  • Monitor and pedestal height: 3"
  • Wire harness length: 19' 7"
  • Screen resolution: 480 x 234 pixels
    • 300 TV lines
  • 1-Year limited warranty

Note: If your vehicle is not equipped with a factory tow package, you will need to hardwire the camera to your vehicle's reverse lights. 2013 and newer vehicles may require connection to an external power source.

Designed for towing but great for everyday use, the Smart Hitch backup camera improves safety by providing you with visual cues and audible alerts when you are backing up. It also simplifies the towing process by making it a one-person job to align your trailer hitch ball with your coupler.

Push-Button Controls and SmartZone Sensors

Switch between Hitch Mode and Everyday Mode by simply pushing a button on the side of the monitor. In Everyday Mode, the monitor will display a grid in red, yellow, and green that alerts you to the distance of objects on the display with red indicating that the object is very close to your vehicle and green indicating the object is at a safe distance. This grid works in conjunction with SmartZone sensors that beep to alert you of objects and distances. The beeps intensify as you get closer to an object.

In Hitch Mode, the monitor provides center-line assistance for easy hookup to your trailer coupler. The grid creates a target as you back up, ensuring that you keep your vehicle in line with the coupler as you get closer. This allows one person to hitch up to a trailer without the need for a spotter.

Easy Installation in 3 Steps

The Smart Hitch camera plugs inline with your factory 7-way, RV-style trailer connector, maintaining the function of the trailer connector at the rear of your vehicle. If your vehicle is not equipped with a factory tow package, you will need to hardwire the camera to your vehicle's reverse lights.

The camera and sensors are connected to a bracket that installs behind your license plate. Simply remove your license plate, mount the bracket, and re-install the license plate using the included hardware. You can adjust the angle of the camera and the sensors to ensure maximum visibility.

To complete installation, run the wire from the camera mounting bracket to the monitor in the cab of your vehicle. This wire provides power to the monitor. The monitor can be mounted to your windshield, dashboard, or center console with foam tape. Remember to mount the monitor somewhere where it will not obstruct visibility as you drive. Some vehicles may require an extension harness (sold separately) to complete the connection between the monitor in their cab and the camera mounting bracket at the year of their vehicle.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera Review

Speaker 1: Today we are going to take a look at the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera and Hitch Aligner System, part number HM50002. This is what our camera screen looks like inside the vehicle. When we put our vehicle in reverse our screen comes on and it's going to have grid lines to give us distance markers. The camera includes two modes. In hitch mode the monitor provides center line assistance for easy hookup to your trailer coupler. The grid creates a target as you back up, ensuring that you keep your vehicle in line with a coupler as you get closer.Use everyday mode for help spotting rear facing obstacles and other drivers and pedestrians.

The colors indicate distance to an object. Red is zero to one and a half feet. Yellow is one and half to three and a half feet. Green is three and a half feet to five and a half feet. You also get audible beeps that increase in intensity as you approach an object.

The monitor is a 3.5 inch display that mounts easily to your windshield, dashboard, or center console with the included foam tape. The camera itself is a license plate mounted system. The camera and sensors are adjustable to ensure maximum visibility and object detection behind your vehicle. It is an easy installation, it simply plugs in line with your existing seven-way trailer connector with no splicing. This lets you retain use of your factory seven-way plug at your bumper. Then you just have to route the wire up to your vehicle's dashboard.

Compared to a wireless system like the Rampage Wireless Backup Camera, part number RA7710, a monitor is provided so you do not have to use your smartphone or tablet as a monitor. Additionally, with the wire connections to the monitor, you get a more reliable signal to ensure you are always connected to your camera. Also, with the Hopkins System, there are no batteries to charge or maintain. One of customers, going by the name Farmer Jim, had this to say. "This is the best invention since the shirt pocket, kind of got tired of trying to back up 10 times to hit the trailer ball, taking hand signals from the wife is even worse, until this little gadget came along. It works great.

The main video wire is a little too short. Might go ahead and buy an extension cable if they make one. Other than that gripe, I love it." Longer vehicles may require a harness extension which is sold separately with part number HM3100504060 for five feet. An HM3100504061 for 25 feet. That completes our look at the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera and Hitch Aligner System, part number HM50002.

This was my first time installing a backup camera and it went pretty well. I installed it on a Dodge Ram 2500 to make it easier to hitch up my trailers and see if anyone is behind me when I'm backing up like my 7 year old grandson. I did need several tie wraps to secure the cable to the underside of the truck and made one small hole in the floor pan under the driver's seat to feed the cable to the monitor. Pretty straightforward. Pretty happy with the whole thing. Works good at night and has a decent color image with guiding lines when used to hook up the trailers. Recommended! 571113

The camera and monitor are great. However, I’m having issues keeping the monitor stuck to my windshield. The heavy duty tape supplied with the kit is not strong enough. Disappointed. 572835

Comments

I never could get the tape to work in the windshield. I rerouted the monitor so it sits on the dash. If your install requires a windshield mount on two cars now, I wouldn’t recommend this product.

Just got the back up cam and was eager to put it in. Instructions were very clear (i have restored a few vintage mustangs in the past 5 yrs so this didn't look too hard!!). Only problem i ran into is that my particular 7 pin plug DID NOT separate as in the videos (I have a 2004 Toyota Tundra). I actually unplugged the harness from the truck and took it to my friend who is the parts guy at the Toyo dealership. He wasn't sure either and had to take it back to a service guy-negative on mine separating and being able to T-in with the supplied hardware :( So that was a bummer, but since i had the the harness out, it made it easier to splice in the wires for the camera (instructions were clear how to do this as well). I opted not to use their crimp splice connectors and instead used my own connectors with shrink tubing which i felt would be a bit better. As others have said, longest part of the job is getting under the truck and routing the wire which isn't a big deal (wear some glasses so you don't get crud in your eyes!). I ordered the extension cable as i wasn't sure if i was going to need or not. Didn't need it (i have the crew cab) and after much contemplation i decided to mount it on the small area below the radio that looks like a sunglasses cubby. It was perfect, as the cubby just popped out, so i was able to take it to the workbench and drill it/install it there, then just bring it back in the truck and pop it in!. So, as far as the backup camera goes, I've had a backup camera on our previous rig, a 2010 silverado, that the stealership put in, and we have a factory b/u cam on our 2015 corolla. This camera actually puts both of those to shame. It is WAY clearer than the corolla cam, and about twice as clear as the one we had on the silverado (which by the way was over $500 5 yrs ago!) I am not really impressed by much as i enjoy working on cars for fun, but this camera really exceeded my expectations as far as clarity. the b/u cam in the corolla doesn't have the warning beep, which i totally like. i also like the trailer feature (i have a boat and the silverado didn't have that view, so i'm excited to try that out). So, if i didn't have to remove the harness and take it in for a double check, probably would have taken about 1 hour and i am anal about the way stuff looks/installs. So, GREAT product-more than satisfied! 236164

It works great!!, main video wire is a little too short so you guys with 4 door trucks are gonna probably come up short if you're mounting the monitor by your rear view mirror, I have a 02 Dodge standard cab w/9' flat bed and it took every bit of the video cable to make the stretch, might go ahead and buy an extension cable if they make one. Other than that gripe ,,, I love it!!! 147529

Camera is a year old now and working great, had some problems with hot temps melting the glue from the adhesive which caused it the camera to fall off the windshield but good epoxy fixed that. performance of the camera is great for the low cost. i would recommend this product if youre looking for and inexpensive back up camera.

I found that the video of installing the HM50002 on a 2009 GMC Sierra at Etrailer.com was more useful than the written instructions that came with the product. Step 1, item 1) of the written instructions that applies to vehicles with OEM 7 Blade Tow Package Connector is in error, e.g., item1) Connect installation cables (D) to monitor (A) and route the installation cable (D) to the back of the vehicle stopping at the back side of the OEM connector on vehicle (Fig. 2). Note: One should not connect the installation cable (D) to monitor (A) at this point. The video shows the proper method starting at the back of the vehicle, as shown in Step 2. Install the license plate bracket and camera. Once these are installed then one should continue with Step 1, items 2), 3), and 4). Before one begins routing the Installation cable from rear to front of vehicle, a leader, such as, an 8" zip tie should be securely taped to the monitor end of the cable. At this point, one must then route the end of the cable that goes to the monitor from the rear of the vehicle to the front of the vehicle following the existing cable until one locates a grommet on the floor of the vehicle just in front of the driver's seat. One should use zip ties to secure the installation cable to the existing cable as one proceeds forward toward the front of the vehicle. Make a hole on the edge of an existing grommet, and route the cable inside the vehicle. Remove the tape and zip tie from the monitor end of the cable. Pull in the rest of the cable. Route the Installation cable to the monitor's cable, and plug them together. Based on the amount of cable inside the vehicle determine where to locate the monitor. Secure the monitor to the desired location. Remove backing from foam tape and press down firmly to ensure the monitor is secure. One can also use Velcro to secure the monitor. Proceed to Step 3, item 1). Note: When running the Installation cable from rear to front on my 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 Z71, I had to remove and reinstall the driver side rear tire, so that I could secure the Installation cable with a zip tie next to the existing cable. 275058

This camera works great, makes it easy to back up to things, trailers, tight parking spots or walls. The only complaint I have is the monitor needs a better ball mount, it does not stay in the position you put it in, you constantly have to adjust it. 565855

Installed my smart hitch camera today and it was easy to do, even for an old guy. The hardest part was getting under the truck to run the monitor cable. Whole process took about an hour. I have an 05 Ram 1500 with factory tow package, however my 7way has a square plug behind the bumper so I had to splice my wire instead of using the T-plug but was still easy to do. The camera works great and I am very pleased with it. Now when I hookup my boat or my RV I won't have to have my wife help. I also won't have to get out and check where the ball is 2 or 3 times again. The videos etrailer have up shows exactly what you have to do in great detail so if you are thinking about getting one and installing it yourself, go for it! 173389

Well the install was easy I only have the 4 pin attachment plug so I had to cut the 7 way connectors off and just used the two leads red and black spliced the red into the reverse light +feed. Grounded the Black negative wire to the chasee ran the cable to the camera .Installed the license and camera unit adjusted the sensors and it worked as far as rating goes I gave it 3 stars. Now shipping I paid for two day shipping on the 23 a Wednesday and it arrived on the 28 that Monday I informed them that I could have just did the free shipping and could have kept me [$] and it would have arrived the same time on the 28 . I received an e mail telling me they will add the [$] back to my account . It was that simple .Now we just have to see how the system preforms . I'm happy 426485

The installation instructions were easy enough , the product works good .The screen was smaller than I thought it would be ,but it has a good picture and it turned out to be perfect for the size of the dash area without blocking visability . I called Hopkins MFG. support because I thought I had a malfuntioning unit, they were eager to send a replacement , but I found the problem was low electric power while I was setting up the unit ,battery went to low for camera to operate . With vehicle running NO more problems . I bought and installed 2 units I like them both . 167430

I purchased the hard wired back up camera because I wanted a good clear picture and did not want to worry about wifi or Bluetooth interference. The camera took about an hour total to install. I adjusted the sensors, screwed the camera and sensor assembly along with the license plate onto the back of the truck. Pushed the tab on the 7 way plug connecter to take the OEM coupler apart, put the jumper in place and then just routed the wires towards the cab. I cut a "Plus sign" slit in the grommet in the floor, this grommet was about 8" from the sill plate and about even with the front edge of the front door opening. I had to pull the LH front sill plate off as well as the LH kick panel, and pulled the floor matt back. I do not have carpet in my truck but the process would be the same. I ran the wiring through the grommet and then up the LH A-pillar and above the headliner. I had to use the 5' jumper wire in order to run it up the A-pillar. I mounted the display screen in the top left corner of my windshield, very convenient yet out of the way. The display is very clear and the sensors read very well, when the beeps go to a "constant on" I am about 4" from an object. This seems close but the bumper is about 4 to 5" deep where the plate and camera assembly are mounted. The only thing I that gave me trouble was squeezing the OEM 7 way coupler onto the jumper wire that was provided, I originally installed the entire unit and it quit working, vibration when driving had caused the coupler to pull apart just enough to kill the camera. This was an easy fix and it works perfect now. I would definitely recommend this camera to a friend. 173009

I installed a wired backup camera in my 2013 Silverado. There was an excellent online video which took me through every step. The camera works beautifully. The installation was easier than I expected. My only problem was in figuring out how to release the latch holding together the two parts of the seven pin connector on the truck. 224363

Easy kit to install! Great picture as it's a wired system so no flickering. Simple to unplug the factory harness and plug the Hopkins harness in. Then run the wire up under the bed/cab and zip tie in place to keep from flopping around. I have an '04 Silverado Crew cab with a 6 1/2' bed and I ran the wire up into the engine compartment and thru a grommet in the upper drivers side of the engine bay. Mounted the screen in the center console area by the cig lighter and had about a 1/2' of spare wire left... Great value! 143120

No, did not need the extension cable. Placing the screen up on top of the dash and Im betting you would....I did ask for and receive the extension tho, just didnt need it. But - I think Ill use it as Im planning on modifying the camera location by putting it up on the tailgate handle to get more of a downward view of the receiver. The lens as it is now is too level with the receiverbumper so it has to be real close before its there... System is still a great bargain!

Well I finally got around to do the review, and let first say install took a little while couple of hrs only because I wanted to hide everything ,I am mechanically inclined and have the panels tools to remove everything and do it correctly. I purchased the extension wire for 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited and actually not needing it the length of cable it was definitely long enough (with about 1 ft) extra tucked under the driver door panel, but guess depending on where you locate the monitor I mounted mine in corner of the windshield. Wish they would of have extended the Red wire for the reverse light (8 -10 inches ) longer I don't like extra splicing. Then finished the install and start it up throw that sucker in reverse and nothing on the screen!! My Bad reverse light wire had a bad connection!! (Lol) corrected it and Presto works great , whatever ground, power you hook up leave that area open to double check your connections... As far as backing up this thing is awesome gets me right under the coupler ( wife thinks I'm a bad***) ..I drive a Tractor trailer for a living little different hooking to a pin on a trailer, but anyhow this camera system is great beats getting out of the truck 3-4 times!! And night time is just as great!! Oh Thank you etrailer for the instructional videos, very detailed...I wouldrecommend this back up system to a friend!! 527096

installed on a 2008 dodge ram standard cab with 6 foot bed, still needed about 2 feet more of cable for top of windshield mount so glad I ordered extra cable. This is mostly for trailer hook up so I wired with a switch in cab to turn on when I wanted. This will also allow me to turn on when driving so I can check may trailer load and make sure everything on trailer is secure a feature I think is really good. Ran wiring inside frame no problem. etrailer videos are really good for learning how to do things as instructions from Hopkins is only 2 pages. very happy so far and plan on trailer hook being a snap from now on. 150935

How did you do the wiring? Did you somehow use the T-adapter at the 7-pin connection, or do it all custom? Id like to do a similar set-up but dont want to reinvent the wheel if someone else has figured out how to do it! Thanks

I cut off the T adapter, for my hook up only needed to ground camera like in video, and power to it which I ran from a switch in the cab of truck, make sure you use a fuse where you come off of battery for power. I do not remember which one of the videos show not using the T adapter I believe it is for the dodge as mine cannot use it anyway more questions let me know

for kevin s. yes just power from battery to switch then to camera and ground any handy place on frame then their cable form camera to screen in cab, one thing I learned was do not try to stick screen on the rough stuff that is around some of the windshields nowdays will not stay. am thinking of moving camera to top of my topper to give better view as license plate is pretty low but show hitch okay for hookup

Followed the installation instructions from the video provided on the website and it was a breeze. I recommend using conduit to protect the wire at the beginning and end of the feed through the frame. I also used it to protect the wire and connections at the rear of the vehicle (tape connections as suggested in video). I mounted my camera in the center dashboard console and hid the wire for a custom installation. I ran the wire along the knee console under the steering column and fed the wire upwards. I pulled the front dash console which requires using a plastic tool so you don't mess up the dash (very easy to do-check youtube). I drilled a hole in the top of the center console and fed the monitor wire down and connected the wire coming from the camera and tucked above the radio. This can only be done if you remove the face of the radio. Again, make sure you use a plastic tool to remove the radio face and watch a video. It looks great in the vehicle. 167508

I'm pleasantly surprised by the ease of installation of this product and it does exactly what I want it to do. I have a 2013 Chevy Silverado 2500, and after climbing under the bumper I was able to twist out the 7-way/pole connector and slip in the provided connector, then string the wire up the chassis. I did have a problem finding and entrance point into the cab, then I simply drilled a 1/2" hole in a grommet under the drivers seat and then popped up the trim panel at the door and snaked it up the edge and managed to tuck everything in and pop it out at the dash over the steering wheel. One note... I barely had enough wire from the connector in back to stretch it to the monitor to reach the dash at the very left where the wire came up so if you want to tuck it into the headliner and out at your rear view mirror, buy the extender wire. I have an 8' bed and a crew cab, but I still think with other body styles it would still be a good idea to get the extender wire for that application. Gives a great shot of the trailer hitch sliding right under my trailer... No more hopping out 5 times to get it exactly right... 138205

I bought this back-up camera for a Chevy Express van conversion RV. It may work well, time will tell, but do not try to mount it in the rear license plate area of the Chevy Express Van. The license plate light interferes with placement. Choose instead the rear bumper to mount this camera. I wish the Hopkins company would be truthful about this "license plate camera mount" not fitting in the license plate area of a Chevy Express Van. 134090

I Installed camera #HM50002 in my 2002 F150 supercrew. Ford does not have the relay in the fuse box for the trailer backup light to work with the factory 7 pin connector on the 2002 models. You will need a relay for the older Fords. I got mine at Pep Boys. ( BWD accessory relay Part no. R3146 for $15.00.) I hooked it up to the OEM 7 pin connector with the T adapter connector furnished with the camera. I zip tied the cable to the frame rail and removed the floor thresh hold for the front and rear doors. They come off easily with a large flathead screwdriver. There is a grommet in the thresh hold box section you can see from under the truck that you can run the cable thru once you remove the grommet. The grommet hole is about 4 inches from the rear end of the rear door threshold. I Ran the cable through the hole and pushed it from the rear to the front inside the box section. I sliced the grommet about half way down for the cable and pushed the grommet back in. I then removed the front left kick panel and pulled the weather stripping away from the floor up to the dash and ran the cable to above the dash. From there I ran the cable under the front of the headliner and placed the camera just above the rear view mirror since I had plenty of cable to mount it there. The cable slides under the front of the headliner easily with a gentle push with your fingers. I pushed the weather stripping in place, and snapped in the plastic floor threshold covers and left kick panel. I then zip tied the extra wire length from the T connector up out of the way. All wiring and cables completely hidden! Since mine is a lifted 4X4, I had no need for a lift as I had plenty of room to run the cable from under the truck. Be careful with the license plate as it is a close fit. Make sure you push the wires out of the way on both sides so you don’t pinch or cut the wires in the license plate mount. In the middle of fuse box picture you will see 2 relays, a blank space and another relay. The blank space is where the R3146 relay goes. It's an great back up camera. I love it! 238396

This Unit is exactly what I needed, this unit has sensors for distance detection and warns you with beeps as your getting closer to an object, the camera unit installation is Farley easy and holds the License plate (Plate needs to be alone frames wont let you install the camera / Sensor unit what's nice of this unit is if you have and EOM 7 way Then you can use the tee adaptor that comes with it which lets you tap into the backup circuit without having to go into the rear taillight and tie into the backup light. the sticky part is running the wiring from the back to the front of the truck but with patience I got it done, had to drill a small hole under the drivers seat ( actually there is a existing hole through the metal part the seems to be sealed by some black sealer) I sealed around the wire I installed with black silicone sealant, then ran the wire under the carpet over to the driver side door up the molding and to the let side of the dash as shown in the photo. it works great now I can backup in the drive way without fear of hitting the garage door as it beeps as I get close to the door, and it can be switched to a tapered sense so you can use it to line up with a trailer hitch without getting in and out of the truck to do so. I like the unit. 575488

This review pertains to the installation in a 2011 Ram 2500 diesel. Watched the video for the 2009 2500 series which helped considerably. I was thankful that the trailer plug hookup was plug and play with no cutting or splicing. After the initial hook up to the trailer plug I attached the video screen and placed the truck in reverse just to see if there were any problems; none were observed. Next I placed the license tag holder/rear sensors and camera then the screen next to and above the rear view mirror on the left side as shown in the video. I then ran the 5' extra screen cord under the headliner and behind the left grab panel so I would not have to stuff all the extra video cord under the headliner. The grab handle post was loosened by removing the mounting screws (note: they are a 10mm size and the bolt covers pry up as follows: the top one from the bottom and the bottom one from the top). The video cable was run along side of the left side frame beside electrical wiring. The left side door sill was removed along with the kick panel. A hole was drilled in the floor, per the video, with a 1/2" drill bit. Connection was made with the cord from the screen and the extra cord was left in the floor just before the kick panel. Was plenty of room to do that. The entire operation took about an hour without rushing. I probably spent more time trying to place the screen exactly the way I wanted it than any of the other steps. 164371

I just installed the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera system and like it very much. I have a fishing boat & trailer, a utility trailer, and a RV camping trailer and this will make hooking up to them a breeze. My neighbor also has a fishing boat & trailer and I showed it to him. He had to get his wife and show it to her also. He said it was going on his Christmas wish list! It took me about 2 hours to install, with 90% of the time used to run the wire from the back to the windshield. I then had to adjust the camera position as it showed clearly the hitch and about 20 feet behind the truck, but I wanted it to show more distance behind the truck. I was in a parking lot last night and it did not give me as good a look behind me as i desired, so I loosened it and tilted it up a little more. It works great now. It did pick up the hitch ball with the backup sensors and sounded a constant alarm, so I loosened them and tilted them up a little also, but they do not move nearly as easily as the camera does. I had to move them rather forceably and tighten the screws before letting them go to prevent them from dropping back to their original position. The instruction sheet shows some adjustment positions for the sensors, but does not give enough information to tell you how it is suppose to be done, so I just had to guess. I probably did not do it the way they intended, but they did not say, so it works anyway. My truck is a Dodge Ram 1500 and I watched the video on your web site showing how to install it on different vehicles, and it was really helpful. I probably would not have figured out how to get the wire inside the cab without the video, but it was "spot on". My photos show the camera installation, the installation on the front windshield, the wiring connection to the factory installed wiring harness, the attachment of part of the wire, and the entry of the wire into the vehicle below the driver"s seat. As your video showed, I then ran the wire beneath the carpet to the rubber door molding, and behind the plastic to the left of the windshield and out at the top. I had planned to install it beside the rear view mirror, but I could not hide the connection so I stopped by the side and installed it at the top instead. I was initially concerned about the small size of the monitor, but it is color and shows up very adequately. 161844

This is a wonderful product. I am so glad I chose the HOPKINS HM50002 over the other brands that I looked at. I am not good at anything electrical but the instructions were so clear that I installed it in a hour. The only thing I needed was 20 wire ties. When I made the last connection to the backup light and put it reverse I was amazed how good the image was. I tried it right away and it was perfect. The camera put me right under the trailer hitch the first time with no adjusting. With the Ford F150 two door the extension cable is not needed. I really appreciate the wonderful help I received. THANKS. I fully recomend the HM5000. Now I want have to get out of my truck over and over to connect a trailer. SO GOOD! 563504

I installed this backup camera on my 2006 F250 Crew Cab 6.5' bed, but I only used it for a couple of months before I sold the truck. It worked great and was a very straight forward install. I liked the coupler for the 7-pin connector as I didn't have to directly wire it to the backup lights. Just connect the coupler and run the camera cable to the cab. I mounted the display to the left of the steering wheel near the headlight switch. It was out of the way, yet it was easy to see and control. I was lucky to have a hole in the floor with a rubber grommet already installed on the driver side, so it was just a matter of cutting a hole in the grommet for the cable and sealing it with some silicone. I had enough cable to reach the dash, but if I wanted to mount it above the windshield, I would have needed an extension. My truck is about 20' long total. I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 because of the quality of some of the plastic components. I feel they could have been made better. Hey...for the price, though, this camera was pretty darn good. 168860

George, Today I just had the camera installed in my truck. I used to have a plug-in version. It did not last very long. It always shorted out. This was amazing when I turned the truck on and was ready to back out of the dealership. The clarity was excellent. Once I figure out what settings I want it will be wonderful. The only thing I don't know is that will it drain the battery on the truck if the truck is not on. Is there a way I need to turn it off overnight or when I don't want to use it? Other than that I love this product. thanks again. 521754

If the Hopkins Smart Hitch back-up camera system is installed according to the instructions, it will only be operable when the vehicle is shifted in reverse as it gets its power directly from the reverse light circuit. If the vehicle is in park, no power will be reaching the camera system, so no worries about your battery getting drained.

Arrived in good time in good order. Installed on my 2002 Ford F250 Extended Cab Short Bed. Disconnecting the factory connector was a minor pain. Fishing the cable to the cab was the next worse part and would be easier if one has access to a lift. Cab access was through a floor grommet near the accelerator. I ran up behind the dash beside the steering column. The display was mounted on a bare spot on the dash face. This keeps it out of the sun and excessive heating which seems to cause issues for some. The supplied cable was just long enough and I didn't need the 5' extension I had ordered. Anywhere else and it would be needed. The 7-pin connector needed a tweak to seat completely and the unit came to life. Works well and I like it. The camera location may need some protection with a shield if there is a lot of bed debris from hauling sand or gravel etc. The left sensor partially blocks the spare tire mechanism access hole but not a big deal. Happy so far. 294705

The Hopkins camera has been woking fine through heat and cold which was a concern for some in reading the reviews of others.Great for trailer hook up but the screen is a bit small for older eyes and not really reliable as a back-up viewer although this was never the intent.

I had researched backup camera systems for my 2006 Dodge Ram 1500. I had gone in to one of the electronic stores to actually see what my options were. When I came to etrailer.com and saw the Hopkins Smart Hitch, I was impressed with the price and the features of the camera. I had looked at Garmin, Rand McNally, and a few others that were over twice the cost and had fewer options. I called etrailer to make sure the unit would fit in my truck, Michelle was very helpful and took my order. The unit was shipped that day and was delivered within 3 to 4 days. I had it professionally installed, though I know I could have done it myself. I am really pleased with all aspects of this camera. The audible signal (not available on some of the higher priced cameras) is really helpful - and the green, yellow, red bars give a true perspective of the proximity of obstacles. Being able to toggle between trailer hitch mode, and everyday backup mode is as easy as pushing a button. I really don't think you'll find a better camera for the price. And, etrailer's customer service is excellent. 316277

Thank you for the follow up. I do like the camera, and it has worked really well. The only thing that has changed is that I dont get the visual marker lines showing up any more. They come on for the first few seconds and then turn off. The camera works perfectly other than that.

About a year ago I purchased a Hopkins SmartHitch backup cameras and alarm system. Within six months it failed to sound the alarm when approaching an object and the hitch lines on the display would only display for a few seconds. Unable to locate the date of purchase and going through the hassle of contacting e-trailer or Hopkins I continued using it to connect to the trailer using the monitor only. Today I received an e-mail from (Laura) at e-trailer letting me know that I had purchased the Hopkins SmartHitch about a year ago and wanted to follow up to make sure I like the product after owning it for a year. I took the opportunity to mention this to the rep of e-trailer who gave me the number of (Kriss Carter) the Hopkins tech. Asking if I could send him a copy of the e-mail I had received from e-trailer he told me that he would send me a new unit. Could not believe the ease of getting the unit replaced. Should have called six months ago. 321081

The camera and guide markings work great for hitching a trailer up by one person. The connections would have been really easy if I had an OEM 7 pin plug, which I didn't, but it wasn't really a big deal. I agree with several other reviewers that the included cables are kind of short, but long enough for my application. I think you can order extensions, if necessary. 129024

Installed easily. Operated as advertised and is a great help in hitching up to my popup. Now the rest of the story. I lost my hitch lines on the display and called e trailer to see if they could help me with the date I bought the unit. This was just before Labor Day . I then called Hopkins with a description of the trouble and He decided that trouble was in the license plate holder and shipped me a new one not even knowing how long I had the unit ( 2 weeks over a year). Tuesday I got an E-Mail from e trailer with the date I had ordered the unit and word that he was sending me an authorization to return unit for testing. I have spent money with these people to outfit my Ranger and Honda civic with trailer hitches, brake controller and wire harness for both. I had a problem and they got on it fast. Will continue to do business with them in the future and recommend them to anyone for all your towing needs without reservation. One Happy Customer. 292211

Very useful backup camera system. First of all let me say my experience with etrailer had been great, excellent service. I purchased this product for my 2003 Lexus LX 470. The T in trailer harness connecter is a great idea, but unfortunately does not work with my truck. So I took the next best choice. Splice in the wire to back up lights. The instructions are clear. I routed the monitor cable from the tailgate inside the vehicle, clean look. Monitor sits on top of the dash, driver left corner. Perfect fit. Hooked up everything, put the car in reverse. Picture quality is excellent, it works great. I was a little concerned about the monitor size, but now after using it, it's just right. Factory setting at 3 were right for my truck. Very happy with this purchase. I also purchased another unit for my other car. Now a couple of tips. One little thing which is my suggestion. I did use a little beefy rubber grommet, available at HD. To mount the license plate I used black Alan head screws, look nice . All the best with your project. 729552

I just received my order and I have to say that I am surprised it got here so fast and was packed well. I will say however the screen on the camera is really small. I was expecting a larger screen. • Recommended Hopkins Backup Camera with 3-1/2 Inch Display
  • For a backup camera system very similar to the Hopkins # HM60195VA that you referenced, I recommend taking a look at the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera # HM50002. Unlike the system you mentioned, this does include a 3-1/2 inch color monitor that will provide a large, static-free image with clear definition. The screen will also display color-coded fields to indicate the distance to objects and can mount right to your windshield, dashboard, or center console with the included foam...

  • Do Any Wireless Observation Camera Systems Integrate with OEM Vehicle Dashboard Display
  • Although we do offer many brands and styles of backup/observation camera systems these are all either complete free-standing systems that have their own monitor or they are designed to use a smartphone as the display. None of the aftermarket camera systems we offer are designed to integrate with OEM vehicle displays. This is a good question that is asked often. The system I tend to recommend for owners of longer travel trailers is the SwiftHitch # SH03D wireless dual camera system with...

  • Can Hopkins Electronics Backup Camera HM50002 Connect to Existing Vehicle Camera System
  • The Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera and Hitch Aligner # HM50002 is a free-standing system that does not connect to any existing camera/monitor on your motorhome. This could be installed on an off-center license plate frame but a better option for your application is a wireless system like the # SH02DIGITAL system from Swift Hitch. This will provide more flexibility for the camera's position. The # SH02DIGITAL offers wireless operation for easy installation, a 8-hour camera battery...

  • Can Both Hopkins 5th Wheel 90-Degree Wiring Harness and Hopkins Smart Hitch Be Installed Together
  • It is possible for you to install both the Hopkins Endurance 5th Wheel/Gooseneck 90-Degree Wiring Harness, # HM41158, and the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera and Hitch Aligner System, # HM50002. The Hopkins Smart Hitch has alternative installation instructions that bypasses using the OEM 7-way. The instructions are for an installation without OEM connecter. Since, this connector will be used to install the Hopkins 90-degree wiring harness, you will then need to use the alternative...

  • Recommendation on a Rear Backup Camera and Hitch Aligner That Will Fit A 2017 Ram 1500 Truck
  • The Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera will fit on the your 2017 Ram 1500 truck. The camera uses a T-connection that ties into the your trucks 7-way trailer connection at the rear of the vehicle. The connection will power both the camera and 3.5 inch color monitor. The SmartZone sensors provide an audible beep to alert you of the distance and direction of objects behind your vehicle when in reverse. If by chance you do not have the 7-way connector, the instructions also explains how...

  • Backup Camera Recommendation for a Vehicle with a 4-Way Trailer Harness
  • The reason reverse cameras like the part # HM50002 are available for vehicles with 7-ways and not 4-ways is because 7-ways have a reverse light circuit built into them which makes them easy to use for installing the camera since that circuit is already there. 4-ways don't have reverse light circuits so a camera designed for a 4-way wouldn't be as practical. You can still install the # HM50002 on a vehicle without a 7-way though. You would just need to hardwire the camera to the reverse...

  • Back Up Camera Recommendation for a 2002 Ford F-250 Super Duty
  • Yes, the round connector that comes with the Hopkins Backup Camera part # HM50002 will fit the round 7-way connector you have on your 2002 Ford F-250. I attached an install video that shows this camera being installed on a similar 2003 Ford F-250 as yours as well.

  • How to Mount Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera # HM50002 to View Picture Right Side Up
  • On the mounting piece of your Hopkins Backup Camera # HM50002 there is a screw that holds the mounting piece in position. If you loosen the screw it will enable the mounting piece to be adjustable and from there you can determine the correct mounting position for your camera. In the video attached I showed you the location of the screw and how the mounting piece adjusts.

  • Installation of Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera # HM50002 in 2006 Toyota Tundra
  • The type of 7-way on your 2006 Toyota Tundra can vary depending on whether it was factory installed or part of an aftermarket installation. You can check the rear of the 7-way to see if it has a round U.S. Car Connector at the rear, held in place with two locking tabs. If so the Hopkins Smart Hitch system will simply plug in inline with that connector to access the ground and reverse light circuits that activate the camera. If you do not have a detachable connector you'll need to identify...
