Video Transcript for Curt Ball Mounts - Fixed Ball Mount - C45112 Review

Today we're going to review part #C45112. This is a CURT ball mount for two inch hitches with the five thousand pound weight capacity. This ball mount will let you hook up your trailer to your tow vehicle. The shank right here slides into your vehicle's two inch hitch receiver opening, and is secured by a hitch pin and clip or a hitch lock through the pin hole right here. Now, the hitch pin and clip or the hitch lock are not included. They are sold separately on our website, and they are listed on this product page as a related product.

This is the pin and clip that would work to hold it into place. Now the ball platform itself here is 00:00:36 provide the mounting point for your hitch ball, your hitch ball will attach to this hole right here. Now the hitch ball would depend on the size you would need. Again, they are sold separately and they are listed on this product page as a related product. Again, here's an example of a hitch ball that would attach to the ball mount. Now both the drop on this ball mount, and if you turn it over to the rise positions, are available to ensure leveled towing between your trailer and your tow vehicle.

This is a sturdy, hollow steel shank right here, it provides maximum strength and durability. This ball mount has a nice corrosion resistant, high-gloss black powder coat finish. Specs on this again, it's designed to fit into a two inch by two inch trailer hitch receiver. I do want to give you some measurements on this, one of the first ones we're going to do is the length, oops, let's get a little bit taller one here, there we go. Now the length on a ball mount, whenever they give you the length of a ball mount, they'd be actually giving you the measurement from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball hole.

That'll be the length on the ball mount. On this one, what I'm going to try to do is get a rough idea here. There we go. I'm going to try to hold this around the center of the ball hole and then if we put the ruler on here, you can see from the center of the ball hole to the center of the hitch pin hole, you're going to be right at about fourteen inches for the length. This would have a length of fourteen inches. Now the rise and the drop measurements, right now it's in the drop position.

One thing I do want to mention is on the CURT ball mounts like this one, they do list, they rise in the drop, but what they basically do is round it off. They don't give you the exact measurements. What we're going to do is give you the exact measurement of the drop, and the drop would be from the top of the shank to the top of the ball mount platform. If we put the ruler on this, if you figure this goes across, the drop would be right at nine and a quarter inches of the drop. Now when it's in the drop position like this position here, the gross towing weight capacity is five thousand pounds. Tongue weight capacity would be five hundred pounds. If we turn it over, and this would be the rise position just like that, you'd measure from the top of the shank to the top of the ball mount platform. Again, let's put this to give us a straight edge and if we go by and see it's going to be right at eight inches for the rise measurement. Now when it's in this position, the gross towing weight will reduce to thirty five hundred pounds and the tongue weight to three hundred and fifty pounds. Another measurement you want to make sure you remember is the ball hole diameter on this one is one inch, just like that, and the reason that's critical is when you go to purchase your correct sized hitch ball, you want to make sure the shank diameter that goes into this hole is the same as the ball mount or the ball hole diameter. This will be a one inch diameter, so you want to make sure the shank on the hitch ball is one inch shank diameter. The last one is the pinhole diameter, that's right here. This is what will hold this into place with your hitch pin and clip or your hitch lock. It's five eighths of an inch, so this would be a pin that's five eights inch diameter. It does have a limited lifetime warranty. What I want to show you is. I'm going to pull out here's a example of a two inch hitch receiver opening. Now because the drop is so much, I won't be able to show you that but we're going to turn it over and do it in the rise position just to show you. You just slide it in until that hitch pinhole winds up, put your pin through, put your clip on, and that would hold it into place. Just to slide it up to give you an idea, you'll see, there it is installed in your pitch receiver in the rise position. Now if you're in the drop, you just take your pin and clip out, reverse it in the other way and it'll slide right in. We'll go ahead and take that out, but that should do it for the review on part #C45112, the CURT ball mount for two inch hitches with the five thousand pound weight capacity. .

Biggest issue is that NO ONE warns a potential purchaser of FIT! Tolerances matter. First time I used this ball mount I couldn't believe rattling. I have a 5x8 enclosed trailer and was pulling with my Explorer. Had to deliver a piece of furniture 17miles away for repair. I last 3miles was down a gravel road and OH my God, I slowed to a crawl, but still thought I was going to destroy my factory installed receiver. Called Curt and they had me get calipers to measure the receiver opening to the thousandths of an inch! And yes, there was too much difference between receiver and ball mount shaft! If I would have been apprised of this issue I'd certainly done some pre-purchase measuring. You can buy ball mounts at any auto store, or Walmart even and there is NO warning of this issue!!! Curt sent an anti-rattle fitting to me. Yes, they know about this issue. It helps some but is not perfect. It helps to minimize horizontal movement but not so much on vertical. But better than before. Ironically, the ball mount pins I bought from e-trailer and reviewed above can't be used with the anti-rattle fitting! So, there was some money [thrown] away. Lastly, I've had ball mounts before for other vehicles and NEVER had a rattling problem. Probably because I had everything installed at a trailer retailer. And none of the ball mounts I had were extremely heavy. This Curt ball mount is very very heavy. I did need a greater drop for my Explorer and existing trailer, and maybe over shot by one inch. But this thing could be used a great weapon. 700116

For your John Deere x590, I recommend the Reese Towpower 3-Way ATV Hitch w/ Ball Mount Adapter - 2,000 lbs # RP7065100. This will give you a 2 inch receiver that will allow you to use a ball mount like # C45112 in the rise position to get you at the right height for your hitch ball and coupler to meet. This will allow your current jack to work and save your back. I've attached an article to assist with finding the correct ball mount for your trailer. Then you will just need the matching...

There are no hitch adapters that offer just rise for a 1-1/4" hitch. What bike rack do you have? If it is one we carry we may be able to find you something to convert it to a 2" rack, or there is also the possibility of a new rack with a shank that has rise. If you let me know what rack you have I may be able to find a solution for you.

  • Ball Mount for 2 Inch Hitch with Drop Near 9 inches and Higher Capacity than 5,000 lb
The closest solution out there is the Convert-a-Ball ball mount part # AMSC8 which is capable of a drop of 8 inches and has a 10,000 lb capacity. We don't have anything with a 9 inch drop that has more capacity than the # C45112 which has a 5,000 lb capacity. If you'd be okay with an adjustable ball mount we have the B&W Tow and Stow part # BWTS10050B which can do a drop of up to 9-1/2 inches and has a 10k capacity. It also comes with all three hitch ball sizes as well.

The Curt Ball Mount for 2 Inch Hitches # C45112 referenced in your question has a rise of 8 inches or a drop of 9-1/4 inches. With this in mind, it will work very nicely for your towing setup that requires an 8 inch rise to tow the trailer level. The ball mount, when in the rise position, has a towing weight capacity of 3,500 pounds, a tongue weight capacity of 350 pounds and is designed to fit inside 2 inch trailer hitch receivers. It also features a length of 14 inches from the center...

  • Recommended Ball Mount with 8 Inch Rise to Clear Rear Bumper on Vehicle
As you mentioned in your question, using an adapter to extend the hitch receiver on your vehicle, such as the Curt # C45791, is going to reduce the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50%. Since your trailer requires the full tongue weight capacity of your vehicle and hitch, your best option is going to be to replace your existing Weigh Safe Ball Mount. I recommend looking at a ball mount with a longer shank like the Curt # C45112. This ball mount features an 8 inch rise...

Since the Cruisemaster DO35 requires a ball mount platform with a 1 inch diameter ball hole you'd need an adjustable ball mount that uses a traditional style of ball mount platform like the MaxxTow Adjustable-Height Ball Mount # MT70067 which would work well. This can do up to 10 inches of drop or 8 inches of rise. I attached a review video for this ball mount for you to check out as well.

Ideally a hitched trailer will be level to the ground. We often recommend starting off with the hitch ball being a bit higher - an inch or so - than the top of the coupler on the level trailer since once hitched there will be a degree of squat in the rear of the tow vehicle from the trailer tongue weight. This is perfectly acceptable. You can select a different ball mount for your hitch that gives you additional height (rise) by using the link provided at right. For example, if you want...

The best solution we have for when you are towing would be the Curt ball mount part # C45112. This is a longer ball mount that has 14 inches from the pin hole to the ball hole and will give you a rise of 6 inches like you need. As far as a hitch extender that can also do the rise we do not have anything like that. This would add quite a bit of leverage on the hitch which would end up damaging the hitch.

If you look at the support bracket that is welded behind the ball mount platform of the Curt Ball Mount part # C45112 it provides more support in the drop position than in the rise. When in the drop position the bracket works to support ball mount and it's mainly the metal of the bracket that is doing this.
