Video Transcript for RoadMaster 2nd Vehicle Kit with BreakAway Installation - 2018 Ford Edge

So in our 2018 Ford Edge you're gonna be taking a look at, I'm gonna show you how I installed the Roadmaster second vehicle kit with breakaway for Brakemaster assistance. This is what our second vehicle kit's gonna look like when it's installed. This cylinder here is gonna hold air. It's gonna get air from a tube that's running down to an L-bracket and fitting on the front of the vehicle, and that air is coming from the RV itself. Once it is passed through here, it passes through another line that is ran to the inside of the vehicle and ran into another cylinder. That cylinder then presses the brake when the brakes are applied in the RV while the vehicle is being flat-towed.

Now, the braking system's gonna be one of five main components in a flat-tow setup. The other four are gonna be your base plate, your tow bar, your wiring, and your safety cables. Again, this is just a second vehicle side which means it should be understood that your RV side is already set up, and this is not gonna come with all of the components. It's not gonna come with your cylinder that's gonna mount in the floorboard of your vehicle. With our kit, it's also gonna give us a breakaway switch.

What that is gonna do is if our vehicle comes detached from our RV or from our tow bar while it's being flat-towed, it's gonna pull this pin. In turn, it's gonna apply the brakes in the car so it comes to a stop. It doesn't go bouncing down the road and cause an accident. It's also gonna come with your air fitting that needs to be mounted to the front of the vehicle, and this is what connects to the RV to give you the air pressure to apply the brakes in your car while it's being flat-towed. You'll notice a plug here.

This is gonna be a wire in your second vehicle kit. This is gonna allow you to run the cable to your indicator light or remounted in your RV. It's a good idea, before you start your installation of your braking system, to go ahead and remove your fascia if you don't have it off already. We're gonna have some pushpin fasteners on this top cover here we need to remove. You can see a little gap there.

We're just gonna pry up the center, and then we're gonna pull out the center and the base together. We're gonna do that with the remaining ones on top of this cover. And we'll just set this cover aside. Next, we're gonna take a 10-millimeter socket. We're gonna remove the six bolts that run across the top of our grill here. Next, on the inside of each wheel well liner, we're gonna take a 5.5-millimeter socket and we're gonna remove the six bolts. Next, we need to remove this lower panel on the bottom side of our fascia. We're gonna have a couple of different style bolts. We're gonna have 5.5-millimeter bolts, we're gonna have a couple of seven-millimeter bolts, and we're gonna have a couple of pushpin fasteners we need to remove to get this off. And then, we're gonna set this aside. Next on the inside where our fender attaches to our front fascia, we're gonna have three eight-millimeter head bolts. They're gonna run from here up. I'm gonna take some tape. This is just to protect our paint, and I'm gonna go right along this edge so while we're taking our fascia off, if it makes contact, we're not gonna have to worry about scratching it. And once we get it off, we'll throw a piece on the edge also on our fascia. When we start taking off our fascia, we're gonna have some wires that we need to pull off or we need to separate. We're gonna have our running, or I'm sorry, our fog lights, our sensor bar wire, and then, if your vehicle is equipped with the sprayer which is right here, we're gonna have to unhook that hose also. So don't just take your fascia and pull it off. Those are things we're gonna have to disconnect. We'll start on the outside. Just pull down like that. We're gonna go ahead and throw me a couple pieces of tape on here and on that edge. And we'll start pulling our fascia off. I have a plug here, and I have a plug here. I have a couple of plugs right down right here. This is gonna be my sprayer hose. I'm gonna disconnect it from my fascia and just pull the hose off of our little clamps here. You can use a flathead screwdriver, and those'll, should be able to pop those right off or open just like that. As far as this, it's got like a little clamp. You're just gonna pry it open and pull it off like that. First thing we need to do is determine where we're gonna mount our cylinder. We need to make sure that it's not too close to heat and it's away from any moving parts. The only place really that I can find in the engine compartment is underneath this reservoir here. There's a small eight-millimeter head bolt right down here in this corner. You pull that out. You just pop this up and set it aside. And this is gonna be our cylinder here. You can see, I took one of my clamps. I just went and just got a nut and mounted it right on this motor mount bracket, and then my other clamp, I just use a self-tapping screw. Very firm, it's in there nice and tight. You're just wanna make sure you get it to where this valve down here is down or lower than the top side and where you can get a hold of it 'cause if it gets any condensation or water in it, you're gonna be able to empty that out. Now off of that, the top here, you're gonna have two black wires. Doesn't matter which one you use. One of them is gonna be a ground wire which you can see here. I'm gonna ground it right here to this body ground. The other one runs down to your breakaway switch. Breakaway switch comes in the kit with your cylinder. This is where I'm at on my breakaway switch. We have a welded bracket already on our base plate. You're gonna have two black wires coming off of it. One of them, you're gonna extend with some of the wire that comes in your kit, route it up behind your headlight towards your cylinder, and you're gonna connect it to one of the black wires. You're gonna get some butt connectors that come in your kit, just use those. Next, you're gonna mount the male end of your air fitting. You're gonna mount that onto your base plate. Now, there's no way to really mount it here. You don't wanna drill holes into your base plate, so what I did is I used a long bracket. It's a no-drill mounting bracket. You can find them here at etrailer.com. I just drilled two holes in it and mounted the bracket. This comes on the air fitting. Just mounted it directly to that plate with the bolts and nuts that come in the kit. Once you get that mounted, you're gonna run some of the air line from the back of it up behind your headlights over to your cylinder, and you're gonna mount it on this connection here. You can see, we only have two. We have this one and this one. You want it on the shorter one. From our air fitting on the front of the car to the shorter fitting on our cylinder, and you're gonna take the rest of your air line on the longer fitting. You're gonna go from there. I went up. across my firewall over to my driver's side. On the firewall on the driver's side, there's gonna be a rubber grommet. We're gonna need to get a hole in that so we can run our air line tube through it. It's easier to go from the inside and push through it coming out. Have somebody stand outside so whatever you're pushing through there, it makes it a little bit easier with two people. So we have a female fitting we need to mount inside on the firewall somewhere. I like to keep it up out of the way, but you wanna make sure that it's easily accessible to get your air line on and off. It's gonna be connected to your cylinder inside the vehicle. On the back of it, you're gonna have a fitting. You're gonna take that fitting off, and you're gonna have a little piece like this in your kit. I'm gonna take this air line that ran inside. It's gonna be connected right on the back of that. What we're gonna do is we're gonna cut it to size. We're gonna slide on our cap. We're gonna slide on the little ring. Make sure that that's cut flat and at an angle so it seats good. We're gonna take this little guy. We're gonna take that flange end. We're gonna put it in like this, oops. Put it in just like that. Remember that skirt right down on top of this fitting or the back side of our , and make sure it's not kinked or it's not pinched. And then, don't overtighten it. We're just gonna tighten it to where it's snug. For the second wire coming off our breakaway switch, we're gonna extend it with some of the black wire that comes in our kit. We're gonna run it over to the driver's side, behind the headlight. We're gonna come up. We're gonna attach a butt connector, and then our fuse holder. Again, this is gonna go to a positive side of our battery. That'll do it for a look at installation on the Roadmaster second vehicle kit with breakaway for Brakemaster systems on our 2018 Ford Edge..

The RM-98160 second vehicle breakaway kit was fantastic and just what I needed. I did not want to have to purchase a new breakaway system when I already had the basics. It was nice to just install the wiring and seat mounting plate and away I went. Thanks for being able to provide a great product.

Item arrived quickly! Installation on our 1998 Toyota 4 Runner was not easy. Mounting brackets were made to mount the reserve air tank. One wiring item to connect brake activation light from tow vehicle to towed vehicle was missing from our kit. I had to build my own. This is the second system I have installed on our vehicles. The system works great!

We love the Roadmaster 9000 System. Proportional braking with not a lot of electronics to fail. The second vehicle kit was easy to install. Direction were clear along with the install videos provided by e-trailer. Being an elevator constructor does 35 years I found it to be a fairly easy install. Since the components are safety related I suggest if someone is not comfortable with this install I would let a professional do it. Great product. Great quality from Roadmaster.

I added a tow vehicle and needed this kit for the 2nd vehicle. Using the trailer.com instructional videos I was able to install everything myself and save the hassle and expense of getting someone else to do it. Everything went together easily enough. Besides the great website with tons of product reviews and installation videos, the shipping was as fast as using Amazon Prime. I placed my order on Tuesday and received the kit on Thursday. Super fast.

I am sure the product will be great however I found that I really didn't need it since my original brake system had a breakaway system already on it. I didn't know this until the new one was almost all installed. Thanks for your help and concern. Also, the item took 7 days to arrive and I had paid extra for express 3-5 day arrival. Sincerely Gene Bacon
