Hey everyone, it's Evangeline here and today we're gonna be taking a look at the Yakima Wheelhouse front wheel holder for your roof. Whenever you have a fork mounted roof bike rack, the big question is always, where am I gonna put the front wheel A lot of people toss them into the vehicle, but sometimes let's say you have to throw it into the truck bed. That might not be as safe for the wheel. You might have dirt that you don't want in the interior of your vehicle and it might be a little bulky and takes up space you might not have. So the solution to that is if you're mounting your bike to your roof, why not mount your wheel too This will work with most types of wheels, although you do have some limitations. Main limitation is gonna be the tire width.
You can carry a maximum of three inch wide tires, so if you have your really fat bike tires, then this strap might not be enough to wrap around it. The second thing you think of is your skewer. So if you have a quick release skewer, perfectly fine, you don't need any adapters. If you have a through axle bike though, you are going to need these separate through axle skewer in order to secure that wheel. This will fit most through axles with the space between the forks being 110 millimeters.
The main point of this is to make it convenient for you to carry around your front wheel. So this needs to be easy to remove. It's a matter of pressing levers on each side and lifting up your zip strip and then going over to your wheel and removing the quick release, or if you have the through axle, removing that skewer. And just like that, you are now ready to attach this to your bike. It's gonna be the same process in reverse, but what if you're not carrying around a wheel at this moment With a press of a button, you can fold down those forks and have it in the compact position.
This is gonna be ideal for if you're just driving around town and you don't want this sticking up, or if you have limited garage clearance, you can store it like this too. If you're trying to carry around multiple bikes and multiple wheels, the space will take up on your crossbar is going to be five inches. That's measured from the end to the other end. The way this attaches, it's through universal spin grip clamp. So compared to the straps, you'll see on the roof mounted bike racks, this one uses two clamps that pinch your crossbar.
They're accessed by the knob at the end, so loosening the knob allows you to loosen the rack and then that way you can remove this from your roof. When you need attach this to your vehicle, you just open up those clamps and then fit this onto your roof. This will fit most types of crossbars, whether it's round, square, or arrow bars. And if you want to, once you do have this secured, you can add a metal lock core. You are gonna have to use these same key system lock cores from Yakima though, so make sure to plan ahead to get enough for what you need. Those metal lock cores are probably gonna be the main reason why you'd be interested in the wheelhouse wheel carrier because if you have a Yakima roof bike rack, being able to get both your bike and the front wheel with just one key is very helpful.
