I have and have had a Thule T2 for use in a 2 in received for some time... it’s a great rack and I have no complaints. About a year ago, I bought the two bike add on, so I have great flexibility when it comes to carrying 1-4 bikes. I recently purchased a small car for out of town bike trips that has much better fuel economy than my big ol truck. The hitch has a 1 1/4 receiver as the only option. I considered purchasing another T2, but I already have a lot tied up in my racks and don’t need another complete one... I saw this item and I originally considered sealing the shank out for the one on my T2, but then I began to think that I might be able to “convert” my add on by simply swapping the bike trays over to this shank. Happy to report that it works perfectly, I don’t often need the addl 2 bike add on and when I do it’s usually something I plan in advance for (road trip with friends, etc). My plan is to now have a complete rack for a 2 in setup and a complete one for the 1 1/4 and then swap the trays over to the add on when needed. I will have to share the pin/lock between the two racks but I never use both at the same time. Bottom line, if you need to convert an existing 2 in setup or an add on (minus the pin, etc), this will work for you!! 485604

You are not going to find this part any place else. It was perfect. The previous owner of the Thule bike rack had drilled two holes in the hitch bar and compromised the integrity. Replacement was perfect and the bicycle rack was saved. Very Fast shipping and a very good price....Thanks again.. 313032

Do you have a question about this Accessories and Part?

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2017 Mazda 6 for Carrying Thule T2
  • The Thule T2 you have part number TH916XTR is only a fit for 2 inch hitches and your 2017 Mazda 6 only has 1-1/4 inch hitches available like the Draw Tite # 24908 (which would be your best choice), so what you would need to do is replace the shank of your rack with the 1-1/4 inch shank part # 753-3709 so that you can use the rack on your vehicle.

  • Fitting a Thule T2 Classic to a 1-1/4 inch Trailer Hitch Reciever
  • Smaller vehicles like 2017 Audi A3's have the smaller 1-1/4 inch hitch receiver. If you haven't purchased it yet, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sport Frame Reciever Hitch, part # 24930. This is a quick install, no drilling required model that takes less than an hour to install onto a vehicle and will allow you to use a range of racks available through our website. As for the rack itself, you have two options. You can use an adapter like the Brophy 1-1/4 inch to 2 inch Hitch Reciever,...

  • The EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 306-X7266 will install in the same location as your OEM hitch, but if you don't have the bolt on bumper beam I do recommend adding it but you will need to confirm with Subaru if it is necessary or not. This will give you the 2 inch hitch receiver compatible with your Thule T2 Classic # TH9044 you were wanting. This is a confirmed fit that will work perfectly for this application. • Hitch Recommendation for a 2007 Toyota Matrix and Converting 2 inch T2 Bike Rack to 1-1/4 inch
  • The thing about hitch adapters/extenders like the part # MT70355 that you referenced is that they reduce the capacity of the hitch they are used on by 50 percent. The hitch you referenced part # 24812 has a tongue weight capacity of 200 lbs so it would only have a 100 lb capacity with that extension. The T2 part # TH9044 that you referenced weighs 60 lbs so you would only have 40 lbs of capacity for bikes with the setup you referenced. Your best solution would be to convert your Thule...

  • How to Convert a Thule T2 TH916XTR So that it Can be Used in a 1-1/4 inch Hitch
  • You can convert your Thule T2 Bike Rack part # TH9044 to basically be a # TH9045 by simply replacing the shank and backbone assembly of your current rack with a # 753-3709 . I spoke to my contact at Thule and she said that this is the only way to accomplish this. This will allow your rack to be used in a 1-1/4 inch hitch.

  • Does Draw Tite Hitch # 24914 Fit 2017 Mazda 3 Hatchback w/ Appearance Package
  • The Draw Tite hitch part # 24914 that you referenced is a fit for your 2017 Mazda 3 hatchback with the appearance package. That being said you can replace the shank of your T2 to allow it to be used in a 1-1/4 inch hitch but it depends on which version of the T2 you have. What you need is the replacement shank part # 753-3709 if you have the T2 Classic. This will replace the shank you have and allow the bike rack to fit a 1-1/4 inch hitch.

  • How to Convert a T2 Bike Rack for 1-1/4 inch Hitch to 2 inch Hitch
  • You can convert your Thule T2 Bike Rack part # TH9044 to basically be a TH9045 by simply replacing the shank and backbone assembly of your current rack with a # 753-3709. I spoke to my contact at Thule and she said that this is the only way to accomplish this. I asked about the use of a sleeve adapter like part # HT02 and she said she was aware that they work for some customers, but since they haven't tested it they can't say for certain if it would be safe.

  • How to Carry 4 Bikes on a 2015 Volkswagen Golf SE TDI
  • Both trailer hitch manufacturers and bike rack manufacturers agree that on a Class I hitch the most bikes you can safely carry is 2. This is because a third bike or more puts the weight too far away from the receiver. This creates too much torque on the receiver, like using a long cheater bar to loosen a lug nut when changing a tire. It can damage the hitch and/or the vehicle. Using an adapter will reduce the tongue weight capacity of a trailer hitch by 50 percent. So on a hitch rated...

  • Does Replacement Shank for Thule T2 2-Bike Rack Come with Locking Bolt
  • I spoke with my contact at Thule and she said part # 753-3709 does not come with the hitch lock, however you can use the hitch lock that came originally with the T2 bike rack. If you no longer have that part, you will want replacement part # THSTL2.

  • Can the Thule T2 Bike Rack be Used with a 2017 Mazda CX-9 with Factory 1-1/4 Inch Trailer Hitch
  • I can't recommend going forward with the T2 hitch since not enough of the shank will be in the hitch receiver on your 2017 Mazda CX-9. The best solution I can offer is to remove the factory hitch on the vehicle (as long as it is not welded on) and replace it with a Class III hitch # 76020. This will actually cost less than changing the shank on the bike rack! If the hitch is welded on I recommend going with a different bike rack such as the super lite BikeWing, # B01311. It weighs just...

  • How To Install Replacement Shank for Thule T2 2-Bike Racks for 1-1/4 Trailer Hitches
  • The Shank for Thule T2 2-Bike Racks part # 753-3709 is a replacement shank for the Thule T2 bike racks # TH917XTR and part # TH917XTR-FB. It basically replaces the shank and backbone assembly of these racks. You can use the installation instructions from the bike rack to replace the backbone assembly. You want to loosen the bolts in the existing backbone assembly to remove it. Then follow the instructions I have attached for the Thule T2 Classic 2 Bike Platform Rack part # TH9045.

  • Compatibility Between Thule T2 and T2 Pro XT Bike Racks and 2 Bike Add Ons
  • The Replacement Shank for Thule T2 2-Bike Racks for 1-1/4" Trailer Hitches # 753-3709 will only work with the T2 classic 2 bike # TH9045 as a replacement or to make the # TH9044 compatible with a 2 inch receiver. It will not work with the T2 Pro bike racks and will not work with the 2 bike add on # TH9046 because that 4 bike rack will only work with the 2 inch shank # 753-3581 that comes on the # TH9044. The newer T2 Pro XT comes in 2 colors, black and silver and also 2 sizes the 1-1/4...

  • Will Switching to 1-1/4 Shank on Thule T2 Classic Bike Rack be OK With 2012 Subaru Outback OEM Hitch
  • You can definitely use the Replacement Shank for Thule T2 2-Bike Racks # 753-3709 to give your Thule T2 Classic 2-Bike Platform Rack # TH9044 a 1-1/4" shank and you won't have any issues with the weight of the rack. Based on my research your 2012 Subaru Outback's factory hitch has a 200 lb tongue weight capacity and the T2 Classic weighs 50 lbs with a 100 lb capacity so even if you had bikes that maxed out the capacity you would be just fine.

  • How to Change my Thule T2 Bike Rack from a 2-Inch to a 1/1/4 Inch Receiver for my 1998 Subaru Legacy
  • Since there isn't any 2-inch trailer hitch receivers that are a fit for your 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback, you could use the shank and backbone assembly # 753-3709. This will replace your current 2-inch backbone assembly with the 1-1/4 inch version. Another option, If you prefer to keep your T2 bike rack with the original 2 inch backbone assembly, is to add a hitch adapter such as # HTAD. • Can a T2 Classic Bike Rack for 2 inch Hitch be Converted to 1-1/4 inch Hitch
  • Yes, the shank of the T2 Classic bike racks can be swapped so that you can fit the rack to a different size hitch. What you need is the replacement shank part # 753-3709. This will replace the shank you have and allow the bike rack to fit a 1-1/4 inch hitch.

You can swap the shank of your rack to the smaller hitch size and be able to use this hitch without an adapter. For that you'd want the part # 753-3709. • Options for Using 2-Inch Class III Bike Rack in 1-1/4-Inch Class II Hitch
  • A hitch adapter can allow a 2-inch accessory item like your Thule rack to be used in a 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch like Draw-Tite # 36538. But the downside to using any adapter is that it will cause you to lose 50-percent of your hitch's capacity. This is due to the change in the geometry of the system when an adapter is added. An adapter like Maxx Tow # MT70355 will fit your 1-1/4-inch Class II hitch and provide a 2-inch receiver opening as well as a 4-1/2-inch rise for better ground...

  • Using a T2 Classic for 2 Inch Hitches with a 2005 Infiniti G35 Coupe with 1-1/4 Inch Curt Hitch
  • There are a couple of things to think about when using Curt trailer hitch # C11483 with a bike rack on your 2005 Infiniti G35 Coupe. The first is that the trailer hitch is a Class I rated for 150 pounds tongue weight. The use of an adapter will reduce the tongue weight capacity by 50 percent. So the combined weight of the bike rack and bikes cannot exceed 75 pounds. The bike rack itself weighs 50 pounds meaning you would only have 25 pounds to work with when loading bikes. • Can a Thule T2 Bike Rack be Adapted to Fit a Class I Trailer Hitch on a 2014 Volkswagen Passat
  • All of the trailer hitches for the 2014 Volkswagen Passat are Class I hitches with 1-1/4 inch receivers. If you used an adapter to go from a 1-1/4 inch to a 2 inch it would reduce the tongue weight capacity of the hitches by 50 percent (from 200 pounds down to 100 pounds). The T2, # TH9044, weighs about 60 pounds meaning you could then only put 40 pounds of bikes on the rack before it is maxed out. The average adult bike weighs around 30 pounds. Also the adapter will put extra stress...
