Video Transcript for Roadmaster Tow Bar Wiring RM-146 Review

Today we're going to be reviewing part number RM-146. This is the RoadMaster's 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Kit. It's going to allow you to easily and effectively connect your motor home to your towed vehicle with the water, oil, and chemical-resistant electrical cord. The flexo-coil technology is going to allow the cord to extend more than 8 feet. Then it's also going to allow it to contract conveniently for storage and to resist dragging and tangling. The 6-Pole extension cord can be used for multiple towing applications. More than likely, it's going to be used for running power from your RV to your towed vehicle. It's going to come with 2 sockets.

One is going to mount to your RV and then one is going to mount to the towed vehicle for quick, easy hookup. The socket mounting brackets are going to be sold separately. You can find those right here at etrailer.com. You can see here how the sockets have the connectors here on the back for the wires to connect to. It runs through the rubber grommet or the rubber sleeve. Then, once it's mounted, all you've got to do is flip up the lid and then you can connect your extension cord directly to the connection points. It's got a nice spring-loaded lid, so it's always going to remain closed when that connected.

That way it's going to prevent any dirt or moisture from affecting the connection points. The flexo-coil cord, again, can expand more than 8 feet in length, yet still contract to prevent dragging and tangling. It's also going to provide convenient storage. We have silicone-injected plugs that are going to prevent corrosion. The electrical cord is resistant to water, oil, and chemicals. The plugs here on the cord have nice finger tabs on them. You can get a nice, secure grip on that. It makes for easy disconnect. The flexo-coil cords are not intended for use with RoadMaster all-terrain tow bars or any other tow bar that includes cable channel guides.

Only straight cords should be used with those models. That's going to do it for our review of part number RM-146. This is the RoadMaster 6-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Kit. .

Works great with the extra length. I have an extended hitch length due to towing a small car and therefore had to add a 4 inch drop which added extra hitch length. My precious umbilical cord got damaged by being to short and pulling out.

It solved my problem

by:

Durable and well constructed, you know when it is connected.

by:

The Flexo-Coil kit arrived sooner than I had expected and was exactly what I needed to complete the towing setup for my car behind the motorhome. It works perfectly and now allows me to charge the car battery while towing.

Customer Service rep Steve was outstanding to work with. Ordered the Flexo-Coil 6 wire kit and it was here within 3 days. Haven't tried it yet but it looks great and i'm sure it will work fine.

by:

Very well made, complete kit with a good quality socket for each end. I found the cable a bit short, although the coiled section allows the wire to stretch, the coiling is very strong and resulted in the plugs being pulled out of the sockets unless I strapped the sprung loaded lid to the plug.

by:

Was surprised to receive the product so quickly--about 4 days. The wire was top quality, but much cheaper than I could buy from any RV dealer which I contacted; shipping was more economical than I had expected. This was my second order from you, and I was pleased with both,

by:

Got just what I ordered no hassles and arrived when I was told it would...thanks great job and will order again when meeded

by:

  • Which Pins of 6-Way are for 12 Volt Power and Ground
I attached a picture that has a diagram of how a 6-way wiring harness is pinned out. The center pin is the 12 volt power circuit and the pin in the 1:00 position on the female socket as you face the open connector is the ground circuit.

  • Easy Way to Convert 4-Way of 2020 Kia Telluride to 7-Way for Just Trailer Lighting
The really easy solution to convert the 4-way of your 2020 Kia Telluride to a 7-way is to use the # 37185. The 4-way of this adapter plugs right into the 4-way of your vehicle and all of the taillight wiring circuits of the 7-way will be active.

  • Durability and Compatibility of Roadmaster 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Kit
Roadmaster over-builds their products and we have not heard of any issues with coiled extension kit # RM-146-7 so I believe that you will like it and that it will last a good long while. The 6-Way connector in the kit will fit Blue Ox base plates. If it is a snug fit or off just a little you can get a deep well socket to gently bend the posts on the base plate.

  • Adding a 4- to 7-Way Adapter with Reverse Circuit for Boat Trailer with Electric Reverse Lockout
Your trailer has an electric reverse lockout solenoid. When energized it will prevent the brake fluid from flowing back to the brakes so that you can back up. All you need is to install a 4- to 7-Way adapter such as # 37185 (if you need to replace the one you have). On the adapter there is a purple wire that you will need to tap into a reverse light circuit on your 2004 Honda Pilot. On the one you have the wire color may be different but as long as it is the one at the center pole then...

  • 4-Pole to 7-Way Adapter for 1998 Nissan Pathfinder
You're exactly correct. If your trailer doesn't have brakes and you don't need the reverse lamp wire or the 12-volt feed you can use an adapter like the # 37185, plug it into your existing 4 pole and ground the white wire. The blue, purple and black wires can just be bundled up and zip tied up out of the way. The ground needs to be attached to the vehicle, to the frame or to a metal component in direct contact with the frame. I've linked to a product video featuring the # 37185 adapter. The...

  • Wiring 4-Way to 7-Way Adapter Help
Since I am not sure exactly what adapter you have the best solution I can provide currently is to have you check out the 7-way diagram I attached and wire up the wires of your 4-way to hopefully the same pin out. Otherwise the easiest to use adapter for your application is the part # 37185 which allows your 4-way to plug into it and converts it to a 7-way.

  • Does Ground Wire of 37185 Need to be Attached to Anything for Adapter to Function
The 7-way adapter # 37185 does require you to attach the ground strap of the 7-way adapter to function properly. Typically people will run it to the frame of the truck near the adapter as that's the easiest location to go with. At the 3:00 mark of the install video I attached you can see our installer attaching it to vehicle frame.

It is likely the RoadMaster 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Kit # RM-146-7 was assembled in the USA with components coming in from elsewhere. This is something that is pretty common to save consumers money; parts are sourced elsewhere but assembled in the U.S.

Yes. Using the # ETBC7 kit to convert your 2018 Jeep Compass's 4-way to a 7-way only needs to be plugged into your existing 4-way and have its ground wire connected to be functional. You won't have trailer brakes, trailer reverse lights, or a 12 volt power circuit until you connect the rest of it but it'd be plenty to get you home.

  • 4-Way to 7-Way Adapter Recommendation for Just Activating 12 Volt Accessory Circuit
We have a similar kit to the # ETBC7 that's more in line with your needs as the part # ETBC7L. This gives you the same 4-way to 7-way adapter but instead only gives you a single wire and breaker to connect just the 12 volt power circuit you are wanting to activate. So this would be the kit you'd want instead. You'd run the wire from the 12 volt pin of the 7-way (black wire) through the breaker to the positive post of the battery.
