Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Installed in a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee High Altitude to tow 5,000 pounds of boat and trailer. Had reviewed many different models and styles, but in the end, this unit looked the easiest to install. Although I just followed others lead on screwing into the plastic panel left of the steering wheel, it has held up and the location has been pretty good, but I have bumped it with my knee a few times. The functionality is superb though and that is what really matters.

2017 Chrysler Pacifica

I purchased the Tekonsha P3 electric brake controller to use on our 2017 Pacifica Touring-L Plus with towing package. Our Pacifica was pre-wired for an electric brake controller. So along with P3, I ordered the plug-in wiring adapter 3045-P made for the Pacifica. First I determined where to mount the P3, making sure the wiring adapter would reach the P3. I located the Pacifica's pre-wired harness. I had to remove an empty plug that was installed into the receptacle on the end of the pre-wired harness. I then plugged the the adapter into the now empty pre-wired receptacle and then the other end into the P3 (the P3 lit up immediately). I zip tied the wires of the adapter in a way that it would not interfere with anything under the dash. The install was then completed. I liked how easy it was to install everything. The P3 will be used to control the brakes on our R-Pod travel trailer. Adjusting the P3 was as easy as reading the instructions that came with it. The display, when the controller is not in use, will light up when using the vehicles brakes (trailer not connected). When the vehicle is not in use the display will eventually turn off. See the pictures I supplied.

Comments
The wire harness is working great. We have had no connection problems. Our Tekonha P3 electric brake controller has been working great. With our new larger R-Pod trailer it took me a while to figure out the proper setting for the controller as I had the setting too high. Once I zeroed in on the setting, braking is nice and smooth. It was a good purchase.

This product is excellent. The install could not be easier unless you have very tiny hands :-). It was a little hard to reach the factory installed connection but I got it done. The harness comes with plenty of cable for mounting your brake controller wherever you need to in the driver seat area. We mounted ours low, but I can easily see it from my driving position. We are taking our first road trip with our new tow vehicle this weekend and will give it a good workout. About 200 mile round trip over the hills of Tennessee :-).

2018 Chrysler Pacifica

I recently purchased the cable Item # 3045-P for my pacifica. It functions as advertised but 12 to 18 inches longer, for my application is needed. I do not want to splice an extension if I can avoid. I would rather plug an pre-fabbed extension onto the end. Then when not towing, I could unplug the extension (and controller). I could fabricate my own extension if I could find the 4-pin male flat connector that would match the 4-pin flat black female connector on the cable.

Comments
Hints from other users helped me find a mounting spot that did not require an extension. Very satisfied with the harness.

I bought the prodigy p2 and the attaching cable for my 2015 jeep. The installation was easy after I watched the video. Since the prodigy can be tilted forward I mounted it on the right side of steering wheel on the dash just above the lower air bag. I used the plastic holder as it seemed better than the bracket in that location. You can see the readout thru the steering wheel when driving straight ahead without taking your eyes off the road. See pictures of the mounting. Regards George

Worked perfectly. Arrived in a timely manner from E-Trailer.

- 3045-P
by:

By buying the extension wiring you are able to install the controller on the left side of the dash board and utilize the OEM connector under the dash. Placing the controller where recommended in the video is not optimum in that it is located too far down and away from the driver. By simply removing the dash board side panel on a Jeep Grand Cherokee you can route the wiring from the OEM plug to the controller mounted with Velcro on top of the dash!

While I don't know off-hand whether or not you'll have to get your 2018 Dodge Durango flashed to use a brake controller like the P3 # 90195 with the Adapter # 3045-P, there is an easy way to figure that out. At the very least you should see the 12V power pin active, but if you plug in your trailer and the lights are working then you shouldn't have to take your Durango in to a dealer. If your Dodge Durango has the factory 7-way the 3045-P will mate with the connector underneath your dash for a brake controller such as the 90195. See the attached technical bulletin. This should not be the case on your Durango though.
