will give you a tongue weight capacity of 500 pounds and a towing weight capacity...

There is no one product that can both provide the required drop for use with your tow dolly AND provide a second receiver opening for use with a bike rack. Part # RM-077-4 that you referenced cannot be used with a tow dolly. A better solution is a standard ball mount with the required 11-inches of drop, such as # 80248 from Hidden Hitch, and a towing style bike rack that can fit over the ball mount, such as the Swagman # S64664. This will avoid having a second mechanical connection in...
