Colin: Hey everyone. It's Colin here at etrailer, and we're going to take a look at an accessory for the Yakima LockNLoad Platform rack. This is their spare tire carrier. This carrier mounts to the T-Slots in your Yakima LockNLoad Platform rack and it's going to allow you to get up to a 42 inch tall tire on a 17 inch rim secured on your Platform rack. It's going to use three straps that connect to a 3-Way strap up top. We have these eye bolts that are secured into our T-Tracks.
There's going to be our Tie-Down Points you can see our rubber coated hook comes through it, then our strap is up on top of our wheel. And you can see how it comes up and connects to our 3-Way strap right here. Two of them are going to have cam buckles and the last one is going to have a ratchet strap. So once you get the two cam buckle secured, then you can start tightening down your ratchet strap. This is going to help you get the tension really good on your spare tire to make sure it doesn't go anywhere. Now, obviously this tire is not a spare tire for this vehicle, but we just wanted to throw something up there to show you guys how big of a tire it can hold.
And right now this one is still a little bit smaller than what its capacity is, where this one is about 36 inches tall on a 15 inch wheel. Whereas like I said, it can fit up to a 42 inch tall tire with a 17 inch wheel. Now we have our wheel in the center of our Platform rack right now, if you're not traveling with anything else on top, it's going to be the best place for it, where it can be supported the best, but it can still be shifted around to whatever corner or side of the rack you need it on for maximum spacing. The eye bolts do have a really nice steel construction that can be very durable, Nato Black zinc coating as well, so it's going to help resist rust and corrosion. It does have a 100 pound weight capacity, that's what the straps are weighted to support, but always double check with your vehicle's owner's manual. Make sure your rooftop can handle that weight and always take into account everything else that you have loaded up there. And it's very easy to unload, get our straps off and get our excess off.
All we have to do is pull up on the ratchet strap rack just like every other rest strap and we'll push it down, loosen it up and we'll just get our hooks off, (silence) and then we can unload our spare tire. And once you get your spare tire on top of your Platform rack, you've got it in the spot you want, go ahead and get our three eye bolts installed. These are going to have two washes right here, so as a little plate. So this one I'm going to put up front, someone reach around, put it in this T-Slot up here, (silence)Once we get it in that spot, we'll go ahead and tighten it down. This one's going to go in that slot and then push towards the center right behind the tire and then tighten it down just like the other one.
Then the third one, I'm going to put back up front and bring it over more towards the side and tighten it down. Now we have our 3-Way strap right here, we're going to take the side of the two cam buckles and put them towards the front. Easiest way to do is probably going to be just go ahead and take your rubber coated hook and put it into the eye bolt right there, keeps intention on it and feed it through the cam buckle. No need to tighten anything down right now. We'll just get some tension on there.Just like that, now we'll go to the other front eye bolt and do the same thing. Now we need a little bit of slack so we can get our ratchet strap up more, so it is going to let a little bit out on each side. There we go. And now we'll take our third strap and get it through our ratchet strap. It's going to come up and then back through. Pull on it. Get the hook into the eye bolt. Take tension out from here. Just go ahead, tighten it down (silence) and then tie up all your excess strap. Now with all your straps secured and your tire cinched down, you're going to be ready to hit the road. (silence).
