Video Transcript for Rola License Plate Light Kit Installation

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Rola License Plate Light Kit. This is designed to go on your enclosed cargo carriers whether it's a Draw-Tite, a Rola, a Reese, a Hidden Hitch. Whatever the case may be, they design this to fit right onto the rear here. This can also be added to a trailer or to a standard platform style cargo carrier. We have an adapter available for that. The part number is A46PB. Now, the things we're going to need to get our light kit installed, we're going to need a Phillips screw driver, a tape measure, a ruler, a fabric tape, whatever you've got.

We need a firm piece of wire that's still malleable, which means we can flex it and bend it and it will hold its shape as you see there, aka, a coat hanger will work just fine. We're going to need a tool or a plastic screwdriver or some type of lever. If you're going to use a screw driver that's metal, I'd recommend putting a towel around it. We're going to need a one-eighth inch drill bit, and we're going to need a one-inch hole saw. Let's open it up and see what we get in our kit. License plate cover here. Nice strong housing on it.

It's designed to fit here and it faces downward. As you can see, there's a nice rubber gasket that goes around to help protect any of those, that water, dirt and debris, from getting kicked up into our light. We're also going to have four number 10 self-tapping screws. Instructions are also in here. Put the screws in there just to hold them in place. First step we're going to do is here in the rear of our cargo carrier, we've got two small indentations.

Right in the center we want to measure down seven-eighths of an inch between those two marks or indentations, rather, and we'll make a small mark there. Now, I know from the camera that black mark or that blue mark on the black probably really stands out and I apologize, but we've just measured down from here seven-eighths of an inch, and we're going to center our hole right over our center line that runs up here. Take our hole saw, place it right there where we want it. Well go slow at first to let it get started. Then we can add a little more power. Bore a hole out just like that. Now, I just like to clean up the excess.

You just pull it off there. It's plastic. Once we have that cleaned out, we'll trade out our one-inch hole saw, and we're going to bring in our one-eighth inch drill bit. See how that tightens. We need to drill out the two small indented holes that I talked about. One and two, and while we've got the drill in our hand, we're going to drill out our license plate holes too. There's two tabs that stick out here with small indentations in them, and we'll just run our drill bit in those as well. We're going to make four one-eighth inch holes, two for our license plate and two for our light. Next step that we have is to remove the light from the gasket that holds it in place. That's where our small plastic lever is going to come in. We'll place it in behind the light and just kind of aid it and pull out slightly. As you can see, we've got plenty of slack in our line and it's already pre-wired to accept our light. Let's set it up here on the carrier. Keep it off the ground. The next step is going to be to bring our fish wire through. We're going to feed it in the one-inch hole that we just drilled out. As we feed it through, we want to keep it along our top edge here. That's going to allow it to go past this opening. I put a small curve at the end of it. As you can see here, it comes out. I like to make a 90-degree here at the end. That way when I'm fidgeting with it down here, I'm not going to pull it through my hole all the way. So now let's put our gasket back in. It slides in there really easily, and we'll attach our fish wire here to our pre-wire that we're going to send over and hook up to our light. Put that there. Pull on our wire. Help guide our plug in and get it started. Let's just pull this on through, kind of feed the wire with your left hand as you're pulling with your right hand. Grab it over here. We're going to pull it right out. There you go. Its a pretty simple process. It may take you a couple tries, but you'll get it out of there. It's not going to be a big issue. Lets then just place our wires back in there. Stick one side of our light in, and press in firmly here on the other till we feel it's got a really good seat. We've got our plug here. On the rear side of our light there's a small piece of paper. That's protecting our connection points. Once I pull this off, you'll see in there there's two connectors. So we'll place our wire, the pre-wire that we just brought through, down into our connectors. Then we'll clip them together. It's now time to bring our light right up here to the rear of the carrier and also time to get two of our self-tapping screws. Right on the screwdriver, through our bracket. We'll just get this one started just to kind of hold it in place. Then we'll get our second one started. That way we'll know we're going into our pilot hole. Now it's just a matter of tightening these two down. Pull that tight. As you can see, we're nice and secure to the rear of the vehicle. We can now bring our license plate down. Again, just get that screw started and get our other one started. Then we'll tighten these down as well. All right. Now that we've got our plate installed and our light there so that it will illuminate it, let's run it through a couple tests to make sure we've got it connected properly. Now, here, as you can see, once we turn on our running lights it's going to illuminate our license plate for us. You may ask, why is it that we need this light back here. Well, as you can see, this cargo carrier, it's going to block the view of our license plate as we're heading down the road, so we relocate it back here. Of course, most state laws require that it is illuminated, so we're well within compliance. That will keep us from getting a friendly reminder from our local law enforcement officer. That will complete today's look at the Rola License Light Kit for Enclosed Cargo Carriers. Part Number 59117. .

License Plate Light Kit for Enclosed Cargo Carriers - 59117

Average Customer Rating:  4.3 out of 5 stars   (10 Customer Reviews)

Easy to install, light works great. I just wish there was a more robust option for the license plate mount itself. 403461

A very great addition to hauling capability for a Jeep Wrangler JK. Would have given 5 stars except for factory latches. The ones in the front were replaced with more robust latches. Went on 800 mile trip, some in rain, and had no issues. License plate light (59117) works well also. 402602

The license plate light worked as expected. It installed on the unit easily and was plug and play once you routed the wires. It is a little scary pulling the taillights out because you are not sure how they attach to the unit, but they simply snug into the rubber housing. I found it easier to pull the taillights out from the bottom first by rocking them slightly if it helps. They probably mentioned in one of the videos, but I did not have a chance to watch them. An overall great experience with and would not hesitate to buy from them in the future. 635189

sorry for taking so long to reply, but been busy. As you can see from the pictures attached the box is installed and works very good. I have a few comments on it and how it goes together. The main part went together very well and quite quickly, it does take two people for the most part, which is no big issue, my main concern is why the licence plate light is not supplied with the box, already installed, as this is necessary in most states/ provinces and therefore should already be part of the complete box assembly. The other concern is the quality of locks provided on the box and the rack. The ones provided are very inferior to those provided on the Thule box. To date I've not used the box on a trip, but feel it will work very well. 95248

One point to add to my last comment, is that Ive added an extra foam sealer around the lid and today have had no issues of water inside the box. A cheap addition that works. At least so far.

Instructions were clear to install. A little tricky to fish the wire, but definitely a DIY project. 579699

I WOULD HAVE GLADLY RATED THIS CARRIER WITH 5+ STARS; IT IS EXCELLENT IN EVERY WAY, except for the locks. IMO, they are too lightweight for a carrier of this value, not only in terms of securing it’s cargo from theft, but also in ease of use. I find it difficult inserting the keys into the locks to operate them. To alleviate my concern for securing the carrier and cargo from theft, I use a 20’ locking cable system when leaving it overnight. With that said, I would (and have) highly recommend this carrier to others. 442591

The license plate light kit installed easily per instructions and works great! It does require a 1" hole to route the already installed wire harness from the left tail light. I already had a 1" hole saw so no problem for me. 362264
