Video Transcript for Ultimate Overview of the Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler w/ High-Profile Latch

Today were going to take a quick look at the Bulldog collar lock Coupler with high profile latch part number bd028386. Now Bulldog covers this coupler with a limited five year warranty. It has a gross trailer capacity of 7,000 pounds. Its designed to be used with two inch trailer balls and 50 degree A-frame trailers. It also has the standard configuration for mounting a jack and a large center hole for the body of the jack as well as three slotted holes for the hardware to secure it. Now this is a weld on coupler so youll just weld along the edges of the coupler to secure it to your trailers frame.

Now were going to over the latching mechanism and show you how it works. Theres a pin in the latch that keeps it from being opened unintentionally. Youll need to remove this pin in order to open the coupler. You can also replace the pin with a coupler lock that prevents the latch from opening again securing your trailer when traveling down the road but it also helps protect against theft when storing your trailer for the winter. So first well remove this pin so we can operate our coupler.

As we pull this latch open its going to pull back on our linkage sliding the collar back and then the hinge jaw on the coupler head will open up. The jaws spring loaded so its going to come open automatically and it provides a shoulder for the collar to rest against so that it wont close. To close it well hold the collar back, close the jaw and let the collar slide forward. Now weve got with us a two inch trailer ball so that we can show how it works with an actual ball. Again well pull the latch back and the jaw pops open.

We can then fit our ball into the socket. Well hold our collar back, close the hinge and let the collar slide forward onto the jaw. Now our ball is secure and completely captive but its got enough movement that the trailer will track smoothly behind the tow vehicle. Well pull our jaw open, our balls release and our trailers unhooked. Thats it for a quick look at the Bulldog collar lock Coupler with high profile latch part number bd028386..

  • Troubleshooting Lubrication and Friction Issues on a Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler
I sure do! I recommend spraying all the moving parts and the areas around them on your Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler item # BD028386 with WD-40. Use an excessive amount and completely saturate your coupler and let it sit. Make sure you spray it inside the collar lock really well. Come back a day or so later and take a rag and clean everything off really well. This will remove all the old lube and the dirt/debris that has built up. Afterwards you can reapply some lithium grease like item # L11316.

  • Recommended Weld-On A-Frame Trailer Coupler For A Teardrop Camper Build
For your teardrop camper build I recommend the Demco A-Frame Trailer Coupler w/ Jack Hole # DM14791-97 over the Bulldog # BD028386 you were looking at. The latch style of the Demco is much easier and in my own personal opinion a safer design. The eZ-Latch does not need to be tugged or manually activated to allow the ball into the coupler socket, nor does it have to be secured in place. Just make sure that the coupler is properly lined up with the ball when you lower it, and the rest is...

  • Why Are The Sides Of The A-Frame Trailer Coupler Angled Out Slightly?
Most square frame tubing will actually have a swelling in the steel that causes the frame to not be an exact rectangle. This is why you will see a bit of an angle on the Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler # BD028386. I suggest using a large clamp to pull the steel as close together as possible. Be careful that the clap does not distort the inside wall of the steel tubing as this will weaken the steel and possibly cause the angle to increase. The heat from the welding process will help to pull...

  • How To Couple and Uncouple a Bulldog Style Trailer Coupler
I have attached for you a photo that shows the proper sequence to couple and uncouple a Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler like the part # BD028386. To summarize, see below: To Couple: 1) Block trailer wheels. 2) Align hitch ball beneath coupler. 3) If the coupler is closed, open it by removing the pin in the latch and lifting the latch. Be sure the coupler cap is open and holds the collar back. 4) Lower the trailer onto the hitch ball. 5) Visually check that the hitch ball is fully seated in...

  • Can Bulldog Collar -Lok Couplers be Locked While Towing the Trailer
Towing coupler locks, as they are called, are not as common as they used to be. We have numerous coupler locks but none that will work with coupler # BD028386 while the trailer is being towed. What you could do is use a latch lock such as # e98888 so that the latch cannot be opened and thus the trailer cannot be uncoupled from the ball.

  • Can the Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler Be Used With An Anderson Weight Distribution Hitch
There is no reason that you should not be able to use the Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler part # BD028386 with your Anderson Weight Distribution Hitch. I am not very familiar with the Anderson Weight Distribution Hitch as this is not a product we offer but I did some research on it and do not see anything that would negate use with the Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler.
