Video Transcript for Saris MTR 2 Bike Platform Rack Review

What's going on everybody Adam here with etrailer today, we're going to be taking a look at the Saris' MTR bike rack. So we've got a two inch hitch and you're looking to hall maybe a little bit heavier bikes, whether it's fat tire bike or an e-bike, this one's going to do it for you. As you see right here, this is the 2-bike version, but we have a 1-bike add on, so you can make it into a 3-bike rack. Or if you've got more friends than that, you're going to grab a 2-bike extension. It's basically exactly this it'll just connect right here on the end there. Depending on how many bikes you plan on carrying, you can go ahead and grab that we are going to have a little bit of limitations when it comes to what bikes we can put on here. One, we want to make sure that we're not going to go over 60 pounds, because we're going to have 60 pounds per bike.

So be sure to weigh your electric bikes without the battery to figure out if it's going to be able to work. Also, we aren't going to be able to get any fat tire bikes that have a width more than five inches on here. Also, we want to measure the diameter of our wheels. We want to be within 20 to 29 inches. Just measure that, make sure it doesn't exceed that or obviously with your kids' bikes, they might not really work that well with this bike rack, but take some measurements and you'll find out.

Now when it comes to wheelbase, what we want to do is measure from where the front tire hits the ground to where the back tire hits the ground. And we don't want to exceed 53 inches. Once we've confirmed that our bikes are going to work on here, one feature I really like in a platform style bike rack is the fact that we don't have to remove our bikes to gain access to the back. We have a little lever down here to lift up a little bit and pull that, tilt it down. And I really liked this just because if you are traveling a far distance, you probably in a town at some point that's not really that familiar. So you don't have to take all your bikes off and hope that they don't run away this way they can stay locked onto the bike rack and you can grab whatever you need. What I'm going to grab is this.

What this is, it's a optional ramp. It does not come with it, but basically what this is going to do, it's going to allow us to completely unload our bikes with the ramps. If you have heavier bikes like I do here, and you really don't feel like picking them up and putting them onto the bike rack, especially after that long ride you just got done doing is definitely going to make it easier on you. But before I take off the bikes, I just want to show you how cool the locking mechanism is.So we're going to have one per each bike. So you're going to pull one side out, pull the other side out in this. We can go ahead and maybe just wrap it around our frame here, click it back into each other.

And we are going to get keys and they will be keyed alike with the lock on our bike rack. I really liked that. I always like buying a product that doesn't require me to buy more products. Yes, I'm going to get the ramp just because it's the smartest thing to do but it's still cool that it even has a ramp. Let's take these bikes off. Shall we What we want to do is this little lever here. You're going to go ahead and clip on that and bring it all the way down. And I'm just going to fold that all the way down and then take this ramp, going to have a little section. The longer section is going to go on the bottom slide her in there and what we can do on the bottom of this ramp here I'll show you, there's two little knobs, just loosen those up and then it's going to be able to expand. A lot of the times there's ramps like the Thule EasyFold XT it has a ramp, but it's a fixed size. So you can buy a longer one. There's an extra long ramp that you can get with that one.But with this it's a lot longer than the Thule one. So it's nice. It's going to be able to fit wherever you're unloading. If you got a taller vehicle or as you can see, the bike starts stacking up as you get farther out. So you're going to be able to adjust and accommodate for that. It's the same exact thing on the back end, but we're just going to have a little hook and loop strap and it isn't connected. So be sure to hang onto that. And then of course, hang on to your bike when we do the last one, and then we can go ahead and we are off.Now let's go over some measurements. I'm going to measure from the center of the hitch pin hole, where our lock is on our anti-rattle bolt. It's going to be universal to whatever car you guys may be putting it on. If you measure from your hitch pin hole and all the way to the outside, it's about 35 and a half inches. So you're going to be adding about 35 and a half inches to the back of your vehicle when you pick the 2-bike version of this. To give you an idea of how big this ramp is at its most expanded point which is right here, it's about 70 inches, but let's see how small it can get by twisting these up.It's going to condense all the way down to about 39 inches. So 70 to 39, it's quite a big ramp. So if you really need that extra, extra help getting your heavy bikes up there, this is the biggest ramp we offer on a bike rack. Time for some more measurements. So what I'm going to do is use the same exact lever I did to tilt the bikes away. But this is going to be the same lever that you used when you put it upright snap into place. So we can have it like this, but it might block our taillight. Let me get you some measurements and I'll show you something to help with that. From the center of the hitch pin hole, it's about 14 inches to here and it really is pretty wide. I have a pretty wide car it's OH one Tahoe. And it's pretty much, it's about 63 inches wide. So it's not doing a whole lot of blockage to my taillights, but it's enough for me to want to fix it. So I'll show you how. What we want to do take this down. And all these arms are going to pivot. It's actually pretty cool how it does it. You just pull this up and then you can rotate these like that. So all of them are going to do that. It's actually really cool. This is a very unique feature for this bike rack only. I haven't really seen anything like it.So go like that, tilt it up taillights. It is going to sit rather high. So from the center of the shank, all the way to the top, it's going to be about 46 inches. Depending on where your backup camera is on your vehicle, it might intrude a little bit, but even in the other orientation, you're going to see it in your backup camera.I just think this is going to block a little bit more if you do have one that is centered on the back of your vehicle. Saris' threw in some goodies. So we have a really cool anti-rattle bolt. This is just basically going to secure the shank to your hitch receiver so it's not a lot of rattling. It's going to be easier on your bikes and easier on your equipment too. But the cool thing about this is we don't really need a tool or anything.A lot of the anti-rattle bolt you need a wrench or socket or something. This is awesome. One, it just makes it just a tool freeway to get your bike nice and locked down. And also this is a bottle opener, so you can open up bottles with it too. On the other end of the anti-rattle bolt is going to be this locking core. And it is going to be keyed alike with the cable locks for your bikes right here. That's really awesome. I like that. You don't have to buy it. It comes with it and that's going to lock the bike rack to your hitch. And then of course the cables are going to lock your bikes to your bike rack. So you don't have to worry about anything running off. And one thing about the anti-rattle bolts is you have to get them perfectly lined up, or it's going to be a pain sometimes you even cross thread them and that's not really something you want because you have to buy replacement parts. To prevent that all you have to do is line up perfectly once and then you should be set because we have another little fun item that they threw in here. This is going to be a hitch alignment tool. So what we do now, now that it's all threaded in all tightened down, we're going to loosen this up, slide it all the way up to where it hits our hitch receiver, lock it down into place. And now every single time we put this in our hitch, it's going to line up perfectly. And then we don't have to really mess with it because this bike rack is rather heavy, it's about 55 pounds. So it's going to make it a lot easier on you. All in all I definitely liked the rack. It looks really cool and it's definitely unique. If you're looking for something to really impress all your friends, and also if you've got a bunch of friends have heavier bikes, it'd be funny to see their faces when you just roll yours up onto your bike rack. I am definitely a fan of this bike rack and especially the ramp. I recommend if you're going to get this bike rack, just get the ramp. It's a nice little thing. You don't have to use it, but definitely makes things a lot easier. But one thing I haven't done yet, which is take it on our test course, we're going to go ahead and put it to the test. Of course we'll start with the slaloms. This is going to show the side to side actions, it's going to mimic the movements that you'll see whenever you're driving down the road normally. And now with the full speed bumps, these are going to be pretty much like the normal speed bumps. You get to see the up and down action of the bike rack and see how it holds up. Now we'll have the alternating speed bumps. This is going to be more so like the uneven roads and some of that uneven terrain you might be traveling on. Well, everyone that just about does it, for our look at the Saris' MTR two platform style bike rack, and I'm Adam with etrailer.

Super easy to add on; the entire Saris rack folds flat against the SUV when not holding bikes, can open back for gear even with the bikes fully loaded. We use it every weekend. I think my car looks pretty good with it on!

Ask the Experts about this Saris Accessories and Parts

  • Best Bike Rack for Carrying E-Bike with Basket and Rear Wheel Rack
Due to how the Saris bike rack part # SA4031 attaches to the rear wheel of the bike it would not be ideal for carrying your bike due to the rear battery/rack setup. Instead a bike rack like the Thule EasyFold XT part # TH903202 would be your best option as it grabs the bike by the frame and wouldn't interfere with the basket or the rear rack at all. This also comes with a ramp to make loading and unloading bikes as easy as possible as well.
