Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Video Transcript for Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Today on our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, we'll be installing the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake Controller, part number 90195. We'll be doing this in conjunction with the Tekonsha Plug-and-Play Direct Fit Wiring Harness, part number 3045-P, designed to plug into the Jeep Grand Cherokee tow port. It displays a no trailer connection until we plug it in. When it's connected, we'll see it boot up. It indicates we're in Boost 1 trailer wiring connected. We can adjust the gain as necessary or go through the menu display for the brake type.

We can also go through the boost settings from off, to 1, 2, or 3. Here at the bottom, we have the manual sweep which allows you to apply the trailer braking without touching the vehicle brake pedal. Here's our direct fit wiring harness. The gray end will match up with the manufacturer's gray plug. Go ahead and plug directly into it. Then, once plugged in, we'll go ahead and route the remaining portion of our harness over to where we'll be mounting the brake controller.

Keep in mind to stay away from any moving components such as the gas, brake, or parking brake pedal, or even possibly the steering column when routing your wire. As we route the wiring harness, we'll go ahead and take the zip ties and secure it as necessary. With the wiring harness installed, we'll attach the brake controller bracket using the 2 screws provided. On this application, we'll mount the plastic brake controller holder using the 2 screws, 1 on each side. Now we have both brake controller brackets in place, we'll mount the brake controller. First, take the wiring harness and plug it into the back of the brake controller.

Then we'll mount the brake controller into the bracket. There you have it for the installation of the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake Controller, part number 90195, in conjunction with the Tekonsha Plug-and-Play Direct Fit Wiring Harness, part number 3045-P, on our 2014 Jeep Grande Cherokee. .

By buying the extension wiring you are able to install the controller on the left side of the dash board and utilize the OEM connector under the dash. Placing the controller where recommended in the video is not optimum in that it is located too far down and away from the driver. By simply removing the dash board side panel on a Jeep Grand Cherokee you can route the wiring from the OEM plug to the controller mounted with Velcro on top of the dash! 778945

The price was very fair considering the alternative of paying an installer retail price plus; plus installation. The videos were very helpful in that they led me to the right connection area. All in all, I have a very good brake controller that I can troubleshoot if anything does go wrong because I installed it by my self. 727260

This product is excellent. The install could not be easier unless you have very tiny hands :-). It was a little hard to reach the factory installed connection but I got it done. The harness comes with plenty of cable for mounting your brake controller wherever you need to in the driver seat area. We mounted ours low, but I can easily see it from my driving position. We are taking our first road trip with our new tow vehicle this weekend and will give it a good workout. About 200 mile round trip over the hills of Tennessee :-). 97150

2017 Chrysler Pacifica

I purchased the Tekonsha P3 electric brake controller to use on our 2017 Pacifica Touring-L Plus with towing package. Our Pacifica was pre-wired for an electric brake controller. So along with P3, I ordered the plug-in wiring adapter 3045-P made for the Pacifica. First I determined where to mount the P3, making sure the wiring adapter would reach the P3. I located the Pacifica's pre-wired harness. I had to remove an empty plug that was installed into the receptacle on the end of the pre-wired harness. I then plugged the the adapter into the now empty pre-wired receptacle and then the other end into the P3 (the P3 lit up immediately). I zip tied the wires of the adapter in a way that it would not interfere with anything under the dash. The install was then completed. I liked how easy it was to install everything. The P3 will be used to control the brakes on our R-Pod travel trailer. Adjusting the P3 was as easy as reading the instructions that came with it. The display, when the controller is not in use, will light up when using the vehicles brakes (trailer not connected). When the vehicle is not in use the display will eventually turn off. See the pictures I supplied. 423825

Comments
The wire harness is working great. We have had no connection problems. Our Tekonha P3 electric brake controller has been working great. With our new larger R-Pod trailer it took me a while to figure out the proper setting for the controller as I had the setting too high. Once I zeroed in on the setting, braking is nice and smooth. It was a good purchase.

2018 Chrysler Pacifica

This cable fit the available plug for a 2018 Chrysler Pacifica with the factory towing package. The factory plug is a bit difficult to access (needed to remove the plastic panel above under the steering column) but the cable fit perfectly and was a good length to mount the brake controller near the right knee on the drivers side. The brake controller started up and works fine. 793696

Easy hook up. I wish that the cable was about 6 inches longer though. 791056

2020 Ford F-150

This part was purchased for our new 2020 Grancherokee limited -X with 5.7 engine. Since I had already purchased the Tekonsha P3 for my F150, and have been so pleased with that unit, I knew I only wanted to transfer it from one vehicle to the next. Oddly enough, the Jeep came with the Towing group consisting of additional oil and engine cooling. Rear leveling suspension but no built-in trailer brake unit. This harness fixed that problem and I am now towing our new All aluminum cargo trailer safely. Also, I have been so busy planning our family trip as travel nurses, me and my wife, to California that I doubled ordered the harness a few days after my initial order by mistake. Carol called me just to make sure that I knew what I had done. She saved me from double purchasing. That kind of customer service reminds me of American business when I was a teenager, back in the 80`s. It's so hard to find that type of service. That is just another reason why I will continue to support E-Trailer over larger box stores. The Davis Family 784135

2018 Chrysler Pacifica

I recently purchased the cable Item # 3045-P for my pacifica. It functions as advertised but 12 to 18 inches longer, for my application is needed. I do not want to splice an extension if I can avoid. I would rather plug an pre-fabbed extension onto the end. Then when not towing, I could unplug the extension (and controller). I could fabricate my own extension if I could find the 4-pin male flat connector that would match the 4-pin flat black female connector on the cable. 713495

  • Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2014 Dodge Durango Limited without 7-Way
If you do not have a factory 7-way at the rear of your 2014 Dodge Durango you would need to go a different route to install a brake controller instead of the # 3045-P. You will need to start with a 4-way (if you do not have one). For that you would want the # 118617. From there you would need to convert the 4-way to a 7-way so that you can install the brake controller. For that you will want the Brake Controller Install Kit and 7-Way Adapter part # ETBC7.
