Video Transcript for Yakima Hitch Bike Racks 8890298 Review

Today we're gong to be taking a look at the 2" shank adapter for the Yakima Ridgeback and FullTilt bike racks. Now this adapter kit converts the 1-1/4" shank on your Yakima Ridgeback or FullTilt bike rack manufactured before November, 2015, for use with a 2" hitch receiver. If your Ridgeback or FullTilt rack was manufactured after November, 2015, you will need part number 8880612. It's available and sold separately at etrailer.com. Again, it's going to fit the Yakima Ridgeback bike racks model numbers Y02458, Y02457, or Y02459. Also fits the Yakima FullTilt bike racks, part number Y02463 or Y02462. With this kit you're going to get the aluminum adapter, you're going to get the steel wedge spacer, you're going to get the mounting bolts, and the necessary hex wrenches to get everything installed and tight.

When installing this, it simply just slides onto the shank of the bike rack and then the spacer goes right there. The large bolt installs in the large hole right here, and then you use the large hex wrench to get that installed and fully tightened. The two smaller bolts, one installs at the top, one installs here at the side. You use a smaller wrench to get those tightened all the way down. That's really all there is to it.

That's going to do it for today's look at the 2" shank adapter for the Yakima Ridgeback and FullTilt bike racks.

  • How To Determine The Correct Shank Adapter For Yakima Ridgeback 4 Bike Rack
The difference between the two shank adapters for your Yakima Ridgeback 4 Bike Rack, the # 8890298 and # 8880612, is the size of the mounting hardware used. The # 8890298 uses M6 bolts where the # 8880612 uses M8 bolts. To determine which one is correct for you I recommend measuring the holes in your shank. If your holes measure 6-7mm you will need the # 8890298, and if the holes measure 8-9mm you will need the # 8880612 instead. I included videos for each of the products mentioned...

  • How To Check If Yakima Ridgeback Was Produced Before Or After 2015 To Find Correct Shank Adapter
The easiest way to determine if you have the older Yakima Ridgeback (pre Nov 2015) or the newer (post Nov 2015) is by looking at the cradles where the zip strips attach. The older pre-2015 models used a gray release button while the newer post-2015 models used a black release button. If you have the gray button then you would want to use 2" Shank Adapter for Yakima Ridgeback or FullTilt Bike Rack - Manufactured before November 2015 # 8890298. • How To Use Shank Adapter For Yakima Bike Racks
The 2" Shank Adapter for Yakima Ridgeback or FullTilt Bike Rack - Manufactured before November 2015 # 8890298 installs onto the bike rack's shank and then slides into the trailer hitch receiver. Then, you can tighten the bike rack shank to the receiver by turning the knob; this engages the anti-rattle hitch pin and locks the bike rack and shank adapter into the receiver's opening. You can see this process in the attached demonstration video.
