Today we'll be taking a quick look at the replacement latch for SportRider Explorer Cargo Box. Now, this can also fit a couple different cargo box styles including the Karrite Cargo Carrier #7251, and the Sears X Cargo Box, but we've also had customers tell us that this fits some of the other boxes out there, from either the early aughts or 90's, so it seems to be a pretty universal size. It's just a plastic latch that's going to replace a broken or missing one on your cargo box, help to keep all your items inside, keep the rain and dust out of your box as much as possible. So, I'm going to go over some measurements with you, just so can get an idea of how big this is, to see if it will fit your box, even if it's not one of those other names we have listed here. So, as far as the total length of this portion of the handle, it's about four inches long. We look at just the total length there. The opening on that top hook is.. let me figure out a away that you can actually see this while I measure it.
It's about 3/8 of an inch wide, so just under half an inch of space there. So, as long as the lip that this is attaching on to, is at or less than 3/8 of an inch, should be good there. From this first mounting hole, to the top of that lip, just to give you a reference point, it's about 2 1/4 inches of space there, or really about 2 1/2 inches. Just to let you know where the mounting point would be, and then how much it's going to clamp down. Whenever it's fully opened, it's about 2 1/2 inches wide. So that's the space going out.The little mounting bracket where you'd actually put in your hardware, that measures about 1 3/4 inches long, or just under that, at about 11/16, 1 11/16.
It's about 5/8, excuse me, it's about 3/4 of an inch, or again about 11/16 of an inch wide. The distance between those two mounting holes is about 5/8, and the diameter on those holes is about 3/16.So, just a few measurements to give you an idea of how big this is. The widest point of that latch, at the bottom there, is about an inch and a quarter. If we have it all folded up, it looks like that, and it's going to pivot out and up, like that, so it will just latch down onto your cargo box.so, pretty easy solution to fix that cargo box. It doesn't come with any hardware, so you will have to pick up some screws on your own.
We also have some other replacement parts available here at etrailer.com for that SportRack Explorer Cargo Box, including the spring hinge, which would be that portion that goes on the side that provides the spring for the opening and closing of the box. You can check that out here at etailer.com, using part number SR03810. That's going to do it for our look at the replacement latch for SportRack Explorer Cargo Box.

So glad I found this latch replacement. The latch doesn't hook perfect on the lid but strong enough for a good grip. No big issue for me. I called late, after 20:30, not hoping for much. But Emily was so kind and so composed, it was a real pleasure. When searching the system for answers to my questions, she was singing! Thank you Emily for nor transferring me to a robotic melody! And your follow-ups were so reassuring of the whole process. That's what I call a pleasant customer service. I will post a picture of the old latch and the new one. The new latch comes with the hook bracket that can be attached to the bottom part of the box. I will do that later, in warmer days. Thank you again.
worked just perfect and was identical to original. about a 10 min task to replace both front and rear latches which had broken over time.
First off, etrailer was the only company that gave me any hope of finding a key to fit a Karrite roof box from the early '90s. Thule told me they didn't support the old stuff from a company they acquired, but etrailer responded that there was a good chance the Thule N key of the same number would fit the Karrite lock with a 3 digit code. They were right and I'm back in business. The latches for the explorer box were an exact fit as well. The explorer spring hinges and Adventurer box support plates required some modification to work, but I expected that going in. The only thing that doesn't seem to work is the Thule change key that I added to meet the minimum order for free shipping. The spring hinges are a bit weak for the larger box which likes to distort the lid when it is being opened or closed. They work well at holding the lid open, but I bent one of the arms while closing the lid. At some point I'll reinforce the arms where they are a bit thin near the pivot. Etrailer helped make the old box functional so I didn't have to spend 10x as much for a new one.
I recently was given an older cartopper to use as a cargo hold for a motorcycle pull behind trailer. It was lacking the fore and aft latches which are necessary to keep things dry and the lid intact. etrailer had what I was looking for after a brief search. Not only did I find what brand of cartopper I had, the latches were available immediately. They arrived 3 days earlier than the estimated time of arrival and fit perfectly. My project is complete.
Thank You for solution my problem, I buy the SportRack Cargo Box in December and in the first try I lose boths Latch and I buy from you now, is terrible this can be lose in the speed way when all is good close
I have an older but in great condition Sears X-Cargo. (see pic) These newer style latches will work, but not directly. To get them to work is a simple matter of drilling two new holes for the screws. I found in order to get a better, tighter fit than I did with the original latches, you'll want to close the latch. Center it in the catch groove on top. Make sure the latch hook is seated properly. And with a slight downward pressure on the lid draw a line around the base that attaches to the bottom of the box. Next extend the latch fully. Line it back up with your pencil marks. And mark the screw holes. I marked the bottom first. Drilled it. Put the screw in then marked the second hole once realigned properly. You may find the new holes down and to one side of the original holes slightly. But the latch base covers them once attached. Personally. I replaced the foam seal on the lid prior to installing the new latch. I also replaced the nuts and bolts with marine grade stainless steel. I also used a gasket sealant on all through holes before reassembly to ensure zero leaks in foul weather. It's better than it was new with the improvements overall. My X-CARGO only needed one latch replaced. I bought two. I only replaced one with this newer style. The reason is, the original style has a provision for a small lock. These new style latches do not. I keep the second new style in a small baggy taped to the inside, just incase it's needed. I'm happy overall. My X-CARGO box is better than new, and lacks only the X-Cargo sticker to be completely refurbished. ETrailer was quick to deliver. And very courteous when I called. Ordering was simple.
I've had my Yakima cargo box for years, and the latches finally failed. I was happily surprised that etrailer had the part. The quality of the latch is excellent, ordering was easy, and delivery was on schedule, even during the holiday season.
Very pleased with the replacement latch. We are from Canada and bought the Cargo Box at the local Canadian Tire. They do not carry replacement latches and were not helpful as to where to find one. I checked everywhere I could think of locally. It was easier and cheaper to get it shipped within the USA and drive down to pick up.
This latch worked perfectly for our Explorer by Karrite cargo carrier. It is 10 years old and we just took the old one off (removed two screws) and attached the new one. Screws are not included with this so save your old ones.
This latch made my cargo carrier completely close... even I need to drill another hole but it fits perfect after all... attached pictures even my original latch that is closing the front side.... thanks for your product
This was exactly what I needed to repair my old cargo carrier. The item was exactly as described and was shipped in quick fashion.
The latch was received in perfect condition and works great. Easy to install and super product for our aged Sears X-Cargo car top carrier.
Great customer service! Customer service kept me informed the whole time! Even upgraded my shipping free of charge to make sure the latch arrived in time for me to repair my SportRack for a Christmas trip! Thank you!!
Very nice and easy system to install. In my situation I had to run a tap through the bolt holes on my van due to some rust. Once that was done it went on easy and has been very handy. I really only use it to attach a bike rack to my 09 Honda Odyssey so I can take the family riding. The only issue that I had with it was that some of the paint at the mouth of the receiver was not there. Just like it had been hit or dropped an a little chipped off. Other than that it has been great!
Customer service was extremely helpful and responsive. I would definitely use etrailer.com again.
Worked great took it from nb to Ontario 16 hours of driving and still worked good haven't used it since then it's been sitting in the bushes at my cousins house far as I know they didn't get drunk and burned it yet
I couldn't find a model# for my older xcargo carrier, so after studying I decided to try these latches. They fit perfectly! They were delivered in a timely manner also. Very satisfied with this company.
Perfect replacement for a latch that is no longer available. I used top hole of new latch with factory top hole in box. Had to drill a new hole for bottom because it was off a 1/2 a hole on bottom. Minor clearancing. Took longer to find drill bit and drill than it did to team hole.
Ordered a replacement part for our cartop carrier to Canada and it arrived a lot quicker than expected. Part was a perfect fit and easy to install. Looks OEM and functions perfectly. Thanks!
I have recently ordered 2 different parts from etrailer. What I like most is that they always have what I need, even for things that I didn't think I could find anywhere. Both times the parts were easy to find on the website and exactly what I needed. Thanks for the help!
I think from now on this will be my 1st stop to shop. I usually shop around for items at the best price but you are very competitive and you give good information about your parts. I will refer other people and I will continue to shop here. Thank you for you who you are and all you do!
Exact replacement for Yakima Space Booster latches. Worked great!
I purchased replacement latches for my 23 year old Sears Excargo rooftop carrier, and they appear to be an exact match. The trailer web site was very easy to navigate, and the ordering process could not have been easier. The parts arrived promptly. This could not have been a nicer or easier experience. Thanks trailer!
Excellent. Same as original great fit
I purchased a nice car carrier but noticed that latch was broken, looked on the internet and Etrailer carried it. It was delivered promptly and at a great price. Glad that it was available, because I had a hard time finding it elsewhere. I would highly recommend etrailer.com
