Video Transcript for Review of Bulldog A-Frame Trailer Coupler - Standard Coupler - BD028287

Hello everybody, this is Jeff for etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Bulldog A-Frame Collar-Lok Coupler, with the low profile latch. Fits a two-inch hitch ball, has a 7,000 pound weight capacity. Now this is a nice heavy duty coupler. It's ideal for utility, livestock, cargo, any construction trailers. This one has a collar lock design, so it offers an automatic continuously tight fit for absolute security.

They use the hinge ball sock here, makes hookup a snap. And if you notice, it includes this, tethered safety pinning clip to keep the socket locked around the ball. This is made of a high strength steel, which is very durable, has a nice gray finish to it. And if you notice right back here, it'll have the built in jack attachment point, which allows for a quick, easy mounting of a round utility jack. The diameter of this hole opening is two and a quarter inches.

So most of your round utility jacks will fit right in there. Has the standard bolt pattern, which will fit most of the jacks. And I'll give you a visual indication of proper closure, provides an additional peace of mind. We mentioned the low-profile latch right here is very easy to use, and sleek in appearance, but basically what you would do is just unhitch your clip here, slide your pin out, and again, it's tethered, so you won't lose it. And then to open that if you just rotate this latch, and you push that latch all the way back, it slides that collar off, and then it has a spring loaded hinge ball socket, right here.

That'll go over your two inch ball. Once it goes over your two inch ball, and all you have to do is push this back, in it's spring loaded. You push that back in, slide your collar up over that, and it'll lock it into place. And then once you get it locked over the ball, just go ahead and take your pin for safety, slide it through the hole, clip it on the other side, and you're all set, ready to go. Simple as that.

A few specs on this, this is designed to fit a 50 degree A-Frame trailer tongue. The ball size it fits on is a two inch diameter ball. Total length on this part from back here to very tip, is going to be right at 16 inches. And again, the weight capacity is 7,000 pounds. But that should do it for the review on the Bulldog A-frame Collar-Lok Coupler, with the low-profile latch for a two inch ball. has a 7,000 pound weight capacity..

This is a great coupler, and the price is the best I have found. It went on very easily over the top of the original one that was on my horse trailer.

Product was exactly as advertised, and got here earlier than expected. I plan to use it on an old pickup truck frame which I am converting into a pull behind trailer. Staff very helpful and efficient.

  • A Frame Coupler Recommendation for 2 inch Ball with 7k Capacity

  • How Does Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler # BD028287 Work Differently than Other Couplers
Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler # BD028287 and similar couplers have a sleeve that constantly puts pressure on the front of the coupler, the part that goes around the ball, so that it cannot come loose. There is also more surface area of the coupler making contact with the ball. Traditional couplers use what is essentially a wedge. The fit is predetermined and can me manually adjusted on some couplers by tightening or loosening a bolt or nut in the wedge/latch mechanism. This design can get...

  • Can the Hinged Ball Socket Mechanism On A Bulldog Trailer Coupler Be Repaired
I absolutely do not recommend trying to repair your trailer coupler as this could be very dangerous to both you and others on the road. The hinged ball socket mechanism that is on your trailer coupler is not repairable. Therefore, your only option is to replace the entire coupler for which we have the Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler part # BD028287 that uses a 2" hitch ball and has a 7,000 lb weight capacity.

If you have a Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler, then the EZ Lock Trailer Coupler Lock for 1-7/8", 2", 2-5/16" Bulldog Collar-Lok Couplers # BLTL-20-40D is your best option. If you want the pin style coupler lock, then the Bulldog Easy Access Coupler Lock - Swivel Head - Chrome # BD580409 is the largest span option at 3-5/8 inches.

  • Availability Of Keyed Alike Locks For Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler # BD028287 And Trailer Hitch
If you are needing a lock for the Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler w/ Low-Profile Latch, part # BD028287, and a lock for the hitch receiver on your vehicle that are keyed alike you can use the Deadbolt brand lock. For your Bulldog coupler you would have to use the Trailer Coupler Lock, part # e98888. This is a coupler lock with an inside width of 3-3/8 inches. I pulled the Bulldog coupler from our warehouse and measured the size of the lock pin that goes in the coupler. It measured 5/16 inch...

  • Availability of a Locking Pin for the Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler with Low Profile Latch
Yes, I recommend the etrailer.com coupler lock # e98888 because it can replace the existing pin and it will fit inside the Bulldog Collar-Lok # BD028287. Just in case you don't have a lock for your hitch receiver, I recommend etrailer.com hitch receiver lock # e98880, that has an inside width of 2-5/8 inches for a 2 inch hitch. If you have a 2-1/2 inch hitch you can use the etrailer.com hitch receiver lock # e98881, that has an inside width of 3-1/16 inches. I included several video...

In order to ensure you get the full capacity of the Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler w/ Low-Profile Latch # BD028287 you would need to have a qualified welder weld it on. We can't safely recommend bolting it on.

  • How to Get a Replacement Spring for a Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler
Your best option that I can provide for you would be to get the Bulldog High-Profile Latch Repair Kit # BD024200. This comes with the spring and a few other components that you might not need now-but could need in the future and would be nice to keep around as spares. We do not have the spring by itself so this would be the best option I could provide for you.

  • Compatibility of etrailer Coupler Lock on a 2-5/16 Inch Bulldog Coupler
Good news, I can help you figure out if this coupler lock will fit your Bulldog coupler. As long as your pin diameter on the Bulldog coupler is larger than a 1/4 inch and the span is no bigger than 3-3/8 inches, then this coupler lock will work for you. I pulled the Bulldog coupler # BD028287 you had looked at from our warehouse and a similar style 2-5/16 inch # BD028499 and measured the size of the lock pin that goes in the coupler. It measured 5/16 inch diameter and a length of 2-3/4...

  • Coupler Recommendation for Trailer to be Used when Loading Vehicles on Trailer
As far as coupler style go I would go with a Collar Lok Bulldog part # BD028287 since the mechanism that holds the coupler to the ball is very sturdy and would be very unlikely to get damaged from the tongue weight pulling up when loading your trailer. Not saying a trigger latch would be an issue, but the Collar Lok just has a much larger clamp to spread out the weight of the trailer.

  • Is There a Bulldog Low-Profile Latch Replacement or Repair Kit Available
I may have a solution for you, but unfortunately in this case you can't find one because these low profile latches are not available as a replacement part according to my contact at Horizon Global (who own Bulldog). If your latch has broken or is no longer working then you would need to replace the coupler and the # BD028287 would be the recommended replacement as it would be a like for like swap.
