Designed for towing but great for everyday use, the Smart Hitch backup camera improves safety by providing you with visual cues and audible alerts when you are backing up. It also simplifies the towing process by making it a one-person job to align your trailer hitch ball with your coupler.

Push-Button Controls and SmartZone Sensors

Switch between Hitch Mode and Everyday Mode by simply pushing a button on the side of the monitor. In Everyday Mode, the monitor will display a grid in red, yellow, and green that alerts you to the distance of objects on the display with red indicating that the object is very close to your vehicle and green indicating the object is at a safe distance. This grid works in conjunction with SmartZone sensors that beep to alert you of objects and distances. The beeps intensify as you get closer to an object.

In Hitch Mode, the monitor provides center-line assistance for easy hookup to your trailer coupler. The grid creates a target as you back up, ensuring that you keep your vehicle in line with the coupler as you get closer. This allows one person to hitch up to a trailer without the need for a spotter.

Easy Installation in 3 Steps

The Smart Hitch camera plugs inline with your factory 7-way, RV-style trailer connector, maintaining the function of the trailer connector at the rear of your vehicle. If your vehicle is not equipped with a factory tow package, you will need to hardwire the camera to your vehicle's reverse lights.

The camera and sensors are connected to a bracket that installs behind your license plate. Simply remove your license plate, mount the bracket, and re-install the license plate using the included hardware. You can adjust the angle of the camera and the sensors to ensure maximum visibility.

To complete installation, run the wire from the camera mounting bracket to the monitor in the cab of your vehicle. This wire provides power to the monitor. The monitor can be mounted to your windshield, dashboard, or center console with foam tape. Remember to mount the monitor somewhere where it will not obstruct visibility as you drive. Some vehicles may require an extension harness (sold separately) to complete the connection between the monitor in their cab and the camera mounting bracket at the year of their vehicle.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Backup Cameras and Alarms HM50002 Review

Today we're gonna take a look at the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera and Hitch Aligner System. This backup camera takes the guesswork out of hooking up your trailer and driving in reverse. It includes everything shown here on the table. It'll include this color monitor with the pedestal bracket. Includes the license plate bracket with the camera in the middle and the sensors on the end. Also, it has this 20 foot wire harness with the seven way T connector on it.

The mounting hardware and a nice installation guide on how to install everything. We'll start with the monitor here. It's the three and a half inch size color monitor, provides a large static free image with crystal clear definition. The screen resolution on this is about 480 x 234 pixels, and it will mount. It has foam tape here on the bottom of the pedestal, so it'll mount to your windshield, dashboard, or center console. The backup camera, which is on this license plate bracket right here in the middle, this'll let you clearly see objects behind you as you drive in reverse. It's great for hooking up to your trailer.

This camera will switch between the hitch mode and the everyday mode with the push of a button. The everyday mode, it provides you a nice easy to follow color coded field to indicate the distance to the objects. The first detection field will be green in color and that's about three and a half feet to five and a half feet away. When you see the yellow, the caution field, that's yellow in color, that's one and a half feet to three and a half feet. And then the danger would be the red field, that's zero to one and a half feet. And then when it switches to hitch mode, that includes a center line assistance for easy trailer hookup.

On the very end right here, these are smart zone sensors that beep to alert you of distance to and the direction of the objects behind your vehicle. And the beep increases in intensity as you get closer to the objects. They do work in coordination with the visual cues from the camera on the monitor for a nice, safe trailer hookup. And the volume of the alarms can be adjusted are muted with the button on the side of your monitor. The license plate frame with the camera and the sensors will mount to your vehicle with the included hardware. The camera is adjustable, what angle you need it at.

And the sensors, same way, they are adjustable. So, that'll ensure maximum visibility of any objects behind your vehicle. It's a very plug in, simple installation. All these just plug right in. And then right here, you just plug this in line with your existing seven way trailer connector on your vehicle. There's no splicing. This will, once you plug it in let you retain the use of your factory seven way plug at your bumper. Now, one notice if your vehicle is not equipped with a factory seven way connector, then you will need to hard wire the camera to your vehicle's reverse lights. We do also offer extension harnesses, they are available. We sell them separately on our website, and that's for vehicles that are require more length to connect the monitor to the camera mounting bracket. A few specs on this. We're gonna measure the monitor, the overall size of it, the width, edge to edge right at four and a quarter inches wide and from bottom to top is about two and three quarter inches tall. Total height when it's on the pedestal is gonna be about three inches tall. And we mentioned the wire harness here is 20 feet in length, 20 feet long. But that should do it for the review on the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera and Hitch Aligner System.

I just installed the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera system and like it very much. I have a fishing boat & trailer, a utility trailer, and a RV camping trailer and this will make hooking up to them a breeze. My neighbor also has a fishing boat & trailer and I showed it to him. He had to get his wife and show it to her also. He said it was going on his Christmas wish list! It took me about 2 hours to install, with 90% of the time used to run the wire from the back to the windshield. I then had to adjust the camera position as it showed clearly the hitch and about 20 feet behind the truck, but I wanted it to show more distance behind the truck. I was in a parking lot last night and it did not give me as good a look behind me as i desired, so I loosened it and tilted it up a little more. It works great now. It did pick up the hitch ball with the backup sensors and sounded a constant alarm, so I loosened them and tilted them up a little also, but they do not move nearly as easily as the camera does. I had to move them rather forceably and tighten the screws before letting them go to prevent them from dropping back to their original position. The instruction sheet shows some adjustment positions for the sensors, but does not give enough information to tell you how it is suppose to be done, so I just had to guess. I probably did not do it the way they intended, but they did not say, so it works anyway. My truck is a Dodge Ram 1500 and I watched the video on your web site showing how to install it on different vehicles, and it was really helpful. I probably would not have figured out how to get the wire inside the cab without the video, but it was "spot on". My photos show the camera installation, the installation on the front windshield, the wiring connection to the factory installed wiring harness, the attachment of part of the wire, and the entry of the wire into the vehicle below the driver"s seat. As your video showed, I then ran the wire beneath the carpet to the rubber door molding, and behind the plastic to the left of the windshield and out at the top. I had planned to install it beside the rear view mirror, but I could not hide the connection so I stopped by the side and installed it at the top instead. I was initially concerned about the small size of the monitor, but it is color and shows up very adequately. 161844

I Installed camera #HM50002 in my 2002 F150 supercrew. Ford does not have the relay in the fuse box for the trailer backup light to work with the factory 7 pin connector on the 2002 models. You will need a relay for the older Fords. I got mine at Pep Boys. ( BWD accessory relay Part no. R3146 for $15.00.) I hooked it up to the OEM 7 pin connector with the T adapter connector furnished with the camera. I zip tied the cable to the frame rail and removed the floor thresh hold for the front and rear doors. They come off easily with a large flathead screwdriver. There is a grommet in the thresh hold box section you can see from under the truck that you can run the cable thru once you remove the grommet. The grommet hole is about 4 inches from the rear end of the rear door threshold. I Ran the cable through the hole and pushed it from the rear to the front inside the box section. I sliced the grommet about half way down for the cable and pushed the grommet back in. I then removed the front left kick panel and pulled the weather stripping away from the floor up to the dash and ran the cable to above the dash. From there I ran the cable under the front of the headliner and placed the camera just above the rear view mirror since I had plenty of cable to mount it there. The cable slides under the front of the headliner easily with a gentle push with your fingers. I pushed the weather stripping in place, and snapped in the plastic floor threshold covers and left kick panel. I then zip tied the extra wire length from the T connector up out of the way. All wiring and cables completely hidden! Since mine is a lifted 4X4, I had no need for a lift as I had plenty of room to run the cable from under the truck. Be careful with the license plate as it is a close fit. Make sure you push the wires out of the way on both sides so you don’t pinch or cut the wires in the license plate mount. In the middle of fuse box picture you will see 2 relays, a blank space and another relay. The blank space is where the R3146 relay goes. It's an great back up camera. I love it! 238396

Code Product HM50002 Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera and Hitch Aligner System Absolutely best purchase I've ever made! I own a 2004 F-150 Ford Lariat and pulled a 30ft. Travel trailer for 10 years without this product. I didn't find out about it until I traded for a Motorhome with a backup camara. I kept my truck but still had difficulty backing in & out of parking spaces. This camara is a life saver. My truck has the new wider wheel base and equipped with the trailer tow pkg. and the bed has a tonnal cover on it, so it's difficult to judge how close I am to something when backing up. It comes with easy installation instructions and works fantastic. I'm 77 yrs. old and installed it myself. It would be a lot easier if I had a lift but no such luck. The installation instructions are very simple if you have any kind of "do it yourself " mechanical experience. The hardest part is running the 20 Ft. Wire under the truck and zip tying it up. That's where a Car Lift would make it a snap. Scooting around on your back at my age is not recommended. There are videos on YouTube that show you how to remove & replace almost any part or trim piece on almost any vehicle. I mounted my camara on the left drivers side dash right by the windshield post. Perfect position for my truck. I have a dash cover and the screen mounting has a glue attachment, not a suction cup. I removed the adhesive cover on the camara and the same on a piece of Velcro and I stuck it to the fabric of the dash cover for a secure mounting that I can lift off if needed. I've showed it to a couple of friends who are going to buy one even though they don't tow anything. It's an amazing amazing Back Up Camara well worth the price. 235234

Its still working like brand new! Fantastic back up camera! The camera and sensors work great especially when backing in or out of parking spaces. I wish I had it the 10 years I was towing a travel trailer. Lining up the trailer hitch would have been a piece of cake! It has been a life saver any time I have to backup anywhere. Especially in large parking lots with other cars nearby or distracted people walking behind me. Wouldnt go anywhere without it.

Just got the back up cam and was eager to put it in. Instructions were very clear (i have restored a few vintage mustangs in the past 5 yrs so this didn't look too hard!!). Only problem i ran into is that my particular 7 pin plug DID NOT separate as in the videos (I have a 2004 Toyota Tundra). I actually unplugged the harness from the truck and took it to my friend who is the parts guy at the Toyo dealership. He wasn't sure either and had to take it back to a service guy-negative on mine separating and being able to T-in with the supplied hardware :( So that was a bummer, but since i had the the harness out, it made it easier to splice in the wires for the camera (instructions were clear how to do this as well). I opted not to use their crimp splice connectors and instead used my own connectors with shrink tubing which i felt would be a bit better. As others have said, longest part of the job is getting under the truck and routing the wire which isn't a big deal (wear some glasses so you don't get crud in your eyes!). I ordered the extension cable as i wasn't sure if i was going to need or not. Didn't need it (i have the crew cab) and after much contemplation i decided to mount it on the small area below the radio that looks like a sunglasses cubby. It was perfect, as the cubby just popped out, so i was able to take it to the workbench and drill it/install it there, then just bring it back in the truck and pop it in!. So, as far as the backup camera goes, I've had a backup camera on our previous rig, a 2010 silverado, that the stealership put in, and we have a factory b/u cam on our 2015 corolla. This camera actually puts both of those to shame. It is WAY clearer than the corolla cam, and about twice as clear as the one we had on the silverado (which by the way was over $500 5 yrs ago!) I am not really impressed by much as i enjoy working on cars for fun, but this camera really exceeded my expectations as far as clarity. the b/u cam in the corolla doesn't have the warning beep, which i totally like. i also like the trailer feature (i have a boat and the silverado didn't have that view, so i'm excited to try that out). So, if i didn't have to remove the harness and take it in for a double check, probably would have taken about 1 hour and i am anal about the way stuff looks/installs. So, GREAT product-more than satisfied! 236164

installed on a 2008 dodge ram standard cab with 6 foot bed, still needed about 2 feet more of cable for top of windshield mount so glad I ordered extra cable. This is mostly for trailer hook up so I wired with a switch in cab to turn on when I wanted. This will also allow me to turn on when driving so I can check may trailer load and make sure everything on trailer is secure a feature I think is really good. Ran wiring inside frame no problem. etrailer videos are really good for learning how to do things as instructions from Hopkins is only 2 pages. very happy so far and plan on trailer hook being a snap from now on. 150935

How did you do the wiring? Did you somehow use the T-adapter at the 7-pin connection, or do it all custom? Id like to do a similar set-up but dont want to reinvent the wheel if someone else has figured out how to do it! Thanks

I cut off the T adapter, for my hook up only needed to ground camera like in video, and power to it which I ran from a switch in the cab of truck, make sure you use a fuse where you come off of battery for power. I do not remember which one of the videos show not using the T adapter I believe it is for the dodge as mine cannot use it anyway more questions let me know

So you just ran a ground and power from a switch so you can turn it on and off when you want?

for kevin s. yes just power from battery to switch then to camera and ground any handy place on frame then their cable form camera to screen in cab, one thing I learned was do not try to stick screen on the rough stuff that is around some of the windshields nowdays will not stay. am thinking of moving camera to top of my topper to give better view as license plate is pretty low but show hitch okay for hookup

I found that the video of installing the HM50002 on a 2009 GMC Sierra at Etrailer.com was more useful than the written instructions that came with the product. Step 1, item 1) of the written instructions that applies to vehicles with OEM 7 Blade Tow Package Connector is in error, e.g., item1) Connect installation cables (D) to monitor (A) and route the installation cable (D) to the back of the vehicle stopping at the back side of the OEM connector on vehicle (Fig. 2). Note: One should not connect the installation cable (D) to monitor (A) at this point. The video shows the proper method starting at the back of the vehicle, as shown in Step 2. Install the license plate bracket and camera. Once these are installed then one should continue with Step 1, items 2), 3), and 4). Before one begins routing the Installation cable from rear to front of vehicle, a leader, such as, an 8" zip tie should be securely taped to the monitor end of the cable. At this point, one must then route the end of the cable that goes to the monitor from the rear of the vehicle to the front of the vehicle following the existing cable until one locates a grommet on the floor of the vehicle just in front of the driver's seat. One should use zip ties to secure the installation cable to the existing cable as one proceeds forward toward the front of the vehicle. Make a hole on the edge of an existing grommet, and route the cable inside the vehicle. Remove the tape and zip tie from the monitor end of the cable. Pull in the rest of the cable. Route the Installation cable to the monitor's cable, and plug them together. Based on the amount of cable inside the vehicle determine where to locate the monitor. Secure the monitor to the desired location. Remove backing from foam tape and press down firmly to ensure the monitor is secure. One can also use Velcro to secure the monitor. Proceed to Step 3, item 1). Note: When running the Installation cable from rear to front on my 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 Z71, I had to remove and reinstall the driver side rear tire, so that I could secure the Installation cable with a zip tie next to the existing cable. 275058

This review is for the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup camera part number #HM50002. It was installed on a 2003 Ford F-150 supercrew 4x4. I ordered this back in January but it has been too cold to install. The shipping was quick and everything was packed well with no issues. Now that the weather has warmed up a little I went ahead and installed the camera on the truck. The install was fairly easy and straightforward with no real issues on the equipment. Be careful while installing the license plate into the camera holder. The cabling is run along the slot of the plastic and if the edges of the license plate are sharp they could cut into it. I had to take a screw driver and work the cabling back in a little further to stay out of the way. The splice went in with no issues and I had to reroute some cabling to get enough slack for the 4 pin connector that Ford has next to the 7 pin. I ran the cabling along the driverside frame rail and up into the cab through the grommet under the driverside floor pan. From there I ran it up the side kick panel and the A pillar and mounted the LCD screen on the upper right hand corner of the windshield. For this vehicle I had an extra foot of cable that I wrapped up inside the driverside kick panel. 2 things to know, Ford does not install relays for their 12v accessory hookup and the backup tail lamps in the 7 pin round connector. I had to purchase these separately for the camera to work. I am pretty sure the camera only needed the backup tail lamp circuit but after reading up on these issues I just added both at the same time. It appears the tow package does not add these relays as my truck did come equipped with it but the relays were still not present. The camera also did not come with a grey locking clip for the splice. The original connector has the grey locking pin but the new splice also needs on where it connects to the original 7 pin housing. I sent a question about this to etrailer on how to acquire one of these and I am waiting on a response. This should be included to lock the connector into the original housing so it does not inadvertently become disconnected. 178345

I purchased the Hopkins Smart Hitch Camera because of the positive reviews I have read and the reasonable price. I installed the unit in my 2014 Ford F-150 SuperCrew 4X4 truck with the short bed. First off let me say that so far I am happy with the results and the unit works as advertised but, I started out frustrated and somewhat disappointed that the 7 pin inline connector harness did not work. I spent a lot of time troubleshooting the reason I could not get power to the monitor, I had power on both sides of my factory plug when the vehicle was put in reverse but when I plugged the Hopkins harness in I had power from the OEM harness but no power coming out of the Hopkins plug. I was not able to use the Hopkins harness but instead hard tapped onto the OEM reverse power conductor at the plug with the red wire and grounded the black wire nearby on the vehicles frame. I elected to run the cable from the camera to the monitor in the truck cab by following and attaching to the OEM wiring loom that went along the frame rail on the Drivers side of the vehicle, this route kept everything away from exhaust components but first I put the cable inside some plastic loom for added protection and used one of those 36" flexible grabber tools that you push with your thumb and it opens up the three little wire "jaws" at the end. That tool was really handy to help snake and grab the cable in those hard to get to areas. I ended up drilling a hole and brought the cable into the wire raceway on the door sill then ran under the carpet up and into the back of the console. On my vehicle there is a little "cubby" hole in the dash that was the perfect size and place to mount the monitor. I took out some of the trim and drilled a hole into the back of that plastic cubby hole then ran the cable into that, connected the monitor to the cable then used some 3M red adhesive body tape to attach the monitor to the cubby hole and console trim. So far so good! 417418

Easy kit to install! Great picture as it's a wired system so no flickering. Simple to unplug the factory harness and plug the Hopkins harness in. Then run the wire up under the bed/cab and zip tie in place to keep from flopping around. I have an '04 Silverado Crew cab with a 6 1/2' bed and I ran the wire up into the engine compartment and thru a grommet in the upper drivers side of the engine bay. Mounted the screen in the center console area by the cig lighter and had about a 1/2' of spare wire left... Great value! 143120

I have an 07 Classic Silverado Crew with a 6.5 bed. Did you need the extension cable to connect the wires to the cab? Thank you

No, did not need the extension cable. Placing the screen up on top of the dash and Im betting you would....I did ask for and receive the extension tho, just didnt need it. But - I think Ill use it as Im planning on modifying the camera location by putting it up on the tailgate handle to get more of a downward view of the receiver. The lens as it is now is too level with the receiverbumper so it has to be real close before its there... System is still a great bargain!

I purchased the hard wired back up camera because I wanted a good clear picture and did not want to worry about wifi or Bluetooth interference. The camera took about an hour total to install. I adjusted the sensors, screwed the camera and sensor assembly along with the license plate onto the back of the truck. Pushed the tab on the 7 way plug connecter to take the OEM coupler apart, put the jumper in place and then just routed the wires towards the cab. I cut a "Plus sign" slit in the grommet in the floor, this grommet was about 8" from the sill plate and about even with the front edge of the front door opening. I had to pull the LH front sill plate off as well as the LH kick panel, and pulled the floor matt back. I do not have carpet in my truck but the process would be the same. I ran the wiring through the grommet and then up the LH A-pillar and above the headliner. I had to use the 5' jumper wire in order to run it up the A-pillar. I mounted the display screen in the top left corner of my windshield, very convenient yet out of the way. The display is very clear and the sensors read very well, when the beeps go to a "constant on" I am about 4" from an object. This seems close but the bumper is about 4 to 5" deep where the plate and camera assembly are mounted. The only thing I that gave me trouble was squeezing the OEM 7 way coupler onto the jumper wire that was provided, I originally installed the entire unit and it quit working, vibration when driving had caused the coupler to pull apart just enough to kill the camera. This was an easy fix and it works perfect now. I would definitely recommend this camera to a friend. 173009

Followed the installation instructions from the video provided on the website and it was a breeze. I recommend using conduit to protect the wire at the beginning and end of the feed through the frame. I also used it to protect the wire and connections at the rear of the vehicle (tape connections as suggested in video). I mounted my camera in the center dashboard console and hid the wire for a custom installation. I ran the wire along the knee console under the steering column and fed the wire upwards. I pulled the front dash console which requires using a plastic tool so you don't mess up the dash (very easy to do-check youtube). I drilled a hole in the top of the center console and fed the monitor wire down and connected the wire coming from the camera and tucked above the radio. This can only be done if you remove the face of the radio. Again, make sure you use a plastic tool to remove the radio face and watch a video. It looks great in the vehicle. 167508

Gary how did you mount the camera to the pocket on the dash above the radio? To keep it from moving?

Hello Scotty,The unit comes with double sided tape to mount. I trimmed the rubber mat around the base of the unit that lays in the pocket. You cant see the base as it is hidden by the raised edge of the pocket. Thanks.

I received the Hopkins back up camera and installed it the same night. It took a little over 2 hours to install in a sedan. The hardest part was figuring out how and where to drill a hole from through the trunk of the car for the cable from the license plate to go through. Once that was done, it was just a matter of fishing the cable through the thresholds, etc all the way to the dash. Once it was hooked up, I was very pleased with the quality of the image and the speed with which it turns on once the car is put in reverse. The screen is a bit small and I would prefer it to be a 5" screen for better visibility. Having said that, it is still a sharp image and the reference lines are great. The addition of the proximity sensors is a huge bonus, as my car did not have sensors. Overall, great system, easy to install (though you need to be able to figure out how to get the wire from the rear of the vehicle to the dash, which takes some thought and effort), and good image. Once again, I only wish the screen was slightly larger. I have read reviews of water penetration into the license plate system over the course of a year, destroying the unit. So I did use some clear sealant and put it over the screws, where the wires go into the unit, and around the casing for extra protection before I installed it. One other issue was I had to go to the store and get new license plate screws. With this unit, my screws were no longer long enough. The "license plate screws" provided with the unit were not machine screws, but were essentially large screws for wood, so were worthless. 407890

I wrote the review for the extension cable; the same applies. I forgot to add that I routed my cable to the front by following and tie-wrapping to the existing main wiring harness. It works well. The extension cable is needed for a Cheverolet crewcab long bed truck. I lacked mounting real estate on my 2500HD, so I found the left side next to the vent as the only available space. It also allows me to look at my side mirror easily. I preferred to splice it into my taillight; I felt the supplied 7 pin connector was not as heavy duty as factory. The wire colors were not as shown in instructions. I ended up using a volt/ohm/amp meter to determine which wires were 12 volt and ground. The splice connectors that I bought were too large for the backup camera wire; they were yellow size. You will need blue or even red. I used anticorrosion paste on the wire splices to prevent future problems. 167658

The backup camera has been a great. My truck does not really have a good place the monitor, but this is not the fault of the camera. Just an observation.

I had researched backup camera systems for my 2006 Dodge Ram 1500. I had gone in to one of the electronic stores to actually see what my options were. When I came to etrailer.com and saw the Hopkins Smart Hitch, I was impressed with the price and the features of the camera. I had looked at Garmin, Rand McNally, and a few others that were over twice the cost and had fewer options. I called etrailer to make sure the unit would fit in my truck, Michelle was very helpful and took my order. The unit was shipped that day and was delivered within 3 to 4 days. I had it professionally installed, though I know I could have done it myself. I am really pleased with all aspects of this camera. The audible signal (not available on some of the higher priced cameras) is really helpful - and the green, yellow, red bars give a true perspective of the proximity of obstacles. Being able to toggle between trailer hitch mode, and everyday backup mode is as easy as pushing a button. I really don't think you'll find a better camera for the price. And, etrailer's customer service is excellent. 316277

Thank you for the follow up. I do like the camera, and it has worked really well. The only thing that has changed is that I dont get the visual marker lines showing up any more. They come on for the first few seconds and then turn off. The camera works perfectly other than that.

This review pertains to the installation in a 2011 Ram 2500 diesel. Watched the video for the 2009 2500 series which helped considerably. I was thankful that the trailer plug hookup was plug and play with no cutting or splicing. After the initial hook up to the trailer plug I attached the video screen and placed the truck in reverse just to see if there were any problems; none were observed. Next I placed the license tag holder/rear sensors and camera then the screen next to and above the rear view mirror on the left side as shown in the video. I then ran the 5' extra screen cord under the headliner and behind the left grab panel so I would not have to stuff all the extra video cord under the headliner. The grab handle post was loosened by removing the mounting screws (note: they are a 10mm size and the bolt covers pry up as follows: the top one from the bottom and the bottom one from the top). The video cable was run along side of the left side frame beside electrical wiring. The left side door sill was removed along with the kick panel. A hole was drilled in the floor, per the video, with a 1/2" drill bit. Connection was made with the cord from the screen and the extra cord was left in the floor just before the kick panel. Was plenty of room to do that. The entire operation took about an hour without rushing. I probably spent more time trying to place the screen exactly the way I wanted it than any of the other steps. 164371

This is the best invention since the shirt pocket, Kinda got tired of trying backing up 10 times to hit the trailer ball or taking had signals from the wife is even worse, until This little gadget came along.. It works great!!, main video wire is a little too short so you guys with 4 door trucks are gonna probably come up short if you're mounting the monitor by your rear view mirror, I have a 02 Dodge standard cab w/9' flat bed and it took every bit of the video cable to make the stretch, might go ahead and buy an extension cable if they make one. Other than that gripe ,,, I love it!!! 147529

Very impressed with the clear bright screen on this low cost back up cameras. I had seen it on other etrailer employees cars and decided to install (2) on my 5 Ton M923 Military Truck. One is front facing the other in the standard backup position. Wired up 2 power switches so I could turn them on or off as needed. Turned out great, anything to help see the blind spots makes it safer for everyone. 151925

Ordered the Hopkins Smart Hitch back up Camera and Hitch Aligner System, arrived as promised. Have not had a chance to install as yet, but looks to be exactly what I need. Etrailer was a pleasure to work with, stayed in contact with me through the entire process, from placing order through delivery. They then went the extra mile, contacted me after notification of delivery to see if I was satisfied with my order. This is almost unheard of in today's buisness world. Great company to work with, will certainly be doing more buisness with them. 162090

After install, could not be happier with purchase, only regret is that I did not purchase sooner. Install was very easy, layed cable out, identified ingress into cab, went to work. Install completed in about 20 minutes. Camera works perfect, excellent image, works as stated. Could not be happier with purchase.

I'm pleasantly surprised by the ease of installation of this product and it does exactly what I want it to do. I have a 2013 Chevy Silverado 2500, and after climbing under the bumper I was able to twist out the 7-way/pole connector and slip in the provided connector, then string the wire up the chassis. I did have a problem finding and entrance point into the cab, then I simply drilled a 1/2" hole in a grommet under the drivers seat and then popped up the trim panel at the door and snaked it up the edge and managed to tuck everything in and pop it out at the dash over the steering wheel. One note... I barely had enough wire from the connector in back to stretch it to the monitor to reach the dash at the very left where the wire came up so if you want to tuck it into the headliner and out at your rear view mirror, buy the extender wire. I have an 8' bed and a crew cab, but I still think with other body styles it would still be a good idea to get the extender wire for that application. Gives a great shot of the trailer hitch sliding right under my trailer... No more hopping out 5 times to get it exactly right... 138205

I installed this on a 2002 Chev Tahoe. Instructions were very easy to follow. The sensor portion mounted behind the license plate and then run the wire cable to the front. I entered the cab along side the parking brake cable from below and by removing the left side kick panel and the A-pillar post cover I was able to run it up to the left hand side of the dash. I mounted the monitor on top of the dash, but all the way to the left lower corner. The picture is great and is just the right size. 208089

I have had this a year now and it is still working great. This is so nice not to have to get out and check to see how close you are to the trailer. I really like the size of the screen, it is big enough to give detail, but small enough to not take up too much room. Very happy with this product.

We found this back up camera system to be easy to install and recognized how much of a convenience this will be in hitching our utility trailer to our Ford Sport Trac. Most of the wiring could be run internally within the truck frame and then pulled up through a grommet in the drivers floor panel There was sufficient cable to mount the monitor near the rear view mirror. I would highly recommend this system to anyone. etrailer.com was very good to work with. 160648

Overall this is a good product. Easy to install, took about an hour. Note for Ford F150 installation - if you haven't used your 7 pin trailer connector, make sure you have a relay in your fuse junction box located under the hood. Camera works very well . . . with the hitch mode, I was able to back the truck up to within an inch of the trailer. This will make those predawn solo hook ups a lot easier. Would have rated this higher, but felt to make this an excellent product the manufacturer should improve a couple of issues. Sensors cover the license plates state registration tags and screw connector should be added to the video cable. 168900

I am very pleased with the quality of the product and the features that are included. I do think the instructions could be more complete. Just adding a few words here and there with perhaps an illustration or two would make things go more quickly. It was not immediately obvious to me what the OME connector was. It was suggested that you run the connecting wire from front to back. Because of the large electrical connect on the end of the wire that was to end up near the back it seemed most logical to me to run the wire from back to front. The enabled me to string the wire through a series of holes in the frame and wire looms. This also provided more flexibility in where I placed the screen in the cab. The calibration marks on the sensors were not immediately apparent and I never found a mark with which to align them. All of that said, I was able to install the unit without undue trouble and am very happy with the result. I appreciate the fact that all of hardware was provided for alternate installations (with or without and OME trailer plug). This is a great product that is a good value. Thanks 171137

The installation instructions were easy enough , the product works good .The screen was smaller than I thought it would be ,but it has a good picture and it turned out to be perfect for the size of the dash area without blocking visability . I called Hopkins MFG. support because I thought I had a malfuntioning unit, they were eager to send a replacement , but I found the problem was low electric power while I was setting up the unit ,battery went to low for camera to operate . With vehicle running NO more problems . I bought and installed 2 units I like them both . 167430

I was told by the manufacturer that it was normally a computer chip problem and to remove power and start it again. This worked well for about a week and then the same problem occurred. I installed this backup camera on my 2006 F250 Crew Cab 6.5' bed, but I only used it for a couple of months before I sold the truck. It worked great and was a very straight forward install. I liked the coupler for the 7-pin connector as I didn't have to directly wire it to the backup lights. Just connect the coupler and run the camera cable to the cab. I mounted the display to the left of the steering wheel near the headlight switch. It was out of the way, yet it was easy to see and control. I was lucky to have a hole in the floor with a rubber grommet already installed on the driver side, so it was just a matter of cutting a hole in the grommet for the cable and sealing it with some silicone. I had enough cable to reach the dash, but if I wanted to mount it above the windshield, I would have needed an extension. My truck is about 20' long total. I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 because of the quality of some of the plastic components. I feel they could have been made better. Hey...for the price, though, this camera was pretty darn good. 168860

Installation went well as advertised. Most difficult part was running the video cable along truck frame and into cab through grommet under floor carpet. It really helped to watch an installation video that I found on the internet that showed the installation on a truck the same model as mine. The video quality on the monitor is good, and the hitch alignment mode works well. Based on four days of experience, I would certainly recommend this product to anyone wanting a back-up camera and hitch alignment system. 228953

I bought this back-up camera for a Chevy Express van conversion RV. It may work well, time will tell, but do not try to mount it in the rear license plate area of the Chevy Express Van. The license plate light interferes with placement. Choose instead the rear bumper to mount this camera. I wish the Hopkins company would be truthful about this "license plate camera mount" not fitting in the license plate area of a Chevy Express Van. 134090

I received your B.U. camera in a timely fashion & in good condition. The installation went very well, except I did not have power to the B.U. terminal in my OEM trailer plug, so I wired it direct to my B.U. lights. Everything works fine with the unit & makes trailer hookups very easy & quick. Arrived in good time in good order. Installed on my 2002 Ford F250 Extended Cab Short Bed. Disconnecting the factory connector was a minor pain. Fishing the cable to the cab was the next worse part and would be easier if one has access to a lift. Cab access was through a floor grommet near the accelerator. I ran up behind the dash beside the steering column. The display was mounted on a bare spot on the dash face. This keeps it out of the sun and excessive heating which seems to cause issues for some. The supplied cable was just long enough and I didn't need the 5' extension I had ordered. Anywhere else and it would be needed. The 7-pin connector needed a tweak to seat completely and the unit came to life. Works well and I like it. The camera location may need some protection with a shield if there is a lot of bed debris from hauling sand or gravel etc. The left sensor partially blocks the spare tire mechanism access hole but not a big deal. Happy so far. 294705

The camera and guide markings work great for hitching a trailer up by one person. The connections would have been really easy if I had an OEM 7 pin plug, which I didn't, but it wasn't really a big deal. I agree with several other reviewers that the included cables are kind of short, but long enough for my application. I think you can order extensions, if necessary. 129024

The Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup System was very easy to install and use. The plug and play electrical hookups work great on my 2012 Ram 2500. Routing the wire was the most time consuming for me because I routed the wire inside the frame. And Hopkins sent an extension wire free to fit my truck. It is very convenient to see and hear how close the objects behind you are besides hooking up a trailer just parking in general is made easier with this system. 130973

Installed my smart hitch camera today and it was easy to do, even for an old guy. The hardest part was getting under the truck to run the monitor cable. Whole process took about an hour. I have an 05 Ram 1500 with factory tow package, however my 7way has a square plug behind the bumper so I had to splice my wire instead of using the T-plug but was still easy to do. The camera works great and I am very pleased with it. Now when I hookup my boat or my RV I won't have to have my wife help. I also won't have to get out and check where the ball is 2 or 3 times again. The videos etrailer have up shows exactly what you have to do in great detail so if you are thinking about getting one and installing it yourself, go for it! 173389

Brad,No, I needed no extra cable. I mounted my monitor in the upper left top of windshield. I ran the cable up thru the molding left of the dash and up inside the molding left of windshield.

Installed easily. Operated as advertised and is a great help in hitching up to my popup. Now the rest of the story. I lost my hitch lines on the display and called e trailer to see if they could help me with the date I bought the unit. This was just before Labor Day . I then called Hopkins with a description of the trouble and He decided that trouble was in the license plate holder and shipped me a new one not even knowing how long I had the unit ( 2 weeks over a year). Tuesday I got an E-Mail from e trailer with the date I had ordered the unit and word that he was sending me an authorization to return unit for testing. I have spent money with these people to outfit my Ranger and Honda civic with trailer hitches, brake controller and wire harness for both. I had a problem and they got on it fast. Will continue to do business with them in the future and recommend them to anyone for all your towing needs without reservation. One Happy Customer. 292211

About a year ago I purchased a Hopkins SmartHitch backup cameras and alarm system. Within six months it failed to sound the alarm when approaching an object and the hitch lines on the display would only display for a few seconds. Unable to locate the date of purchase and going through the hassle of contacting e-trailer or Hopkins I continued using it to connect to the trailer using the monitor only. Today I received an e-mail from (Laura) at e-trailer letting me know that I had purchased the Hopkins SmartHitch about a year ago and wanted to follow up to make sure I like the product after owning it for a year. I took the opportunity to mention this to the rep of e-trailer who gave me the number of (Kriss Carter) the Hopkins tech. Asking if I could send him a copy of the e-mail I had received from e-trailer he told me that he would send me a new unit. Could not believe the ease of getting the unit replaced. Should have called six months ago. 321081

I installed a wired backup camera in my 2013 Silverado. There was an excellent online video which took me through every step. The camera works beautifully. The installation was easier than I expected. My only problem was in figuring out how to release the latch holding together the two parts of the seven pin connector on the truck. 224363

I have had this product for over a year now and it is still working like the first day I installed it. By the way it was easy to install and only took me about an hour. Some one with more experience could do it in less time. I have trouble seeing what I am backing into and with this camera I find it easier to park. My truck being long it is hard to pull into a parking space and I find it easier to back in. Before I was always afraid of hitting the car behind me. With this backup camera I can see where I am at and the warning sound alerts me when I am close enough with out hitting the car behind me. When hauling a trailer I am able to see where the hitch is in relation to the ball on my truck. I now only need to back up once to get it right and do not need someone behind me telling me how far away I am and if I am to the left or right of the hitch. This is a good and inexpensive camera and a great addition to my truck. 452508

Very useful backup camera system. I bought this mostly for connecting my large camping trailer to my F-150, but it's great for everyday too, like backing my truck into my garage in very tight quarters. Love it! And eTrailer kept me informed, made sure everything showed up on time and was well packaged. Good job, good product, I'm pleased. 163747

I hooked up the Hopkins Smart Hitch this past weekend on my 2002 F150 4x4 - Lariat. I must say, as indicated you your web site the installation was relative easy (considering my age) but very easy. And the camera is great! I have it mounted on my dash board only because I haven't really decided where it would best fit for me. And for the price and ease of installation you can’t beat it. Here’s the kicker, my wife was very skeptical when I told her I had ordered it. But after I installed it, or should I say, when she asked if I needed help installing it, I said no, that I was all finished. Her comment, “That was fast”. So I had to give her a tour of what I had done. When I showed her the working the camera, she was really surprised! The only extra I had to do was buy the relay fuse (R3146), which the older Fords initially do not install. It’s a great Trailer Hitch and Back Up Camera! What can I say "I love it! " 307990

Camera arrived in great shape. I have a '95 Ford F350 with tow package and it is not plug n play. The box has specific models that are plug n play. This needs to be added to description. But no worry, I spliced camera into my backup lights which are the stock ones and 2 small "fog lamps" under the bumper. They light up the boat ramp at night which is helpful. Unfortunately, the camera is voltage sensitive. The camera works with 3 lights on but not a fourth. Didn't matter which one I took out of the circuit. As so as I unplugged a light, camera turned on. I'm sure I can get it to work with a small 12v relay and extra wiring. It definitely needs the extra wire length with a crew cab & 8' bed. 162753

This review is more on the excellent customer service at etrailer.com than the product. The hopkins backup camera is a great product, installed it on my F 250 for my wife when she's hooking up to our trailer, she couldn't be happier. I do a lot of shopping online usually looking for the best price. Etrailer.com had the lowest price but I also discovered they have the best customer service of any company I've dealt with online. I called before purchasing the camera with a few questions which were answered happily and knowledgably. The shipping was quite fast and even received an email wanting to know if the product had arrived and if I was happy with it. I would recommend etrailer.com to anyone looking for a low price and great customer service. I will certainly recommend etrailer.com to all my friends and make any future purchases for my vehicles from this company. 348156

the Hopkins backup camera system has got to be the best buy for the price over any other system I have found. I have had several of these types of cameras installed in my trucks and none come close to this one. very simple to install and the alarm sensors work great. everything is adjustable and I installed this in a 2005 Chevy Silverado crew cab and had enough cable to run the screen up into the top center of the windshield. fantastic product, and worth every penny! 130953

I just drilled a hole in the cab floor on drivers side near the rear corner and used a rubber grommet. the other option you may want to try is the trans shifter cable under the driver floor carpet in front of the driver seat. you will have to pull the edge trim and access it from the kick panel.

The product seems to work well. The install was simple and easy, it just plugged in. The most time consuming part was running the wire into the cab. The only problem is the monitor is hard to see if the sun is shinning on it. I am going to make a sun shield for the screen and hope it helps. 130970

  • Backup Camera that Will Plug In Line with a 7-Way Trailer Connector on a 2005 Toyota Tundra
  • We actually have a backup camera that you can plug in line with the 7-Way trailer connector. Take a look at # HM50002. I have linked a video showing an installation for you. As you can see, it will just plug in line with the 7-Way and retain all the trailer connector functions. If your 7-Way on your 2005 Toyota Tundra is not a US car connector type that accepts the plugs then the wiring does have provisions for being hardwired in.
