Video Transcript for Firestone Air Command F3 Compressor System Installation - 2018 GMC Sierra 1500

Speaker 1: Today on our 2018 GMC Sierra 1500, we're gonna be installing Firestone's Air Command F3 Compressor System, part number F2589.So, if you're out working where there's no air compressor, you load up the back of your vehicle and you wanna air it up, but you can't Well, now you can, because this system has a compressor built in, and it's gonna air it right up to your desired level using the wireless remote. When running around town unloaded, you're gonna want it set to five Psi for both your airbags. When you've got a load on it, you're gonna wanna adjust that to accommodate that load. And if you have something that you typically haul like let's say a trailer, you can save memory settings. So we've got memory one set to our unloaded position, and memory two we have set so we can adjust for that trailer we're gonna hook up. And you can see on the remote as the pressure increases in both your left and right airbag. After it airs it up, you usually go slightly higher than what you're desired pressure is, and then slowly brings that back down. Then it settles of at your desired pressure and you're good to go.

And unlike many compressor systems that tie into both your left and right airbag with a single output port, this one has individual left and right controls, so this way you can adjust for uneven loads on the fly. What else is nice about this system compared to others is that you don't have to install any gauges or any components on the inside of the vehicle. Everything's hidden on the outside and you have full control and visibility of the pressures in your airbags through the wireless remote, which can be easily tucked away in your glove box or center console. In addition to being able to control the left and right individually, you can also set this up for a four airbag system. So if you've got airbags in the front and airbags in the rear, you could set one of the outputs for your front airbags and the other output for your rear airbags. You'd simple just wire in that appropriate line to your front and wire in the other appropriate line to the rear. This system can be used with up to a one gallon air tank. This is an additional accessory that can be installed.

What's nice about having an air tank is that you have pressure on board so if you make adjustments it can adjust those more quickly because it doesn't need to pump up that pressure. Additionally, you can tap into that air tank if you need to use some minor air tools. This system has a maximum pressure of 130 PSI. You do wanna make sure though that you're not exceeding the capacities of your airbags. And as you can see here, all of our components can be easily stored ina convenient location outside the vehicle. On our Sierra here, we we're able to install right where our secondary battery location would be.

We've got our operating unit, and this has your left and right output ports as well as the input port from your air compressor, and an exhaust port that allows it to lower the air pressure in your air bags. Your air compressor here comes with a filter. This filter prevents any dirt and debris from entering the compressor, making sure it has a long-lasting life. The system comes with a pre-assembled harness which just makes the installation extremely easy. It's fuse protected, and it's tapped into our ignition circuit so the systems only operational when the ignition is in the run position. What's nice about this is if it was powered all the time, it could drain down your battery, especially if you had a small leak in your system. Now that we've gone over the components and features, lets show you how to get it installed.

We'll start our install under the hood on the driver's side. Here, we're gonna mount our main components. This includes your compressor, your operating unit, and your relay.I've already got all of these mounted. We mounted our operating unit with the hardware provided in the kit. You just wanna drill out some holes here with a 1/4" drill bit. We used the self-tapping screw provided in the kit to mount our relay. Behind our relay you'll see the ground wire for our compressor. So just slide that ring terminal on there when you use the self-tapping screw to mount your relay. And for our compressor, we mounted that to the open battery box here on our driver's side. Now, to make it easier to mount your compressor, I did remove the tray. There's about eight bolts you'll have to remove using a 10mm socket. That tray will come out, that way you can drill your holes, mount your compressor to it, and then just reinstall it. Since you have to put your hardware through one side and put it on the other, it's difficult while it's installed. When you're mounting it in the battery tray, orientation is important. You wanna make sure that your output nozzle is gonna be accessible once it's installed, so I placed one end between the two bolts here towards the passenger side. I kind of turned it a little bit so that way its angled slightly towards the front on this angle, so that way it won't contact our operating unit.We can now plug in our wiring. The large plug with the red plastic covering is gonna go to our operating unit. We're just gonna slide that in. The other large plug that has four terminals with the blue weather packing is gonna go to our relay. And the small spade terminal that's coming off of that is gonna go to our compressor. We still have three more electrical connections to make. You'll have two ring terminals, they're gonna go to your battery, and a yellow wire that needs to go to a fuse tap in your fusebox for ignition power. We're gonna start by running our wiring over to our battery. We'll need to remove the covering so we can access the top of our battery. There are two hooks on each side and then you just pull your covering off. We'll remove one of the nuts, it really doesn't matter which one, we're gonna chose the one closest to our positive stud that comes up there. We'll use a 13mm socket. We'll slide our battery positive terminal on that stud and we'll reinstall the nut. Now, we'll hook up our ground wire. We're just gonna hook that directly to our battery negative post. We'll use a 10mm socket to remove the nut. Go ahead and take our ground wire. You know it's the ground because it's black. We're gonna slide it on our negative battery post stud and we'll reinstall the nut. Then we'll tighten it down back down with 10mm socket. You can then reinstall your cover, which I would recommend you do first. We left it off so you could see it on camera, but I would recommend doing this before you put your negative post on it. And now, we'll just tidy up our wiring. We'll run some zip ties. We followed our factory wiring across the engine over toward the rest of where our wiring is. We attached them using the zip ties that come included with the kit. We'll now need to access our fuses here under the hood. There's two tabs here that you'll pull away from the cover. Lift up and that'll allow you to remove it. We'll be tapping into the fuse in this location. This 10 amp fuse is for miscellaneous ignition components, and it only has power when in the run position. So we'll remove this fuse and install our tap on it.This is the fuse tap that comes with the kit, however you can see that this will not work with this fuse as it has different spacing. So we'll be using one of the small fuse taps that slides on these mini fuses. You can source these at your local electronics store. You'll take the tap, slide the open end over one of the legs on the fuse, and we're just gonna push that in place. We'll now reinstall our fuse, and we're going to make sure that the fuse tap tab is faced towards the engine side, as that is our cold side, so that way it'll be protected by the fuse that we've tapped into. We'll just reinsert it back down in there. And then crimp on a small female spade terminal. You'll also need to source this from your local electronics store. We're gonna crimp it onto the yellow wire from our harness. And then, we'll slide it onto the spade terminal that we tapped into there. Now just kind of fold this wiring over. We will have to make some small modifications to our fusebox to make room for our wiring. We're just using a pair of side cutters to do this. Then we'll also need to notch out a spot in our lid. We can then reinstall our cover. And now, we can wrap up all of our excess wiring and use the zip ties that are provided in the kit to just tidy everything up and make it look neat.We can now begin running our air lines. In order to hook an air line to our compressor, we'll need to install the quick connect fitting that'll thread into the spout here at the top of the compressor. Then you'll wanna tighten it down with an 1/2" wrench. You wanna make sure you've got at least two or three threads that we're coated in the sealant all the way into your fitting. We'll now need to run some air hose from our airbags up to our operating unit here. So I'm gonna go ahead and route that now, and then I'll show you how. Make sure when you're routing it that you avoid any excessively hot objects such as your exhaust or any moving components such as your steering or suspension. We'll start at our airbag by plugging our hose into it. Wanna push it in pull it up and down just to make sure it's fully seated, and we're gonna do that with both sides. So we took both our hoses, we routed them up over the frame right at the back corner of our fuel tank. Then on the outside of our frame, we followed it all of the way forward. And you can see, we popped that over the frame. We're following our factory wiring just down the side of the frame, zip tying it as we go. All the way up, and we even followed the factory wiring right up into our engine compartment. Now if you're installing compressor at the same time as you're installing your air bags on your vehicle, you'll have enough hose between both the kits to make the runs that you need. However if you've already had your airbags installed and you're installing your compressor later, you may need some additional airline. You can pick some up here at etrailer.com with part number F9008.And you can see there where our hose follows our factory wiring up into our engine compartment here. We'll now take this hose, and we're gonna run it up to our operating unit, trim it the the appropriate lengths to allow us to reach our unit. I always like to leave a little bit of excess. And we're gonna cut it with our cutters here. You can pick up a set up these cutters here at etrailer.com.We'll now need to plug our air lien hose into the appropriate ports on our control unit here. We're gonna plug our left side into air supply one. If you have it mounted in this orientation, that's gonna be our lowest port. And these are the same quick connect style fittings as in the back, so just push them in place, give them a little tug, and make sure they're all the way in. We'll then plug the passenger side of the vehicle, the right side, into the air supply two port, which is going to be the top hose here. We'll now need to run a piece of air line form our compressor to our operating unit. We're gonna make it a little extra long so we can put a loop in it, and that'll help prevent moisture from entering our compressor. We'll plug one end of our air line into the quick connect fitting at the top of the compressor. We'll make a loop with our air hose, and we're gonna plug the other side into the supply port. That's gonna be the one towards the outside of the vehicle over here. This is your exhaust, this is your supply, so we're gonna plug into the supply. There are labels on the front of your operating unit in case you didn't mount it intelligent same orientation that we have here. Now, we can just zip tie up our excess hose. Now, we'll need to make a mounting location for our air filter. You can use a 3/8ths drill bit. You can see there that kind of matches up the make a hole for this to plug right into, and that'll hold it in place. We're gonna mount ours right here next to our operating unit. So, we're just gonna take that 3/8ths drill bit and just drill out a hole. After you've finished drilling your hole, you can take a little clear coat. This'll just prevent any corrodent from occurring. Now, we'll take the barbed fitting and we're gonna thread it onto our air filter. You won't need any tools for this. You should be able to get it just hand tight and that should seal fine. The plastic will seal within the threads in there. We'll then with, again, measure out a piece of hose that's gonna go from our compressor to our filter. Once you've got that length measured out, go ahead and cut it to size. We'll slide one end of the hose onto our compressor. It is a good idea to use a little bit of silicon lubricant or soapy water just to make it easier to get this to slide onto the barbed fitting. Just kind of work it on there. You wanna make sure you've got at least two barbed in.And our other end, we're gonna press into our filter here. Be careful when pressing it into your filter because you don't wanna break the plastic. Again, you only need to get two barbs in as well, so this is plenty far. Then, take your filter and just press it into the hole that we drilled out. And that'll hold it in place. And now, this is an optional step, but you can make a short section of hose up to 16 inches maximum and plug it into the exhaust port, that's the last one we didn't plug anything into. You don't have to plug anything in there, but this can help keep moisture from entering in that hole and also help reduce the noise that it makes. So, we're just gonna plug that in. You wanna make sure that this hose is aiming downward after you plug it in. So we're gonna just plug this short piece of hose in there. We're then gonna just route it right down through this hole here in the fender. And that'll just give us a little bit further protection. We can now turn our ignition on and then adjust the pressures in our unit. We're gonna set them both just to five PSI for right now. We can now increase the pressure and verify if there's any leaks. With it all aired up, you're gonna wanna spray each connection point and verify that there's no leaks. We're just using some soapy water and looking for the presence of bubbles. And that completes our installation of Firestone's Air Command F3 Compressor System on our 2018 GMC Sierra 1500.

Review from a similar Firestone Air Command II in Air Suspension Compressor Kit

Had this installed on our GMC dually for maintaining air pressure in the Firestone air bags and having an outside air port for inflating all of our tires and also our Hobie inflatable kayaks. Works very well considering all the demands of the compressor and tank to keep everything inflated. 629477

Review from a similar Firestone Air Command II in Air Suspension Compressor Kit

The compressor kit was fairly easy to install. Finding locations for the compressor and filter was the biggest challenge. I own a 14 Ram 3500. I had Schrader valves in the back bumper initially. It is so much more convenient being able to hit the toggle switch in the cab. Thanks e-trailer. 607609

where is the best place ton install 2158 firestone compressor on 2010 f-150. can it be installed in the cab or should it be mounted outside

It can be installed in the cab, but it can get rather noisy when operating if in the cab. Mounting options are pretty endless, you do want to make sure its not in direct line to have road debris or water thrown on it. I have added a link to an install with a 2011 Sierra to give you some ideas.

I actually installed the compressor inside my console. I also installed the control panel where the factory brake controller would normally go. It is a little noisy but not running it long enough to be worried with that. I also used the factory fuse panel to as the point of power. I would not mind sharing pictures if some one could tell me how.

Installed this kit on a 2015 Nissan Frontier. Biggest issue was finding a space for the compressor. Ended up mounting it behind the left headlight, on an aluminum plate that I mounted above the fender sheet metal. The kit itself is very complete and includes everything required for a clean installation. I did 15 loads of firewood with that truck last year, and it was great to be able to inflate the airbags when loaded, and then reduce the pressure once the truck was unloaded. 364805

Review from a similar Firestone Air Command II in Air Suspension Compressor Kit

I have nothing but great things to say about Etrailer.com! I ordered the Firestone rear helper bags along with the Level Command II for my 2012 Silverado 1500, selected ground shipping and the next day, I was notified that my shipping was upgraded at no charge! I installed it all in my garage in about 3 hours. The only hangup I had was the fuse tap but I got one from my local auto parts store for 6 bucks. I also installed a tee fitting off of the main airline to the bags and installed a manual fill valve inside my rear fender well for back up. I also did not have a tubing cutter but a sharp razor blade does just as well as long as you get your cuts square. I ordered this kit for towing my 29 foot travel trailer. My truck has the stock suspension other than a 2 inch drop shackle in the rear to level the truck out. I am running the minimum amount of pressure, which is 10psi, and the back end is a little stiff but not uncomfortable. 102541

I have a 2015 F150 eco boost 3.5l engine and pull a 28' travel trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Without the air suspension, the trailer is at the upper end of what the truck can handle in wind. The engine is fine, but the truck is light for a big trailer like that. The air suspension stabilizes the truck making for a nice stable pull. I recommend these for anyone pulling a trailer with a light truck. 503426

Review from a similar Firestone Air Command II in Air Suspension Compressor Kit

Great kit, compressor is a little noisy but to be expected given its range and duty cycle. Wireless range isn't that far, but works where you need it. If you're installing in a late model F250/350 buy the no drill mounting kit because you cannot through bolt since the frame rails are fully boxed. Worth the extra $! I use the tank to fill air bags, tires with the included inflation stuff, a spray nozzle to clean out the truck, and a set of quad train horns. It all works fantastically. You can set max/min tank pressure to avoid excessive compressor use, and there's presets for airbag pressure which is nice. Wiring harness is well put together and sealed, was plenty long enough to install on my 176" wheelbase F350 and configured to the upfitter switches. 651169
