Video Transcript for Curt Ball Mounts - Fixed Ball Mount - D320 Review

Today we'll be reviewing part # D320, this is a Curt Ball Mount with Sway Control Bracket. It's going to offer a 3/4 inch rise or a 2 inch drop. It does have the built in bracket here on the right hand side for easy installation of the Sway Control Kit which is sold separately. This mount is designed to fit a 2x2 inch trailer hitch receiver, Wench is in the hitch ball, you want to make sure that the shank of the hitch ball does not exceed the ball hole diameter. Measuring this hole down here. With this mount, we have a 1 inch diameter, so that means that this ball mounts' going to require a hitch ball with a 1 inch shank in diameter, not in length. The diameter of the sway bracket here is going to measure 5/8 inch. The bracket itself is going to measure about 2 inches in width by about 4 1/2 inches from the end to the beginning of the weld.

This is a really simple installation, simply just take the shank of the mount and slide it into the receiver tube of the hitch, line up the pinholes and install a hitch pin and clip or a hitch pin and lock. Those items are sold separately and you can refer to the ball mounts' product page in the related items to view those products or go to our website and type in part # PC3, and that will refer you to this 5/8 inch pin that comes with the clip. With the mount in this position, this is the drop position, if we measure from the inside top edge of the receiver tube to the top of the ball platform, it's going to give us 2 inches, so that's the amount of drop that this mount provides. Measuring from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball hole, we have a measurement, about 7 1/2 inches. This mount is available to use in the rise position as well. Just take it out and flip it over, line up the pin holes.

In this position, it's going to give us a rise of 3/4 inch. The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the beginning of the upright curve here, it's going to measure about 4 1/2 inches. You want to make sure you have the appropriate amount of clearance at the rear of your vehicle so that the mount doesn't interfere with the outermost point of your vehicle. If we measure from the center of the hitch pin hole to the rear of the mount, it's going to give us a measurement of about 2 1/2 inches. This does have a hollow shank on it, and the ball mount itself has a gross trailer weight of 7,500 pounds, with a maximum tongue weight capacity of 750 pounds. That's going to complete today's review of part # D320, this is a Curt Ball Mount with Sway Control Bracket. .

Purchased this hitch as a companion for our Reese anti sway control. The small ball for the Reese sway control fits in the bracket and the 2” drop on the hitch is exactly what we needed to have our Jayco camper level when towing. 680455

I cannot use this ball mount because the shaft is too short that goes into hitch receiver on my one ton Dodge truck. It does not allow enough room between truck back bumper and ball to allow any trailer tongue to be put on ball. 104820

Ask the Experts about this Curt Ball Mounts

  • Effect of Using Extra-Long Ball Mount for Towing
Use of an extra-long ball mount like # 80232 will not reduce a hitch's towing weight capacity the way that use of a separate extender/adapter will. Extenders like # C45791 and # D-192 actually do reduce the hitch towing capacity by 50-percent. Weight distribution hitch systems such as # C17501 should not be used with any type of hitch extender or adapter. A friction sway control unit like # 83660 can be used with an extra-long ball mount like # 80232 by adding a sway control bracket...

  • Ball Mount Options that Have Sway Control Ball Mounting Tab
Some draw bars will have the sway bar ball attachment mounted to the side of the ball mount platform like the Curt Ball Mount part # D320. Other options include using an adapter like part # RP26003 which fits on top of the platform between it and the hitch ball. Or you can have the tab welded to the side of the platform with part # 3442. We also have an adjustable ball mount part # 7390 which allows for various drop/rise settings and has the platform for the sway control ball. With...

You can pick up a ball mount like the Curt # D320 with a sway control tab that offers 4 inches of drop right here on this page! The Draw-Tite # 7390 is adjustable between 3-3/4" of rise and 5-1/4" of drop and has a 6,000 lb towing capacity and 600 lb tongue weight capacity. Your other option is to use a ball mount with a 4" drop and 7,500 lb capacity such as the Draw-Tite # 2753 with Reese Sway-Control Bracket # RP26003.

  • Availability of 4-Inch Drop Ball Mount with Sway Control Bracket Like # D320
We do not offer a ball mount like # D320 but with a 4-inch drop, but you can choose the ball mount you need and then simply have the sway control bracket # 3442 welded on. For a 2-inch ball mount with a 4-inch drop and 7500-lb rating we offer Draw-Tite # 2753.

  • Sway Control Bracket Recommendation for a Left Hand Sway Bar
You can use the Curt Ball Mount with Sway Control Bracket, # D320, in the rise position to have the sway control bracket on the left side, but you will want to remember that doing this will raise the height of your trailer tongue by almost 3 inches. This can create additional sway issues even with a sway control bar installed. Another option that you can look into is using a weld on sway control tab like part # 3442. This tab can be welded to the side of your current ball mount to provide...

  • Is There A Torque Spec For Trailer Sway Control Hitch Ball
I called my contact at Curt and asked about the torque needed for the ball that the sway control is attached to on the trailer hitch. They told me that there has never been a torque listed but if you would torque it to about 150 ft-lbs it will have no problems. There is no torque value in the installation instructions. You want to periodically check all of the towing components to make sure they are all secure and ready to use.

  • How to Mount Sway Control Ball on Right Side of Ball Mount Used in Rise Position
I do have a solution for you. Simply use a ball mount with the same rise, like part # 2923 along with a sway control tab, part # RP26003. The tab is placed on top of the ball mount once it is situated in the rise position, and is installed so that it is sandwiched between the trailer ball and the ball mount. We do not carry a ball mount that would have the tab on the right side when used in the rise position.

  • Will Longer Ball Mount Cause Trailer Sway
As long as the ball mount used has the correct rise/drop, using a longer than usual ball mount won't make the boat trailer any more likely to sway. The # 80232 ballmount is the longest one we offer, at 15-3/4 inches in length. The ball mount features a 2 inch drop or 1 inch rise, depending on which orientation it's used in. It has a 6000 lb capacity, for a 1-7/8 inch ball, use part # 19261 or # 63845 for a 2 inch ball. Sway is typically caused by other reasons, such as trailer that's...

Your best option is to go with a higher-rated adjustable ball mount like the Pro Series # 63071 and then weld on a sway control tab # 3442.
