Video Transcript for Curt Ball Mounts - Fixed Ball Mount - C45100 Review

Today we're going to review part number C-4-5-1-0-0, this is the Curt Ball Mount for 2 inch hitches with a 5000 pound weight capacity. This ball mount will let you hook up your trailer to your tow vehicle. This portion, the shank right here, will slide into your vehicle's 2 inch hitch receiver and it's secured into place by either a hitch pinning clip or a hitch lock through the hole right here. The pinning clip for the lock we do sell separately on our website. They are listed on this product page as a related product. I do have an example of the pinning clip that would be used to hold it into place.

Also, the ball platform right down here provides a mounting point for your hitch ball, the hitch ball would install into that hole there and again the hitch ball would depend on what size you would need for your application and we do sell those separately and again they are listed on this product page as a related product. Here's an example of a hitch ball that would install into the ball mount. Both the drop and the rise position's on this ball mount are available to insure leveled towing between your trailer and your tow vehicle. Also, the sturdy hollow shank right back here provides a maximum strength and durability. It does use a corrosion resistant high gloss black powder coat finish on it. A few specs on this.

This is designed to fit into a 2 inch by 2 inch trailer hitch receiver opening. The length on this . the length is always measured from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball mount hole. What I'm going to do is put a ruler on this to try and give you an idea . Let's see if we can get a good view of this. What I'm going to do is put a ruler right at about the center just to give us a starting point, and you'll see once you get the ruler on there, from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball hole you're looking at right about 13 inches for the length.

They also have a rise and drop on this and to give the measurement on that, this is in dropped position, so you measure from the top of this shank to the ball mount platform. If we put a ruler on this, and if you roughly figure its coming over this, the drop is 7 and 1/2 inches. Now, when it's in the dropped position like this, your gross towing weight capacity is 5000 pounds, tongue weight capacity is 500 pounds. If you switch this and flip it over into the rise position like that you'd be measuring again from the top of the shank to the top of the ball platform. Let me hold the ruler on to that, and if we do that you'll see that the rise is going to be 6 and 1/4 inches. Once it's in the rise position, here towing weight and tongue weight will change.

Gross towing weight would be 3500 pounds, tongue weight capacity at 350 pounds. Another measurement the ball hole diameter, you can see right here, that's designed to put the hitch ball in, this would measure 1 inch in diameter, put a ruler on that, you can see it's 1 inch diameter. The reason that is critical, when you purchase a hitch ball you do want to make sure the shank diameter of the hitch ball that you're installing is going to be the same as the ball hole diameter. You'll need a 1 inch shank diameter hitch ball to fit into this ball mount. The last measurement is your pin hole diameter right here, it's a 5/8 inch diameter, designed to use the 5/8 inch diameter size pin and clip. What I'm going to do right now is just show you how this installs. It's pretty simple. I got an example. Here's a two inch hitch receiver opening right here, so if you want it in the dropped position, we'll just slide it in like that. You line your hitch pin hole up, with the hitch pin hole on your hitch receiver. Slide your pin through, once it's all the way through, put your clip in. Now you're ball mount is in the dropped position on your hitch receiver. If you want to switch it around pull your pin and clip out, flip it upside down, slide it in. Line your . And then you'll see once you put your pin and clip in that it will lock it into the rise position. Okay and that should do it for the review, on part number C-4-5-1-0-0 the Curt Ball Mount for 2 inch hitches with the 5000 pound weight capacity. .

It.s too big for the receiver! It measures 2.030" and won't go in. I'm hoping to be able to grind off enough with my belt sander to make it work. If not it'll end up in the trash. 539852

Comments
If your receiver tube is outside of the small end of tolerance, it could cause fit problems. It is acceptable to remove the finish of the ball mount via sanding, but using a grinder on it is not recommended as the heat build-up could have a negative effect on the composition of the steel the ballmount is constructed of.

The only thing keeping this from 5 stars is the lack of a ball flange nut indentation on both sides. I used this mount upside down to get my ball out and away from the bumper on my car. I had to use a pipe wrench on the ball flange to hold it while I tightened the nut on the other side. As you can imaging the wrench gouged the ball flange and the ball mount. This would not have happened if the ball mount had an inset for holding the hex flange of the ball. I could have just used a wrench on the nut and not had to hold the ball stationary while doing so. Improve this product please. No one likes gouges on their ball flange or ball mount. 428241

Not much to say, it's a ball mount. Curt makes quality stuff. Etrailer.com makes is easy to choose with a quick tutorial on mounts and sizes. Helped me tremendously because of my Jeep Wrangler Four Door having a 4" lift kit and monster tires. I would purchase from them again and again! 313000

  • How to Pick Out the Correct Rise Drop Ball Mount to Tow a Trailer Level
I got all of the pictures you submitted and attached them to this page. However, I am still a little unsure of what you are looking for. The best recommendation I can make for you would be to check out the link I attached that details how to pick out the correct rise/drop ball mount you need to tow your trailer level. It's kind of hard to tell, but it looks like your current ball mount is a 7 inch drop ball mount which would be similar to the # C45100.

  • What is the Actual Drop of the Curt Ball Mount C45100
We recently went and measured the Curt ball mount part # C45100 and the drop is 7-1/2 inches and rise is 6-1/4 inches. If you check out the review video I attached you can see our demo guy measure the drop at the 1:47 mark.

  • Recommendation On A Ball Mount That Can Fix Unlevel Towing
Determining the proper rise and drop needed for a ball mount can be done with two measurements and a little math. On a level surface, first measure from the top edge of your receiver opening to the ground to get your hitch height. Then, measure from the bottom of the trailer coupler to the ground to get the trailer hitch height. The difference between these two numbers will be the amount of rise and drop you will need for your vehicle and trailer. I have linked help article that explains...

  • Can Hitch or Ball Mount Be Drilled for Additional Hitch Pin Hole
Ball mounts like the Curt # C45100 are available in various lengths. This one happens to be 13-inches long, longer than some. Longer ball mounts are needed, for example, in cases of a truck having a slide in camper in the bed, or when using a towing-style bike rack. You do not want to drill your hitch or your ball mount as this will void the product warranty. A slightly longer ball mount poses no issues for your towing application.

  • Ball Mount Recommendation for 6 inches of Rise to Tow Trailer Level
Using a 6 inch rise ball mount does not cause any safety issues. If anything using the correct rise ball mount allows you to prevent the biggest safety issue which is towing an unlevel trailer. The Curt ball mount part # C45100 would work well for you as it has a 6-1/4 inch rise. For a 2 inch ball we have the part # 63845 and then for a 2-5/16 inch ball we have the part # 63847.

  • Ball Mount Recommendation for 7 inches of Drop
For a 7 inch drop ball mount the closest and best option will be the part # C45100. This is a 7-1/2 inch drop that would get you close enough to level to have the trailer towed safely. It's better to be a tiny bit to nose-down than nose-up as it's commonly the nose-up situations that cause sway. For a 2 inch ball you would need part # 63845 or for a 2-5/16 inch ball the part # 63847.

  • Does Tongue Weight Sag Get Factored In When Picking Out Rise/Drop Ball Mount
This is a really great question! So ideally you have the trailer sitting as level as possible when you are towing. So that means that if your vehicle suspension is going to sag with the tongue weight of your trailer on the ball mount you'd want to compensate for that with the amount of rise/drop ball mount you select. How this normally works out is that you determine the drop needed (in your case 8 inches) and then go with a ball mount slightly higher like the Curt part # C45100 which...
