Roadmaster Anti-Sway Bar Installed

Benefits of an Anti-Sway System

The Roadmaster anti-sway bar does for side-to-side movement what a good pair of shocks does for up-and-down motion. You will notice a marked improvement in your vehicle's stability as the bar works to balance weight transfer and reduce body roll. The anti-sway bar acts as a link between your vehicle's frame and its front axle, using the axle as a brace to more effectively balance the shifting weight of your vehicle as you maneuver it. Lubricated bushings allow just enough pivot and rotation to compensate for the pressure placed on one side of your vehicle when it goes into sudden maneuvers, hits crosswinds or encounters shifting weights.

Roadmaster Anti-Sway Polyurethane Bushings

Superior Construction

The Roadmaster anti-sway bar is made of 4140 chromoly, a chromium and molybdenum steel alloy. This type of steel is considerably harder and stronger than the standard 1020 steel that is typically used in anti-sway applications. In addition, the larger diameter of the bar increases its torsional roll stiffness. The result is a bar that is not only stronger than the competition, but also nearly 30 percent better at resisting sway. The polyurethane bushings and grommets used at the attachment points are durable yet flexible, ensuring that the system is neither so rigid nor so malleable that it becomes ineffective.

Video Transcript for Roadmaster Front Anti-Sway Bar Installation - 2017 Ford E-Series Cutaway

Today on our 2017 40 series cutaway, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Roadmaster front anti-sway bar. Our front sway bar from Roadmaster is going to be a replacement for our factory sway bar. It's going to be a thicker, more robust sway bar. That's going to have greater anti-sway properties. Your anti-sway bar connects between one side of your suspension and then it connects to the other side. And then it's also bolted to the frame. Whenever your body on your vehicle begins to roll, it has to flex the sway bar in order to roll.

What this means for you is you're going to have greater control over your vehicle because you're not going to have so much of that body sway that you're going to have to compensate for in the wheel. This results in having less fatigue when going on a long road trip. When you get to your destination, you can enjoy the things you want to do to give you an idea of how much larger and more robust our Roadmaster sway bar is. I'm holding up the factory sway bar that we removed from this vehicle before we put our Roadmaster sway bar on, and you can see there's a definite size difference between our factory and our new Roadmaster sway bar.The extra steel that you see here is going to greatly reduce that amount of sway, because it's going to have so much more force keeping our vehicle straight up and down. And if we do have a little bit of sway, the sway bar is going to return us to center even faster, keeping us nice and upright, maintaining that control over our vehicle. Ultimately, when you get to your destination, you're going to have more energy because you weren't fighting your RV on your way to getting there. This is going to be a great sway bar, whether you're upgrading your existing sway bar to gain all the benefits we just discussed, or if you're going to be doing some repairs to your motor home, because sway bar end links do go bad.

Your factory ones, at some point are going to go bad before the buy for your vehicle does when that time comes, why put on factory equipment when you can get all the benefits that we have our Roadmaster here to further make our vehicle more controllable and safer for our family going down the road, I'd recommend also picking up a rear sway bar from Roadmaster and installing that as well. The rear sway bar, unlike our front sway bar installs in addition to your existing rear sway bars they'll have two sway bars in the back, but to even further that, to get the ultimate ride comfort and controllability, you can add a set of Sumo Springs onto your vehicle as well. Those suspension enhancements go between your axle and the frame. And whenever you have any sway, it compresses those and they want to push back so they assist your sway bar. But our sway bars only affect us rolling back and forth. The Sumo Springs will also help us on just regular bounce. When we're going over, even bounces where it's not swaying, but we've got more front to back movement, you'll get a benefit from those as well.

We're now out driving our RV with just the factory front sway bar installed. And I can tell when we hit our bumps here, it really wants throw you back and forth and you can feel it in the steering wheel, how it wants to jar in a direction. That's when we're hitting the bumps, but when it hits those and it starts to jar, you really feel the vehicle started to sway back and forth with it, hoping here with our new sway bar, we're going to minimize it to help have better control as we're going down the road here, we're getting ready to go into our slalom up here. We're going to see how it reacts with our factory sway bar. Even with a little bit of turn, not even something that would be that evasive.I can already feel a big drift to one side, to the point where I don't want to go any harder to minimize the risk of rollover. We'll begin our installation underneath the front of the vehicle.

This is our factory sway bar here. We're going to remove our factory sway bar. We'll start the removal at the end links by removing the nut on the lower portion of the end link. We'll use an 18 millimeter wrench to remove the nut on our end link. Then you can just slide the end, link out. It's okay if it doesn't come all the way out at this point, not a big deal. It'll come out once we get the other side and the other bolts loose, but we just need that loose. We're going to get the other side loose, just like that. We're going to take down our sway bar bushing clamps. The front bolt is going to be an 18 millimeter socket to remove it. And the rear bolt is going to be a 15 millimeter socket. Once we get this side loose, the sway bar is going to hold itself up due to the other clamp. Once we take the other clamp loose, the whole sway bar is going to come down. Then we'll remove the rear one with our 15 millimeter socket. And you'll see here that our bar's wanting to drop down, but it's going to hold itself up until we take the bolts out on the same clamp on the opposite side. We're going to do that now. And then we'll take our sway bar out. With our last bolt out, the sway bar will drop down and then you can just lift it up over your steering stabilizer ii gets caught or anything you might proceed to unhook it.And we'll just set it aside. Make sure you take your clamps off, they'll just slide off the rubber. We'll take the one off the other side as well. We'll now take the new sway bar and links that come in our kit. We're going to feed it up and then slide it through where our factory sway bar link fed through. Take the nylock nut that comes included with the kit and thread it on the other side, we're going to do the same thing on the opposite side of the vehicle. We'll have a link like this on each side, then take your new sway bar and we're going to slide it onto the end link. Now you want to pay attention to the orientation that you're putting your sway bar on. There is a dip towards the middle, that dip needs to be down. As your sway bar goes across the front, it's going to dip down in the middle. Slide the end of your sway bar over the sway bar end link on one side, thread a nut on the opposite side, you have to angle the sway bar and the sway bar end link in order to get it on.Once you've got one side on we're going to angle the other side and then put that side. And then on the other side, we're going to take our sway bar out, grab our sway bar in link, and then just push it on through the hole. We'll again, take our nut and place it on our end link. We'll now prepare our bushings. Take those out of your kit and you'll find some green lubricant as well. We're going to smear the green lubricant on the inside of our pushing all the way around, you want to make sure you get it fully coated on the inside, and then you don't have to, but I like to take a little bit of the excess that you've got left on your finger and just smear a little bit of that on the outside. Just around the area where your clamps going to ride. This can just help minimize some squeaks that could potentially occur. And you don't want to go thick with it, just a very thin layer. Now you get your bushing greased up, you'll spread it apart and slide it over your sway bar. We're doing this pretty close to the end of the sway bar where it pivots and where that small dip bend is there because it's going to line up with the holes in the bottom of our frame. We're going to clamp it right back in the same spot. Now that we've got this bushing greased and on we're going to grease the other bushing and put it in a similar location on the opposite side. We'll now prepare our hardware for installation. This is the factory bolts that we removed from our bushing clamps. We're going to be reusing those bolts again, and all of our bolts are going to get Red Loctite. This comes in our kit. Just smear a little bit on there and go ahead and prepare all the rest of your bolts. Our end links that we push through and thread the nut on there. Just hand tight so it's okay to just stick this behind the nut and then put the Red Loctite there, because then when you tighten it down that's going to work its way into the threads.Slide your bushing clamps onto your new bushings. Making sure that you've got the larger hole towards the front of the vehicle and the smaller hole towards the back. Can then lift your sway bar up into position and thread your hardware in. We're going to do same thing on the opposite side here. Once you got all your hardware started, we can go back and start tightening it out. Now, when you go to tighten on your end links they may want to spin instead of tightening down, there's a flat spot on the opposite side of your flange that you can place a wrench to hold it so you can tighten it down.We can now torque all of our hardware to the specifications found in our instructions with everything all torqued down, our sway bar. Installation's complete. We're now going to head back out onto our test course again with our new sway bar installed. And I can already tell a difference, just even pulling it out of the bay turning over the corner there, it didn't have nearly as much sway as it did when we had before. Now, we're going over our uneven bumps now, and we do still have some sway back and forth.I can feel that it's minimized the amount of sway that we had in comparison with our old one. We're now heading into our slalom course. And before when I was driving it, I almost felt a little uncomfortable at how much it, this way it was when we started turning pretty sharp. Let's get into this one with our new one and I got a lot more confidence hitting our slalom here, back and forth. I don't feel like we're at that tipping point like we we're before on our other sway bar from the factory, I was a little uncomfortable out here on the slalom, but with this new sway bar, it's not a thing at all. We still do have some sway obviously, but not to the point where I feel uncomfortable. And that completes our installation of Roadmaster front anti-sway bar on our 2017 40 series cutaway.

Was an fairly easy install with two people , has held up well so far . Helped stop sway with my top heavy truck camper load. At the time it was the only sway bar that fit the ram 3500 with 6.4 gas hemi due to exhaust system interference with other brands .

Sway bar has held up well since installation.

I installed the front and rear Anti-sway bars with the steering shock.
I am 100% satisfied with the outcome and handling of my RV while driving down the road.
I would highly recommend the installation of these items on any RV

Review from a similar Sway Bar with Bushing Kit in Anti-Sway Bars

I recently purchased a 2011 Itasca Cambria 28 with only 10,500 miles. Our first trip made it clear that I needed to stiffen the chassis. Unfortunately Roadmaster Anti-sway bars are backordered, and though you should put those on first, I just installed the Steering Dampener. Easy installation though you need to be careful about seating the bushings. The videos are much better than the printed instructions. Already see a big difference in how much tighter the steering is. Can't wait for the bars to arrive. Disappointed to have to wait 4 weeks.

Comments
One year later, we have put over 22,000 miles on our rig, and added new tires. The ride is so amazingly better than without the steering stabilizer, and especially the anti sway bars. These additions are absolutely worth the time and money. I would strongly recommend them. You won’t regret it.

Last year I installed the Sumo Springs (lighter load rated) front and rear and rear Koni FSD dampeners which helped noticeably on my 2017 Winnebago View 24J by stabilizing the ride.
I finally installed the Roadmaster rear anti sway bar RM 1209-120 immediately after receiving today. Absolutely worth the low cost for the major improvement in ride comfort and stability. These are direct bolt on replacements for the OEM Mercedes part and utilize the stock mounting bracket hardware.
For a total of less than $xxx I have completely transformed the ride of my Class C motorhome.

Relatively easy installation on my 2004 Ram 3500. It would have been easier if I had removed the spare tire. I only noted a few minor issues. The instructions say to mount the U brackets to the rear two holes in the shock mounts. However, on this truck the shocks mount one in front and one in rear. Therefore, the passenger side mounts in the rear two holes, but the driver side mounts in the front two holes. Otherwise all went well.

Easy installs on my 2004 E-450. The new Roadmaster 1139-115 front sway bar and the Roadmaster 1139-147 rear sway bar greatly improved the handling and cornering of the motorhome. I have aDraw-Tite 65001 front mount receiver mounted and there were no problems when installing the front sway bar.

Comments
It is actually a pleasure to drive! When cornering the motorhome would lean and things would slide around and i even had kitchen drawers open. The problems that i had no longer exist. The cost and the work i did to install were well worth it!

Review from a similar Sway Bar with Bushing Kit in Anti-Sway Bars

The sway bar is high quality compared to the oem bar. I have a 2020 MBZ 2500 Sprinter 144. Basically, the roadmaster is three time the factory bar in terms of weight. And it shows. I took it on a ride down some winding roads and sharp turns and the back end feels much stiffer which equals control. I travel alot on Socal freeways to get to my destinations and it was very unnerving when driving next or passing freight trucks. I also pass through valleys and the winds can really making driving a bit uneasy. So, I anticipate this mod will add to my comfort level as well as my passengers. Time will tell. Now for some thing negative, well not quite but still some information buyers will need to know about installation. My van came with endlinks that were not compatible with the roadmaster. I knew this and order a set of end links for a 2019 model. Be aware that you will need new end links if you want to fit this bar to your 2020 model. At least that was the case for me. See pics. Overall, I'm satisfied and the cost is definitely worth the peace of mind.

Review from a similar Sway Bar with Bushing Kit in Anti-Sway Bars

RM-1139-198 is of high quality. Haven’t tested but have installed. Easy install, I was able to reuse the factory bolt holes on anti-sway bar and frame. Which made it fast and easy. Huge difference in size of RM to factory bars. Only issue I had was I ordered kit number RM-1139-198 to fit my 2018 Ford E-350 and this kit was garrantied to fit. But nothing on this product said ONLY if your E-350 or E-450 has auto drop down tire chains, oops I learned this after I received and started install. Part needed is RM-1139-117 which has 11 inch center to center bolt holes on links instead of the shorter 9 inch. The 9” links are just too short to work. I had to order the longer end links and yes they weren’t free. If you watch the install video on either kit number the tech points this out and with the longer links mine bolted up exactly as the video stated. After testing for awhile I’ll review the product again. This is the only improvement I’ve made so far.

Comments
Been a year now and I will say “it’s the best and first thing you should do to improve the drivability and suspension”. If you motorhome came with stock antisway bars that are small in diameter than the RM then this will make a very big difference in handling on curves and crosswinds, semi trucks.

This is beefy and fits like a glove (OJ'S I BELIEVE). The only thing that made the whole installation a .... nightmare was the complete lack of instructions and/or video with in-depth visuals. This is definitely a 2 person install, if nothing else to hand stackable hardware while you're holding everything in place. Once installed and road tested, I'm a believer, does exactly what it is designed to accomplish. Also, item showed in stock when ordered but still took well over a week to ship with no explanation??

very happy with the product and with Etrailer. Anyone who owns one of these motorhomes realizes it's a step by step process to get it have decent ride characteristics, and adding sway bars and trac bars and steering stabilizers are all part of it in a step by step process. Every little bit helps!

Review from a similar Sway Bar with Bushing Kit in Anti-Sway Bars

The package arrived in a timely manner, just as promised. The installation went as described in the instructions and everything fit well. It improved the handling quite a bit. I already had installed “Sumo Springs” last year (worked great) and the sway bar controlles the sway even more. One thing I can add is, get a long 1/2” drill bit (8” long) to help with drilling the front bracket holes. The drill chuck on my drill, hit the link tabs, causing me to drill at a slight angle (horizontal holes).
The biggest problem I encountered is that the bar contacts the exhaust pipe (1/4” gap) and makes noise when driving (see photos) . I have a diesel and the exhaust pipe is about 3” in diameter, which doesn’t help. I’m trying to figure out how to resolve this issue. I will update when I do.

Comments
When the anti-sway bar is installed, it is in a set position, but because the exhaust uses rubber isolators that suspend it from the exhaust hangers, the actual position of the exhaust pipe can vary a bit. The good news is that the positioning of the exhaust can be modified a little bit by gently bending the exhaust hangers. If that doesnt work, you can go to a muffler shop and have the exhaust hangers relocated fairly inexpensively.

It should be a factory option. It controls the sway like I hoped it would. No issues one year later.

Review from a similar Sway Bar with Bushing Kit in Anti-Sway Bars

I purchased this part because of the rocking on my 2011 Tiifen 34TGA built on the Ford F53 frame. After searching I found this on etrailer and I have to say the video and customer support from etrailer is outstanding. The part came quickly. The install is straight forward as the video shows but be prepared for some hard work. Getting the bolts off the frame after years on the road requires a lot of muscle, my 12 gal compressor and Harbor Freight air wrench was not upto the task. You will need a torque wrench that goes upto the 300 ft/lbs required for the plate install. We had to use our legs to get to 300.
After installing I took a long test drive and the difference in handling is amazing. Much less rocking and more stable. I would recommend this anti-sway bar to anyone with this Ford frame.

Comments
After a year of use the product is still rock solid and keeping my unit from rockin and rollin on the highway and local roads. I still recommend this for your MH on a the Ford F53 chassis.

Review from a similar Sway Bar with Bushing Kit in Anti-Sway Bars

I recently installed front and rear anti sway bars purchased from e trailor on my 2021 chevy express class c. The order was processed and shipped immediately and arrived within a couple of days. They were easy to install, I was able to do it without help. Although I have not been able to test them thoroughly yet so far they seem to cut back on the bouncing and rolling that was occurring with the OEM parts. I plan to purchase upgraded shocks from e trailor as my next update. —joe

Review from a similar Sway Bar with Bushing Kit in Anti-Sway Bars

This part was absolutely the right pick. I researched a lot of anti-sway products and this one came out on top due to its simple installation (thanks to the etrailer video), price and support from etrailer. It went on just like the video showed, though I had to use an impact wrench for the chassis bolts, the etrailer guy who used a wrench must be a beast. Definitely a DIY project even for novice mechanics. I test drove it and it was hands down the biggest improvement in ride even though I had put on new shocks and have air bags. etrailer is my go-to for nearly everything I do to my RV.

Review from a similar Sway Bar with Bushing Kit in Anti-Sway Bars

Excellent product which greatly improved control while loaded with the pickup camper. The challenge here was the shipping. An awkward part to ship which arrived with a destroyed box and missing the inner box of mounting hardware. Called etrailer and was told they would take care of it; then silence. I sent emails and left voice mails without a response until I called back on the main line and spoke to a different rep who let me know it was due to ship out that day. Excellent people who ultimately took care of me even though not their fault though I would recommend more communication to let me know they were taking care of the issue rather than let me guess for two weeks. Overall, etrailer has been excellent to work with and this was my third project with them. I will buy from them again. JB

Review from a similar Sway Bar with Bushing Kit in Anti-Sway Bars

I purchased a Roadmaster antisway bar to replace the stock bar on my 2012 Pleasureway Excel Motorhome which is on a Ford E350 chassis. I did the install myself and instructions were very clear and was not too difficult to do. Handling is much improved, I have noticed less body roll when turning or going over bumps. I have included photos to show the difference between the stock bar diameter and the beefier Roadmaster bar.

etrailer shipped promptly and customer service was great.

Comments
The roadmaster antisway bar is still working great! As a side note, I also had installed professionally the Roadmaster Active Suspension. Between these two products, my motorhome now drives like it’s on rails. Anyone with the same Pleasure Way model should seriously consider both of these products.

Considering the difference in diameter from stock to this upgrade I could feel the difference while driving. Easy to install with one minor obstacle. The factory left drop link bolt was installed between the fuel tank and the link mount which required us to remove the rear fuel tank bracket and pull the tank out far enough to pull the factory bolt out. The new bolt was installed towards the tank. Installed on ‘99 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4.

If you have a C-Class Motorhome you need these. I installed the front and rear sway bars along with the summon springs. I did not feel safe and thought that it was dangerous driving with the stock ford e350. It was night and day difference. I wouldn't have thought of letting my wife drive. Now I would and even crawl up in the bunk and take a nap. etralier had everything I needed and shipped in a timely fashion.

I have a 1994 Airstream B-190 motorhome on a Ford E-350. I saw these sway bars in the catalog for years. I put the back one on 1st it made a world of difference, so I put the front on as well. Should have done this years ago. Don't let the pictures fool you these bars are about as big around as your wrist and very heavy duty. Took a lot of the sway out the top-heavy conservation van. I recommend this sway bar and wish I would have put it on some of my other regular Ford Econoline vans a long time ago

Bottom line - Yes its worth it.
Installed
on 2018 THOR/Axis 25.5

Night and Day driving.
Local shop in Maryland installed for me.
(I had already packed my tools/jacks for moving south).
Their mechanic was impressed with the size over the OEM.

On a related note, got the rear set up as well.
Sumo Springs intalled as well.

Comments
Still great and ditto from my front revew - this should be a required OEM item. Now to update the shocks.

Awesome! Our E-350 camper van drove like a boat. The anti-sway bars made all the difference in the world. No more white knuckle grip on the steering wheel. Now I'm cruising down the freeway with a cup of coffee in one hand. Thanks etrailer!

  • Replacement Bushings for Roaadmaster Anti-Sway Bar on 2016 Ford F-450
The Roadmaster Front Anti-Sway Bar # RM-1139-189 you referenced only comes as a complete kit. We don't have the bushings or bar available separately. This is the fit for the 2016 Ford E-450 but not the same year F-450 you have in the question fit guide. For the F-450, you would instead use Roadmaster Front Anti-Sway Bar # RM-1139-179. This is a 1-1/2 inch bar and is confirmed to fit.
