The unique free-backing design, patented by DICO, lets your trailer move in reverse without actuating the brakes. When you begin backing up, the brake shoes are firm against the drum, as in a braking situation. As you continue in reverse, however, the shoes turn with the drum until the lining pressure is released and you are able to back up freely.

These brakes are designed to eliminate friction between the shoes and drum when you are driving in reverse. A trailer breakaway kit will not be effective should your trailer disconnect from your tow vehicle when backing up.

Video Transcript for Titan Trailer Brakes T4489500 Review

Today we're going to review part #: T4489500. This is the Titan Galphorite free backing hydraulic trailer brake assembly for the right hand side of your trailer. This drum brake assembly will have a galphorite plating which will deliver superior corrosion protection. The backing plate and the shoe levers are sealed with permanently bonded electro coat primer. Has a second coat of rugged acrylic which is applied to the backing plate which makes it virtually rustproof. The wheel cylinders are treated with a hot black oxide, the internal components are zinc plated and it has stainless steel springs.

Because of the galphorite plating this is a good brake assembly to use in any boat or marine applications. The free backing design will let you reverse without trailer brakes being activated and it is designed for use with hydraulic brake actuators that do not include the reverse lockouts. And this is a 12 inch by 2 inch brake assembly. The way you measure that is the diameter of the brake shoes would be 12 inches and the width of the brake shoe will be 2 inches. This does use a five bolt mounting pattern, so what you will need to do is check the axle on your trailer to make sure that the brake mounting flange will have five bolts.

The center hole diameter is 3 1/4 inches in diameter. This brake assembly when paired with a left hand assembly will fit on axles rated up to 6000lbs. This does have a one year warranty and a 2 year corrosion warranty. And briefly on the free backing system, what that means is that it will let your trailer move in reverse without actuating the brakes. When you begin backing up the brake shoes are firm against the drum as in any braking situation and as you continue in reverse the shoes will turn with the drum until the lining pressure is released and you're able to back up freely.

And just a quick tip, the way you can tell this is a right hand side assembly is the smaller shoe will face the front of the trailer, the larger shoe will face the rear of the trailer and usually on a free backing design the smaller front shoe will have like a D pattern or a D design to it. And that should do it for our review of part #: T4489500.

The brakes fit perfectly and have performed flawlessly. The replacement was just routine maintenance to replace worn brakes. They shipped fast, well packed and ready to bolt on. Buying them fully assembled was far easier than trying to replace the shoes themselves. Besides, if you exposed your trailer to any kind of salt water - you'll definitely want to change ALL parts. The cost is negligible and well worth knowing they will perform when yo need them to. Why chance replacing just a few parts? Yea, you might save some money, but not much. Fantastic service and parts! I doubt I'll shop elsewhere! Thank you! 244234

Bolt on in place of the old ones in less time than it takes to try to clean up and repair the rusty old ones. Great price too. The Galphotire coating looks like it will outlast the trailer. Definitely made my job easier. I used these to repair the brakes on an M-1102 military trailer. These don't have the parking brake option like the original brakes, but then I never used the Parking brake. E-trailer also has the assemblies with the parking brake. 214330

This product is better than buying just wheel cylinders and brake shoes. The price made me skeptical of the quality, but these appear to be the real deal. They come fully assembled down to the contact points being already lubed. The shipping was unbelievably fast and everything was packed carefully and suitably to protect the products from damage in shipping. It is very evident that the employees at etrailer.com care about their products and customers. 118215

I replaced the right and left brake assemblies and repacked the wheel bearings on my 1979 EZ Loader trailer on a Saturday afternoon. The entire job was very easy to do. I did have to do some minor re-tapping of the original hydraulic fittings primarily to get it to thread into the assembly fitting with ease, but even that was a snap (my neighbor just happened to have a tap and die set). I pull about 4000 lb of Searay and trailer combined (I weighed them on a public scale), and it was past time to replace the assemblies and actuator which had major corrosion after all those years of good service. If nothing else, I have peace of mind that all is well behind me. 50589

Ordered both left and right assemblies. These look great and bolted right up. Adjusted easily. Only trouble with these is my brake line fitting would not thread into the wheel cylinder. I had to re-tap the holes on both sides. I first thought it was just some oversight on the first assembly, but when I had to do it on both of them, then that made me start to wonder. If you order these, don't be suprised if you also need a 1/8-27 NPT to run in the wheel cylinder ports. I'm sure I will like these much better than the original rusted steel assemblies that these replaced. Time will tell. 22574

  • Parts Needed To Convert Electric Drum Brakes To Hydraulic Disc Brakes On 5th Wheel Trailer
We do have a hydraulic disc brake kit that will fit 8 bolt hub, 8 on 6-1/2 Inch bolt pattern, 1/2 inch bolts. In addition to a hydraulic disk brake kit, you will also need a brake line kit, and a electric over hydraulic actuator, and a brake controller that is compatible with electric over hydraulic brakes. For a disc brake kit to replace your drum brake assembly, you will need the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit, part # K2HR712, which is designed for 7,000 lb axles, 16 Inch or larger wheels....

According to Dexter Axle, beginning with the 2015 model year, the GM OEM brake controller will be compatible with the Dexter Electric Over Hydraulic Trailer Brake Actuators like part # K71-651. Previous model years weren't compatible, and would need to use an aftermarket brake controller. I really like the Tekonsha P3, part # 90195. The P3 has a setting that makes it compatible with electric over hydraulic actuators, and is very easy to use and to set up. I really like the fact that...

  • Restoring Damaged Brakes and Lights on 1984 Holiday Rambler Trailer Left Stationary for 15 Years
It is not at all unreasonable that a travel trailer left idle for 15 years will need lots of TLC, including brake and lighting components, plus potentially others. Even in the best storage conditions, 15 years can wear heavily on things like wiring, lights, brake assemblies and other trailer systems like water and sewage. • Troubleshooting Kodiak 225 Trailer Brake System that Keeps Breaking Calipers In Half
I spoke to my contact at Kodiak about the issue you are having and he said that sometimes if a trailer braking system is doing way too much of the braking the pressure can get too high for the calipers and they can break (not brake). He said that the trailer's brakes are designed as a supplement for the vehicle's braking and they are not intended to do the majority of the braking for the towing setup.

  • How to Determine Which Brake Pads Work on my Trailer?
The replacement brake pads you need are determined by the caliper that you have on your trailer. The Kodiak Ceramic Brake Pads # K250CP fit any Kodiak caliper with the 250 stamped on them. If you have a different caliper and/or a different sized axle these likely won't fit in your existing calipers. If you can let me know what type of caliper you have or what axle you have on your trailer, I can recommend the correct replacement brake pads for you- pictures also work.

  • How to Identify Capacity of Axles on 2009 Keystone Sydney 31KFW
The quickest and easiest way to identify your axle capacity is by the wheel bearings. The bearing numbers are stamped into the bearing cage as shown in the photo I have edited for you. Once the capacity is known, I can recommend replacement hubs and brake assemblies.

  • Trailer Disc Brake Venting Design
Slotted rotors do a great job dissipating heat on disc brake systems. Trailer brakes do create heat, but the venting between both sides of the rotors is sufficient for dissipating heat for trailers. I attached a page that has all of the disc brake systems we offer for trailers. Typically only performance vehicles come with slotted rotors. Most vehicles that are used for just regular everyday driving use rotors just like the ones in the link I attached.

  • Troubleshooting Brakes Not Working on 1984 Holiday Rambler with Surge Brakes
There are several possibilities that could be causing your brakes to not function properly. Is there a certain reason you believe the issue to be the master cylinder? Poor braking performance may not mean a faulty master cylinder. The first thing you will want to check is the brake adjustment. It could be that the brakes need to be adjusted and so they are not functioning. Another option is to take the hub off to inspect the brake pad to see how much brake pad is left. This is a good...
