The unique free-backing design, patented by Titan, lets your trailer move in reverse without actuating the brakes. When you begin backing up, the brake shoes are firm against the drum, as in a braking situation. As you continue in reverse, however, the shoes turn with the drum until the lining pressure is released and you are able to back up freely.

These brakes are designed to eliminate friction between the shoes and drum when you are driving in reverse. A trailer breakaway kit will not be effective should your trailer disconnect from your tow vehicle when backing up.

Video Transcript for Titan Trailer Brakes T4423400 Review

Today we're looking at the Titan 10 inch hydraulic brake assembly part number t4423400. This setup is for the right hand side, we can tell this by looking at the brake shoe lining. Our forward shoe is going to be smaller than the rear or primary shoe. This is our single servo setup which means it has one wheel cylinder and one wheel cylinder piston which will push out against the shoes and create a wedge effect inside the braking drum. This assembly mounts on our 4 bolt flange setup where the holes are pre drilled through the backing plate. They will mount easily onto your 4 stud flange setup.

When setting up your initial adjustment, we use a star wheel to adjust the shoes out to the braking drum, you want to create a light drag. And then as the brake shoe linings wear, we'll need to make an adjustment to our star wheel by removing the grommet on the backing plate and adjusting the shoes out to keep a nice even braking. This setup is on a graphite backing plate for minimum corrosion making a good application for marine use. It also has a fall away brake system which will allow it to minimize the brake drag when backing up, making a good application for braking couplers. When we combine this right hand side with the left hand side, we can create up to 3750 pounds of braking capacity.

To measure our shoe assembly, simply take our tape measure, go across the linings, we have a 10 inch and 2 1/4. So this assembly will fit a 10 inch by 2 1/4 hub drum assembly. This assembly comes with a 1 year warranty and a 2 year corrosion warranty. There you have it for the Titan 10 inch graphite trailer braking assembly part number t4423400.

Seems like good quality brakes. Took a while to receive. They said it would ship in 24-48 hours but it took 3 - 4 days to ship. And two more days to receive. I only wished that the brakes had come with bolts to attach. Now I have to some bolts that are rated for this set of brakes. I love the fact that they are all assembled! Keeps me from screwing it up. 141379

I have a tandem axle car carrier with surge brakes. I'm probably a typical owner and never purged the brake fluid which resulted in rust in the system and frozen wheel cylinders. Rather than just buy new wheel cylinders I bought the complete assembly (wheel cylinder, backing plate, and brakes) since to replace the wheel cylinder you have to remove the backing plate anyway. I managed to complete all four wheels, plus adjust and bleed, in about six hours. The supplied units fit perfectly. Thanks etrailer! 36261

  • Replacement Brake Assembly Recommendation for a Dico 15638 Assembly
Your Dico brake assemblies are 10 inch by 2-1/4 inch so the part # T4423400 and # T4423500 would both work as replacements. There is quite a bit of overlap between Titan and Dico parts.

  • Free Backing Hydraulic Trailer Brakes Not Allow Trailer To Back Up
Basically, a free backing brake assembly like # T4423400, will have one shoe that is shorter than the other and the bracket will be a different shape. On a regular assembly, the shoes will by mirror images of each other. Also, on a free backing assembly, you would be able to back up. Also if the actuator has a reverse lockout on it, make sure it is engaged so you can back up. There are 2 types of lockout: manual and electric. A manual lockout will have a lever on the coupler that you...

  • Are All 4 Bolt Trailer Brake Mounting Flanges the Same Bolt Pattern
Yes, the 4 bolt mounting pattern that the Titan Galphorite Free-Backing Hydraulic Trailer Brake Assembly # T4423400 and the Demco Hydraulic Drum Brake Assembly # 40715 have is the same 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern. Basically all 4 bolt brake mounting flanges are the exact same 4 on 4 inch pattern.

  • Dexter 10 x 2-1/4 Inch Brake Assembly with Different Bolt Hole Spacing
A 10 x 2-1/4 inch brake assembly would typically be found on a 3500 lb axle, and would use a 4 bolt mounting flange whose holes are 2-7/8 inches apart on center. However, there was an exception. Before May of 2009, Dexter manufactured a 4400 lb capacity axle that used mounting flanges that had holes that were 2-13/16 inches on center. An example of those would be the # 23-454-455 Dexter Brake assemblies. That axle was kind of an oddity, I believe Dexter built that as a proprietary...

  • Free-backing Titan Brake Assembly # T4423400 Recommendation for a Sailboat Trailer
The choice of free backing brakes or not comes down to a couple different factors. If the trailer has a lockout (electric or hydraulic) then free backing plates would be redundant as their would already be a system that would allow for reversing without the brakes being activated. If you have a coupler that does not have a reverse lockout feature then free backing plates would be the solution to allow for backing up without activating the brakes. If it were me I would choose a setup...

The part you were asking about has been discontinued but wouldn't work for your flange. Instead, you would bolt brake assemblies like the Titan Galphorite Free-Backing Hydraulic Trailer Brake Assembly Right Hand # T4423400 and the left hand version # T4423500 to a four bolt mounting flange. The # T1544600042 that you referenced will ride on to the spindle of your trailer and will spin with the wheel assembly. • One Wheel on a Boat Trailer Locks Up and Trailer Actuator is Leaking Brake Fluid
It sounds like you have a leak in the system either in a brake line or at the actual wheel cylinder. If this is the case, you may not have to replace the entire hub or brake assembly, just the part that is leaking. A leak can also draw air into the system and cause the brakes to lock. My theory is that it is the wheel cylinder on that one side. After you inspect the brakes and find the culprit, make sure that you bleed the braking system. There are vacuum type systems that you can use...

  • Replacing Hydraulic Brakes With Electric Drum Brakes On Trailer
I have attached a link to a helpful article that explains what is needed to add electric drum brakes to a trailer. Your Dico brake assemblies are 10 inch by 2-1/4 inch so the part # T4423400 and # T4423500 would both work as replacements. The best way to make sure you get the right components is to pull the hub and get the bearings numbers from the side of the bearings as shown in the attached photo. • Passenger Side Free Backing Brake Heating Up and Braking Problems on Trailer
There could be a couple of things going on here but you have done well to take a look at all the parts to make sure they are in good working order. First, it is important to note that even free backing brakes require initial adjustment. TITAN Surg-O-Matic trailer brakes incorporate a back up feature that makes it necessary to rotate the wheels in the direction of forward rotation only when making adjustments. Free backing brake assemblies can be used on a trailer that has a reverse lockout. If it's a manual lockout they would allow you to back your trailer up at any given moment without having to get out and activate the lockout. As long as your hub/drums are 10 by 2-1/4 the part # T4423400 for the right hand side and part # T4423500 for the left hand side would be a great choice.

I could not find any type of photo of a Dico 15638 drum, but my understanding is they are 10" diameter x 2-1/4" wide, but if there is any potential interference with the magnet you would need to replace your hubs. If you would like to send a photo so I can take a look, please do. To add electric brakes to a 3,500 lb axle (if that is what you have) you will also need a 4-bolt Brake Mounting Flange # 4-35, a Breakaway Kit such as # 20400, wiring for your trailer as well as a brake controller...

The difference, other than cost, between the Titan Uni-Servo free backing Hydraulic 10 inch Trailer Brake Assemblies, # T4423400, and # T4071500, is that the # T4423400 assembly has Galphorite plating which delivers superior corrosion protection for boat trailers that are repeatedly exposed to water and sometimes salt water.
