Roadmaster Anti-Sway Bar Installed

Benefits of an Anti-Sway System

The Roadmaster anti-sway bar does for side-to-side movement what a good pair of shocks does for up-and-down motion. You will notice a marked improvement in your vehicle's stability as the bar works to balance weight transfer and reduce body roll. The anti-sway bar acts as a link between your vehicle's frame and its rear axle, using the axle as a brace to more effectively balance the shifting weight of your vehicle as you maneuver it. Lubricated bushings allow just enough pivot and rotation to compensate for the pressure placed on one side of your vehicle when it goes into sudden maneuvers, hits crosswinds or encounters shifting weights.

Roadmaster Anti-Sway Polyurethane Bushings

Superior Construction

The Roadmaster anti-sway bar is made of 4140 chromoly, a chromium and molybdenum steel alloy. This type of steel is considerably harder and stronger than the standard 1020 steel that is typically used in anti-sway applications. In addition, the larger diameter of the bar increases its torsional roll stiffness. The result is a bar that is not only stronger than the competition, but also nearly 30 percent better at resisting sway. The polyurethane bushings and grommets used at the attachment points are durable yet flexible, ensuring that the system is neither so rigid nor so malleable that it becomes ineffective.

Video Transcript for Roadmaster Rear Anti-Sway Bar Installation - 2017 Coachmen Pursuit Motorhome

Speaker 1: Today on our 2017 Coachman Pursuit on the Ford F-53 chassis we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the Roadmaster rear anti-sway bar. Part number is RM-1139-146.Now here's what our sway bar's going to look like installed. Now the need for a sway bar comes from motor homes just like what we've got here. They have higher centers of gravity, so as we're traveling down the road we get a crosswind that wants to tip the top of our RV side to side. Uneven pavement, ruts in the road, there's several symptoms like you're passing semis that start that sway in your coach. With our upgraded sway bar in place, we get a connection point from our axle right here up to the frame.

That happens on both sides, here on the passenger side and also on the driver side. Now the way the sway bar helps to control that by having those two connection points, let's say your RV sways towards the driver side. As it sways, it pushes down on this side of the sway bar. When that happens and this side of our sway bar gets pushed down, that transfers that energy all the way through the bar and will pull down on our passenger side. Again, that's helping to control that sway.

As one side goes down, it wants to pull the other side down with it.Now the sway bar's designed to work with all of our factory equipment. You can see here's the factory sway bar. This is 1-3/8". With the Roadmaster sway bar, we're going up to 1-1/2". We're getting significantly more size.

But the material construction is much different. We've got a 1020 standard steel for our factory sway bar. We're going to have a 4140 chromoly on our aftermarket, our Roadmaster sway bar. Chromoly is a stiffer, harder material so it's not going to flex as much. Also, our bushings have been upgraded.

The factory bushings are rubber, which tend to be pretty malleable and will, over time, crack. Upgrading to a polyurethane bushing, it's still a soft material but it's not so malleable that our sway bar is going to be ineffective, and it's not so rigid that it's going to reduce our ride quality. Now the polyurethane is also much more resistant to the hazards we find on the road, whether it's salts, oils, gasses, and it's designed not to deform. Over time, the hole in a rubber bushing will elongate. The polyurethane's going to help to reduce that. Now that we know how it works, let's head out to the test course and we'll see it in action. Let's start without the sway bar installed. You can see we've made a straight line on top of our axle and then a rounded mark on the back of our jounce bumper. That's going to give you a really good idea of the movement between the frame and our axle. Before our sway bar is installed, as we do our slalom or side to side movement you'll see how that comes together, and separates, comes together, and separates. As we do our wider, sweeping corner, you can see how we get a lot of lean from the RV that just is held there in that position. On the solid bumps you're not going to notice a big difference, but there is a slight tighter feel as we go over them. On our alternating bumps we should see a much bigger difference. As our wheel falls off of that bump, it's going to draw down the other side, helping to keep everything level and keeping that sway to a minimum. Now to begin our installation, we've got a crossmember here. These are our rear wheels. You'll see four bolts that hold that crossmember in, four here on the passenger side, four on the driver, we need to remove both lower bolts we have. You may need to allow your axle to hang slightly to allow the top of your leaf spring to come down and clear. Once those are clear, we'll use a 21mm socket and get those removed. We'll pull those bolts out. On the backside you're going to have nuts that have keepers on them. You want to hang on to these. We want to reuse those. One of our end link mounting brackets. Our bolts are going to go right through those holes, and that's how we're going to secure this to our frame. We want to lift it up, align it with our holes, place our bolts through. Then we can get our nuts started on the backside of each one. We'll want to secure those down, then torque them to specification. Now let's head over to the driver side and we'll do the same thing there. Now we'll get our bushings placed onto the sway bar itself. There's going to be some grease that comes with it. You'll want to use that to fully coat the inside of the bushing. If moisture happens to get in between this style bushing and the steel, it can cause squeaking, so it's important you get a good coat inside. You'll notice the bushing has a split in it so you'll be able to separate that out and slide it around the sway bar. Now our clamps will slide right around our bushings. Now with the bushings on our sway bar, we're ready to remove the bolts in the lower shock eye. It's going to be right here. Use an 1-1/8" socket and wrench. Just let those rest down out of the way for now. Now we'll do the same thing for the driver side.now here on the back of our shock mount you'll see the two holes we'll be mounting our saddle bracket to. For the upper hole we'll use our hex hold bolt with a flat washer on it. For the lower hole we're going to need to use the button head bolt. You can see that washer's flat spot. That should face downward. We'll do that on our driver side as well. Now with the help of an extra set of hands we're going to get our sway bar lifted up. We'll guide those saddle brackets right onto the bolt. Then we're going to place on a flat washer on the upper with the lock nut. Then we can do the same thing for the bottom. We just want to be sure to use the flat spotted washer. Now we're going to use a 7/32 hex bit and a 9/16" wrench. We're going to tighten both of our lower bolts. Then we'll use a 9/16" socket and wrench for our upper bolts. Once we have them snug, we want to torque them to the specifications listed in our instructions. Now you're going to compress your shock back in and slide your bolt back in. You'll want one flat washer here on the inside, another one on the outside, as well as your lock nut. Now we'll get these tightened down and torqued. Now we'll get our end link shackle put in place. You can see the wide end's going to fit right around the end of our sway bar. You'll have a little bit of that lubricant left over. I like to go ahead, just place them in there. Ain't going to hurt anything. Place our bolt through, put our nylon lock nut on the other side, do the same thing over on the passenger. Now we can apply a little bit of our lubricant to our bushings here on the end link. We'll secure it to the end link bracket the same way we did to our sway bar. Now just to make sure you have plenty of clearance, we're going to install this bolt with the head this way so it'll be nice and tucked in close. Going to do that on the passenger side as well. Now we're going to tighten down all four of our bolts supporting our sway bar. You just want to ensure you don't overtighten them. Just get them down snug, then use your torque wrench to finish them off. Now with everything torqued down properly, that's going to complete our installation of the Roadmaster rear anti-sway bar, part number RM-1139-146, on our 2017 Coachman Pursuit on the Ford F-53 chassis.

We received the product earlier than expected, which was a good thing. After watching the videos on how to install the rear sway bar and front steering stabilizer i'm ready to make this easy install (according to the videos). Now I'm not a gearhead or mechanic but I know my way around tools. The first problem I encountered with both products, which the videos just skim over, is taking out the existing nuts and bolts that are rusted together. This task requires an impact tool connected to a 50 gallon air compressor that will supply a constant 90 psi at the tool. The bottom installation line is, if you're not already geared for this type of work, send it out. The product should have 5 stars but because of the missing info in the instructions I give it a 3. 569765

Holy Buckets, what a great operations to deal with. I ordered two separate parts for my RV. One of them was the wrong fit. I can not honestly say I was not part of the issue, not sure. But it did not matter who messed up." etrailer" stepped up to the plate for a grand slam. Sent me a return label for an expensive freight bil immediatelyl, and had me the replacement part in 24 hours. Never in my 72 years of being a driveway mechanic have I received such courteous and full filling service.. 5 STARS???? Hell no, 10 STARS all the way. Thank you etrailer and your entire staff. 634903

I purchase a sway bar a year ago and install them on a Thor class RA RV, let me tell you. I drove to Floria from El Paso TX and I have no idea why the manufacturer doesn't install them to start with. It improved my ride by 100%. Thanks to the experts at etrailer for the recommendations. 614528

We were wanting to improve steering and ride on our 2013 Itasca Sunstar Motorhome. Crystal at Etrailer.com work with me to select the correct parts to upgrade the front sway bar, add a rear sway bar, add a steering stabilizer and Sumo Springs. McGee Commercial Tire & Service in Fort Myers, FL installed all the parts with a little over 9 hours of labor. Test driving the changes in a brisk cross wind showed us a much better ride, a more sold feel to the rig and better steering. All the parts arrive in a couple days and all were the correct parts for our unit. McGee did a very professional job of installation and I could not be happier. 590518

I have a 30 ft class A Thor Hurricane. It bounced everytime I drove over a hump in the road. Very difficult to handle especially when going around a turn while bouncing. The sway bar completely got rid of the bounce! Everyone I know who drives a large motorhome swears by the sway bar. I dont understand why they dont come standard installed?? When spending 100 grand on a coach, slap on another grand and make the thing drivable! This is a must have! I highly recommend this product! 586166

Review from a similar Roadmaster Sway Bar with Bushing Kit in Anti-Sway Bars

I purchased this part because of the rocking on my 2011 Tiifen 34TGA built on the Ford F53 frame. After searching I found this on etrailer and I have to say the video and customer support from etrailer is outstanding. The part came quickly. The install is straight forward as the video shows but be prepared for some hard work. Getting the bolts off the frame after years on the road requires a lot of muscle, my 12 gal compressor and Harbor Freight air wrench was not upto the task. You will need a torque wrench that goes upto the 300 ft/lbs required for the plate install. We had to use our legs to get to 300. After installing I took a long test drive and the difference in handling is amazing. Much less rocking and more stable. I would recommend this anti-sway bar to anyone with this Ford frame. 509803

Comments

After a year of use the product is still rock solid and keeping my unit from rockin and rollin on the highway and local roads. I still recommend this for your MH on a the Ford F53 chassis.

Review from a similar Roadmaster Sway Bar with Bushing Kit in Anti-Sway Bars

The package arrived in a timely manner, just as promised. The installation went as described in the instructions and everything fit well. It improved the handling quite a bit. I already had installed “Sumo Springs” last year (worked great) and the sway bar controlles the sway even more. One thing I can add is, get a long 1/2” drill bit (8” long) to help with drilling the front bracket holes. The drill chuck on my drill, hit the link tabs, causing me to drill at a slight angle (horizontal holes). The biggest problem I encountered is that the bar contacts the exhaust pipe (1/4” gap) and makes noise when driving (see photos) . I have a diesel and the exhaust pipe is about 3” in diameter, which doesn’t help. I’m trying to figure out how to resolve this issue. I will update when I do. 508714

Comments

When the anti-sway bar is installed, it is in a set position, but because the exhaust uses rubber isolators that suspend it from the exhaust hangers, the actual position of the exhaust pipe can vary a bit. The good news is that the positioning of the exhaust can be modified a little bit by gently bending the exhaust hangers. If that doesnt work, you can go to a muffler shop and have the exhaust hangers relocated fairly inexpensively.

It should be a factory option. It controls the sway like I hoped it would. No issues one year later.

After installing this front and rear sway bar my RV, it handled much better when in windy conditions and being passed by large trucks. The front sway bar install was very easy. The rear sway bar was much tougher and ultimately I had to have Camping World install that one. It took them about an hour and half to install just the rear sway bar. This was installed on a 2014 Chevy express 4500 frame. 336983

Review from a similar Roadmaster Sway Bar with Bushing Kit in Anti-Sway Bars

I purchased this kit and the Roadmaster rear anti-sway bar kit for installation on my 2015 Fleetwood Flair, 26-foot. Before purchasing, I called Roadmaster to make sure this kit could be installed on my small RV, as they make smaller kits for smaller RVs. They indicated it could be installed, and I'm glad I went with the heavier kit. The install took maybe an hour, with the only glitch being some difficulty getting the poly bushings and brackets over the new bar. I called Roadmaster, and the tech noted that the brackets DID look to small, but with some jiggling and finesse, the bolts should fit, and they did. My only irritation with this, and the rear anti-sway bar kit, is that the Roadmaster instructions do not provide ANY torque specifications for bolts to be replaced, either Ford F53, or kit specific, so be prepared to make some calls or go on an Internet search to find the right torque specs. 224319

After purchasing a 2017 Winnebago Sunova 36 Z, I realized there were several handling issues that needed to be dealt with to make the drive more comfortable. I researched and then asked the experts at etrailer to narrow down part numbers appropriate to my F53 chassis. With their guidance, I purchased "sumo- springs" front and rear, a "Roadmaster" steering stabilizer, and finally the "Roadmaster" rear sway bar. The addition of these parts has made the coach far more comfortable to drive. Not only does e trailer provide great assistance ordering coach-specific parts, but they provide awesome installation videos that are a great help. Thanks etrailer!! 522622

I thank Cathy T great help she gave me. I installed the front and back anti sway bars on my 2016 George Town Motorhome. It has the ford f-53 chassis and a Dana 150 rear end. I use road master RM-1139-145 on the rear and RM-1139-140 on the front. Thanks to Cathy T she set me up with the right parts. I don't have any more body roll and the 18 wheelers bearly push me over now. If not at all. The front bar also cut down on wheel pounding. I have a much smother ride. I also have the road master reflex steering stabilizer Rm-BK9-RSSA. 293767

Great customer service from purchase to delivery. Kept informed all the way by George with fast shipping. Sway bar was quick and easy to install on my 2018 Windsport, about 1 1/2 hours by myself. Considerably heavier than original, helps reduce sway as advertised. Great experience with company would purchase other items in future. 483047

Winnebago vista 08. I believe this improvement was the least productive in improving my ford F53 chassis. My existing bar was already or close to the new bar diameter. The install was quick. Delivery was quick. Pricing was ok but they exceeded in having all three items for my rig. 406453

Review from a similar Roadmaster Sway Bar with Bushing Kit in Anti-Sway Bars

While not the transcendent experience some of the other users had, this did make a noticeable difference. My star rating represents a product doing exactly what it was supposed / advertised to do. I was told the rear anti sway-bar would eliminate 65% of the movement. And that is an accurate description of the improvement. It was most noticeable on uneven roads and highway ramps. When the coach would have rolled 3-4 times, it's now 1 time. And, on long sustained curves the degree of roll is less. I paid to have it installed. After looking at it installed, it would have been easy to do on my own. I recommend the anti sway-bar for anyone looking to reduce body roll. 443092

Review from a similar Roadmaster Sway Bar with Bushing Kit in Anti-Sway Bars

2017 E-450 Class C RV. I just received the road master front anti-sway bar: RM-1139-176, rear anti-sway bar:RM-1139-147and steering stabilizer: RM-RBK24-RSSC . I unboxed everything and Wow! what a difference compared to the other items. My son and I decided to go ahead and install the steering stabilizer- RM-RBK24-RSSC and it took us right at an hour. we would stop and watch the e-trailer video to make sure we were doing a proper assembly. It is a very helpful tutorial. The only concern I have is how close the tie-rod end of the steering stabilizer is to the radiator hose. It looks like it could come in contact. What we are going to try is to get a old radiator hose and cut a section out of it and wrap around the area where the contact could occur. I will post an update when we get the sway bars installed 346938

I received my order, but all the parts wasn't with it. All I got was the bar and the two bushing and brackets that mounts the bushing to the frame. All this came in one long box. According to the picture there are suppose to be more parts. I thought this is an expensive part for no more than I got with it. $ 600.00 for a bar really!! 211264

Review from a similar Roadmaster Sway Bar with Bushing Kit in Anti-Sway Bars

Good anti-sway bar. Installation was made difficult by being unable to easily remove the OEM anti-sway bar. Although this item was intended to go on a near-new 2015 motorhome, the original retaining bolts were very difficult to remove. However, installation of the RM 1139-140 was relatively easy and completed in about an hour by one person. If two people did the task, it could be done in half that time. The only disappointment, and it was significant, is that there was no mention of torque values for the mounting bolts. 223089

Comments

After a year of use over about 8,000 miles, I have to say the improvement they made are moderate at best even considering I put them on the front and back.

Installed easily in about 30 minutes. I took it for a test drive in a 35mph crosswind and it seemed to handle great but I am anxious to take it on the freeway. My only suggestion is that Etrailer list measurements with the product description because the front sway bar that my motorhome called for didn't fit and I had to return it and get a different one. 359473

  • Recommended Components To Improve Handling of 2017 F53 Chassis Motorhome with GVWR of 18,000
  • The best way to adjust handling on your 2017 Ford F53 18K chassis is to start with anti-sway bars. For your Ford F-53 chassis with an 18,000 lb GVWR you want part # SSF-170-40-2 for the front axle and part # SSR-184-40-1 for the rear axle.
