Today we're gonna be taking a look at the Valterra bug screen for Atwood Hydro Flame RV furnace vents. Pretty simple to install. It's made from a heavy duty stainless steel construction. The screen is designed to keep out unwanted pests like nesting insects, small rodents, things like that. It also is gonna feature minimal airflow restriction. It's gonna come with one screen, one installation tool, and two spring fasteners.
The overall diameter of the unit measuring edge to edge is gonna be about 3 and 5/8 of an inch, and then the overall depth or thickness is about 1 and 5/16 of an inch deep. Now it's always a good idea to inspect your screens monthly and clean when necessary to maintain proper airflow. When you're ready to install it you want to position the screen over the heater vent and determine the best locations to attach your springs. The open end of the spring, this would connect to the screen, and then the other end has a crossbar shaft that goes across. That connects to the vent. Now the hook should engage three wires on the screen, so it goes through there.
Engage three wires and then place this back on the vent. And then you use the included tool as a little cutout in it. So you place the tool through the screen, engage with the crossbar on the other end of the spring, and then you stretch the spring, that way you can easily hook it onto the furnace vent. I made the mistake of installing the screen to check the fit before inserting the springs. I had a heck of a time removing the screen so that I could place the springs in place. It turns out the supplied springs are actually too long I ended up pulling the one end of the springs out ad snapping them across the screen to hold tension.
My experience with etrailer is that they are responsive, have competitive prices, and deliver on time. Hard to beat that combination.
The screen snapped right onto the vent and held firm, so I saw no need to use the springs. We'll see if it stays on. I have some reservations about using these screens since they can potentially restrict flow of air, but I couldn't find any reviews where this was a problem, and I don't want to deal with wasps and other insects.
