Yakima BackSwing Demonstration Swing Away Hitch Extender

The Yakima BackSwing converts your existing 2" bike rack into a swing-away rack, giving you complete access to your hatch or tailgate area. This swing-away hitch extender is also compatible with other 2" hitch accessories, like cargo carriers and grills. The BackSwing installs in your 2" hitch with the included anti-rattle hitch pin, and a SKS hitch lock deters theft of the extender.

Swing-Away Design for Full Access to Rear Cargo Area

Yakima BackSwing Ford F-150 with 4 Bike Rack Demonstration

The BackSwing features a hinged arm that lets you swing the rack, or accessory, 90 degrees away from the rear of your vehicle. This provides maximum access to your vehicle's rear cargo area and eliminates the need to unload or remove the accessory when you're unloading cargo or letting your dog hop in or out of the back.

Yakima BackSwing Works with Jeep with Spare Tire Full Access

Because the BackSwing also works as a hitch extender, it's perfect for vehicles with a rear-mounted spare tire.

Yakima BackSwing Lever Safety Latch Demonstration Swinging Open

To open the hinged arm, simply disengage the release lever, pull the spring pin, and swing the rack away from the rear of your vehicle. The BackSwing will easily rotate outward to provide an additional separation from the rear of the vehicle. The arm will lock into place once it's fully extended at 90 degrees, so your hands are free to open your hatch and remove cargo.

Yakima BackSwing Lever Safety Latch Demonstration Swinging Close

To close the BackSwing, just pull the release lever at the end of the adapter and swing the extended arm back into position. Once you hear the spring pin lock into place, put the safety latch back into position, and you're ready to go.

Compatible with Most 2" Hitch Accessories

Yakima BackSwing Swing Away Hitch with Bike Rack

This versatile hitch extender will work with most bike racks or hitch accessories with a 2" shank. It works with both platform and hanging bike racks, and it can support up to 4 bikes on either syle of rack. The BackSwing has a weight capacity of 250 lbs, not including the weight of the bike rack or bikes, so keep in mind the weight of your rack when deciding how many bikes can be safely loaded for your application.

Yakima BackSwing Swing Away Hitch Extender with Cargo Carrier

The BackSwing also works with hitch-mounted cargo carriers to provide expanded storage without limiting access to your vehicle's hatch or tailgate area. You can even pair it with a hitch-mounted grill, allowing you to pivot the grill out away from the vehicle, while retaining full access to coolers and supplies while grilling.

Before mounting your accessory, be sure it is a compatible hitch accessory. The BackSwing is only compatible with accessories that have a dedicated 2" shank, and it shouldn't be used with any type of adapter. If you aren't sure if your acessory is compatible with a hitch extender check with the accessory's manufacturer. Once confirmed, slide your accessory's shank into the BackSwing, install the accessory's hitch pin, and then follow any specific directions the accessory has for installation.

Yakima BackSwing Swing Away Hitch Extender Stablizer Bolt Securing Accessory

Once you have secured the shank of the accessory into the BackSwing's receiver, tighten down the stabilizer bolt and nut on top of the receiver tube until snug. This will hold the accessory in place and ensure a tight connection that reduces movement and noise while on the move.

Easy installation with Threaded Hitch Pin

The BackSwing installs quickly and easily with a threaded, anti-rattle hitch pin. Simply slide the shank into your 2" hitch receiver, insert the threaded hitch pin, and tighten it down with a wrench. This will also reduce noise and movement while the extender is installed. The unit comes with a hitch lock that uses a Yakima Same Key System (SKS) lock core to secure the extender to your vehicle. SKS cores can be swapped out to make all your Yakima products keyed alike.

Lastly, the BackSwing is only compatible with 2" receivers and shouldn't ever be used with a hitch adapter, reducer, or extender.

This is awesome. I am now able to use the back door on my Jeep and still keep my bike on the rack. This is my second item purchased from e-trailer. You need to let the people of Rad electric bike know about your great products. I am posting some pictures on the Facebook page for the other owners. Thanks again 605134

Do you have a question about this Accessories and Part?

  • Swing Away Hitch Extender for 1Up Bike Rack
  • I reached out to a representative of Yakima who said that the Yakima BackSwing Swing Away Hitch Extender # Y02483 had a receiver that had a depth of 8 inches and was 2-1/2 inches from the edge of the receiver to the center of the hitch pin hole. Another option for a swing away hitch extender is the Kuat Pivot # PV20B. As you can see by the accompanying diagram of the measurements, this extender has two hitch pin holes, the first of which is just under 2-3/4 inches from the edge of the...

  • Will the Yakima BackSwing # Y02483 Fit on a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with a Spare tire
  • It really depends on the location of the hitch pin hole on your trailer hitch. A trailer hitch like the Draw-Tite # 76104, which is a confirmed fit for your 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, sticks out significantly farther than OEM trailer hitches do so it would be less likely of an issue. I did measure the Yakima BackSwing # Y02483 and found that from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the arm assembly measured 8-1/2" while that same measurement to the handle was 11-3/4"....

  • Swing-Away Wheel Mount Bike Rack Recommendation for 4 Bikes
  • I do have a solution for you to have a 4-bike swing-away bike rack but unfortunately the RockyMounts BackStage # RKY10002 does not have an add-on. Instead you can use the RockyMounts SplitRail # RKY1140-4 with the Yakima BackSwing # Y02483. The SplitRail weighs 76 lbs and can hold up to 4 bikes that weigh a max of 40 lbs. It does have removable trays which when 2 of them are removed the weight capacity is increased to 60 lbs per bike. The BackSwing has a weight capacity of 250 lbs...

  • Recommended Swing Away Hitch Extender to Use with Swagman Chinook Bike Rack
  • I do have an option for you, however I don't recommend using the Yakima BackSwing Swing Away Hitch Extender # Y02483 with your Swagman Chinook # S64683. This is simply because Yakima does not want the extender to be used with any bike rack, like the Chinook, that uses an adapter sleeve to mount to 2 inch hitch receivers. Doing so would likely void the product's warranty. For your Chinook rack I instead recommend the Kuat Pivot Swing Away Hitch Extender # PV20B. I called and spoke with...

  • Recommended Swing Away for Swagman 2+2 Quad Bike Rack on 4Runner with Aftermarket Spare Tire Rack
  • The Swagman Quad 2+2 2-Bike and 4-Bike Platform Rack - 2" Hitches # S64692 has a measurement of 17-1/4 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest wheel tray. The shank raises at the 10 inch point. To get your swing away, I recommend the Kuat Pivot Swing Away # PV20B over the Yakima BackSwing # Y02483 because the handle is off to the side. The Yakima will be 14-1/2 inches from pin to pin and the Kuat is 11 inches from pin to pin so you will not have as much extension,...

  • Dimensions of Yakima BackSwing Swing-Away Hitch Extender
  • I went out to our warehouse to measure the Yakima BackSwing Swing Away Hitch Extender # Y02483 and found it was approximately 4-3/4" from the top of the extension to the top of the assembly. Please keep in mind the BackSwing was not fully assembled when I measured so there may be a slight difference in this dimension when it is fully assembled.

  • Will the Yakima BackSwing or the Kuat Pivot Locate a Bike Rack Further Away on a Sprinter Van
  • The pivot distance is actually pretty identical for the Yakima BackSwing # Y02483 and the Kuat Pivot # PV20B. Both manufacturers have actually confirmed that these are great options for a Sprinter Van. I recommend going with the Yakima BackSwing because it is 10 lbs lighter (only weighs 35 lbs) and has a longer shank so your bike rack will automatically sit about 3" - 4" further away from your Sprinter. Attached are some review videos of both swing away extenders mounted on the same...

  • What is the Distance Between the Hitch Pin Holes on the Yakima BackSwing # Y02483
  • The distance between the hitch pin hole that goes into the receiver of your vehicle's trailer hitch and the receiver that your bike rack/carrier installs into is 14-1/2" on center. We pulled this part and measured that distance for you. This puts the Yakima BackSwing # Y02483 3-1/2" further out than the furthest point of the Kuat Pivot # PV20B which is 11" on center.

  • Bike Rack Needed to Clear Rear Doors of a 2016 Ram ProMaster
  • I spoke with my contact at Swagman who said that when the center mast on the Swagman XTC-2 # S64670 is folded down it measures about 10-1/2". This is from the bottom of the shank that goes into the receiver on your 2016 Ram ProMaster and was taken with the 2" adapter on. So if you have a 2" receiver just measure 10-1/2" from the bottom of your receiver opening but if you have a 1-1/4" receiver you will need to subtract about 3/4" which means you will measure 9-3/4" from the bottom of your...

  • Swinging 4-Bike Bike Rack Needed for a 2018 Jeep JL Wrangler Unlimited Sahara with 18" Spare
  • From the center of the hitch pin hole to the handle of the Yakima SwingDaddy # Y02464 is 6". Since the handle is making contact with the spare tire on your 2018 Jeep JL Wrangler Unlimited Sahara it sounds like a better option would be to use the Yakima BackSwing # Y02483 with a 4-bike bike rack. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the BackSwing is 8-1/2" while that same measurement to the center of the operating handle is 11-3/4" (see attached picture). If you...

  • Will Yakima BackSwing Hitch Extender Work with Surf Rod or Cooler
  • The Yakima BackSwing Swing Away Hitch Extender # Y02483 referenced in your question is designed to work with most hitch-mounted accessories. There are a couple of things to keep in mind when determining if this will work well with your surf rod/cooler. First you will just want to make sure that your carrier is directly compatible with 2 inch receivers and that the combined weight of both the carrier and its contents will not exceed the BackSwing's 250 pound capacity. • For your Smartmotion E-City electric bike, I recommend the Saris Freedom 2 Bike Platform Rack # SA4412B which will allow you to hold the bike at the wheels and at the frame so you don't need the bike adapter bar you mentioned. Based on my research your bike is 25.5 kg which is just over 56 lbs, so this rack will accommodate your bike as it is rated for up to 60 lbs per bike. • Will the Thule Apex Bike Rack Work With The Yakima BackSwing
  • We have not physically tested the Thule Apex Bike Rack with the Yakima BackSwing Swing Away Hitch Extender part # Y02483 so I cannot confirm an exact fit but I do not see any apparent issue in doing so. However, the Yakima BackSwing will reduce your trailer hitch's weight capacity by 50% so you will need to keep this in mind while loading your bikes. This bike rack includes a hitch lock but not a cable lock to secure your bikes. I recommend adding the HandCuff lock kit # Y02466. This is the same case for all trunk mount bike racks on any vehicle. However, using the Yakima BackSwing will reduce your hitch's tongue weight capacity by 50% so that is something you will need to keep in mind.
