Specs:

  • Monitor face dimensions: 4-1/4" wide x 2-3/16" tall
  • Monitor and pedestal height: 3"
  • Wire harness length: 19' 7"
  • Screen resolution: 480 x 234 pixels
    • 300 TV lines
  • 1-Year limited warranty

Note: If your GMC Sierra Classic is not equipped with a factory tow package, you will need to hardwire the camera to your GMC Sierra Classic's reverse lights. 2013 and newer GMC Sierra Classics may require connection to an external power source.

Designed for towing but great for everyday use, the Smart Hitch backup camera improves safety by providing you with visual cues and audible alerts when you are backing up. It also simplifies the towing process by making it a one-person job to align your trailer hitch ball with your coupler.

Push-Button Controls and SmartZone Sensors

Switch between Hitch Mode and Everyday Mode by simply pushing a button on the side of the monitor. In Everyday Mode, the monitor will display a grid in red, yellow, and green that alerts you to the distance of objects on the display with red indicating that the object is very close to your GMC Sierra Classic and green indicating the object is at a safe distance. This grid works in conjunction with SmartZone sensors that beep to alert you of objects and distances. The beeps intensify as you get closer to an object.

In Hitch Mode, the monitor provides center-line assistance for easy hookup to your trailer coupler. The grid creates a target as you back up, ensuring that you keep your GMC Sierra Classic in line with the coupler as you get closer. This allows one person to hitch up to a trailer without the need for a spotter.

Easy Installation in 3 Steps

The Smart Hitch camera plugs inline with your factory 7-way, RV-style trailer connector, maintaining the function of the trailer connector at the rear of your GMC Sierra Classic. If your GMC Sierra Classic is not equipped with a factory tow package, you will need to hardwire the camera to your GMC Sierra Classic's reverse lights.

The camera and sensors are connected to a bracket that installs behind your license plate. Simply remove your license plate, mount the bracket, and re-install the license plate using the included hardware. You can adjust the angle of the camera and the sensors to ensure maximum visibility.

To complete installation, run the wire from the camera mounting bracket to the monitor in the cab of your GMC Sierra Classic. This wire provides power to the monitor. The monitor can be mounted to your windshield, dashboard, or center console with foam tape. Remember to mount the monitor somewhere where it will not obstruct visibility as you drive. Some GMC Sierra Classics may require an extension harness (sold separately) to complete the connection between the monitor in their cab and the camera mounting bracket at the year of their GMC Sierra Classic.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Backup Cameras and Alarms HM50002 Review

Today we're gonna take a look at the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera and Hitch Aligner System. This backup camera takes the guesswork out of hooking up your trailer and driving in reverse. It includes everything shown here on the table. It'll include this color monitor with the pedestal bracket. Includes the license plate bracket with the camera in the middle and the sensors on the end. Also, it has this 20 foot wire harness with the seven way T connector on it.

The mounting hardware and a nice installation guide on how to install everything. We'll start with the monitor here. It's the three and a half inch size color monitor, provides a large static free image with crystal clear definition. The screen resolution on this is about 480 x 234 pixels, and it will mount. It has foam tape here on the bottom of the pedestal, so it'll mount to your windshield, dashboard, or center console. The backup camera, which is on this license plate bracket right here in the middle, this'll let you clearly see objects behind you as you drive in reverse. It's great for hooking up to your trailer.

This camera will switch between the hitch mode and the everyday mode with the push of a button. The everyday mode, it provides you a nice easy to follow color coded field to indicate the distance to the objects. The first detection field will be green in color and that's about three and a half feet to five and a half feet away. When you see the yellow, the caution field, that's yellow in color, that's one and a half feet to three and a half feet. And then the danger would be the red field, that's zero to one and a half feet. And then when it switches to hitch mode, that includes a center line assistance for easy trailer hookup.

On the very end right here, these are smart zone sensors that beep to alert you of distance to and the direction of the objects behind your vehicle. And the beep increases in intensity as you get closer to the objects. They do work in coordination with the visual cues from the camera on the monitor for a nice, safe trailer hookup. And the volume of the alarms can be adjusted are muted with the button on the side of your monitor. The license plate frame with the camera and the sensors will mount to your vehicle with the included hardware. The camera is adjustable, what angle you need it at.

And the sensors, same way, they are adjustable. So, that'll ensure maximum visibility of any objects behind your vehicle. It's a very plug in, simple installation. All these just plug right in. And then right here, you just plug this in line with your existing seven way trailer connector on your vehicle. There's no splicing. This will, once you plug it in let you retain the use of your factory seven way plug at your bumper. Now, one notice if your vehicle is not equipped with a factory seven way connector, then you will need to hard wire the camera to your vehicle's reverse lights. We do also offer extension harnesses, they are available. We sell them separately on our website, and that's for vehicles that are require more length to connect the monitor to the camera mounting bracket. A few specs on this. We're gonna measure the monitor, the overall size of it, the width, edge to edge right at four and a quarter inches wide and from bottom to top is about two and three quarter inches tall. Total height when it's on the pedestal is gonna be about three inches tall. And we mentioned the wire harness here is 20 feet in length, 20 feet long. But that should do it for the review on the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera and Hitch Aligner System.

This Unit is exactly what I needed, this unit has sensors for distance detection and warns you with beeps as your getting closer to an object, the camera unit installation is Farley easy and holds the License plate (Plate needs to be alone frames wont let you install the camera / Sensor unit what's nice of this unit is if you have and EOM 7 way Then you can use the tee adaptor that comes with it which lets you tap into the backup circuit without having to go into the rear taillight and tie into the backup light. the sticky part is running the wiring from the back to the front of the truck but with patience I got it done, had to drill a small hole under the drivers seat ( actually there is a existing hole through the metal part the seems to be sealed by some black sealer) I sealed around the wire I installed with black silicone sealant, then ran the wire under the carpet over to the driver side door up the molding and to the let side of the dash as shown in the photo. it works great now I can backup in the drive way without fear of hitting the garage door as it beeps as I get close to the door, and it can be switched to a tapered sense so you can use it to line up with a trailer hitch without getting in and out of the truck to do so. I like the unit. 575488

This was my first time installing a backup camera and it went pretty well. I installed it on a Dodge Ram 2500 to make it easier to hitch up my trailers and see if anyone is behind me when I'm backing up like my 7 year old grandson. I did need several tie wraps to secure the cable to the underside of the truck and made one small hole in the floor pan under the driver's seat to feed the cable to the monitor. Pretty straightforward. Pretty happy with the whole thing. Works good at night and has a decent color image with guiding lines when used to hook up the trailers. Recommended! 571113

Worked good until first rain then outer lines work intermittently. The alarm goes off almost every time you put it in reverse. Still has a good picture so camera its self is good. 573197

The camera and monitor are great. However, I’m having issues keeping the monitor stuck to my windshield. The heavy duty tape supplied with the kit is not strong enough. Disappointed. 572835

This is a wonderful product. I am so glad I chose the HOPKINS HM50002 over the other brands that I looked at. I am not good at anything electrical but the instructions were so clear that I installed it in a hour. The only thing I needed was 20 wire ties. When I made the last connection to the backup light and put it reverse I was amazed how good the image was. I tried it right away and it was perfect. The camera put me right under the trailer hitch the first time with no adjusting. With the Ford F150 two door the extension cable is not needed. I really appreciate the wonderful help I received. THANKS. I fully recomend the HM5000. Now I want have to get out of my truck over and over to connect a trailer. SO GOOD! 563504

Camera and display work great and picture quality is very good. The plug-in connectors did not work on my 2004 Tundra so I had to splice in the power supply but that was rather easy to to. Support personnel was very helpful too. 566457

This camera works great, makes it easy to back up to things, trailers, tight parking spots or walls. The only complaint I have is the monitor needs a better ball mount, it does not stay in the position you put it in, you constantly have to adjust it. 565855

Well the install was easy I only have the 4 pin attachment plug so I had to cut the 7 way connectors off and just used the two leads red and black spliced the red into the reverse light +feed. Grounded the Black negative wire to the chasee ran the cable to the camera .Installed the license and camera unit adjusted the sensors and it worked as far as rating goes I gave it 3 stars. Now shipping I paid for two day shipping on the 23 a Wednesday and it arrived on the 28 that Monday I informed them that I could have just did the free shipping and could have kept me [$] and it would have arrived the same time on the 28 . I received an e mail telling me they will add the [$] back to my account . It was that simple .Now we just have to see how the system preforms . I'm happy 426485

Fitting was easy after watching the Dodge Ram video, bought the cable extension but didn't need it. Image from camera great, I wish I had one a long time ago, it will be very handy for connecting the RV boat and trailer. 562267

George, Today I just had the camera installed in my truck. I used to have a plug-in version. It did not last very long. It always shorted out. This was amazing when I turned the truck on and was ready to back out of the dealership. The clarity was excellent. Once I figure out what settings I want it will be wonderful. The only thing I don't know is that will it drain the battery on the truck if the truck is not on. Is there a way I need to turn it off overnight or when I don't want to use it? Other than that I love this product. thanks again. 521754

If the Hopkins Smart Hitch back-up camera system is installed according to the instructions, it will only be operable when the vehicle is shifted in reverse as it gets its power directly from the reverse light circuit. If the vehicle is in park, no power will be reaching the camera system, so no worries about your battery getting drained.

Install was straight forward...less than 30 minutes. The most difficult part of the process was that on my 2006 Silverado I had drop the spare to access the 7 blade trailer connection to hook up. Overall very pleased with the price and product. 422866

The Hopkins Backup Camera I purchased worked as advertised...for the first few months. Then the sensors activating the audio alarm began malfunctioning and now it continuously beeps regardless of distance from an object. Its in full on 3 feet away warning mode with any object.

Very useful backup camera system. I bought this mostly for connecting my large camping trailer to my F-150, but it's great for everyday too, like backing my truck into my garage in very tight quarters. Love it! And eTrailer kept me informed, made sure everything showed up on time and was well packaged. Good job, good product, I'm pleased. 163747

Well I finally got around to do the review, and let first say install took a little while couple of hrs only because I wanted to hide everything ,I am mechanically inclined and have the panels tools to remove everything and do it correctly. I purchased the extension wire for 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited and actually not needing it the length of cable it was definitely long enough (with about 1 ft) extra tucked under the driver door panel, but guess depending on where you locate the monitor I mounted mine in corner of the windshield. Wish they would of have extended the Red wire for the reverse light (8 -10 inches ) longer I don't like extra splicing. Then finished the install and start it up throw that sucker in reverse and nothing on the screen!! My Bad reverse light wire had a bad connection!! (Lol) corrected it and Presto works great , whatever ground, power you hook up leave that area open to double check your connections... As far as backing up this thing is awesome gets me right under the coupler ( wife thinks I'm a bad***) ..I drive a Tractor trailer for a living little different hooking to a pin on a trailer, but anyhow this camera system is great beats getting out of the truck 3-4 times!! And night time is just as great!! Oh Thank you etrailer for the instructional videos, very detailed...I wouldrecommend this back up system to a friend!! 527096

I have been moving a lot of trailers recently on the farm as a full time hobby farmer. This product was a direct plug and play for my 1999 GMC Sierra. Installation time was 30 minutes or less and most of that was an older guy (me) rolling around under my truck installing zip ties to secure the wiring. This meets my needs perfectly. Great system, great price. Thanks 416868

Installed easily. Operated as advertised and is a great help in hitching up to my popup. Now the rest of the story. I lost my hitch lines on the display and called e trailer to see if they could help me with the date I bought the unit. This was just before Labor Day . I then called Hopkins with a description of the trouble and He decided that trouble was in the license plate holder and shipped me a new one not even knowing how long I had the unit ( 2 weeks over a year). Tuesday I got an E-Mail from e trailer with the date I had ordered the unit and word that he was sending me an authorization to return unit for testing. I have spent money with these people to outfit my Ranger and Honda civic with trailer hitches, brake controller and wire harness for both. I had a problem and they got on it fast. Will continue to do business with them in the future and recommend them to anyone for all your towing needs without reservation. One Happy Customer. 292211

I installed this backup camera on my 2006 F250 Crew Cab 6.5' bed, but I only used it for a couple of months before I sold the truck. It worked great and was a very straight forward install. I liked the coupler for the 7-pin connector as I didn't have to directly wire it to the backup lights. Just connect the coupler and run the camera cable to the cab. I mounted the display to the left of the steering wheel near the headlight switch. It was out of the way, yet it was easy to see and control. I was lucky to have a hole in the floor with a rubber grommet already installed on the driver side, so it was just a matter of cutting a hole in the grommet for the cable and sealing it with some silicone. I had enough cable to reach the dash, but if I wanted to mount it above the windshield, I would have needed an extension. My truck is about 20' long total. I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 because of the quality of some of the plastic components. I feel they could have been made better. Hey...for the price, though, this camera was pretty darn good. 168860

Not as good as cameras that come on new vehicles but well worth the price for my 97 f-150. Really works well when backing up to hook up one of my trailers. 553448

Dealing with eTrailer staff was great! They answered my questions before and after the sale and provided regular status updates. To top it off, I got it on sale with free shipping (arrived in four days). So far, everything works as promised. Picture is clear and distance alarms appear accurate. Have not tested hitch alignment yet. I bought the HM50002 for a 2012 Ford F150 crew cab. Hopkins instructions are basic at best. Take it from me, watch the eTrailer install videos and pay attention to the detail. Lots of tips. I would never had known that that protruding rubber tip on the grommet holding the wiring harness on the firewall was actually a Ford pass through. Nice! Now for the problem issues. These are all linked to Ford or Hopkins, not e-Trailer. A) If you have a four door, buy the extension cable. B) My 2012 factory bumper (unlike the 2011 Ford video) did not have ANY clearance between the Hopkins camera mount (slightly oversize) and the spare tire lock. Use caution so you don't break the hinge but you MAY have to open the Hopkins mounting holes enough to allow screws to install. It's tight. C) Running the cable by the fuel lines/tank is tight on hands but you may choose different path. D) Connecting the Hopkins 7-pin connector to the Ford connector was more difficult than it should have been. Not sure what caused the tight clearance. The total install took four hours instead of two. I was going to rate 4 stars because of difficulty with install but super helpful eTrailer staff, install videos, and Hopkins support changed my mind. Your install may be much easier. 487166

I installed a wired backup camera in my 2013 Silverado. There was an excellent online video which took me through every step. The camera works beautifully. The installation was easier than I expected. My only problem was in figuring out how to release the latch holding together the two parts of the seven pin connector on the truck. 224363

I hooked up the Hopkins Smart Hitch this past weekend on my 2002 F150 4x4 - Lariat. I must say, as indicated you your web site the installation was relative easy (considering my age) but very easy. And the camera is great! I have it mounted on my dash board only because I haven't really decided where it would best fit for me. And for the price and ease of installation you can’t beat it. Here’s the kicker, my wife was very skeptical when I told her I had ordered it. But after I installed it, or should I say, when she asked if I needed help installing it, I said no, that I was all finished. Her comment, “That was fast”. So I had to give her a tour of what I had done. When I showed her the working the camera, she was really surprised! The only extra I had to do was buy the relay fuse (R3146), which the older Fords initially do not install. It’s a great Trailer Hitch and Back Up Camera! What can I say "I love it! " 307990

About a year ago I purchased a Hopkins SmartHitch backup cameras and alarm system. Within six months it failed to sound the alarm when approaching an object and the hitch lines on the display would only display for a few seconds. Unable to locate the date of purchase and going through the hassle of contacting e-trailer or Hopkins I continued using it to connect to the trailer using the monitor only. Today I received an e-mail from (Laura) at e-trailer letting me know that I had purchased the Hopkins SmartHitch about a year ago and wanted to follow up to make sure I like the product after owning it for a year. I took the opportunity to mention this to the rep of e-trailer who gave me the number of (Kriss Carter) the Hopkins tech. Asking if I could send him a copy of the e-mail I had received from e-trailer he told me that he would send me a new unit. Could not believe the ease of getting the unit replaced. Should have called six months ago. 321081

Easy to install step by step instructions on my f150 extended cab I had plenty of wire to do the job I put the monitor above my mirror.works well the only drawback I see is the size of the monitor but I can deal with this ,better than not knowing what is behind you,or where you are in relationship to the trailer ball Great product 235679

The installation instructions were easy enough , the product works good .The screen was smaller than I thought it would be ,but it has a good picture and it turned out to be perfect for the size of the dash area without blocking visability . I called Hopkins MFG. support because I thought I had a malfuntioning unit, they were eager to send a replacement , but I found the problem was low electric power while I was setting up the unit ,battery went to low for camera to operate . With vehicle running NO more problems . I bought and installed 2 units I like them both . 167430

Installed my smart hitch camera today and it was easy to do, even for an old guy. The hardest part was getting under the truck to run the monitor cable. Whole process took about an hour. I have an 05 Ram 1500 with factory tow package, however my 7way has a square plug behind the bumper so I had to splice my wire instead of using the T-plug but was still easy to do. The camera works great and I am very pleased with it. Now when I hookup my boat or my RV I won't have to have my wife help. I also won't have to get out and check where the ball is 2 or 3 times again. The videos etrailer have up shows exactly what you have to do in great detail so if you are thinking about getting one and installing it yourself, go for it! 173389

Brad,No, I needed no extra cable. I mounted my monitor in the upper left top of windshield. I ran the cable up thru the molding left of the dash and up inside the molding left of windshield.

This review pertains to the installation in a 2011 Ram 2500 diesel. Watched the video for the 2009 2500 series which helped considerably. I was thankful that the trailer plug hookup was plug and play with no cutting or splicing. After the initial hook up to the trailer plug I attached the video screen and placed the truck in reverse just to see if there were any problems; none were observed. Next I placed the license tag holder/rear sensors and camera then the screen next to and above the rear view mirror on the left side as shown in the video. I then ran the 5' extra screen cord under the headliner and behind the left grab panel so I would not have to stuff all the extra video cord under the headliner. The grab handle post was loosened by removing the mounting screws (note: they are a 10mm size and the bolt covers pry up as follows: the top one from the bottom and the bottom one from the top). The video cable was run along side of the left side frame beside electrical wiring. The left side door sill was removed along with the kick panel. A hole was drilled in the floor, per the video, with a 1/2" drill bit. Connection was made with the cord from the screen and the extra cord was left in the floor just before the kick panel. Was plenty of room to do that. The entire operation took about an hour without rushing. I probably spent more time trying to place the screen exactly the way I wanted it than any of the other steps. 164371

I'm pleasantly surprised by the ease of installation of this product and it does exactly what I want it to do. I have a 2013 Chevy Silverado 2500, and after climbing under the bumper I was able to twist out the 7-way/pole connector and slip in the provided connector, then string the wire up the chassis. I did have a problem finding and entrance point into the cab, then I simply drilled a 1/2" hole in a grommet under the drivers seat and then popped up the trim panel at the door and snaked it up the edge and managed to tuck everything in and pop it out at the dash over the steering wheel. One note... I barely had enough wire from the connector in back to stretch it to the monitor to reach the dash at the very left where the wire came up so if you want to tuck it into the headliner and out at your rear view mirror, buy the extender wire. I have an 8' bed and a crew cab, but I still think with other body styles it would still be a good idea to get the extender wire for that application. Gives a great shot of the trailer hitch sliding right under my trailer... No more hopping out 5 times to get it exactly right... 138205

Ordered the Hopkins Smart Hitch back up Camera and Hitch Aligner System, arrived as promised. Have not had a chance to install as yet, but looks to be exactly what I need. Etrailer was a pleasure to work with, stayed in contact with me through the entire process, from placing order through delivery. They then went the extra mile, contacted me after notification of delivery to see if I was satisfied with my order. This is almost unheard of in today's buisness world. Great company to work with, will certainly be doing more buisness with them. 162090

After install, could not be happier with purchase, only regret is that I did not purchase sooner. Install was very easy, layed cable out, identified ingress into cab, went to work. Install completed in about 20 minutes. Camera works perfect, excellent image, works as stated. Could not be happier with purchase.

I installed this on a 2002 Chev Tahoe. Instructions were very easy to follow. The sensor portion mounted behind the license plate and then run the wire cable to the front. I entered the cab along side the parking brake cable from below and by removing the left side kick panel and the A-pillar post cover I was able to run it up to the left hand side of the dash. I mounted the monitor on top of the dash, but all the way to the left lower corner. The picture is great and is just the right size. 208089

I have had this a year now and it is still working great. This is so nice not to have to get out and check to see how close you are to the trailer. I really like the size of the screen, it is big enough to give detail, but small enough to not take up too much room. Very happy with this product.

I bought this back-up camera for a Chevy Express van conversion RV. It may work well, time will tell, but do not try to mount it in the rear license plate area of the Chevy Express Van. The license plate light interferes with placement. Choose instead the rear bumper to mount this camera. I wish the Hopkins company would be truthful about this "license plate camera mount" not fitting in the license plate area of a Chevy Express Van. 134090

Very easy to install and works very well. Screen is on the small side. I wish it was a little bit bigger. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the picture at night when using only the factory tail lights from my f150. Back up sensor works well. I have a f150 supercrew with a short bed. From other reviews I knew I would need an extension cable. I called up the tech support # right after I placed my order and with no problem or cost they mailed me the needed cable. The camera and guide markings work great for hitching a trailer up by one person. The connections would have been really easy if I had an OEM 7 pin plug, which I didn't, but it wasn't really a big deal. I agree with several other reviewers that the included cables are kind of short, but long enough for my application. I think you can order extensions, if necessary. 129024

This is the best invention since the shirt pocket, Kinda got tired of trying backing up 10 times to hit the trailer ball or taking had signals from the wife is even worse, until This little gadget came along.. It works great!!, main video wire is a little too short so you guys with 4 door trucks are gonna probably come up short if you're mounting the monitor by your rear view mirror, I have a 02 Dodge standard cab w/9' flat bed and it took every bit of the video cable to make the stretch, might go ahead and buy an extension cable if they make one. Other than that gripe ,,, I love it!!! 147529

the Hopkins backup camera system has got to be the best buy for the price over any other system I have found. I have had several of these types of cameras installed in my trucks and none come close to this one. very simple to install and the alarm sensors work great. everything is adjustable and I installed this in a 2005 Chevy Silverado crew cab and had enough cable to run the screen up into the top center of the windshield. fantastic product, and worth every penny! 130953

I just drilled a hole in the cab floor on drivers side near the rear corner and used a rubber grommet. the other option you may want to try is the trans shifter cable under the driver floor carpet in front of the driver seat. you will have to pull the edge trim and access it from the kick panel.

Arrived in good time in good order. Installed on my 2002 Ford F250 Extended Cab Short Bed. Disconnecting the factory connector was a minor pain. Fishing the cable to the cab was the next worse part and would be easier if one has access to a lift. Cab access was through a floor grommet near the accelerator. I ran up behind the dash beside the steering column. The display was mounted on a bare spot on the dash face. This keeps it out of the sun and excessive heating which seems to cause issues for some. The supplied cable was just long enough and I didn't need the 5' extension I had ordered. Anywhere else and it would be needed. The 7-pin connector needed a tweak to seat completely and the unit came to life. Works well and I like it. The camera location may need some protection with a shield if there is a lot of bed debris from hauling sand or gravel etc. The left sensor partially blocks the spare tire mechanism access hole but not a big deal. Happy so far. 294705

The Hopkins camera has been woking fine through heat and cold which was a concern for some in reading the reviews of others.Great for trailer hook up but the screen is a bit small for older eyes and not really reliable as a back-up viewer although this was never the intent.

I purchased the hard wired back up camera because I wanted a good clear picture and did not want to worry about wifi or Bluetooth interference. The camera took about an hour total to install. I adjusted the sensors, screwed the camera and sensor assembly along with the license plate onto the back of the truck. Pushed the tab on the 7 way plug connecter to take the OEM coupler apart, put the jumper in place and then just routed the wires towards the cab. I cut a "Plus sign" slit in the grommet in the floor, this grommet was about 8" from the sill plate and about even with the front edge of the front door opening. I had to pull the LH front sill plate off as well as the LH kick panel, and pulled the floor matt back. I do not have carpet in my truck but the process would be the same. I ran the wiring through the grommet and then up the LH A-pillar and above the headliner. I had to use the 5' jumper wire in order to run it up the A-pillar. I mounted the display screen in the top left corner of my windshield, very convenient yet out of the way. The display is very clear and the sensors read very well, when the beeps go to a "constant on" I am about 4" from an object. This seems close but the bumper is about 4 to 5" deep where the plate and camera assembly are mounted. The only thing I that gave me trouble was squeezing the OEM 7 way coupler onto the jumper wire that was provided, I originally installed the entire unit and it quit working, vibration when driving had caused the coupler to pull apart just enough to kill the camera. This was an easy fix and it works perfect now. I would definitely recommend this camera to a friend. 173009

installed on a 2008 dodge ram standard cab with 6 foot bed, still needed about 2 feet more of cable for top of windshield mount so glad I ordered extra cable. This is mostly for trailer hook up so I wired with a switch in cab to turn on when I wanted. This will also allow me to turn on when driving so I can check may trailer load and make sure everything on trailer is secure a feature I think is really good. Ran wiring inside frame no problem. etrailer videos are really good for learning how to do things as instructions from Hopkins is only 2 pages. very happy so far and plan on trailer hook being a snap from now on. 150935

How did you do the wiring? Did you somehow use the T-adapter at the 7-pin connection, or do it all custom? Id like to do a similar set-up but dont want to reinvent the wheel if someone else has figured out how to do it! Thanks

I wrote the review for the extension cable; the same applies. I forgot to add that I routed my cable to the front by following and tie-wrapping to the existing main wiring harness. It works well. The extension cable is needed for a Cheverolet crewcab long bed truck. I lacked mounting real estate on my 2500HD, so I found the left side next to the vent as the only available space. It also allows me to look at my side mirror easily. I preferred to splice it into my taillight; I felt the supplied 7 pin connector was not as heavy duty as factory. The wire colors were not as shown in instructions. I ended up using a volt/ohm/amp meter to determine which wires were 12 volt and ground. The splice connectors that I bought were too large for the backup camera wire; they were yellow size. You will need blue or even red. I used anticorrosion paste on the wire splices to prevent future problems. 167658

Camera arrived in great shape. I have a '95 Ford F350 with tow package and it is not plug n play. The box has specific models that are plug n play. This needs to be added to description. But no worry, I spliced camera into my backup lights which are the stock ones and 2 small "fog lamps" under the bumper. They light up the boat ramp at night which is helpful. Unfortunately, the camera is voltage sensitive. The camera works with 3 lights on but not a fourth. Didn't matter which one I took out of the circuit. As so as I unplugged a light, camera turned on. I'm sure I can get it to work with a small 12v relay and extra wiring. It definitely needs the extra wire length with a crew cab & 8' bed. 162753

Code Product HM50002 Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera and Hitch Aligner System Absolutely best purchase I've ever made! I own a 2004 F-150 Ford Lariat and pulled a 30ft. Travel trailer for 10 years without this product. I didn't find out about it until I traded for a Motorhome with a backup camara. I kept my truck but still had difficulty backing in & out of parking spaces. This camara is a life saver. My truck has the new wider wheel base and equipped with the trailer tow pkg. and the bed has a tonnal cover on it, so it's difficult to judge how close I am to something when backing up. It comes with easy installation instructions and works fantastic. I'm 77 yrs. old and installed it myself. It would be a lot easier if I had a lift but no such luck. The installation instructions are very simple if you have any kind of "do it yourself " mechanical experience. The hardest part is running the 20 Ft. Wire under the truck and zip tying it up. That's where a Car Lift would make it a snap. Scooting around on your back at my age is not recommended. There are videos on YouTube that show you how to remove & replace almost any part or trim piece on almost any vehicle. I mounted my camara on the left drivers side dash right by the windshield post. Perfect position for my truck. I have a dash cover and the screen mounting has a glue attachment, not a suction cup. I removed the adhesive cover on the camara and the same on a piece of Velcro and I stuck it to the fabric of the dash cover for a secure mounting that I can lift off if needed. I've showed it to a couple of friends who are going to buy one even though they don't tow anything. It's an amazing amazing Back Up Camara well worth the price. 235234

Its still working like brand new! Fantastic back up camera! The camera and sensors work great especially when backing in or out of parking spaces. I wish I had it the 10 years I was towing a travel trailer. Lining up the trailer hitch would have been a piece of cake! It has been a life saver any time I have to backup anywhere. Especially in large parking lots with other cars nearby or distracted people walking behind me. Wouldnt go anywhere without it.

I had researched backup camera systems for my 2006 Dodge Ram 1500. I had gone in to one of the electronic stores to actually see what my options were. When I came to etrailer.com and saw the Hopkins Smart Hitch, I was impressed with the price and the features of the camera. I had looked at Garmin, Rand McNally, and a few others that were over twice the cost and had fewer options. I called etrailer to make sure the unit would fit in my truck, Michelle was very helpful and took my order. The unit was shipped that day and was delivered within 3 to 4 days. I had it professionally installed, though I know I could have done it myself. I am really pleased with all aspects of this camera. The audible signal (not available on some of the higher priced cameras) is really helpful - and the green, yellow, red bars give a true perspective of the proximity of obstacles. Being able to toggle between trailer hitch mode, and everyday backup mode is as easy as pushing a button. I really don't think you'll find a better camera for the price. And, etrailer's customer service is excellent. 316277

Thank you for the follow up. I do like the camera, and it has worked really well. The only thing that has changed is that I dont get the visual marker lines showing up any more. They come on for the first few seconds and then turn off. The camera works perfectly other than that.

  • What you can do is attach the power wire for the backup camera # HM50002 to the running light circuit so that you won't have to run any wires or install a switch. Then to operate the camera you would just turn on the running lights. Now, this method will turn the camera on any time your head lights are on so at night it would be on all the time. Just turn the monitor off in that situation! The wiring is not very large gauge with this camera so at most I would say use 16 gauge wire,...

  • Troubleshooting Hopkins Backup Camera that Does not Turn On When Put in Reverse
  • First thing you need to check is the reverse light circuit on the 7-way of your truck. On most vehicles this circuit is active, but not always. Using a circuit tester like part # 3808 to test the center pin of the 7-way for voltage when the vehicle is in reverse. Most likely this is the problem. You would need to run a wire from the center pin to the reverse light circuit of your taillight wiring to activate this circuit.

  • Locating Reverse Lamp Circuit to Install Back Up Camera on 2009 Dodge Ram Truck
  • Hopkins doesn't sell the connector included with their Smart Hitch back up camera as a separate item. Your best bet would be to simply locate the circuit that powers the reverse lights on your 2009 Dodge Ram and tap the wire into that circuit as shown in the diagram I provided. To locate the correct circuit, peel back the wire loom on the wiring harness that feeds your trailer connector. Use a circuit tester like part # 40376 and probe the wires as a helper shifts the transmission in...

  • How to Determine Towing Capacity for 2010 Toyota Highlander, Hitch and Camera Recommendation
  • To address your first question about the capacity's of the Curt Hitch # 13534 and your 2010 Toyota Highlander you must always go with the lowest rated component in a towing setup as the overall towing capacity. So since your vehicle is rated at 500 lbs of tongue weight you would gain nothing by going to a higher rated hitch. In other words the Curt hitch you referenced would work very well for you. In order to be able to install the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera # HM50002 you...

  • Recommended Camera System for Use with Truck Camper and Horse Trailer
  • Since you have both a slide-in truck camper and also a horse trailer what I suggest to give you the best possible visibility is a wireless 2-camera system. The Swift Hitch Wireless Digital Camera System # SH03D features two cameras that you can position where you need them (say, one on the camper and one inside the horse trailer) and includes night-vision capability. The hand-held monitor will let you keep an eye on the horses even while you're tucked inside the camper at night and the...

  • Obtaining 12-Volt Power Connection When Installing Back Up Camera System
  • The installation procedure will depend on the camera system used as well as the year, make and model of the vehicle. Some camera systems gain their electrical power by tapping into the reverse lamp signal of the vehicle. A camera system like the Rampage Products # RA7710 is battery powered and transmits to your Android or iOS phone via Wi-Fi. The Hopkins Smart Hitch Camera System # HM50002 would tap into the trailer tow package wiring via the US Car connector used by most domestic full-sized...

  • Can the Camera Angle Be Further Adjusted on Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera
  • I went out to the warehouse and pulled a Hopkins backup camera system # HM50002. There are a couple of things you can try. First, you may be able to adjust the camera up higher where it attaches to the main body of the bracket. The brackets are fragile so you will need to be careful. And you might be able to turn the whole assembly upside down. However, the ball will be even more in the way and the sensors could potentially detect the bumper. Please note that any modifications made...

  • Backup Camera Recommendation for a 2010 Buick Lacrosse
  • Yes, you can install a backup camera on your 2010 Buick Lacrosse. The backup camera system that I recommend is the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera, # HM50002. This is an excellent camera system that will not have any interference issues like the wireless systems. It has a color display with distance indicators. I have attached an installation video to give you an idea of how this camera system installs.

  • Can A Larger Monitor Be Used With Hopkins Smart Hitch System?
  • The Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera and Hitch Aligner System # HM50002 does not have a larger monitor available than the 3.5 inch. They only offer a smaller one with 2.5 inch screen in # HM60195VA. Unfortunately the monitors from other manufacturers are not compatible with this system. If you want a larger monitor you will need to use a different system. I recommend the Rear View Safety Backup Camera System - Built-in Backup Sensors # RVS-5350 which has a 4.3 inch monitor. You...
